That is the price for the 16 gb wifi... the 64gb wifi is 699. The 64 gb 3g+wifi is 829. for a good comarison though
the asus eee is currently 450 with full windows 7 operating system. Since its 32 gb I'll compare it to the 32 GB model of Ipad which is currently 600 wifi and 729 for 3g+wifi. thats a 33% price increase for a system that doesnt even have a full operating system.. plus why pay and extra 129 for the 3g that you can hardly even get with that awesome at&t service.
also there is the lenoveo idea pad for 499 the has 250 gb storage and a 1.66 ghz procesoor and a 10.1 inch display and wireless n. and yes its multitouch as is the asus eee.
I just know that I won't be one of the iDiots ipurchasing the iPad when it's ireleased down iUnder.
In fact, with every company CEO and his idog jumping on the iBandwagon, I'm isick to the iback teeth with i prefixes.
I'm just curious... what purpose does the iPad serve? I mean, ideally, what is it designed for?
It is designed, my dear ZehDon, to part Applephiles from their money.
I'm not sure if it is over priced, Sure I would love to get the 64G Wi-Fi 3G model for 499 That is the price for the 16 gb wifi... the 64gb wifi is 699. The 64 gb 3g+wifi is 829. for a good comarison though
I know that, reread what I posted...
I've had some experience with touchscreen laptops mainly HP and I was not impressed, it felt like i need to work more to write with a stylus on the HP than on an actual notebook with pen and paper, the battery never reached it advertised capacity of 3 hours even though the screen was at 50% brightness and even with a spare battery I still had to make sure I sit next to a power outlet every where I go. The thing that really pissed me off was getting the blue screen of doom in the middle of lecture, not to mention that it got really hot and was heavy.
The only thing that I liked was the ability to to open 2 windows side by side.
@ZehDon I don't know it really depend on the user, for me I intend to use it for Uni, I already scan all of my lecture notes and I already download all the books I need instead of buying them for 50$ each so I mainly intend to use it as a portable library. I fully expect that by the time I'll get one there will be 3rd party apps to turn the iPad into a true "notebook" so I'll definitely get on of those also. I also have a huge eBook library that I collected over the years so reading them on a screen bigger than my iPhone would be nice.
Other than that, the rest (web surfing, games, movies and music) is just a bonus.
My friend on the other hand want to get it just for the SketchBook pro app and some other artsy apps (I don't get artists), according to him buying a portable electronic sketch pad will cost him half as much a 32g Wi-Fi iPad you he would need to connect it to a computer.
As I was saying, it can fill different needs, it's not a wonder device I wouldn't call it magical (than again unlike some other people who do call it magical I never held it) and there is a good chance that if you are a veteran computer user a full pledge laptop will be more suited for you, but than again it might not. My advice is to sit and look what apps are out for it and if you could make use of them and then decide whether it's worth buying or not.

People really need to stop comparing it to a Laptop, it's not designed to replace one, but has rendered the Netbook category pretty useless though.
Here's a little article about the some of the issues reviewers found after a weekend with it and sharing it with others to see their reactions/how they use it. Pretty much a lot of the same complaints mentioned here and elsewhere, but a couple of new ones I hadn't seen as well.
The Article is funny because it has a kernel of truth to it (greatly exagerated). But the comments are hilarious!
Jobs is getting his wish. This thread opened up Friday and already the comments are 3 pages long. You can't pay for that kind of publicity.
Down iUnder? Jobs bought Oz? Damn! He is rich.
Hmmm, interesting stuff. I've been looking into the iPad, mainly due to the hype, however I'm still failing to see what exactly it's supposed to do, as in - and not to be rude - what the hell do you buy it for? It's too heavy and expensive for an eReader, it doesn't have enough grunt for a Laptop, it doesn't have enough functionality or connectivity for a Notebook and it's too big for a multimedia device. Seriously, I fail to see what market this is tapping in to? Besides the iDiots, who line up outside an Apple store to get the next version of the iPhone, when the rest of us just order it off of eBay and wait an extra day.If it were slightly smaller, and lighter, and could multi-task, and had some USB slots or built in card-readers, and were easier to read in direct sun light I could possibly see a market for this. The fact that it can't be carried because it's too slippery and too awkward says to me that Apple have no idea what the hell its for. As it stands right now, a Notebook remains superior in every way from what I've read.
I disagree. Netbooks have USB and Firewire ports along with other input and out put devices. The Ipad does not.
plus you could buy a kindle and a netbook together for the same price
Netbooks are actually computers capable of running real operating systems. While they can't process as much as a full fledged lalptop, they're actually useful, unlike the iPad that can't do anything. It's moving in the wrong direction. You don't take a weak little device like a blackberry, an mp3 player, or a phone and move up to a powerful handheld computer. The correct way to achieve that goal is to take a computer, turn it into a laptop, and continue making it smaller and smaller as the technology develops. The iPad is a lame attempt by Apple to say: "Hey, look at us! We've achieved the future!" when they have done nothing of the sort.
Good point. In addition, you can hook up the rest of your "wish list" to a net book (you just do not have to carry them with you when you are on the go).
I have nothing against Apple either, and indeed appreciate their innovation (which seems to be the driving factor in many areas of PCs - as well as keeping MS honest). But I do not see this as more than an iPhone on Steroids. That is not bad, but if you want a small portable anywhere device, an iphone (or droid) is perfect. No one expects to do major computing with it, just check on email and such. Same with the iPad. Except it has a nice bigger screen (for us old folks) but does not fit in a pocket (and I am not going to buy a european shoulder bag).
I don't really agree with that. Apple is just as bad as Microsoft. Microsoft is an annoying monopoly that makes the occasional great product. Apple just kind of uses the somewhat justifiable anti-Microsoft sentiment to their advantage to propel their crappy products into the public spotlight. Also, our journey to the ultimate portable computer will be complete when we make watches that project keyboards onto any flat surfaces along with three dimensional monitors that come out of the watch face. Or we could just figure out how nerves interface with out brain and just implant computers in our brains
I have a specific business use for one, assuming it will indeed serve as a dumb terminal for a hosted Windows environment & be able to make use of network resources in that environment. If it does, there is nothing better out there for the purpose. But the number of people with this specific need will be relatively small.

The iPad isn't small enough to fit in your pocket, so it would be about as easy to carry around a laptop/netbook that would do everything the iPad would do for you and more.
I just love me some Apple bashing . Most ifad come latelys seem to have no idea Apple is only still around thanks to Bill Gates and Microsoft. Thirteen years ago Apple was in danger of going the way of the dinasour till Gates bailed them out with $150 Million dollars and developing some of their apps for Jobs and Co.. The very next year the first iMac rolls out and they're back on the map. Of course all this was a big help for MS as well. They were in the middle of fighting off a bunch of antitrust suits and what better way to try to show your not a monopoly than sinking a bunch of money into your biggest competitor. The thing/person the wanna be elitists hate the most is also what kept their precious kicking. There's not much that's more annoying than an Apple fanboy, well maybe a Yankees fan(boy am I asking for it ) so I don't mind reminding them of that.
Wow the Ipad! I might get one and install Battlefield Bad Comapny onto it, Oh Wait!, I cant
Looks Like I would have to stick with my laptop then.
I spend all my time on my laptop and phone, either texting away, or doing coursework, and as I am at university, I spend 8 hours a day at least on my laptop doing coursework, the only break I get from my laptop is either I am going out, or reading a book. Why do I need an Ipad to read a book? I have been looking at a screen for at least 8 hours ( + TV screen), do I really need to read a book from another LCD screen? What the hell is wrong with a book made with paper?
Steve Jobs aka Apple dont reveloutionise products, they get existing products, add the Apple brand name, overprice the product and BAM! you get iAMADICK!
I like the iPod, but why the hell add a camra to it? Do I need another camera? Havent I already got a camera, and a camera in built into my phone, having a camera in my ipod is pointless.
The Hawk says this, know your role, and shut your mouth steve Jobs!
P.S. if you are getting an ipad, go for it, I aint, the Hawk beleives, its a waste of his money. Listen to the Hawk, the Hawk is wise, the Hawk has conquered masses of Vasari and Tec players over the years, hes beaten the best, his ego is unbeatable, becuase the Hawk is great.
Some say, the Hawk knew about Command and Conquer 4, and if he had the chance, he would have beaten the EA team to death with his VooDoo 5 graphics card....
Split -
Like I said, a specific business need that it may be well-suited for. For this specific purpose, and assuming it works, it will be better than a laptop, which is what I'm having to use now. If I get one, it won't be used for any other 'computing' purposes, but I might well take advantage of it as a reader & travel-surfer as long as I have it - that would be the only time I would 'carry it around' in the sense you mean it.
As it happens, if I need to replace my laptop & end up purchasing an iPad to boot, the cost combined will still be about the same as what I paid for the laptop I'm currently using.
great then someone can hack my brain....and then steve jobs can release the Ibrain!!
the hawk is smart!!! oh and to adder Go Pinstripes!!!
Don't hassle the hawk
Oh god, I couldn't resist!
I still don't really understand the "specific business need." Everything your talking about sounds like it could be done on a netbook. Considering the iPad iSN'T really that much more portable and a netbook is cheaper, it sounds like it wouldn't really do you much good. The screen isn't really designed to be a reader, it would basically function like a netbook with an extra small screen.
iPad? i dont think so, it seems a bit lacking in things at the min and in a strange way reminds me of those early mobiles that were like a house brick lol
Perhaps for sitting on a couch and surfing the web, but on my netbook I can surf the web, MULTITASK, PLAY FLASH GAMES, install linux and windows 7, play movies off the internet (that isn't .mov), check the weather, play games from 1995-2010 (ipad can't play fallout 1 and 2, instant loss), etc etc etc.
The ipad may be win if you like surfing the web on the couch, but a netbook is far better if you do more then dick around on a pc.
@starkers....
It won't be called that, mate. It'll be called the.....iHop (for the 'roos!) . For us in the ...errrr....US that's not to be confused with IHOP.
Oh yes....whatever you do, don't buy the starkers app...you know what it'll do!
