The title says it all.
We, here at the Stardock forums, will be playing at least 1 game, of succession Dwarf Fortress.
CURRENT TURN: Iteuniso
This list is currently a meager five people:
Bill_Door
Iteuniso
Myles
Pbhead
Myself/Orvidos
Anyone that has played Dwarf Fortress and would like to join, is absolutely welcome. (I only have 3 forts under my belt anyway, so I doubt we'll be using my saves much.)
We'll be using this seed for our first outing:
Typical succession rules, which are as follows:
Each person plays 1 year, 1 year only. When spring rolls around, they save it, zip it and send it on its way.
No intentional fortress disastering.
If someone utterly murders the fortress, the last playable save will be used.
No time limit on taking your turn, this time around.
Bill will be starting, whenever he damn well pleases (soon, I imagine, if Beta 2 isn't released today). We'll go from there.
Again, if you're interested, say so, we'll add you to the list.
Oh and Bill? I propose Starfisted for our fort name.
Let the fun begin!
Addendum A: People to be Dwarfed On Next Turn
Doopliss
Thiryn
Addendum B: Community Dwarf Status
Addendum C: Available Dwarves
Its certainly tempting, i think i will play it quite a bit, then come back to this. For now dont count me in.
Awesome! I just love these succession stories!
Lads - Sadly I don't have enough time in these days, so I cannot participate in this succession game now. I will have more freetime in ~2 weeks, so if we gonna start a new one later on, I will play as well. Until then I just read this topic. Good luck & Have fun in this game.
Well, I wake up in the morning and still no Beta. Ah, well, it'll gimmie time to finish this up.
Well, it does take quite a while to get good at DF, the video tutorial is 30 videos long, and just covers the basics. If you want to decent, use the wiki (I still do ), and read Bay12's forums, quite a lot of good stuff there.
Too bad no Tormy, I haope whoever gets it after my is mildy competent, Fun is much more fun in a big, mature fort.
Ok, I'm off to finish the year, and then start my writeup.
Edit: Ok, I've finished, will do the writeup now. Got a few interesting things going on.
I'm not an amazing writer, so don't expect much.
WARNING: LOTS OF IMAGES, 20 of them!
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 1:
The queen sent us here on the first expedition to the western sea, in hope of meeting the merpeople, so that we may harvest their bones for profit, or, if that is unsuccessful, to form the first Dwarven settlement on this sea.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 2:
We have arrived. It is rather cold here, and the snows cover everything. We will Strike the Earth! And chop down enough trees to begin making our beds and workshops. Sir Puffypants will see if this ocean yields any fish, and maybe merpeople.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 3:
Buzzards! Buzzards everywhere! We seem to have disturbed a nest of them. The dogs don’t like ‘em, though, so they shouldn’t bug us too much.
Boy, dead buzzards everywhere, the dogs seem to enjoy ripping their wings off!
And jellyfish! Hopefully this means we will have something to eat.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 4:
No more buzzards! We had to build a butchery to deal with all the corpses, and Orvidos took a disturbing pleasure chopping the things up and tanning their hides.
We shall have to make use of the horses we spotted.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 5:
We are starting to get low on food, the jellyfish were not able to be fished, and there are no other fish, so we have built an irrigation system, and it has set off without a hitch.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 6:
Great, some migrants just arrived. All that means to us is more mouths to feed.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 7:
We are lower on food than I thought, we shall have to start gathering plants, hopefully we can survive until the harvest.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 8:
Orvidos is going kinda crazy again, he keeps insisting we let him hunt groundhogs to remedy our food problem, so I set him up with an axe and told him to go for it. I will never forget what the military shorthand reduced his name to: “rvds".
He’s calling himself the Grizzly Boats, he must be off his rocker.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 9:
He’s gone absolutely loony, ignoring the fact that I gave him an axe, and decided to strangle the groundhogs; lukily for him they don’t stand a chance, they can’t even penetrate his clothes!
Part 2 in next post!
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 10:
Well, the harvest is coming in, so it looks like our food problems are over, giving me time to do a few sketches of the fortress.
I’ve also relieved Orvidos of command; he was beginning to worry me.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 11:
Some more useless migrants arrived. Only 3 too.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 12:
Everything has continued according to plan, we are setting up the infrastructure for a metal industry, and have produced a decent amount of stone crafts for the caravan, which has just arrived.
d.
Food before and after:
We have also bought some leather and one steel bar, which we haven’t used yet.
We ordered food, booze and wood from the liaison.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 13:
It has been a bad day.
While digging down, we found that the aquifer extends below the sea in such a way that we will have to pierce it the hard way.
While trying to pierce the aquifer using the ice method, there was a tragic mining accident, and my body . . . died. Fortunately it’s not that easy to kill me, so I took possession of another body, but it seems to have upset some of the dwarves, and we have to train a new miner.
Journal of Bill Door, Grim Reaper, Page 14:
We have finished construction of the dining hall, and revealed two filthy kobold thieves.
I must now step down as leader of this fortress, hopefully whoever takes my place won’t mess things up too badly.
Here is a list of priorities for the next leader:
Pierce the aquifer
Create a water purifier
Start the metal industry, moving to steel once the aquifer is pierced
Create a militia to defend against goblin and kobold raids
I hope I haven’t forgotten anything! I will now step down as Leader.
Edit: I did forget something: wall off a region with only two ways in, a 3 tile wide area protected by a drawbridge that, when drawn, is like a piece of the wall, and a 1 tile wide windy trap-filled passage, ending in a protective bridge like the one protecting the 3 tile wide passage. (I hope that made some sense )
Edit 2: Set up a hospital
Alot happens in a year hey? I still need practice.. back to the training camp
Immigrant Dwarves:
Save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2486.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I also assigned a bookeeper, broker, and manager, and they do have offices.
Edit: Wow, look at all the fixes Toady has in store for .07!
If I still may, I'd like to claim a dwarf. Name 'Gradsh'. Preference:
Sorry, I already claimed him when mine died, I should go edit that post, and I'm done so the next person will have to name you one.
Bill, what is that "Stonesense" thing? If DF would play with graphics like that I think I could get into it.
As we all know graphics aren't important, at least not as important as game-play. I do like the game-play of DF, and the depth of things you can do, it's the ASCII look that kills me. It's not that I don't like looking at it, it's just that it's too hard to figure out what things stand for too me. Even if it had the look of Dom 1 or 2 I could deal with it and most likely get into it. If it played like that Stonesense I could probably like it too. It's reminiscent of my old UO days.
Well, stonesense is a visualiser, it attaches to the Dwarf Fortress process and dispays the 3d isometric view, but you can't play through it. But there are tilesets, which are easier to understand than the ASCII. Someone linked to Mayday's gfx set earlier in the thread, you can check that out. It is pretty hard to figure out what things are with the ASCII when starting out though, I have to agree.
Man... EXACTLY!!! I honestly don't understand how people get into DF. Like you said, the game-play and complexity sounds pretty cool, but the graphics are, quite simply, brutal.
Just use the ASCII long enough and your brain actually starts interpretting the objects as making sense and sometimes even looking like the real objects.
Take the 3x3 grid of characters for the still: once you understand that ~ is some sort of liquid and the division sign is a barrel, it makes perfect sense. It looks like a barrel with a tap coming out from it with liquid flowing from said tap. Obviously a still! It grows on you. When you are just starting out, don't think of it as a game, but rather as a challenge.
Raven, I too can't play with the ASCII without my eyes bleeding, so I play using Mayday's graphics pack and it makes everything into 2d sprites. Or at least almost everything, there's a little ASCII still there, but not much.
Here's a screen shot for comparison.
EDIT: NM, the picture won't show up no matter what I do, so here's a direct link.

Well, I know you get used ot the ASCII eventually, I started with it. But some people just need tilesets. I'd rather have them playing with a tileset than not playing at all.
Oh, and I don't have an ASCII still in any of my screenies, just the stonesense one.
Edit: Red X of doom! You have this as your url:https://forums.elementalgame.com/383779/page/2/%22http://img8.imageshack.us/f/52363393.jpg/
You should have this: http://img8.imageshack.us/f/52363393.jpg/
Can I have the Metal Crafter as Doopliss?
Sure, but someone else (Whoever's next), has to change it ingame.
I propose that if the Beta is not released by 3:41:48 PM (central) today, we sacrifice a Dwarf named Frogboy each year until it is.
That's true, both of them. What you guys should understand though is back in my day ASCII was a programming language, one of the first I ever used back in school. When I see ASCII, I see Code. I can understand using it to represent pictures. We see them done all over the place on the web. Example:
............................................______ __....................................,.-‘"...................``~.,.............................,.-"..................................."-.,.........................,/...............................................":,.....................,?........................... ...........................\,.................../.................................................. .........,}................./.................................................. ....,:`^`..}.............../.................................................. .,:"........./..............?.....__............................ .............:`.........../............./__.(....."~-,_..............................,:`........../.........../(_...."~,_........"~,_....................,:`..... ..._/..........{.._$;_......"=,_......."-,_.......,.-~-,},.~";/....}...........((.....*~_......."=-._......";,,./`..../"............../...,,,___.\`~,......"~.,....................`..... }............../............(....`=-,,.......`........................(......;_,,-"............/.`~,......`-...............................\....../\.............\`~.*-,.....................................|,./.....\,__,,_..........}.>-._\...................................|........... ...`=~-,.....`=~-,_\_......`\,.................................\...................`=~-,,.\,...............................\................................`:,,.............. .............`\..............__.....................................`=-,...................,%`>--==``........................................_\........ ..._,-%.......`\...................................,<`.._|_,-&``................`\ So it's not entirely possible that I can't see a picture when looking at ASCII, but, after all those years of looking at it as a language, I just can't use it for gaming. My eyes and brain get confused and try to kick each other's asses. It's almost like a strange form of insanity.
............................................______ __....................................,.-‘"...................``~.,.............................,.-"..................................."-.,.........................,/...............................................":,.....................,?........................... ...........................\,.................../.................................................. .........,}................./.................................................. ....,:`^`..}.............../.................................................. .,:"........./..............?.....__............................ .............:`.........../............./__.(....."~-,_..............................,:`........../.........../(_...."~,_........"~,_....................,:`..... ..._/..........{.._$;_......"=,_......."-,_.......,.-~-,},.~";/....}...........((.....*~_......."=-._......";,,./`..../"............../...,,,___.\`~,......"~.,....................`..... }............../............(....`=-,,.......`........................(......;_,,-"............/.`~,......`-...............................\....../\.............\`~.*-,.....................................|,./.....\,__,,_..........}.>-._\...................................|........... ...`=~-,.....`=~-,_\_......`\,.................................\...................`=~-,,.\,...............................\................................`:,,.............. .............`\..............__.....................................`=-,...................,%`>--==``........................................_\........ ..._,-%.......`\...................................,<`.._|_,-&``................`\

Now THAT I can live with. Perhaps I'll have to look into this after-all. Good looking out there, Myles.
So where do I go to get a recent copy of DF and this tile-set pack? I need something to occupy my brain until Beta 2 hits so I don't go even farther down the rabbit hole.
You can download the game over here, and the graphics tilesets here.
Whee, this is the first time I've tried one of these.
Right here Raven.
Since you're just starting a new game, all you have to do is move the contents into a new folder and start the .exe, though you're pretty smart and shouldn't have any issues starting the game, just figuring out what to do after that. LOL. I had a hell of a time just figuring out how to dig a tunnel the fist time I played.

Whee, this is the first time I've tried one of these. Many thanks.
EDIT: Whoops...
And as I'd advise to any new player:
Read the Wiki!
Seriously, you'll never get anywhere if you don't.
Seriously folks, when people say Dwarf Fortress has a learning curve like a cliff face, they aren't exagurating. Use the wiki or you will be completely lost.
"It's almost like a strange form of insanity." That is also a pretty good all around description of DF.
