Not sure if this obvious thread has been created already - sorry if it has...
Anyway, just curious what SD thinks of Valves latest move!?
I am ofc referring to their decision to port STEAM as well as entire Valve catalogue to Mac platform...
If that wasn't enough already - apparently they are talking to all Steam publishers to consider Mac ports as well and are apparently quite certain fair few will do exactly that...
Now, how about Impulse for Mac!?!?
And of course Sins
Are you guys looking at Mac platform at all and what are your general thoughts on this latest Valve related news?
All the best!
How about following Steam's other move: ditching IE as the browser. Webkit or Gecko would be way better for everyone!
Sure...
Personally, I ditched IE as well as Windows almost 3 years ago and moved to Mac.
Being a gamer, I am kinda forced to use BootCamp to play Sins and couple of other games but quite frankly, if possible at all, I would rather play my games on Mac...
It looks like Valve agrees with me, we know that Blizzard agrees as well, we also know that DICE is pretty much there as well... With latest news it sounds like many others will join as well (at least according to Valve)...
So, my question still stands, what about SD and IC!?
What about Impulse?
Just curious that's all
I still web browse on my Mac, but I've practically made the complete switch to Windows, due entirely to Impulse.
Firefox FTW, anyways just get bootcamp and install windows on you mac much better running it now, beats my old pc till i get a new one soon.
First they need to get rid of MS.Net Framework, which is used by impulse.
@Killz
I am running BootCamp already man
In fact, since the day one I made switch to Mac...
It runs great and it is awesome - yes...
But quite frankly I would rather play my fav games natively on Mac
Hence this thread...
Would you ask a Mac focused developer to make the jump to Windows?
You know ports are not that good... seems they just port everything over from the consoles to pc these days mainly fps games.
Why get a Mac when you can get a PC..?
Had a Mactaliban in my class....Mac, Itunes, Iphone and the list goes on....
i didn't get it, its my mum's and its better then my old computer about 30%-40ish% but that is a lot, going to get a pc in less then 2 months
I didn't respond to you in particular, but good going son!
Welcome to the winning side
which is the winning side? both have postives and negitives a lot more virus for windows but mac barly has any games to play. they both come close in terms of performence these days so we can't really say there is a winning side overall.
Apple products are way more expensive than they should be considering their capabilities.
There will be no Impulse for the Mac any time soon.
I like the Mac. I have a Mac. But it's not where I think to do gaming.
So does that mean that all the games you can purchase through Valve/Steam will be MAC native apps?
If not, what's the point in porting just the delivery system?
Valve is also planning to port their games to the Mac. It makes sense that they'd port Steam too so that they can sell their games to Mac users on their own service. Afterall, Blizzard does the same thing via Battle.net (though with less fanfare).
If I had a library of titles that used a single engine that I could port to the Mac I'd want to have a service to make it easy for mac users to purchase. What Valve is doing makes good sense to me.
So does that mean you are thinking of porting SD games to the Mac?
Do you think the Mac gamers would generate enough income to offset the cost to generate a profit?
Mac users are, at best, 20% of computer users. How many of those are true gamers?
The Mac platform is as good or better for certain things, but gaming has always been a PC thing. Mac's are simply not made for hardware tweaking, and you need that flexibility to build a truly outstanding gaming machine.
So, I don't agree that 'what Valve is doing makes good sense'.
Or maybe I am simply living in the 'old world', where Mac's were not at all that customizable. Am I simply behind the times?
Most PC gamers don't have "outstanding gaming machines". Most don't even have "good gaming machines".
@Frogboy
I don't quite understand the logic of "not thinking to do your gaming on Mac" ...
Hardware wise, Mac is virtually identical to PC these days while input devices (mouse and keyboard) are same as well...
As a gamer, I cant care less on what my game is running as long as I am having smooth experience and am not forced to use input devices I don't like (read console controllers)...
Only difference between Mac and PC is OS and most (if not all) developers would find developing for Mac way easier due to Apple's "closed eco system" - meaning less bugs, less time waste optimising your game for trillion possible PC configurations, more stable final product and ultimately smoother end-user experience...
Anyway...
Regarding Valve - my feeling is that there is much more behind all this than what's been reported so far... Yes, Steam is coming to Mac and yes Mac users will soon be able to play HL, TF, L4D, Portal and other games... But my 6th sense is telling me that Apple together with other major publishers like EA, Valve, etc... is planing something for the long term future as well... Perhaps some sort of Apple console? Perhaps full gaming compatibility between desktop/laptop - Apple TV / Console - and future revisions of upcoming iPad?
Imagine starting game of Elemental or Sins on your desktop during lunch hour break, saving your progress and continuing the same game from your living room when you get back home or indeed in the train using iPad...
Crazy ideas that will most likely never happen - but I am still positive that there is much more behind this Apple / Valve deal than what we are allowed to see at the moment
As for why Mac instead of PC - my honest answer is that I am simply tired... Tired of spending half of my time patching or updating either windows, or drivers or anti virus software or indeed buggy game releases...
Saying that, Mac isn't without its own problems - not at all!, but compared to Windows its really breath of fresh air when it comes down to user experience.
All the best with hopes that one day we see Impulse and Sins running on Mac
Macs don't have DirectX, I believe they use OpenCL (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), so it's not like you can just put steam on the Mac an instantly have all the games on their store work on the Mac. Only the the games that valve is porting will work. Also macs aren't quite as easy to upgrade as PCs
Apple console? lol the iPlay? It costs $2000 and the games cost $150 each. Its features a clean white interface. The controllers only have one stick and one button - thats all you need on a mac.
You can upgrade it, by buying a new one. The new one costs more and has less features but is thinner and is a different colour.
Despite being named like a vibrator thousnads of apple fans queue for months to get one, and when they finally have it in their hands - put it on thier shelf and never use it again but will vehemently defend how awesome it is on the internet for the rest of their lives.
Please no, no apple consoles.

Won't work. Macs have such petite market share they simply can't be a main development platform for any developer without suicidal tendencies, so you still have to design the game primarly around Windows and then at most just do the porting to Mac, that's the only financial viable way I'm afraid
Not only that, but developer tools are like a million times better on Windows than on Mac (nothing comes close to Visual Studio...).
Frogboy, any thoughts of making a version of Impulse for the TI-89? Honestly, Mac's are for teenage girls, people who don't understand/need complex features, or can't carry a laptop. You can't/shouldn't game on a Mac. You can't even do graphic design anymore.
I am hoping for an OS/2 version of Impulse.
