Introduction
The Maelstrom Mod introduces four new races to the SoaSE Universe.
It keeps the original races, the TEC, Advent and Vasari who are still to be found building and battling as usual.
All of the new races are independent of the original races and have unique strengths and weaknesses.

Hi RS-fx,
I use XSI and Photoshop. I agree with you that UV mapping is difficult and time consuming. Texturing for me is still problematic and challenging - least time spent.
The TradeAlliance fleet and some assorted models come from a modeller called Coxxon, who has made his model available to the public. I've just re-worked some of his meshes and textures to suit. A lot of the planetary structure are adapted from the original Sins models. I just didn't have time to do them all. The Maelstrom mod has about 120 meshes and associated textures. A lot of work for one person! Hence I had to think creatively. Also, just incorporating the models into the mod takes a lot of time. The Replicator, Norlamin fleet and planets are mostly my work.
Personally, Sins to me is about game play, so making the new races appear and play like complete and unique races (i.e hud icons, voices, sounds, ability mixes, etc) was my first priority ... and still is until I complete the mod for diplomacy.
Thanks for your answer. I was asking because after watching Manshooter video (http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-last-stand/videos/making-of-the-citadel#imagebox) for his mod, i was wondering if there was a way of texturing directly on the model. But i suppose i will have to stick with those depressing UV maps.
I've got an issue here. I download and extract the mod into the proper folder and I start up the mod in-game. I then go start up a game and about 15 minutes in, the whole game crashes. Thoughts?
Is this what you are after -

Had a close look but haven't used it.
Hi Eutro,
The Maelstrom mod for Entrenchment is a beta release. So from feedback so far there is at least one major bug which I'm looking for.
I guess at this stage its luck of the draw ... some people, like my self can play it for hours without a problem.
If you can give me feedback it would help finding it. What race were you playing and when did the crash happen i.e in a battle?
What you may like to do is change the game autosave rate, that is if you have autosave enabled in Sins.
You can change the autosave game time by going to the file "user.setting" and on line 51 you will find a variable AutoSaveTickFrequency. Change it to say 900, to save the game every 5 mins. If the game crashes go back and load the autosaved game to see if it happens again.
You will find the file "user.setting" in a directory (called "Setting") one or two levels higher than where you installed the mod.
Sorry for the frustration, I'm working on it!
I was playing with the normalins and it happened while a fleet of 1 carrier cpital ship and 5 light frigates were jumping to an industrial planet. And the autosave is already at 900. Also, this happened in both the vanilla version, and entrenchment.
Thanks its helpful. By the way what other races were you playing?
I don't think its a problem with the planet. Those blinking Norms! Trouble makers from the start!!
I must admit that I typically play as the Replicators ... maybe give them a try.
If memory serves me correctly autosave is by default every 15 mins. So changing the variable to 300 for 5 min save intervals. I must of reinstalled Sins since changing the autosave setting last.
Well, I changed the autosave rate and played using the Replicators. Same thing happened.
What are your setting in the Effects Menu for Planet Detail, Ship Detail, Buidling Detail?
they are at the highest level
More specifically ...
What levels on Ship Extras, Ship Bump, Building Extras, Building Bump?
Ultimately I am wondering if you are going over the 2GB memory limit of Sins, which can be monitored in your "Windows Task Manager" (Ctrl+Alt+Delete)
all extras, bumps, and detail are at the level "highest"
Well that could be a problem.
Set the levels for Ship Extras, Ship Bump, Building Extras, Building Bump to low or medium. If you still have problems you might like to try reducing the levels for Planet Detail, Ship Detail, Building Detail, from Highest to high.
The Maelstrom Mod has approximately twice the number of mesh/textures as the original game. It is un-optimized, and as such will very quickly hit the 2 GB limit.
Ok, thanks. This mod looked really awesome, so it was frutating to not be able to play it for more that 15 mins at a time.
Don't worry we'll get there eventually!
Alright it works just fine now. Thanks a lot! Keep up the amazing mod work!
Are the new races additional to the original races, or replaces them?
You get to play with six different races. 3 great originals and 3 new ones. Fun, fun, fun!
I'll try Vanilla Sins Maelstrom when I get home tonight. Wish it would rain some weekends. Sad. I. Know.
Hi there Maelstrom. I just found this thread and investigated. Your pictures are mighty fine looking, so I decided to give it a shot. I downloaded your entrenchment version, which I realize is quite beta, having read most of this thread. I tried a game by myself as the Traders. Seconds after the 2nd auto save (which is the default time, every 15 minutes), the game gave me a minidump. I remembered what was said here about turning settings down to achieve the < 2 gig limit and did so, reloading the auto save. The same result. I have yet to try it out with a fresh game with the lowered settings, so it might just be the screwed up save file, and I will try to report back my findings. But I just wanted to say that I also am receiving the 30 minute crash bug that others have mentioned here. But the entrench version is beta, which you make quite clear, so it's all good.Problems aside, the thirty minutes I did get were enjoyable. I love the music (who is it, by the way? Custom/personal or a particular artist?) and the ships for the Traders, at least, are quite schnazzy! The colony cap ship is a bit funny looking with all it's bio-domes, highly vulnerable, I think, but I don't care. It's a neat, well made new ship model. I wish I could have seen another capital before the crash occurred. Anyway, the voices are also well done. The only complaint I have (and I don't know if this is intentional or if maybe I didn't put a file in the right place) is that I started out with no builders, shipyards, or mining facilities. Is this intentional and everyone, including the three vanilla races, are like this? Or does this potentially give any player/computer of the vanilla factions a brief lead right at the game start? Having to wait around a few moments for builders to spawn while your foes are moving is unsettling. If everyone, vanilla included, are like this, then that's fine. But if it's just the Traders or new races (bug or intentional), my opinion (for what it's worth) is that this is not a good idea. All or none, I think. But that's just my two cents.I have one further question, not a complaint or suggestion. The Trader basic combat frigate, Mars something or other I think, only costs 2 population, the same as the scout vessel. I ran across a computer controlled TEC cobalt and compared stats. Indeed, the Cobalt is superior in a one on one matchup. But having around 10 cobalts at the start, plus a capital, before getting fleet increases vs a Trader cap and some 30 or so of their frigates might be unbalanced in favour of the Traders. Having not done this experiment, I do not know the results. I am just going on conjecture. Again, this could also be a simple glitch from the entrenchment beta. Regardless, I just wanted to bring it to your attention, should you have some extra time. Having only done my short-lived Trader game, I know nothing of the other new races and if they are similarly given such a cheap ship or not. It might just be a unique thing for the Traders.Well, my short story now concludes. Hopefully something I have said will be of help to you. I will try the mod again or patiently wait a more proper version. It appears to be a well done mod and I eagerly await my chance to get a complete match finished!Happy modding! Cheers,~Tyndaria
This mod is great but I wish that the Supply Cap and the Capitol ship cap was higher I love immense battles with lots of ships.
Hi Tyndaria,
To answer your questions ...
- Music by Albert Alvarez, Marc Riedinger, Even Rossland (http://www.renderosity.com/index.php)
- Coxxon - BSG fleet (models and textures) reborn as the Trade Alliance
- "The only complaint I have is that I started out with no builders, shipyards, or mining facilities" ... beta version only.
- TradeAlliance have strong smaller frigates, yes somewhat unbalanced. They have strong squadrons. Their cruisers and capitals have different balances too. Research for the TA tends to be slow and laborious. Economics is very good.
- "I will try the mod again or patiently wait a more proper version" ... you could try the mod for original sins.
Thanks for the feedback.
Hi Washuluver87,
The biggest battles I've had is with the mod for original Sins on a Huge Random single.
i love how the mod really doesnt add anything to the vanilla races :] just new factions to have a all out battles and such oh i do have a little request if the shipyards of the Alliance cam be changed to something more humanish cus the shipyard look alot like cator version shipyards
i have a questions also if the BSG like galactica and mercury will be in always or eventully be switched out with something more interesting
but overal it is a great mod can wait to see more :]
Your request has been noted and I agree .. but don't expect to see them changed soon as I am working on the Entrenchment mod and the Diplomacy mod is around the corner.
