Well it looks like that 2K Games version of X-Com I was talking about a few weeks ago has been announced. It's a first person shooter reboot which looks like it will have next to nothing in common with the original. Check it out on Gamespot Here . Something tells me this may ruin X-Com forever...
Lets hope the proper reboot Firaxis is supposed to be working on will fix the damage to the X-Com name this P.O.S. is going to bring.
Oddly enough stranger things have happened. Back in the day we totally reworked the way housing was accessed in UO because the players complained about the way it was set up. Meh, I'm just geting my hopes up they will somehow see the light and not kill what's left of X-Com's name with this shitty remake.
This beggars belief. I had to check this wasn't an April Fool's joke I missed.
What's the point of using the X-Com label on a shooter about an FBI agent Vs Aliens?
That's like using the 'I am Legend' label on a film about a guy on his own against zombies, not vampires, and he's not the only guy alive and the meaning of the title of the film doesn't fit like the books title does.....ahh...
X-Com isn't a relevant name, it means one thing in the heart of gamers, great tactical, turn based, squad combat. A reboot might see it become a tactical squad based RTS, or some over slight warping. But taking a Half Life clone and slapping the X-Com name on it is simply some game studio who wants to develop an FPS off the back of someone else's name and managed to get the X-Com name cheap. Whoever sold out the X-Com name for them to do this should be as ashamed as this developer.
I have one hope, that we see something like a tactical shooter like the Swat games or old school Rainbow 6. That's not going to happen in this 'for console' dumbed down FPS world.
FBI agent, like Fox Moulder? I think they were shooting for X-Files.
This isn't exactly new news because it was leaked when a member of the bioshock team left. History is repeating itself, the only difference is before they got the forums to buzz about System Shock 2 to justify the investment to make Bioshock.
2K: "We've come to chew bubble gum and take a crap on X-Com. And we're all out of bubblegum."
whats with all the classical games turning into shooters. I HATE SHOOTERS
but this cannot be stopped. Too many people love shooters. I bet this X-com is going to be successful.
Like those people who played fallout3 and going "YEAAH!! BEST GAME EVER!!!. Whats fallout 1 and 2?"

Your giving us, those of us who like some FPS titles, a bad name for no good reason. I like some FPS titles but that doesn't mean i want any company to take X-com, a strategy title, and turn it into an FPS. Hell I've purchased X-Com almost a dozen times to get it to work on various OS changes. The worst part about the news is that the company that "has" X-Com is going to destroy it to make a quick buck and pretty much guarantee we never get a quality title from the franchise again.
Sadly, I have to say I agree. The only hope we'll have to save the name is if Firaxis follows through with what it was supposed to have going. I also found a quote on Gamespot that talks about Firaxis and their reboot but they can't confirm it either. I think whether or not Firaxis does a X-Com game may depend on how well this one does. If this is a disaster (which I'm almost willing to bet it will be) they'll be afraid to put out another X-Com game even if the game mechanics are totally different between the games. People who don't know or appreciate the original X-Com will see another X-Com game and think it's like the sucky shooter they just played and they won't but it.
It's times like this I really wish I was a millionaire. See, I don't always just wish for millions like I suppose a lot of people would. The only time I wish for more money is when I see a chance that if I had a lot of money I could fix something or change something that really mattered to me. I'd spend what-ever it took to get the License back and I'd put real X-Com fans in charge of making the new game.
The problem isn't that they're turning X-Com into a FPS - hell, I'm sure it'll be a great FPS as I doubt 2k are going to make a complete piece of trash. There is nothing wrong with FPSs, the problem is they've taken a strategy game and are trying to turn it into something it's not; they won't be making an 'X-Com' game, which begs the question why even bother with the name 'X-Com' when they could make a brand new IP. Look at Resident Evil 5; if they had of called it something else entirely, like 'Gears of Evil', I wouldn't bash that game so damn hard, but they called it Resident Evil and then failed to deliver a Resident Evil game. If you're going to make an X-Com game, you make a god-damn X-Com game, not 'Call of Cuty: Modern Warfare 2: X-Com'.As for why, it's all about money and brand recognition - its easier to get a new entry in a pre-established series greenlighted than a brand new idea, especially if your pitch begins with 'Ok, its like Modern Warfare 2 but...'. After Modern Warfare 2's success, everyone wants a piece of the action-heavy FPS pie, and I wouldn't be surprised if see more of these kinds of reboots. They want that Frat-boy market, that market that made GTA and Modern Warfare the biggest names in the industry.
You and me did not play the same game.
When I first saw that on the GWJ thread I immediately thought "Japanese fetish game".
Awesome another one of 2k generic fps!!!
So what that will be what £40 for 8 hours of playtime, with absolutly no challenge from start to finish?
Well except getting the bugger to work!
Bioshock was an awful fps, the only thing redeming about it was the story which although good didn't warrant anothere playthrough. I remember being promised a "spirital successor" to System shock .
But how can they do this to X-com, the game is a tactical squad, come mangement game. I suppose at a pinch you could get the first but not the latter, which was the bit I had most fun with. I loved catching and researching "alien do-dats".
Though being British, the word X-com (it was called UFO:enemy unkown) had no place in my childhood, so I can always close my eyes and pretend their two seperate franchises.
On a more depressing note if this do well any dreams of a "true to form" X-com/UFO are well and truely dead.
I think I'll give it a miss.
So how long before we Civilization 6:
"Guide your nation from the Stone age to the Space age, as Fred in this exciting First Person Shooter. Learn to conduct shotgun diplomacy with Ghandi, Wage war against the German army with an atonsihing arsnal of 5 weapons, develop new technology as you rescue Newton from Alexander or loot the wonders of the world for their wealth.
