Just wondering if any Elemental/Stardock fans happen to also be King's Quest fans? I'm really looking forward to Elemental, and one of the first games that introduced me to both PC Gaming and the fantasy genre was King's Quest (King's Quest IV, to be exact). Anyone else out here with an appreciation for Sierra's classic series?
I'm a Kings Quest fan.
My favorite was V.
Hi Xan, KQV is great! I think KQV and VI are the best.
Absolutely!
I'm pretty much an "Anything-Quest" lover. Kings Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest etc. they were all kick-ass games. Sigh......we need games like that again.
Oh yeah those were great games. I particularly liked King's Quest VI. Ah yes the skeletons dancing to the bones song. Classic.
My favorite was playing KQ III on a Tandy 1000. Oh yeah baby!
I'm glad to see some fellow KQ fans here!
I too loved all of Sierra's adventure games, particularly Quest for Glory and Gabriel Knight, with King's Quest being my overall favorite.
I played many of them as a kid (and badly since there was no Gamefaqs to get unstuck!) . Also LucasArts games before they changed into All Star Wars All the Time. Good times. The modern adventure games (the new Sam and Max and Monkey Island games) have been watered down (though still funny at times) too much, it's just not the same. You don't really have to think to get through them anymore, and it's impossible to lose.
I think this is one of those genres that just doesn't translate into the modern era. They're only good for one playthrough, and they're too easily spoiled by the Internet. Kids these days would simply NOT bother to try and figure it out themselves just play the game from a walkthrough start to finish.
Loved how the old games would mock the player for dying. More modern games need to do this. Instead of 'You are Dead', have 'Did you know there's a evade button in the game? You should try it out sometime.'
I grew up on KQ and QFG. I wasn't able to read or write at the time, but my parents wrote me a "cheat sheet" with all the words mapped to pictures, allowing me to type them out. I learned to read and write from those games.
Ken and Roberta Williams need to start up Sierra again. Whatever happened to Sierra? I thought Activision sold the brand about a couple of years ago?
Loved King's Quest up until that last one I think. Kyrandia, Space Quest, King's Quest, Quest for Glory (Serf city but a different genre there)... pretty much got me hooked into PC gaming, gateways to "western" style RPGs too.
Activision-Blizzard currently owns the Sierra brand. Sierra (as well as Blizzard) was fully owned by Vivendi, who recently merged with Activision to form Activision-Blizzard. Besides uploading some of the back-catalog on Good Old Games (www.gog.com), Activision-Blizzard hasn't shown any interest in reviving any of its classic Sierra IP. But with LucasArts recently finding success with Monkey Island (Tales of Monkey Island, Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition), I like to think that anything is possible.
Although it's technically not "Sierra", many fans (including myself) are really looking forward to Gray Matter, a brand-new adventure from Jane Jensen (http://www.graymatter-game.com/). Jane is primarily recognized for creating the Gabriel Knight games, but she also co-wrote King's Quest VI and mentored under Roberta Williams. As far as I know, she's the only remaining designer from old-school Sierra still making games (Ken and Roberta are busy enjoying their retirement sailing around the world).
For those of you who aren't aware, I would also like to mention AGDI (http://www.agdinteractive.com/) and Infamous Adventures (http://www.infamous-adventures.com/home/). AGDI has produced terrific remakes of King's Quest I and II as well as Quest for Glory II, and Infamous Adventures has skillfully re-worked King's Quest III. Best of all, these remakes are available to download for free and run flawlessly on XP/Vista/Windows7, so definitely check them out if you haven't already.
