Dawn of Victory is a modification currently in development for the RTS/4X game; Sins of a Solar Empire. It is a “total conversion” replacing the games original models, textures, UI elements, and gameplay to create an entirely new and original experience.
It is our goal with Dawn of Victory to “maintain depth, but shift focus”, taking the things that made Sins of a Solar Empire a truly enjoyable game, and apply them to a different set of rules.
Above all, the team behind Dawn of Victory is committed to only releasing a product we can be proud of. While we pride ourselves on the quality of our art assets and aesthetics changes, we hope the true value of our mod is the unique and engaging gameplay.
The storyline behind Dawn of Victory was originally little more than an excuse to create what we thought would be a unique and fantastic backdrop for the game. Loosely based on the “WorldWar” series of books by Harry Turtledove, we wanted to take the atmosphere that made World War II games so compelling, and transport it into a space opera setting.
Over time however, our backstory has grown into an expansive universe, spanning over 300 years of alternate history. Our community driven wiki, dedicated to the story behind the mod has grown to over 500 pages, with hundreds of individual contributors.
The Democratic Federation combines the best elements of the American, Andrean, British and French fleets. Large numbers of specialized ships are available, and when properly coordinated, become effective against nearly every threat.
Applicants should be familiar with normal and specular maps and have a commitment to detail. The art direction of the mod calls for mostly realistic texturing with some room for stylistic exaggerations; experience with generating "greeble" and weathering are a must. Texture resolutions range from 1024 square to 4096 square.

Haha, very funneh.
Operating more spacecraft then the 6 largest American, French, and British airlines combined, Aeroflot is synonymous with Soviet civil aviation. While officially a commercial enterprise, Aeroflot is part of the Soviet Air Force’s strategic air reserve. During wartime 70% of Aeroflot aircraft are capable of being absorbed directly into the armed forces, ready to provide immediate airlift support.
In Soviet Russia... nah screw that joke it got old when Yakov Smirnoff stopped telling it.
More nice lore, good stuff.
Awesome image, love the logo! Background planet done inhouse?
Background planet was an image mapped onto a sphere or somesuch for the specific purpose of the render.
Looks a bit more complicated to me than that. In fact I'd bet it was more like three spheres, two images and a at least one gradient based shader. Or maybe not the last one, on a closer look there's no atmospheric opacity distance faloff. I just wanted to comment because its a pretty good piece of work as far as CGI planets go.
Explain this one Mr. SmartGuy!
Looks like a composite of rendered models (turret shadows are a giveaway), some lens flares + bloom, a background image and what looks like a flat overlay for atmospherics + maybe some photoshoping for the light rays. Personally I would use volumetric lights for a similar but much more 3D effect.
A very nice image though. And am I right?
looks great guys keep it up!!
very nice image indeed
How does one make those lens flares, anyways?
Depends. Usually with rendered images you use some sort of compositing software, like Nuke or After Effects, or in case of XSI you can even use its built-in compositor. Of course, for single images Photoshop is also an option.
Specifically, its done by applying a lens flare effect (usually there are plugins for that) on a separate composition layer, then setting the blending mode to Screen or similar and adjusting the effect so it looks how you want.
Would definitely like to see this mod playable before SoSE is outdated. This looks like a very cool concept.
The fighters and bombers should be named "Hammer" (Serp) and "Sickle"(Molot).
Just a thought.
You know its a real shame that the game doesn't let gun turrets rotate because everything else you have done to this point is just stunning. Actually changing stuff is soooo true with the mod, amazing. also unlike most mods your not copying some one else's universe like star wars or star trek, you have created your own universe that, lets face it, is so much cooler than the sins universe.
It's time for an Enemy at the Gates quote: "Well, there wasn't a sickle, but there was definitely a hammer."
Then it's hammer time.
I can hardly wait for the official release. We'll have an awesome mod then to go along with fusion power and our flying cars. The future is so cool.
You can have rotating turrets if you make abilities and all your mounts are called as particle effects.
Oh, thats cool, sorry that awsome!
I love the design of what I presume is the colony frigate-analogue unit.
It actually deploys from our colony ship type thing, there's also a Aeroflot civilian variant used as a supply ship.
Ah. Very cool.
Did I mention you're my favorite modder?
all credit needs to go to our 3d guy Silver Mobius, I just post these pictures.
