I hear talk from frogboy and such about multi platform gaming and they say that they cant put the games they want on a 512 MB console. A completely fair and valid point. But do both consoles only have 512 mbs of ram? The ps3 has games like MAG with 256 players. surely that would require more than 512 MBs of ram. Have any pc devs ever looked at the ps3 instead of the xbox?
What's the difference between a PC with a gaming OS and a console?
Gaming is the primary reason that I use Windows. I have never really looked at any other OS because the only reason I upgrade or build a new machine every couple of years is for gaming. If i didn't game, I am sure any other OS could do email and word proc or whatever just fine. I have never understood why Microsoft leaves gamers high and dry all the time. My gaming habit is the reason I move forward on hardware and software. My writing habit could be supported on any OS and probably many other devices other than a full sized desktop computer.
Power and Flexibility
Doesn't the flexibility of a PC come from the fact it can do more things than a console, and more at once? Wouldn't an OS made for gaming impact some of the other things, like modeling and image editing programs?
And no, MS won't make an OS for gamers since it can't force developers to license development rights from them for games made for it the same way it can for the 360.
I think that if they made a gaming OS, it wouldn't be limited like a console's OS. I'm sure you would be able to do everything a normal computer can do, but it would be optimized for games. I mean, you buy a gaming PC nowadays, and it can still do more than just game.
Yeah, because what games require is in excess of what most programs require in terms of HDD space, RAM, CPU, and GPU.
Exactly! with the way the PC game market is going I am wondering if my current system will be my last windows based PC. I build my PCs for one purpose only and that is to game. If there is no more decent games and all I needed a machine to do office level work or web surfing, etc I would have migrated over to ubuntu or some other form of Linux permanently. I certainly don't need all the hardware bells and whistles to run Linux smoothly.
I'm really surprise the open source community hasn't developed high quality game engine similiar too the unreal engine for linux where small developers can focus on content creation and without having to spend a boatload on licenses fees. This would definately light a fire under Mircosoft to make a more solid commitment to windows based games.
Unless console systems start to intergrate a mouse/keyboard interface I doubt I will ever transition to a console system. I just can't stand console controllers.
