My idea is that we should have some options to place traps on the battlefield(field prep where you might have line of pointed stakes placed close together and disguised at a bottom of a pit) or some flammable liquid as in Braveheart. I think there should be both mechanical and magical traps. I think very few battles are truly of the ambush variety. Most battles the opposing armies know who they are fighting and roughly where and when. They have time to set up field fortifications, formations, logistic routes and caravans, and scout out the opposing side.
I would like to place various traps around my Kingdom. I realize we don't want every faction to have access to the same technologies. Maybe, have 2-3 factions that have signigicant trap utilization skills.
Mechanical Traps-
Caltrops for quick defense before imminent attack or to delay forces.
Disguised or hidden pool or pits of stakes, acid, boiling oil, pitch and tar, hungry animals, etc.
Moats filled with burning oil or dangerous creatures.
Magical Traps-
A spell that allowed me to Ward an area with a Glyph or Rune. Whenever area is approached the enchantment takes effect and results in a audible glamour effect. Mysterious colours and lights flash with strange noises. If the area is advanced upon then a resulting explosion doing X amount of damage in area of effect.
A misdirection effect. Units become lost or confused.
A web on the units.
Would be nice if we have the ability to control where these traps were placed. Some quests should also have traps as part of the adventure. If this topic is already discussed and done I apologize and please redirect me.
Excellent idea. This would really add a new strategical element to the game.
I imagine you also meant for these traps to be hidden (i.e. not detectable by enemy units)? I think that should be the case, but perhaps also with some units or technologies/spells allowing a chance to reveal hidden traps.
Thanks Istari. Yea definitely hidden from enemy view with chances for detection/disarm in some cases. I was thinking somesort of spot placement before battles would also make the battles a little more exciting. The traps could have major or minor battle impacts.
Seconded. Anyone ever played with KOEI strategy games? Example: Romance of the Three Kingdoms. You can place various traps on the strategical map & on the battlefield maps as well in their games. I always loved it.
Maybe for Traps Elemental may be able to borrow from Dwarf Fortress, and let Channelers and there Castle Engineers make unique traps such as Drowning Machines, to kill off pesky traders that come from enemy empires, or player empires since any player in competative game that trades you will try to get something that benefits him more then what he's offering you, or a gate house that will snap shut when the enemy enters then fill up with magma killing the enemy that dares to try attacking through the front door. These Traps of course will be defensive castle traps. Maybe those types of traps can be a specialty of the Gilden, or more technological fallen empires.
Interesting thought... Mechanical traps would need to be set well ahead of time, but magical ones might be able to be created "on the fly". This would certainly add an interesting dynamic to battles.
The Mechanical Traps I mentioned would be built into Castles. I would love to watch a preview of where Frogboy shows the Drowning Machine in action, or the Magma Gate House trap in action
Lol ... why are you killing Merchants?
Well my friends who play Dwarf Fortress do so to take there stuff, if you Drown them you can keep there items, if you use magma the items get destroyed. If I were to play Gildren they would be more Xenophobic then the Empire of Man in Warhammer 40k. Though I think I will play Tarthan.
