Now, Stardock should get credit for being honest and upfront. Also, I understand you guys are a business. I'm not talking about Securom necessarily here, but the truly excessive DRM like AC2/SH5.
I think it might be a good business move to not have games like AC2 on Impulse at all.
I'd say Impulse game customers tend to fall into 3 categories (not exclusive)
a) Stardock fans
anti-drm zealots
c) People who want the sales and tend to be price sensitive
I can't see any of those groups buying it. You guys yanking AC2 might hurt your relations with Ubi , but they're name is being dragged into the mud, and you'd get some good publicity for "making a stand against stupidity"
Now, you shouldn't do this on everything, but I think in a case like this, you could make some cheap points, which may lead to profits down the road, and I can't see AC2 making you guys too much money as is.
A shame EA's real DRM scheme these days is to shut down multiplayer servers after extremely short periods of time. While I don't care much for sports games, they shut down the Madden 2009 servers as soon as Madden 2010 was released. Even if many people are going to migrate to the newer one, I kind of expect more than a year of multiplayer support for my $60 game.
They are doing a similar thing with CnC 4 right now... If you buy CnC3/Kanes wrath you cant register it to play online to force you to buy the new one. And when you ask for help on the forums they act deliberatley obtuse and act like you were talking about CnC 4 and point you in that direction....Maybe we should start putting up posters and websites to boycott EA games.
Hell I've already personally boycotted them.
If Stardock started dictating to others what they may or may not do I'd quit and start a competing company.
People should decide what is and isn't acceptable through their free choices. Not corporations.
I wasnt saying impulse should tell people not to buy drm games . Just to make it clear what games have it. Giving people information about the purchase they are about to make isnt making the choice for them but helps them make an educated decision....
Im a dumbass your probably talking to the OP
Exactly! Just make it very clear what I'm buying. Don't sneek it in. Don't replace the drivers on my optical drive without giving me fair warning. Don't hide your little DRM scheme in the EULA and expect people to read it. Don't put it on your demos either you flipping morons. (Ubisoft & EA)
Stardock already does that.
Well Stardock doesn't tell companies what they can and can't do, but they do mention what should and should not be done. Stardock 100% needs to be clearer, upfront, proactive and detailed about the DRM on third party titles, and I mean as soon as it is on sale (pre-orders) not after the release and have forum members asking them why it's not posted yet.
I picked up Starforce for the first time because of a fking demo. DRM on a demo is just insane.
Yeah EA server issues are not lost on me. They did it with Conquest too, fortunately, i heard what a pos game that was and avoided it like everyone else. It's unfortunate because once in awhile i would like a sports title for my console, but I would probably only ever buy one which makes the whole idea pointless since I would be locked out of the game in as soon as a years time.
