I just need some help..I love this game but it gets so unplayable in the latter stages. I play with all the settings turned down to low and the empire tree is off. I don't use mines but this game...It gets so laggy it takes like 10mins to get to another planet
What can be done?
This question has been asked many many times and every couple of days.
Even pc's with high specs have the same problem.
This game is designed for single core cpu, 32bit and only uses 2gb of memory.
There is some mod out there to make it use 4gb of ram, though i have not tried this.
Turn off the display of all trade ships, bloom etc and anything else you can, or play on smaller maps.
Use maps with smaller numbers of AIs (maps with ten AIs can make ten main fleets). Also, keep pirate bases in mind--lots of them are just like lots of players--they use a lot of resources. Large maps with lots and lots of worlds take more pc resources as well. Open a large map in Galaxy forge then zoom in close and see how slow it is.
You might try making some small maps and adding/subtracting pirate bases to get an idea of what point your comp gets too loaded. Don't run other applications in the background. Hopefully someone will develop a dual core patch for this game some day. It could happen.
Do you know how much RAM and what CPU is in your computer?
Without knowing your specs or how big a map (and how many AI's) you're playing on, it's difficult to say whether this is predictable or not. There's a temptation to create maps with hundreds of planets, but typically the game doesn't perform well (both in terms of performance on your machine and in terms of quality of gameplay) at above 150 planets. If you're playing on a homebrewed scenario with 200 or 300 planets, that's your problem right there.

plenty of processor power, but idk about the video card. that really does tell us the model.
3gb of ram would be best in your case also. all that is true about the 32bit etc, but really the video card seems to be the biggest bottleneck on most systems. i know i have the same issue.

Weird, your system completely blows away the generic laptop I'm using to play Sins, but I never have a slowdown, no matter how big the mapsize I play.

Is it because I use the distant suns mod?
When the game gets to the point where every side has big fleets and developed planets it can take forever for a fleet of mine to make it out of a GW of a gas giant. Like 5 mins. The more I zoom out the slower it is. When the game gets to like the 8 hour point it can take one fleet a very long time to make one jump.

I have a single core Athlon XP and am not having it as bad as you--maybe the difernt mod elements contribute to it.
Try the exact same map one in the mod and one outside it and compare.
It's Distant Stars. Why didn't you mention you were using a mod from the get-go?
CTRL ALT DELETE close all non essiental programs, IE FIREFOX, UTORRENT, not that I know what utorrent is. ITUNES, AOL, anything else that isnt needed, there is also a way to divert more of the computer to the processes, Start control panel system properties, then, you will see general computer name hardware, goto advance (Performace Options) Advanced make sure you have a decent ammount in the paging, I use 2880. Or you can simply right click your My Computer on the Desktop. And it works fine for me

and select start up and close all the crap that boots when you turn your computer on so it wont eat so much memory.
