Many people are saying the world is going to end in 2012 due to the lack of further information on the mayan calendar. Your thoughts?

Stay on topic, this thread's predecessor was locked due straying into a bad place. Particularly avoid the topic of religion. It may seem like this thread is open to that due to the many appocolypse theories out there, but I am specifically refering to the mayan calandar.
Please be conciderate to the thoughts and beliefs of others. If you disagree, say so, and SAY WHY! don't just take the "Because I said so" approach.
This is meant to be an open-minded debate style. Both opinion and facts are welcome. I'll let someone else start.

All nice and good, but we all know that the only things that rules us is the All Mighty Dollar, or more, whoever controls the cash.
Unity won't be profitable for the corps or gouv. (but very profitable for Man as a whole) But as long as there's money to be made, they'll be diffrences and such...but who knows, Man is a creature who knows how to surprise itself
In my honest opinion, we need to either unite as a people(Or at the very least, form a number of factions that are less that ten so it's a bit easier to find some common ground and eventually unite)
Or, we need to be wiped out. We've become stagnant as a race. Everything we do now is simply a different variation of what we have already done. We need to move forward, or just stop existing. As we are, humanity is going to be the end of the world.

Wake up people! The world will not end in 2 years. You cant possible believe that, can you? If the gravitational Equator theory is correct, and we are indeed closing in to the Equator, then we would already be feeling the effects of it. If we are gonna be destroyed by it, at the year 2012, then there would have been heavy catastrophies by now. Scientists would be aware of it. 2 earthly years is nothing compared to how big the galaxy is.
The world leaders, and big companies of the world would NEVER allow that. Like I said, its all about the money, and like LEADER Mk said, as long as there is money to be made, they'll be differences and such. Wars will occur, people will kill other people, steal, rape, burn, lie, decieve, invent new weapons of mass destruction, lust for power, lust for fame (fame = money), and almost every wrong that is happening in the world is because of our GREED for money.

.. and if scientist know about it they wont tell us to prevent mass panic... there is evidence to support that they will do that. there have been numerous asteroids that have been near misses lately and they don't release the information on it until a couple days after. One actually went by on monday but wasnt reported until wednesday.
Plus they have already taken all the money out of the stock market.. Thats how it crashed. Its also why GW wanted to put the social security money in there before it happened because they know there is nothing to save for and wanted the money for themselves to build shelters in case it there is a catastrophe.
This proves nothing, these earthquakes have been happening for decades at these parts of the world. Noticed how they are at the yellow lines on the map? I am not a geologist but it doesnt seem very concerning to me.
About the mass panic thing...you are correct, scientists wouldnt tell us the world is gonna end, if it did.
I for one do believe in the accuracy of the Myan Callendar. I put a lot of stake in the supernatural as a major part of my beliefs. I just don't believe lack of further dates means there is nothing. However, let's assume it does for a second. I can think of one, and only one, way for this to happen. An all out nuclear war where ever missile gets launched. That isn't technically a natural disaster, but it would get the job done, no?
Yes, humanity is perfectly capable of destroying itself, we dont need any help from Mother Nature to do that.
That said, if world leaders decide that since the Mayan calendar ends at 2012, that they should start out an all nuclear war and end all life. Ok, I'm being sarcastic, but thats the only possible scenario that can cause the end of the world in 2012.
And to be serious now, that scenario can happen any time in the future, not just in 2012, so the only thing we can do, is hope that no lunatecs with power in their hands go crazy, and start nuking the world.

A war like that can start and end in a day over something as trivial as one leader insulting another. Some people(Even those in power) can overreact to the most ridiculous things.
Yes, it could happen at any time in the future, but unless that is 2012, then it wasn't on the calandar. We're debating the world ending in 2012 here, not nuclear war, I'm just listing possibilities.

Agreed. Personally, I'm against having government at all. People should not be ruled by other people, and every form of government does that. But that's an entirely different thread.

actually decades would still fit in since that would be less than 1% of the years between the 26000 year cycle.
not quite the only possibility.....the gravity could yank us out of orbit or pull an asteroid toward us or the maganetic field could go down to zero exposing us to radiation...I'm not saying they will happen but there are more possibilities than nuclear war.
Good point, and since we can be sure about what exacly happened to earth thousands of years before, then we cant know if these earthquakes are normal or not.
That is based on the theory that we ARE indeed heading to the Equator, which I dont believe we are.

Present day physicists have proven that we are moving into it. So it isnt just a mayan thing anymore for that anyway.
At least the nuclear countries just adopted a policy to not fire any nukes toward any country without them unless they are violating the international nuclear treaty (N korea and Iran) or use biological warfare. Also each country just agreed to drop their nuclear arsenal by 33%. Still got way more than enough to blow up the whole world though.

Let me be more clear: This thread is about 2012, and I dont believe in 2 years we will be into the Equator.
So we're to believe they won't do it because they say so? I have no faith in that treaty. Any country that fires a nuclear weapon anywhere, whether the country can return fire or not, knows that that act will cause world war III anyway and will likely not care about the repurcussions because they have a "plan". if they have a reason to use the nukes, they will use them. And to be quite honest, the next time a nuclear weapon is used, whoever fired it will be killed, and their country taken over. I guarantee that 100%. Too many people would be pissed off about it, and the firing country would either be nuked back, or invaded.

And let me remind you about Pearl Harbor: USA was in a peace treaty with Japan, and the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor with their full forces, breaking the treaty, and in a few hours killing more people than in such sort time than any other invasion in modern war combat.
Later the USA ended the war with nukes, and you can be sure that if the Japanese had nukes, they would have used it on the USA a lot earlier than Pearl Harbor.
World War III is the most possible scenario, and if it doesnt completely destroy the earth, it WILL annihilate most of humanity, you can be sure of that.

They may just be seeing what they want to see. They believe the calandar predicts the end, and they found a way to explain it scientifically, the same way they do with everything else. Ridiculous if you ask me. You don't need to know why something is happening to know that it is happening....I just completely lost track of where I was going with this...Dangit.
They didnt say it meant the doomsday scenario would play out... just that the astronomical event would occur. Most physicists play it down since they are mostly non religious types.

The Mayans may possibly had found out that the earth is circling in and out of the Equator every few thousand years (IF this is happening indeed), but I dont think that if they had discovered this, they would use it as a joke to future generations of humans Thats kinda funny you said that, though
Well first of all i hope you mean above volcanoes!!!.
Secondly many of us Caribbean people have no choice. Most of the islands fall along a fault line or and were formed volcanically, and still have active or dormant volcanoes near by
