The old chatter on the web is that Stardock is considering a sequel to Master of Orion 2, but most of this is pretty old. Does anyone know what the current word on this is? Stardock seems like it would produce an actual sequel, rather than the travesty that was Master of Orion 3.
They'd have to get the naming rights first. You'd be surprised how much companies cling to those old licenses (even if they don't want to do anything with them), practically holding the damn things ransom for exorbitant sums of money.
No sign that stardock are making MO4 other than wishful thinking. I hope Stardock do make a GCIV3 though, 2 was excellent especially with the expansions.
Actually it was my one source of comfort when the long awaited MO3 turned out to be one of the worst games in history, (and I was one of those who really tried hard to learn to love it) GCIV2 was there to pick up the the pieces.
with the player written patches I found MOO3 to be pretty tolerable in the end. Had it not been called MOO3 it would have stood on its own merits (with the player patches - the original game was terrible beyond belief).
Personally, I would like a full quality polished version of something similar to space empires V. With proper AI, nice graphics, working multiplayer and properly customisable games. Turn based too. I do like SINS and as a real time space game it does a very nice job, but i also want a proper huge scale detailed space empire game, with the detail while being high still being voluntarily automatable enough to not become a spreadhseet nightmare once you have a large empire. Customisable enough to play whatever scenrio you want easily (tiny republic with fast tech advance trying to reist the slow and ponderous but static evil empire etc). and with a huge and detailed tech tree.
GC2 was fun as well, but the ship design system wasnt as fun as space empires v. i missed the huge detail from SE5 with drones, missiles, mines, fighter carriers and generally more sophisticated ship and tech design options. I also felt the wormholes added more strategic depths to the game. sadly SE5 has one of the worst AI's ever made and sadly graphics also matter to me and id prefer it to look better and be easier to read.
*off*
Master of Orion 1+2 just released on GOG for $5.99

They are probably going to make their own spiritual-successor to Master of Orion and will most definitely carry a new name, but looking forward to it whenever they do get around to it.
Sword of the Stars is an OK successor to Moo. It is turn based and has a decent AI (not great). Have not tried it multiplayer.
I would really like to see a true Moo sequel with the same races, lots of the familiar tech names, etc that is not Moo3.
MOO I is freeware. MOO 2 used to be freeware also but is now sold by Atari, heres the deal its a one install limit. Seeing that I bought the game like 5 times in my life from age 16-21 and then finding out its a one install limit drove me up a wall. Do a little Internet research and you will find MOO 2 is still for free. Honestly though... That is one game I never stopped loving. When I heard the rave about Galactic Civ. I went ahead and bought it. I was sadly disappointed because it did not have turn based combat and I simply could not get into it because I was used to specializing my population on planets and tactical turn based combat along with transports and ground combat. Also the Planet building was a bit thrown together IMO. Would of liked to see more graphics/icons representing numbers where I could adjust and not plain just numbers everywhere. When I found SINS I was pleasantly surprised. I could rotate the map to look like MOO2 and I could control the combat. But again its was the lack of ship customization/planet building/pop transporting/ground combat were I lost interest. I think the most disappointing thing was that there were stars with 20 planets and only 5 stars in the galaxy. I am just being picky because I love MOO2 so much and nothing has come close to its simplicity, combat, and random fun. Well at least if your a MOM lover Stardock is making Elemental. Which I am looking forward to! I guess I should go to bed now
I never really liked GC1 I have to say, because I couldn't design ships. But GC2 particularly with both expansions is great, though I agree I miss turn based combat and thin both space combat and planetary invasion need work in GC3.
I think it would be a mistake to try and make a 'sequel'. And they already have a Sci-Fi 4X franchise of their own in Gal Civ, although admittedly I never cared for that as much as the old MOO2 because the weapons in Gal Civ were all very generic and bland (Rock Mk II, Scissors Mk III Paper Mk. IV, etc.).
I do hope they make a Gal Civ 3 with the love and respect they seem to be applying to the old MOM formula in Elemental. Hopefully with less emphasis on influence and star base management, and more on weapon research and ship design.

Hum..
Why the hell should stardock throw an insane amout of money in a battered franchise like MOO when they have a perfectly healthy and respected one on the same theme ?
Wouldn't make sense.
It wouldnt need to be called MOO4. They could make a game like MOO2 and call it Master of the Stars or something, the way they made a spiritual successor to Master of Magic with the name of Elemental
I think that if Stardock decided to make Master of Orion 4 it will be a great hit, there are TONS of people on the market who are waiting for this game, the only thing is that they will have to make it a little more like MOO2 and not MOO3...
I fear no news here?
WE NEED MOO4^^ NOW!
I'd rather have Gal Civ 3 or Gal Civ 2 with multiplayer option and that would be far better than MOO4.
I found that GALCIV 2 with all it's updates a fine spiritual successor to MOO 1 and 2. The only thing it needed was tactical combat. Loved the Spaceship designer, I would spend most of my game designing ships
Was not impressed with Sword of the Stars at all. Not an engaging game
