Gamestop and EBGames are now giving away SC2 beta keys with SC2 pre-orders. If you've been trying to get one without luck so far, and are planning on getting the game anyway, this looks to be your best bet.
Wish they had done this to begin with. At this point, I've watched so many commented replays. I don't really want a beta key anymore. Yeah, I'm an old SC player but I think I might let this game be out for six months or longer for them to get the balance right. Balance still looks iffy to me.
Doesn't anyone who wants in the Beta have a key already? There have been so many ways to get one:
Opting in from the beta site. (Chance based, requires owning a blizzard game)
Various contests. (Chance based)
Getting an invite from a friend through the invite a friend key some people got. (Requires someone to give you an invite)
Sending a PM asking for beta access to a certain Starcraft 2 designer on a certain forum. (Requires you to be a member of said forum)
Having visited Blizzcon and gotten a key there. (Requires having visited Blizzcon)
With there having been so many opportunities to get a key, surely you would already have one if you wanted?
1. I've opted in on my two Blizzard accounts (I own two copies of Diablo 2 for item transfer purposes)
2. I've opted in to a PC Gamer contest for a key, but that has been the only one I've seen.
3. None of my friends have beta keys.
4. I do not know of said forum or said designer.
5. Blizzcon is on the West Coast, in here in Atlanta.
The opt in and contests have been pretty selective, so far as I can tell. Its nice that they have a solid way to get in.
True, I suppose that if you are somewhat unlucky, it is quite possible to not have gotten into the beta, even though you wanted to.
But this way is no more solid than the other methods that have been there. Their key supply is, according to the website, limited, and those shops are not available in all countries. But still, more potential ways to get into the beta can only be a good thing.
This is still a bit of a crap shoot, although I suspect less so than other means. In particular, the in-store method has them print the key on the receipt, and if you call ahead you can find out if they still have keys to give out.
We will have to see if my bad luck holds out.
I've been following a lot of casted game replays on youtube, but what does the beta include? Is it just multiplay and skirmish vs AI? I was assuming that it doesn't include the campaign, and that being the case I'd probably just wait until it came out, or wait until the price drops a little.
However it is tempting. Giving beta access to those who preorder is a very good incentive for me. (And no I haven't gotten any beta access keys though I have tried.)

How long did it take you to get your code after you purchased? I'm looking for signs that say I won't be getting one.
I ordered mine at about 2PM today EST and haven't received a key yet. They indicated it could take up to 24 hours, so I expect the game by this time tomorrow to be sure.
If they don't, you can cancel the pre-order and order it locally, assuming your local shop has codes (some have run out, some are fine).

I was in the same boat as FutileEmotion.
So I preordered this morning and received a key this evening. I've played 3 matches so far in the noob area and have been completely destroyed in 2 of those. In the third my opponent timed out, but when I checked out his base after, it looks like he was going to thrash me anyway!
Well what's required to run it? Would a decent, single-core laptop with 2 gigs memory, and "regular" (nothing fancy) graphics card run it?
Probably, on the lowest settings. It would be pretty close though.
Still no code. Going to go to class, try and focus on statistics instead of siege tanks, and maybe if I'm a good boy Santa will bring me a present.

They may have ran out. I did decide to go ahead and pre-order about an hour after I posted in this thread yesterday (around 9 PM EST) and now it's nearly the same time the following day and still nothing.
That will teach me to hesitate!
I got one through my battle.net account. So did a friend of mine... And I invited another friend with an invite your friend beta key. So maybe my group of friends is just lucky! I do have like 8 other friends who want one though...
