Also, I'd say that we didn't muck up. It just seemed kind of wrong after we'd fought two world wars to stop another country obtaining an empire... The British Empire was an outdated system by the 1900s. (Also, who was going to argue with America over whether countries should have self-determination?) The military empire has had its time. Now, the key way of controlling another country... is with money.

As far as I know, Star Ocean is a sci-fi/fantasy RPG, and is available on some consoles, though I know nothing of PC availability, nor general plotline.
