Speaking to Edge this month, Epic president Mike Capps opens up about piracy, and why “the money’s on console”. In a frank and open interview on Unreal 4, Gears of War and Bulletstorm, Capps claims that “piracy’s already had its impact”.
“If you walked into [Epic's Offices] six years ago,” said Capps, “Epic was a PC company. We did one PS2 launch title, and everything else was PC. And now, people are saying ‘Why do you hate the PC? You’re a console-only company.’”
“And guess what?” he says, “It’s because the money’s on console.”
“We still do PC, we still love the PC, but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers and completely changed our business model.” Capps discusses the rise of free-to-play microtransaction based games, like Farmville, the “biggest game of all right now.”
“So, maybe Facebook will save PC gaming,” he concludes, “but it’s not going to look like Gears of War.”

Eh. "“So, maybe Facebook will save PC gaming,” Funny.
Kinda funny how they keep saying that piracy is affecting pc game sales. In the last year consoles grossed 15 billion with the inclusion of sales of the consoles. That's 5 billion per system if divided equally. Pc games grossed 4 billion and that did not include the sales of pc's. This means that there is a possibility that pc games sales are actually higher when the console hardware sales gets excluded from the equation.
They are just flapping their gums to try to influence people to switch to console so that all the mods and such will have to be paid for. Well I'm not buying into the bullshit. PC gaming will live forever!!!!!!
There I was thinking this would be a thread about Obama...
Now seriously: we need a new thread about "PC gaming is dying. (Unless Facebook saves it)".
...
Epic? What games did they make? Unreals? Whatever.
Personally i don't play microtranscation games. I do buy some DLC (on 360) but otherwise i'm not going to pay for small stuff on PC. Mods usually do same as microtransaction DLC and better. I don't see Facebook as the future of PC gaming either... though for some reason, everyone insist on having it (and Twitter) integrated every where. (For example, SC2 will have Facebook integration.. but no chat channels, LAN, and bunch of other stuff. Blizzard's priorities FTL). FB games are just an evolution to flash games, on larger scale, more features, more community stuff. And flash games sure as hell never became THE PC gaming (though aren't they the most played games? By the numbers, easy to find and play, anywhere).
So. Whom indies has piratism killed? It seems that there are a lot of indie games nowadays. And has piratism really changed the business model? DRM's are more invasive nowadays true... but otherwise? Impulse and Steam and other direct download systems are only a natural evolution to selling video games, not a response to piratism. At least that's how i see things. (Not an expert on this stuff of course, i don't think even a layman applies here)
And consoles... Consoles are more popular than PCs as gaming platforms, true? Added togheter that is. Or at least becoming? Wonder why... I wonder also how much does the requirement for constant hardware upgrades affect PC game sales. Can't buy newest games, nor even a year (or two) old games unless i play them on minimun settings and even then they don't work well (exaggeration). Most people are not upgrading their hardware every 6 months, or even every year. Probably even less often. The newest console generation began in 2005 and is probably being replaced around 2015-2016. 10 years on same system. And the games look better and better. Optimization of game engines and such beats hardware upgrades IMO.
And again going on borderline off-topic. What can you do when a thought leads to other? Anyway, money's on console due PC piratism? I doubt that. I think consoles simply offer better accessiblity, better games (generally, at least when i glance on my game racks/shelves) and... uhhm. Biased views here, can't find other reasons
Yeah, yeah, I know, borderline off-topic, probably irrelevant stuff, things that have nothing to do with the thread (which is not that well defined in any case). Blame environment, eduacation and upbringing for not concentrating on the subject. Don't expect me to change though.
PS I have to ask for clarifcation: piratism means copyright infringement and piracy is robbery on sea?
Nothing to see here. Epic's been blaming piracy on their mediocre games since the PC port of Gears of War flopped. It seems they feel the need to keep saying that every 6 months or so in order to feel better about their failures.
Tip: The money is on the consoles because console standard for FPS' are much lower. Gears of War and UT3 failed on the PC because they were subpar by PC standards. Apparently brown and bloom is game of the year material on the 360.
“but it’s not going to look like Gears of War.”
Oh thank god, I think our PCs can do much better than that wanna be hit game.
And sorry Epic, I think it is fairly clear that PC gamers have the same feelings toward you.
Mike Capps is like Bobby Kotick (Activision CEO), the reason why gaming industry sucks.
I actually like Epic. I was a fan of their games since their "Potomac Computer Systems" days and ZZT, heh. Haven't played one of their games since the 1990s though. I don't think there were many games more moddable ever in the history of PC gaming than ZZT.
Yeah, yeah, I'm a dinosaur.
Lol...funny...this is what I was thinking about as well.

Either way, I don't want to make a new topic for the following article, so I post about this here. [Sorta on-topic]
How to fix what's wrong with PC gaming
The platform is powerful but flawed - here are 12 things that require a reboot
I believe he got a point.
And no wonder the money is on consoles. There are more dumb people in the world then techsavvy ones.
I like where things are going. The PC is about gameplay and story > all. Consoles are about eye candy. If you have an idea and want to make a game, you go to PC, ignore piracy and distribute online - way more suited to indie devs. If you're a corporate behemoth afraid of piracy you go to the console and churn out a shit game.
I'll never go to consoles for a few reasons:
- I'm a try before you buy type. I'll pirate something first and iff I like it I'll buy it if it's reasonably priced. If it's badly priced I'll still buy it when it eventually drops. I do this for quite a few games. Since the days of Black and White 2 and similar over-hyped games I luckily held off buying, I barely ever preorder. Only Elemental and Starcraft 2 I have enough faith in that I've already paid. - Strategies > all. Mouse + keyboard > all for strategy.- I like my FPS with a mouse + keyboard too.- It's cheaper. Games are cheaper, there's loads of old and free games.- Mods- Desk + comfy chair > sofa- Higher resolutions - Am a bit of a hobbyist with PC hardware
There is a very promising Rockstar game which I would like to play: Red Dead Redemption...but it won't be released for PC.
I don't really understand why...I thought that GTA4 for the PC was very successful for example.

Money is on consoles. There's no question about it.
And nothing of value was lost.
Yeah I know about this, but it's not official.
After watching the Free Roam trailer a couple hours ago, I'd be thrilled if this were to happen. However, it wouldn't be a gaming magazine if they didn't foul up somewhere important each issue. So this could be misinformed stuff going to print, which happens a frightening amount.
This is very true. While I like Gears of War - it was only as a pew pew action fun game. Not a real game for me. UT3? AMAGADLMAO! what a piece of trash "hey guys we brought you UT2... 4 years after the first time. Why u no buy it?"
UT3 on PC DID bring extensive modding options that has brought out a ton of awesome mods. And a number of those mods are now able to go indie with Epic's release of the UDK.
So UT3 was good for SOMETHING at least.
Forgot to talk about Facebook and their "games"....Farmville....Mafia Wars....OMG!! Zynga (who makes that crap) almost beat out Bioware in The Escapists March Madness (vote for your gamecompany.)
After Zynga beat out some mediocre companies, people started to ask what great games Zynga has made. Bet some thought that they had made some under-the-radar super games but when people found out that they made "Facebook games the shit hit the fan! When it was going toe-to-toe with Bioware (or Blizzard or was it Valve..?) people realized that it was serious. Everybody rallied against Zynga since they HAD to be stopped!
There was WAY too many Facebook ****tards that joined that site just to vote for their vile "game"company.
Too true. Zynga doesn't make games, they make simple interactive mathematical functions that they then add some shiney bits to and market as a game.
Based on the amount of horrible, watered-down multi-platform games these days released on PC, piracy has already killed PC gaming. Now we have console gaming, just you play on your PC. Sure, certain genres remain alive and well, but on the whole we’re stuck with what can be done on those glorified DVD players.
As long as people have powerful home PC's, people will play games on them. Even if they have to start making them them-selves. PC gaming will go on forever, it's that simple. Also something everyone forgets, even console games, ALL console games, are Made With a PC. Companies and Developers don't sit down in front of a X-Box and make a X-Box game. They use a PC and programs on that PC to make the X-Box game. In theory, every game that's ever been made for a console has ran on a computer other then the platform it was designed for at one point or another in it's creation. From a cost factor, why do all the extra work to make that game into something that no longer runs on a PC but works on a console? Why not release it on the PC and THEN make a console version if it sells well? Well...a good gaming PC can cost as much as 1 or 2 thousand dollars. A good gaming console? 3 or 4 hundred dollars.
I started gaming when I was 8 years old on the original Nintendo. I couldn't afford a PC of my own until I was 18 years old. The day I bought my PC I went from being a primary console gamer to being a primary PC gamer, with console gaming being something I only do for specific titles (Metroid/Zelda/God of War/Halo/Mario). For me, there is a distinct quality level between console and PC gaming. Some console gamers will never understand the difference because they may never be able to afford the hardware to play the quality games. I think WoW has changed that because tons of kids that would normally be playing Nintendo or Playstation now wanted a PC so they could play with their friends On-line. Now more then ever, both kids and adults game on PC and consoles. In the end though the money is in the adults hands, but often the kids decide what it gets spent on. Most kids these days don't ask for a $1500 computer. They ask for a $400 PS3, or a $300 X-Box360, or a $200 Wii. Kids, not adults, despite the ever growing Adult Gaming Population, control the "purchasing power" in many families the world over. Parents make the money, and the kids spend it by saying "Mommy, I want that!! Daddy, I want that!!". Games are made to target kids for the most part. Go to any video game store and count up the games with cartoons and comic book characters and children's fantasy characters that you see. Then count the number of "Mature" titles like God of War 3, Grand Theft Auto, etc etc. Sure there are plenty of mature games...now. But for the most part there are way more Kid games and more Kid games are made then mature games. Consoles are aimed at kids too. PC's don't advertise during the Saturday Morning Cartoons. Wii, Playstation, X-Box, they all have adds for various games that are on every time, day or night, that they play kids programming.
LoL...Me too.
No....No we don't. Ever!!!
Bad news. Some facts from the Podcast with Rockstar: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=21242630&postcount=671
pc release?no plans currently
You are too defensive. There are still CIV V and Elemental on the horizon. Try those on a console
And there are games like Kings Bounty, King Arthur, Distant Worlds, Majesty 2. Quality may vary a bit here, but these games are not within the reach of a console methinks
