Poll. In Your Opinion: Did "Smurfing" Help or Hurt the SINS Community?
Vote; Help, because...
Hurt, because...
I'm going to abstain because arguments can be made both ways. Hurt--can result in stacked teams. Help--allows people to experiment with new strategies and races, to play games they might not otherwise play (FFAs, etc.), and to keep from being harassed by other players. ("Dude, you totally lost that game for us last week, uninstall now you noob.")
WoW, and my poll was biased? How about re phrasing the question too,
Was smurfing A major factor in the demise of ICO? - That question would have been more suited.
Come on dirty there are 3 races and we all played them.Only vets can smurf.
Hurt because smurfs was like a hand that reached up thru the opened wound and pulled out ico s heart while it was still beating then took a bite out of it and laughed.
Hurts, which I have griped ad nauseum about for months in great detail.

i was forced to smurf when people started stacking teams against me because they thought i was too good
and lately i cant even play any 1v1s without smurfing becasue of this
i still think smurfing hurt the community but some people smurfed to get out of 'stacking' rather than the other way round
Why keep repeating the same BS argument? Among the people who were good enough to stack teams, little to none of them were doing it so they could try something new out. Unless the majority of DT was trying new things almost every single game for months at a time...
Hurt, obviously.. The thing that got me (other then stacked games) is when I got beat by a smurf I'd occasionally get whispers from them about it. OTOH when I beat smurfs they would disappear never to be seen again.
NW, this game changes and evolves a little bit with every patch and there are endless strategies to try. Also, it's possible to be much less comfortable with one race that you'd like to try to play than another even though you've played that race before. I'm not saying that people aren't smurfing for malicious team-stacking reasons, just that there are some legitimate reasons why people might want to smurf.
I am far more likely to play with someone who has some losses rather than a ridiculous win/loss ratio. The first thing I want to do is find people with my general skill level and play for fun. Once you learn every trick in the game and win all the time, what is the point.
There is much bad behaviour in multi-player games but most developers took action in different ways to not eliminate but to curb it. I am a regular Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2 player on Moongamers. They will ban people for bad behaviour on a ladder. Warning, Kick, 1 day ban, 5-30 day ban, Permanently Banned. Swearing twice into chat is an auto-kick. With Steam games I could find and ban a person using the SteamID, no matter what they changed there name to. I want the option of not having to play with that player ever again. Once other hosts do the same you will find the punks behaviour changing for the better or not being able to play at all.
As to the point of multiple people using the same account, your number = your reputation. Don't let asses play on your number. The same could be said for loaning out your car.
As to the point that a couple bad apples can not ruin a community is hogwash. Look what happened to the reputation of the LAPD or catholic priests or any other large organization with some bad eggs.
Yes it Hurt the community.
Smurfing doesnt hurt any game. If that were true then no game would have a multiplayer following after the first 6 months because every game has smurfs even the one's with ranking systems because players find ways around them...
It seems to me the smurfing threads are made by poor losers or people trying to undermine the community. These threads just discourage new players from joing the community which then makes it so the only people to play will be smurfs which is counter intuitive. Either way it's a load of crap. I wonder if these posters work for steam.
