Greetings!
We’re doing some final testing on Beta 2 and expect (but we’re not promising) to release it this week.
This article will walk you through the beta and help you understand what is and isn’t in the game and what kinds of feedback we’re looking for.
If you’re in the beta or joining the beta program, please become very familiar with the reporting guidelines.
General Objectives
Major Features that are NOT in this beta:
Game Elements Disabled for this beta
Game Play Notes:
1. Most of the Magic, Adventure, and Diplomacy techs have not been checked into the public build.
1. The HUD
We plan to have a HUD option where users can play the game with a head’s up display (HUD) that provides additional on screen details. We’d like to have it configurable (more than just HUD enabled or disabled).
2. General Balance
Make sure you play the game a few times first before deciding on what the game “needs”. But we are looking for your feedback on everything from balance to pacing.
3. Multiplayer
The multiplayer part of the game is pretty primitive. Our main interest in this build is to make sure you are able to connect with each other. This was something in Demigod that we felt didn’t get enough attention during the beta that we want to make sure is very solid. Playing against the AI is also a good test in multiplayer because you have to connect to an AI on one of our servers.
So sum up multiplayer: Our interest is whether you can connect. Once you’re in the game, it’ll be pretty crummy for now. Once we are satisfied with connectivity, we’ll enable and clean up the actual in game-multiplayer experience.
4. The Empire & Event Trees
What would make the game easier to play and easier to manage?
5. Performance, Stability, Bugs
‘nuff said except absolutely be specific on your hardware.
As anyone who has ever worked on a large commercial software project can tell you, particularly a game, changing interface and usability (game play, balance) is not the long part.
To use an analogy, it would be like first having to write Adobe Photoshop in order to create a really cool image on it. Most of the effort/expense was put on making the program first. Tweaking and enhancing the image is certainly crucial to determining whether the final image is a good one or not but relatively speaking, it isn’t time consuming compared to making the underlying “engine”.
In the case of Elemental, half the effort is making the engine. Nearly another half is making the assets (graphics, models, etc.). And the tiny piece left are the game specific elements. It’s a huge undertaking and we are so very glad to have you guys as part of it. Hence, when making suggestions and requesting changes, things that require changes to the engine or creation of new assets are much tougher than things that involve changing game play, variables, etc.
Hope that helps.
Dwarfs and Elves go well with bamboo?? =O Waiter I'll take one of each please!
Insofar as I am concerned, people hate elves because they are evil, hateful creatures with few to no redeeming qualities. At least that is how they are on Discworld.
I just realized something! Dwarf Fortress Elves = Discworld Evles!
I will now forever imagine Elves in Dwarf Fortress as Discworld Elves!
Even more reason to commit Elven genocide...
You are all talking about Drow I was starting to get confused for surly you know the noble qualities of the Averil Elves and the neutral nature of the Wood Elves (need a skilled Ranger to get through the enchanted forest anyone?). Elves are not that bad its the extremes of the race that give them a bad rap ( Drow and High Elves)
Just because the wood elves are the hillbilly moonshine swilling (I mean that literally 'moon-shine') cousins of the High Elves, who STILL think they are better than any clumsy human, doesn't make them any better in my book. Stupid tree huggers. If it wasn't for them protecting the forest, I wouldn't need any stupid, archery show-off, nature communing guide. I'd have burned the giant spiders out years ago and there would be a ROAD ... and frequent rest-stops for weary travelers where one could toss back a tankard or two of stout.
And everyone knows that stupid forest they protect is just a flimsy covering over a cess-pool of recently emerged evil darkness that the woodelves are going to be powerless to defeat, and then its going to be all 'Oh please, Empire of Men, help save us from the evil darkness that we could have stomped out when it was still in its infancy if we weren't so busy cavorting in the trees."
Unfortunately for your education, you never seem to have read Discworld. Remedy this right the hell now.
Yes, please do. You've only missed about half of life.
*Points at his name and how it is a discworld reference*
I do not see how exposure to a specific storyline in a fantasy world reflects on education but you are correct I have not read Discworld but now that I have been made aware of such rest assured I will. In the meantime try not to hate the tree hugging folk and focus such hate on the evil loathing folk (Drow) for they seem to welcome it.
But the tree-huggers are always whining about deforestation and selling back wooden things that I bought from them in the forst place, the hypocrits.
They must die by magma.
And once you read discworld, rest assured, you will understand.
Dwarven atom smasher > magma!
I believe the punishment should fit the crime. They should be tied down to a piece of dead wood with vines, their eyelids glued open with tree sap, and they should be condescended to, to DEATH.
The dwarves had it right about the elves. Stolid, hard working folk those dwarves. Could learn a thing or two from them.
Sounds good so far Brad, can't wait to try it out and give some feedback.
And then we shall make +Elf Bone bolts+
Well I will write no more until I read Discworld and also because I think it may be OT and hate to get the forum admin unhappy. But thanks for making me aware of Discworld.
Frogboy, that should serve as a lesson: NEVER again mention elves or dwarves or orcs or whatever similar in one of your journals!
If there was something to test we wouldn't be doing this!
So come on Brad, bring on Beta 2! If I can handle Dwarf Fortress bugs, I can handle any bugs you can dish out!
Oh boy....I'm off to play some DF.
"Engraved on the wall is an exceptionally designed image of an elephant by 'Sankis the Beardless' Gatinbomrek. The elephant is in a fetal position."
Remember, it's not fun if someone isn't melting in magma.
Oh dear lord. We seem to have quite a few DF players. . .dare I suggest a Stardock succession fort?
I'm game. At least it'll give us something to do while we wait for Beta 2.
What time would they normally release a beta or news of it not coming? It's already getting late in the day EST.
Keep in mind I've only just gotten into it, so I'd want to be somewhere low on this list so when/if I screw up, someone can load the prior save.
Well, I only started with 31.03, so I'm no expert.
BTW, we're gonna do this in DF2010, right? Or 40d? I'd prefer 2010, because I find it much more Fun.
