Introduction
The Maelstrom Mod introduces four new races to the SoaSE Universe.
It keeps the original races, the TEC, Advent and Vasari who are still to be found building and battling as usual.
All of the new races are independent of the original races and have unique strengths and weaknesses.

Please note that for all mods the 'Installation and Change notes' are included in the download.
Use the recommended 'Graphics Effects Setting' as stated in the Installation notes of the mod.
More info would be helpful. Such as which race you were playing as, what others are in the game, what were you doing at the time, what abilities might have been getting used if you were in the middle of a fight if you were actively using them, what ships were involved, does it happen every time you do what ever it is you're doing or just randomly, maybe even system specs. The more you provide the better the chance of figuring it out.
Hi walkercubed, the most common reason for crashes, whether mini-dump or not, is related to Graphic memory or Graphic cards. If you have followed the "Recommended Game Setup, Effects Settings for all Maelstrom mods" your RAM usage peaks at about 1.7GB (hopefully you have 2GB+). Just remember that this mod almost doubles the RAM requirements for SoaSE.Do you meet the "Recommended Hardware Requirements"?If problems persist lower your Effects settings further. Also follow Stant123 advice.
I was playing alliance, against three AI tec advent and Vasari. On a map created in Galaxy Forge using the planets from the Mod. I clicked on the fleet bar (left side of planet) to capture all of the ships. In order to give them a movement order and it crashed before I could complete.
I followed the recommended settings except that I don't show a box for the cargo ships in the effects tab, can you clarify its location. I do see all the annoying cargo ship icons.
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz, 2668 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s) Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 9.00 GB Total Physical Memory 8.99 GBAdapter Type GeForce GTX 260, NVIDIA compatible Adapter RAM 896.00 MB (939,524,096 bytes)
PS I found the cargo ships and they are now off. On interface tab not effects.
Have a close look at your graphics card ...

Let me know what you think.
Your PC spec's look good.
Do you have similar problems when playing standard maps?
NB: I have updated the Trade & Refinery Ships icon sizes (as per original races icon sizes). For release 2 of the mod though.
Mind if I ask for a quick how-to for your binary planets. Don't have to be to tech, I am fairly versed in all modding and modeling. I love that idea and would love to have it for my mod. I have Sins Plus and Celestial Bodies now with a bunch of new textures coming.
Do you use XSI?
If you do I can send you the XSI files (for all the planets) which you would be welcome to use and as such would also be self-explanatory.
Yes I use XSI and can import . That would be awesome.
For some reason Direct X has a problem with XSI but Scenes (.exp) or OBJs or FBXs works great. When I import a sins model from 3DS to XSI I use both OBJ for the UVs and FBX gives me the Nulls or mesh points.
Yes, I use 3D Object Converter ( http://web.t-online.hu/karpo/ ) to convert [.mesh] to/from [.obj] then import into XSI. I typically hand place the Nulls and follow the "Sins Mod Supplement" tutorial. I'll give you a link when I get home tonight. By the way I've been working on a number of new planets (not quite finished though) which you are welcome to use also.
Ya, I already put the Mod Supplement on my weebly in html. I dont like PDFs. I already am familiar and have 3D Object Converter, nice tool but I used SoaSE Maxtool v1.1.zip and this method for Sins models and wrote a script for XSI that converts to mesh and places in the mod of choice.
My XSI tool bar I created
Since your mod is using 6 races like mine will you might want to try adding this but its a little tricky get in.
I don't get the visual effect they describe in this game, although I did get the stary effect in NWN2. I discovered I am like 2 versions behind in my driver for the gtx 260 and have updated. Trying to play again and saving often, if i should crash I now should have a close save I could send you.
BTW - the big Cap ship (the planet assualt ship) get's little rectangular white box's as it fires it's weapons. The central weapon fires w/o the blank white box.
Mind if I ask, if you have or create a galaxyscenariodef file with all the planets that works for maelstrom, would you be willing to share. Pardon my ignorance as well, what mod are you working on, the portraits look kool.
Everything I make will be free for sharing. Sins of Humanity, coming soon, almost ready for beta testers.
Thanks for the detailed feedback. Correct me if I'm wrong ...
BTW - "the big Cap ship (the planet assualt ship)" Thunderbolt "get's little rectangular white box's as it fires it's weapons" autocannon. "The central weapon" beam "fires w/o the blank white box."
Unless what you are seeing are shield impacts, I still think its your graphics card - I don't get the effect on the Thunderbolt Firing its autocannon's.
My Graphics Card is a "NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS", my OS is XP.
Look forward to playing your mod!
How soon is soon? Valve Time soon? Blizzard soon?
Well, I have a moon orbiting the terran but the damn thing wants to share cloud layers and dust. I combined 2 planet textures on 1 sheet. They were 2048 x 2048, now I have 1 at 2048 x 4096. I think I can also use this sheet to access single planets once I redo the UVs on the mesh file. Needs testing.
The trick is to set the bounding box radius back to the normal planet size to be able to build the structures and set the glow. Also the Nulls (above, center and aura) need to be set the same for the regular planet size.
I will be testing out a few more work arounds and thanks a lot for getting me started in the write direction, saved a lot of time.
EDIT: Oh ya, also need the orbiting planet above or below the structures axis so the moon doesn't crash into the structures.
As of now my 3 new races are just exact copies of the originals. Once all the planets are done I will work on them but I might release as a starting building block for new modders to start with. PM me if you want a pre-release.
Yes, I have noticed the planet glow "problem" I don't mind the effect. I'll look into it too.
The mesh fix is more for the structure building but fixed the glow at the same time. To me the glow is atmosphere.
I wouldn't mind if clouds and such passed between the 2 binary planets, could get a whole shared atmosphere thing goin(the share logistics and such anyway) I love the mod(but my comp cries a little when I use it) mostly for the planets
BadTune~ going BUMP in the night! AH! damnit my toe!!!~
Working on release 2 of the mods ... includes optimization for original races (TSOP) and the new races.
So stay tuned Badtune.
By the way what are your PC specs and OS?
I want to say great mod but im having crashing issues and the mod does not work on LAN!?
To let you know I follow your advice on what to turn off and turn up just to let you know.
PC specs
Hp AMD turion 64 X2 2.3ghz, 4gb ram, nvidia 8400m gs=Crashes about every 45mins to 60mins
Custom AMD Phenium X4 2.3ghz, 4gb ram, nvidia 9800gt super clock ed.= Crashes about 30mins to 40mins
Custom AMD Phenium II X6 Black ed 3.4ghz, 8gb ramm, nvidia 480gtx = Crashes about 10mins to 30mis
My buddy and I tried to do LAN but it keeps saying mesh files are not the same(or something like that)!
Thanks, glad you like the mod ... however, its not so great if it crashes, right! So lets sort this out!!
By the way, thanks for the detailed feedback.
First, as you know there are in fact 4 mods. So which one are you and your friend playing?
And just to confirm, you followed the following
Recommended Game Setup, Effects Settings for all Maelstrom mods
* Planet : Detail - Highest * Ship : Detail - Highest, Extras - High, Bump - Low * Building : Detail - Highest, Extras - High, Bump - Low
Thinks for writing back
The mod is Diplomacy for version 1.011
For your recommended I have it set to that!
Oh I for got to tell you my OS it is Windows 7 ult 64 for all my PCs
To clarify, you gave me feedback on 3 PC's and the crash times (which are all different).
What was the configuration of the games being played when they crashed? Was it LAN?
They are all the same except my two desktops are running 1080p and my laptop is 1280x800 and no we could not start a LAN game at all it said something about mesh files being different.
