Greetings!
We’re doing some final testing on Beta 2 and expect (but we’re not promising) to release it this week.
This article will walk you through the beta and help you understand what is and isn’t in the game and what kinds of feedback we’re looking for.
If you’re in the beta or joining the beta program, please become very familiar with the reporting guidelines.
General Objectives
Major Features that are NOT in this beta:
Game Elements Disabled for this beta
Game Play Notes:
1. Most of the Magic, Adventure, and Diplomacy techs have not been checked into the public build.
1. The HUD
We plan to have a HUD option where users can play the game with a head’s up display (HUD) that provides additional on screen details. We’d like to have it configurable (more than just HUD enabled or disabled).
2. General Balance
Make sure you play the game a few times first before deciding on what the game “needs”. But we are looking for your feedback on everything from balance to pacing.
3. Multiplayer
The multiplayer part of the game is pretty primitive. Our main interest in this build is to make sure you are able to connect with each other. This was something in Demigod that we felt didn’t get enough attention during the beta that we want to make sure is very solid. Playing against the AI is also a good test in multiplayer because you have to connect to an AI on one of our servers.
So sum up multiplayer: Our interest is whether you can connect. Once you’re in the game, it’ll be pretty crummy for now. Once we are satisfied with connectivity, we’ll enable and clean up the actual in game-multiplayer experience.
4. The Empire & Event Trees
What would make the game easier to play and easier to manage?
5. Performance, Stability, Bugs
‘nuff said except absolutely be specific on your hardware.
As anyone who has ever worked on a large commercial software project can tell you, particularly a game, changing interface and usability (game play, balance) is not the long part.
To use an analogy, it would be like first having to write Adobe Photoshop in order to create a really cool image on it. Most of the effort/expense was put on making the program first. Tweaking and enhancing the image is certainly crucial to determining whether the final image is a good one or not but relatively speaking, it isn’t time consuming compared to making the underlying “engine”.
In the case of Elemental, half the effort is making the engine. Nearly another half is making the assets (graphics, models, etc.). And the tiny piece left are the game specific elements. It’s a huge undertaking and we are so very glad to have you guys as part of it. Hence, when making suggestions and requesting changes, things that require changes to the engine or creation of new assets are much tougher than things that involve changing game play, variables, etc.
Hope that helps.
There shall be Fun, in the Dwarf Fortress sense of the word.
Definatley, they're annoying me too, way too big and flashy, IMO.
another Dwarf Fortress fan out there, they are multiplying like, well Dwarfs who get lonely mining underground.
be patien.... ok me 2
More like cats.
I am also a DF fan, but I am waiting for a decent bugfixed DF version to be honest. Also....Toady is hella slow with the development of the game. I know that he is the only one who works on it, but still...I guess the next major version won't be released for years again. Ah well, DF is his baby [and it's a masterpiece already], so I shut up.
I dunno, things have speeding up since the SDL merge, .06 already, and he's just one man. Could you or I churn out bugfixes as fast as he does? I know I couldn't!
After marksdwarves, training, surgery, dwarves overworking themselves, and unkillable megabeasts are fixed it should be cleansed of the most game-breaking bugs. And sugery's already fixed for .07
BTW, am I the only one who noticed two of the best devs are called Toady One and Frogboy? It's a conspiracy!
Whoa, whoa, whoa.... ELVES are going into Elemental??? When did this happen?????
I distinctly remember seeing in the dev journals that there would be NO elves. In fact, here is what was said for the Elemental: July FAQ on Thursday, July 23, 2009:
"We won’t be putting elves into Elemental for instance. No unicorns. No fairies. No gnomes. No orcs. But if someone else wants to use Maya or 3D Studio and export it into the format we’re using (we’re using a standard 3D model format, forgot which one) you can put it into the game and then share it, within the game, for others to use."
What happened!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
You got duped by a Frog! LOL!
I am away this weekend, so DELAY! DELAY! DELAY! J/K!!!!!
Cuba, here I come.
Nop, you are not the only one.
I don't think that elves are in Elemental, I think he's saying that custom races are disabled for this beta. So I wouldn't worry to much.
I think that is what he means too. As in you CAN choose Elves, Dwarces, Halflings, etc. but not in the Beta. They will be available but they are not the main race I guess you could say...I mean how many fantasy games do we see that do not have elves...at all even the pointy ears or some forest lovingness, I am yet to find one
Huh? We won't have elves/dwarves etc. in the vanilla game. Elemental's world & lore isn't based on the "traditional" fantasy setting.
No elves?! I QUIT!
And people hate elves why exactly?
I think people say they hate elves because of the way they have been portrayed as the Hippies of the fantasy world. Also most of their friends tell them that elves are not cool anymore. I still hate Vampire stories, but it seems to be The Church of What is Happening Now. Herd mentality that's is my answer!!
They are too generic. Like most of LoTR's races they have become standard fair in just about every fantasy game out there. There is only so many stereotypical city-building high elves or treehugging wood elves I can stand...
I don't hate them though, I just prefer diversity over the same ol' again and again.
Because
You ask for help killing a bad guy and they give you a poem or song.
They're arrogant, probably because they are all tall and good looking
They live forever, have powerful magics, and yet they live in huts in the forest and refuse to produce any commodities other than bows.
They are always on about the dark evil coming, which they created, but they run to the undying lands or fade away to leave you to deal with it.
The only time an elf will actually help you, is when its to show you up. You shoot a bow at something? Well, by the time your arrow gets there, the elf already shot it dead three times from 1000x as far away ... and then they'll give you a lecture about how you don't live in harmony with nature.
You pull out a sword of cold iron you forged yourself in the heart of the mountain. A month of sweaty, back breaking labor, to produce a sturdy sword that doesn't break the first time it contacts a shield. The elf then pulls out a glowing blue sword which he magically crafted in less than an hour. Its made of exotic meta materials, that melted down would be worth more than your entire civilization, and oh, it can also slice the barriers between dimensions. And then he gives you a lecture about living in harmony with nature.
In conclusion, elves suck.
Oh, and Deities-forbid you ever shack up with an elven woman. Sure, it will be fun for a while, but then it will be all 'I gave up my immortality for you, and you won't even buy me a pair of mithril shoes so I can look pretty.'
I hate elves, dwarfs are the only good guys ! Stupid trees...
Fair enough that sounds logical
elves raped and killed my family
and its obvious hes talking about custom races, as long as ur not dense...
...
Lol agreed. Traditionally superior to humans but so damn annoying.
i never understood why Humans were always the dominant race with the biggest population while the dwarves and elves were always under populated
figured if a creature lived to be a 1000+ years he will have like 10 kids and they will have a few kids as well. Plus how do you beat a creature who studied or fought 10xs longer than a human can.
huge flaw in that.
Unless you portray humans to absorb everything like a sponge and have some sort of progression complex. But i never saw humans portrayed like that. Also i guess elves should have under developed brains, since their human equal is 1/12 their age. But i never read about mentally challenged elves/
Tolkein made elves too oober. Immortal, cant feel cold, dont sleep, hear everything, see everything, etc but somehow they were pushed back to a small edge of the map dying off. While the orcs who were pushed back to a small city after losing many wars was still coming back stronger than ever. Oh what a cliche
Ya there we go I knew I missed a word, custom.
So in the campeign and such we'd probably have hoomans and all that fun stuff but then you could probably make and elf if you reeeeally wanted to in the custom sandboxyness of fun.
Interesting... it sounds like our own ideas of how elves are shape how we feel about them. Alright, obvious statement is obvious.
I guess my point is, I would hate elves too, if that's how I saw them. But I don't.
I always liked how high elves were portrayed in the warhammer fantasy setting. A really old race with very firm traditions and a determination you can break mountains with. Highly skilled in the arts of war, but never above petty squabbling. A civilization and existence shaped by constantly being under siege by the world outside - not just the last centuries, but the last milennia. Fiercely proud - and fiercely racist.
..because of Dwarf Fortress!
Humans are like rabbits, and dwarfs/elves more like panda.
