I'm a bit concerned about the automatic system where female children are automatically married off and cant be proper heroes.
This is just like the system in the paradox entertainment games where all heirs and generals are male. This is so unshakable that even in in mods such as the middle earth mods of total war kingdoms you cant have heroes like Eowyn or galadriel because only males can be heroes.
As a woman i find this arrangement less than satisfactory to say the least. Cant we please have a system where when a child is born, male or female, you can choose whether they are married off or become a full hero? After all MY sovereign will be female and I sure as hell wont have a law that says males will inherit thrones over women, maybe id ban male rulers entirely.
Either way I should have the option. I dont see why all heroes should be men especially in a world where magick is the source of power, not physical strength. Cant hurt me with a sword if I've just turned you into a slug or my mind controlled thrall after all. This may sound trivial to you, but it isnt to me. In a strategy game like this one I can live with it if I really have to, but in RPG's, i have never bought any of the 'male character' only RPG's like the Gothic line ones and never will.
Aurore
* male/female, human/non-human, pretty/ugly, intelligent/not-so-gifted...
The last thing I heard on this was that they'd decided to change the system based on feedback so that daughters won't be married off. Not sure if it's changed in the current release or not, but it's going to be fixed.
I agree with you totally, though I'm a male. It's somewhat more realistic the way they originally had it, but the "fun" factor isn't really there if you want a badass heroine leading your army and not just to be diplomacy bait.
When I play RPG's with my wife, I tend to create mostly females and my wife create mostly males. Hmm, perhaps something is terribly wrong with us
P.s.: We both love Gothic
Interestingly enough is aurore a 45 old male.
Um.
Onething Female heroes ARE IN THE GAME.
Don't whine about it without actually looking it up.
and Two, In the medieval ages women were KILLED for fighting most R.P.G's take place in a medieval esque time frame
so in games like total war and knights of honor ETC. it makes sense that they wouldn't fight as those games are suppost to *for the most part* be based on reality.
Now i myself don't mind females fighting as they historically have made fine generals and govener's when given the chance. I'm only pointing those two things out to you.
Edit: As a side note historically in most mythology Men have been the powerful mages/sorcerers witches were more or less moderate in power. Just making that statement to show why women are left out of most games not that your inferior simply that historically you have been treated as such. Its wrong yes but it is true.
Edit: I will say i am sorry if anyone was offended by what i said and please note i am not saying women are inferior or that they cannot fight or perform magic its simply that historically and mythologically most people undermined them and ignored them and even today in games of the sort they are prepositioned to that role not their fault.
At stardock the game developers really do believe in fairness and are not like others whom only based their games on this predesposition as such and since this is a Fantasy game it is quite easy to integrate them and to enjoy having them besides many great rulers have been women before and in this women can be SOV's
I do apologize however if i caused offense with my original post.
That's only if you believe the profile and/or assume that aurore has kept the same gender since 2003.
For newer folks interested in the general topic, there have been several threads in the past and ikros' Female friendly features thread has been getting occasional activity for almost six months.
Boom! Mind blown.
The problem with the internet is that a proportion of th epeople you meet on it believe themselves to be very smart, and do not hesitate to be insulting rather than using their brain before calling someone else a liar or claiming they know better than them what their own gender is. I hope you have more curtesy in person than online.
Let me see, am I a 45 year old male, which then makes my post totally pointless and me a liar, or am I perhaps the partner of one who happens to use the same copy of impulse as him because we have 1 pc and dont see the point of logging in and out of impulse every time we want to play a game?
I would apprciate it if in future you stuck to the thread topic instead of accusing people and behaving in a totally insulting and disrespectful manner, and yes you questioning my gender is doing exactly that, as any further personal information I then have to reveal because of your imature behaviour was none of your damn business in the first place.
As to the original thread topic, if they have indeed changed that since, then I am happy to read it. I was basing the point on the beta guide posted at the top of the thread.
History and Mythology were all written by men so it's not surprising to see women excluded or pushed back. The fact is, this is a fantasy game and I do hope they change it where daughters do indeed get to become heroes..
Um if you read my post They did.
Also women have been dominate several times in history and have been shown in cultures like Egypt etc. its just that overall they've been excluded.
Brilliant.
And how. Hadn't even remotely considered the notion that one forum ID might be two humans...
No disrespect intended, female half of aurore.
I just thought the idea of someone forgetting to "update" their gender awesome...
....LOL
Yes, Female Heroes will be in the game. Yes, you'll have control over who marries and who doesn't. Yes, I'm a male, and I'll be creating a Female Sov. And I don't even have an excuse like Kochujang where I have someone to play my opposite. I just find females easier on the eyes.... And please, don't misinterpret that as, "I think they're hot." Sometimes they are, it's true... But let's face it, the female form is just... Well, better, really. Some people don't like to play opposite-gender characters, and that's fine too. But, Stardock -is- giving us the choice, and that's good for us players/customers.
It was only meant as a small jab at you, but I didn't really think it through. Actually, my wife had a similar experience on our PC, where she logged on under my account. One would think I would have learned from that, but I'm a bit slow at times. I apologize for my post.
Appology accepted. Its not a bidg deal, mostly mmo frustration from people trying to establish gender so they can hit on you and then coming up with comments about no girls on the internet.
Ayway Im not a raging feminist. I posted here mostly because I find it frustrating in Total War that the 'no female generals' is hard coded badly enough that even moders cant get round it. Middle earth mod with no galadriel or eowyn is a shame, so I wanted to avoid the same problem here. Didnt realise it had already been addressed.
As to rpg's I just like to play characters I can identify with. Thats just me, not women in general. One of my friends, who is an attractive and inteligent woman, always plays the nastiest looking hairiest male character she can find in MMO's, ideally a troll or ogre or similar. Then she makes it no secret she is a woman, just to make life as hard as possible for the overhormoned teenagers who want to hit on her. Hard to hit on an ugly male troll even if you know its a woman behind the screen But in RPG's I like immersion and i want to feel like I am the one doing the ass kicking
I'm male, but for RPG's in the third person, I like to play females. If I'm going to be staring at my character's rear end for hours, I'd rather my character be female.
As for Galadriel and Eowyn, Eowyn was human and told not to fight, but she did anyway. Galadriel doesn't really count since she was an elf, several thousand years old, and a leader. But there are examples of heroic women in history--Joan d'Arc and Boudicca, and Cleopatra for example.
I am a male and tend to make all kinds of characters (either gender, various physical appearances, ect)
Usually the only consistent theme is that they are ALL generally Aggressive and Violent, as well as Respectful during Diplomacy (usually, sometimes they just manipulate people for power, and act with an Iron grip)
I think psychologists say that the characters you create in PC games and roleplaying are how you yourself REALLY want to be
Like when I was a kid and considered Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rambo to be manliness incarnate and SOO wanted to be like him. I was certain that nobody would pick at him in school.
Hmm?
So I REALLY want to be a half-dragon samurai, leader of my own brood, and the most brave and violent knight in the Draconian Armada?
Apparently
Honestly I don't see an issue with my heroes being men or women, as long as they do their jobs well I don't care! As to how the game is set up, I think it should not be an issue either but I don't program. It can't be that hard to make heroes of either sex or, should it arise both sexes at once! The question is will it change the way the game is played, I doubt it will, we all want to win! Hell an all female society and race could be an interesting way to go. I just hope the flexibility to play the game as such is thrown in!
True that. Psychologists can go take a hike - they have lots of fallacious ideas that are better left out of the mainstream.
I think the whole "you RPG who you really want to be" has been discredited for about 20 years, also with the idea that people stop being able to tell reality from fiction if they RP too much. Then again, with some people I meet...
