When I read these boards, I see alot of steam hate, with a lot of accusations thrown out. "Requires an internet connection", "resource hog" etc. Now I used to hate steam immensely, Back when those things were true. Many of you haven't used steam in a long time, And Still believe these things to be the case, but several patches have fixed this. Offline mode now actually functions when you turn on steam and you have no internet, you no longer have to connect online, then turn on offline mode, its just lets you go into it. As for resource hog well, I have steam open with my PC and it uses 19 MBs of my 4 gigs. Not too much and I've never noticed a difference when I don't have steam on. Now if you hate steam for other reasons (and please share if you do) that's fine I just grow tired of seeing these accusations that were true a year or two ago but aren't the case anymore. That being I would still rather buy from impulse but it's not the end of the world when a game is steam exclusive.
Hey you might think it's silly now, but there was a time that Apple looked like it was out for the count. Obviously that is not the case now. My point is, Steam is in the lead, that doesn't mean they will stay there. A lot, a lot can change in this kind of industry in just a handful of years.
As far as it goes to being a resource hog, anyone with a decent computer can handle what steam requires. And if you're in the mood to whine about taking up system resources, look at iTunes. That takes up just as much (if not more) memory than steam, with the bonus that whenever you end the process, it's watchdog restarts it.
But I'm not worried about resources, I'm worried about how easily it's "advantages" can be used against you. The Steam VAC system barely ever works, and when it does, it bans the wrong people, without any discretion. And then there is my paranoid side that makes me wonder:
Steam is installed on millions of computers world wide, maintains a continuous internet connection (when connected), and can install updates whenever it needs. Imagine what could happen if someone wanted to use that for other purposes.
Sweet deals and a lot more to choose from for someone like me who is outside North America or Europe. Lack of service from most digital retailers makes me prefer Steam first and foremost.
