Man, Command & Conquer 4 is getting slaughtered by the reviews. On Gamespot, it's getting an average 3.4 out of 10 by the users, after 734(!) users reviewed it. What a disappointment! I was waiting for this. I'm glad I waited for the reviews.
*Pokes his head out of his intentional bubble of ignorance for a moment*
They made C&C games after Westwood closed down? What the hell are you guys smoking?
*Goes back in*
They did do a good job on CnC3 single player and KW for multiplayer but besides that it all stunk since EA took over.
You, my friend, are either brain-dead or a troll.
Agreed.
Probably both.
I'd say you are the troll here. Having played the Beta I must admit that the game actually is quite fun (Ill probably buy it when the game is cheaper and I do have some money to spend).
Graphics are not overwhelming but they are not bad either.
I experienced not many bugs at all, no ctds etc.
I did not experience many connection problems.
The interface is simple and gives a very good overview.
Overall the controls are very intuitive.
The game is quite balanced.
So basically the production values are quite good. It is of course your right to not like the design decisions they made. I personally for example almost hated the music and would have preferred the classic industrial sound. Nonetheless I still did have fun. The game was made with multiplayer in mind. And if you like games MP centered games like Dota, Demigod chances are that you might like CnC4. Heck Ive bought DoW2 and did play more than 2 missions because I do not like the interface which is just overloaded compared to CnC4 or Demigod.
There is a lot in CnC4 that could be improved (why only a Domination mode? Destroying the enemy is much more fun), but in the end it is quite good at what it tries to achieve. Being a fast paced multiplayer team based strategy game. It's not really what the franchise did stand for (for me CnC was always a SP player game), but than I still could play it for the videos (RA3 was worse in my opinion but still fun thanks to the videos and hell march) and the MP.
At least it does have Kane, GDI, NOD, B-Movie actors and a video storyline. IMHO this alone would make the title more CnC than the Generals franchise...
Uhm... have you seen the story? It takes continuity, screws it up and throws it out the window...
Spoiler: In this game, Kane wants to get rid of all the Tiberium and leave Earth. His reasons are never explained.
Nope, I have to admit that I've only seen the trailer so far. Storyline might be a letdown but sadly there are not many games using real actors nowadays. Like I said the music was quite a big letdown for me. In CnC3 just starting the game already let to a CnC feeling with the industrial sound in the game menu (I really liked CnC3 as it was going back to the roots). For me the way the story was told always was the most important thing that made CnC stand out of other RTSs (and that basically is the reason I would not really consider Generals CnC).
Still, if you're just looking at the game and do not consider it part of the CnC franchise, it is not a bad game per se. I've heard that the SP part (which was always a very important part) should not be very good. Looking at the design decisions this would not be really surprising. Nobodys blaming Dota or Demigod for their lack of SP as they are designed as MP games. I probably would never play CnC3 in MP as I like turtling and at the end rushing in with lots of Venoms/Mammoths etc. but I did have fun playing MP games in CNC4 Beta.
Maybe these design decisions were even influenced by the online community. C&C franchise was in the beginning much about late game rushes with tier 3 units, strong turtling in the beginning. In SP player it can be very fun just amassing a massive army and then steamrolling everything. Something that does not really work in MP where balance is everything and competitive players prefer aggressive strategies. These players usually are the ones sending out ideas and putting pressure on developers. Most SP gamers probably do not care to even register on forums. Maybe the developers just got a wrong idea about the number of MP players compared to SP players in the franchise and gave in to demands of the MP crowd, who got what they "wanted": A game designed speciifically for MP.
Hmm... I don't like the levelling thing. It was obviously inspired by the success of a similar idea in COD, but it's not as well implemented. In COD, everything you unlocked was useful, as long as you were a smart player. In C&C 4, you start off with only basic units, and have to work your level up before you can use anything powerful. The best way to do this? Campaign (if you can stand the way they destroyed the entire Tiberium plotline) or winning multiplayer. Now here's the catch. In a game, there will usually be a lot of higher level players, who, until you reach a certain point, should walk over you (unless they are incredibly bad at the game). So it takes a while after getting the game to get to a level for the awesome (well balanced) battles that you see in other C&Cs.
This is exactly what happened. One of the dev's even said that only 10-20% of the people that played CnC 3 finished the campaign. Of course that and the new games design turned the forums into a complete flame fest. And if they wanted to make a "new" type of CnC they shouldn't have done it with the conclusion of the tiberian universe. And by the way I watched the storyline videos on youtube and the story is absolutely horrible. This is coming from someone who liked the videos from all the other installments.
You know for all its problems Red Alert 3 did give us one of the most awesome things EVER seen in a video game:
You know it's true
I did like the story line for it but the fixed refineries and weak structures(2 helicopters could destroy an anti-air gun for example) killed the game. I think EA just did that and then got rid of it in CnC 4 because the still couldn't figure out harvester pathfinding.
Just funny coincidence maybe, but if you go to Steam and search for Disciples 3 the search will return Command and Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight.
That, my friend, is a Very Inventive way to do a spoiler. Well done.
Don't Hassle the Hoff, man.
Edit: kick-ass Avatar btw. Man, I love Pink Floyd. Probably one of the best bands of All Time.
