So, another renovation, and I'm running out of ideas on desk space. I've switched to a flat desk for more monitor space, but I need some ideas on how to get more desk space...
I've even turned my touchscreen to portrait mode...
As you can see from the pics, I haven't plugged the two new monitors in yet...
The 2 suggestions I saw that said build your own were right, even if you have to buy cheap( 3 or 4 units) Walmart or Ikea and re-inforce them with scrap wood and a cordless screwdriver. Minimal fuss & Minimal $.
OR
If you know anybody doing kitchen Reno's - Take the cubboards \ counter.
... Sigh. It's an abomination in the eyes of people who are minimalist and tell people to only use one monitor? It's an abomination because I work better with multiple monitors and apparantly you guys dont?
Or I'm showing off? No. I'm not showing off.
Showing off would be also showing my tv:
Which btw is to the left of this 'abomination'.
How about my kitchen pc? That's right. Kitchen pc.
Now I'm sure you minimalist types would say it's unnessecary. You'd say you can do without. But I say IT'S HELPFUL, YOU CAN STORE THOUSANDS OF RECIPES FOR COOKING AND DON'T NEED TONS OF COOKBOOKS LAYING AROUND, AND SO IT MAKES THINGS EASIER.
Now, how about my banking pc?
Now I KNOW you minimalist types will crucify me over this! How DARE I use another pc for banking?! How dare I have keyboards with lights on them for nearly every pc?!
Well you guys talk to me when you visit the wrong site and your identity gets stolen, um k? No sites accept cookies except for bank sites. Flash and javascript are both turned off. All of my pcs use standard user, but this one is protected out the ass an automatically deleted all internet use at the end. Pics and video is also disabled online.
Now you guys may talk to me like I'm stupid, but I know that at any given point sites can be hacked. Even the bank ones yes, but at the LEAST I can protect myself the best way I can.
Oh and the lit up keyboards? It's HELPFUL. You don't need lgihts and you can easily find keys. You also can see what is going on with your pc diagnostics easily.
Now what about a fully automated kitchen?
Unnecessary? Yes, but so is most of today's stuff, so go live in a cave. I don't have to mop, and I feed and give water to my cats one a month.
I also have a triple monitor eyefinity setup in my room, powered by 3 samsung 204bs (Not to mention an alienware gaming laptop):
A ps3:
Hell, I can even show off with various consoles I have:
This doesn't even BEGIN to show a game collection that has everything from an atari jaguar to a sega saturn, famicom, etc.
I may as well show off my collection of robots too:
Call it unnessecary, I call it helpful to have so much free maid service.
While I'm at it, I may as well throw in my touchscreen steam shower. Now THAT is worth bragging over:
Now see, THIS is bragging about technology (And I'm not even counting the guest pc, another desktop, another laptop, a netbook, and some other stuff). I wasn't doing this until you guys kept giving your opinions about the situation and not listening.
All that I wanted from this topic is ideas on how to store my CURRENT STUFF in a more efficient manner. Some ideas were good (As I said before Twilight, your ideas were very good). Moving the desk to the left is out of the question, but some ideas were very good, only the topic has turned into a POV war with people telling me I don't need what in my POV I need, or people saying I'm bragging.
If someone honestly starts a topic BY SAYING THEY GOT ANOTHER DESK JUST TO HAVE MONITOR SPACE (And by monitor space, I mean space for MORE MONITORS), what the hell do you guys think you will accomplish by telling that person to get rid of monitors?
You think I did this just to not do it? Seriously?
Obsessed with tech? With how much you can 'multi-task'?
I see pictures of two lovely people, amidst the junk. Where do they fit in?
dude, throw those segas in the bin or sell them on ebay.....no one plays sega anymore...... the last time i played sega was late 80's with my little brother.
Well I give up. Call it junk, but I don't have to vacuum, I have an amazing steam shower, I can do more with a computer then you guys with one monitor (No matter what the hell you think), so you can kiss my ass.
I'm done with this topic.
I just went and gave everyone who tried to help (even if the suggestions were undoable or bad), actually read the topic, and didn't call my stuff junk karma.

Thank you for actually reading a topic, understanding that I wanted a better area without removing things, and trying to help. And not trying to start flame wars.
As for the rest of you... A man's home is his castle. Even if I lived in some dingy shack, it would be my home. Calling somebodies stuff junk is a very quick way to make enemies.
Gonna wait till I've painted it all first...
Seems there's an attitude here that has gone to 'junk'.
If you ask for help you have to expect it.
If you don't appreciate the responses then don't ask for them.
I'm personally sorry I wasted my time.
Did you win the lottery?? You're livin' like James Bond with all that techy stuff. That's just awesome, and I'm honestly jealous. My desk consists of my laptop and........ a Galileo thermometer. If I had half of those things, I'd be showing off too haha. As for the issue of how to get more desk space, I would suggest building a shelf along the entire wall and getting a chair that rolls really well.
Or, you could move it all into the starship, Captain.
all of that worthless junk owned by the guy who said the ipad is useless. pretty ironic.
i know, dark, you hate me.
Actually everyone let's just leave him alone. I believe after seeing the last batch of photos that the man has a condition called "Hoarding", which is a serious condition only recently identified by the medical community. So let us wish him the best and hope he gets medical attention soon.
Might be double post, sorry if so:
I appologize if you took my showing off your stuff comment seriously, it was meant to be a joke. I'm actually impressed with all the tech you've got, DK.
LightStar: This is not Hoarding, Hoarders keep GARBAGE!!! This stuff all works, and he uses it. Compartmentalization. Everything has a purpose. I'ma take a wild guess and say you aren't a psychologist?(No, I'm not either) so you really should not be accusing anyone of being a Hoarder to begin with.
One note, DK, I think some people, like Jafo's last comment, were noticing you dismantling ideas you didn't like, but not commenting on any you did(Except the printer idea). There were a couple other good ones, like part of the Monk's first post, but you didn't seem to really care about that, which explains a couple of the responses. Then again, some of these people are just out to .
All in all, I saw nothing wrong with all this stuff. It actually seems very useful, particularly the seperate banking computer, very good Idea.
To be quite honest, a second desk may not be something to overlook too quickly, even if you just put them side by side to extend the space, and get the computer towers off the carpet. Even if you just set them on some 2x12's cut under them. Static is not your friend.
-Twilight Storm
DK...dude come on....you don't realize it but you're proving my point....sigh
Looking at this latest batch of photos you certainly aren't the type to ever be concerned with "desk space" except maybe from the perspective of where you can plop down another electric gizmo. Seriously, look at these latest pictures yourself objectively (if you can) and you'll see what I'm talking about. Any available SURFACE in your home seems to have some kind of gizmo squatting on it.
"Deskspace" as I know it doesn't even exist in your home. I think you should re-title your thread "I need more SPACE"
DK I really hope you're not taking offence to my remarks, I'm just pointing out what I see as inconsistencies and my god man......you have a lot of stuff!!
Anyway, I think I've said my piece......you just need to make a choice.......that being what to get rid of to make more SPACE or build/buy a bigger home. There may not really be another option if you in fact "use" all of that stuff.
the Monk
Me too, now I'm kinda glad the damn post I wasted 20 mins on last night never really got posted (forums were being a cu.....well you get the idea).
+1 That or he is overcompensating for something abysmal. I'm done with this one, just not worth it in the end.
Are you sure? Because I live in a 3 story house and only showed you a few pics of a few rooms. Keep up the judgement calls though.
And when that medical condition is worth about $20,000, then maybe you are the crazy one.
Everything is a medical condition now-a-days. It's normal to be weird, and impossible to be normal. In your case, you have a pretty nice medical condition that I hope I'm diagnosed with someday
No, Tom. I disagree.
THIS is hoarding (apply Crocodile Dundee voice/accent):
I would suggest going to a space planning expert. You showed a number of photos, but what would help would be a blueprint of the living space, and how your things are organized in it.
Space planners are extremely ingenious at what they do, and frequently come up with fantastic solutions. To help you just an idea (please feel free to ignore it if you think it poor) I would suggest prioritizing which games/books, etc. you use on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. The more frequent the use I would make available. The less used, and unused I would store in an unused part of the living space or dispose of. Just my approach...I'm sure there are others just as valid.
Your stuff is sh%t and my sh%t is stuff. "Move your sh%t so I can put my stuff down".
George Carlin
I would look into ergonomics and make sure your chair is properly placed at the right hight and distance from keyboard. You should not have to look up at any monitors. The shelving idea is good to clear some floor space.
Dark Knight, what I'm seeing is not so much that you've got a lot of stuff, but rather that you have insufficient furniture and less than adequate storage. What I see in those photos is clutter... all over the place... in every room Frankly, I couldn't stand that and would constantly be rearranging it all to achieve order, rather than enjoying the equipment.
So yeah, if you don't want to follow Doc's suggestion to employ the services of a space planner/interior designer, perhaps you could invest in some design specific furniture that better accommodates your equipment. You've got electronics on the floor, and that is a definite no-no... a cardinal sin to most technophiles and geeks.
Good luck with that, but previous suggestions relating to ergonomics and anthropomorphics have been classified as 'unhelpful'.
As DrJBHL commented, workspace design is a science whose rules are quite defined and inviolable.....which leads to the adage....
"How many Greenies does it take to change a lightglobe?"
"One, but the lightglobe has to WANT to change."...
So then...
'How's that hopey, changey stuff working out?'
Well, maybe you should adjust where your desk is. If you aren't willing to get rid of anything because you are convinced you absolutely need it all then you should thing about a total space re-arrangement. If you could get a wall behind your desk, you could wall mount almost all of those monitors except the touch screen. Then you'd have more space on your desk for more stuff.
Seriously, you have a lot of "crap". What you need to do is look at what you have and if you havn't used it in the last 6 months to a year, get rid of it. Some of that stuff has quite a layer of dust on it proving that it hasn't been used in awhile. Sell it on eBay and make some money off of it. Someone will buy it. Then you'd have more money for newer stuff. Like a bigger desk. And wall mounts.
After a bit of convo with jafo, here is my modifications:
Monitors are all in the line of sight. Top monitor reaches to the center of my LOS.
I was able to get a leg area for the pc on the right. Printer was moved. Speaker and phone were also moved.
I may do something else with the speaker later, but for now it'll sit right there.
This is the new home for the printer And it's honestly a ton better this way).
Thanks jafo for the help!
