So, yep, let's share mods and games we've found that scratch fantasy turn based strategy or 4X itch.
My favourite one recently is a Civ4 Beyond the Sword mod called Rise from Erebus (it's built off another mod which is built off another mod which is built off another mod; it basically goes Fall from Heaven -> Fall from Heaven 2 -> Fall Further -> Rise from Erebus). It's got really diverse gameplay depending on the faction you pick, a pretty decent magic system and some really interesting bonus features. I think it's what we should be expecting off of Elemental in terms of gameplay, especially since certain bonus features are pretty similar. (You can select a setting that makes the world the world start out frozen and slowly thaw out.) I'd really recommend it for all TBS fans (at least those with Civ4 Beyond the Sword), as it's an example of what the genre should be - and it's a free mod!
Now, what are all of your recommend games to help tide us over until Elemental is released?
EDIT: Oh, and I do know that Fall from Heaven / Fall from Heaven 2 were the original games, but they're out of date now compared to Rise from Erebus. Still amazing, though.
Unfortunately, there's just not that much out there in the way of TBS. In fact, there's been a real dearth of Fantasy strategy titles in general over the past few years, and I'm feeling a similar itch to you. I'm currently following Elemental on the TBS side and Dawn of Fantasy on the RTS side of the genre, but of course neither are released yet.
It is really unfortunate, but we can deal with it, I'm sure!
I've never actually played that Warhammer game, Mark of Chaos. Anyone know what it's like?
It's quite good. If you like the fantasy RTS genre, you should buy it.
..on-topic: There are some excellent mods for AoW2 - SM. I am still playing it, and I am using the 3in1 mod package. Basically it combines the 3 best mods, which have been made for the game.
I've recently discovered by random a game called Distant Worlds. It was very recently released and I had heard nothing about it.
I've been blown away by it. It's the most living universe and largest I've seen in a game. The whole thing will play itself or you can control as much as you like apart from shipping goods around that are needed, but who wants to micro that?
Couple that with seriously easy modding options I've started adding races, ships and music from my favourite Sci Fi even though the game comes with stock 20 races.
Kings Bounty Armoured Princess gets my vote. Cant go wrong with that one, although its on the edge of being called an TBS game.
Not really 4x.
But there is a tile Turn Based fantasy game by 1C
Called Fantasy Wars.
Horrible name but it got good scores. Totally recommend people check it out. I played only the demo and i love it. I think the artwork is the same as this game. Well 2d artwork.
Im sure the combat in Elemental will be the same as Fantasy Wars. Like terrain and bonuses and stuff.
Yep, it's like Fantasy General with good gfx.
Like Fantasy General but with bad design choices : every map is more like a puzzle. You don't have several ways to get the gold medals. And I miss the research system of Fantasy General. And the music. Very important the classical music.
Anyway Fantasy Wars and Elven Legacy are good games, with some flaws.
King Arthur the roleplaying wargame is good. Really good. And hard. Don't try it on hard on your first run, you really need to know what are the kind of heroes you can get, and what skills they need to be good commanders.
u mean the king arthur game that is kind of new? and its RTS?Theres alot of King Arthur games
King' Arthur the roleplaying wargame That's the whole title. And yes, that's the new one.

The first expansion is coming for KA in a few weeks, and it will have sandbox mode + diplomacy as well!

That is an excellent news.
