Originally developed by Cavedog back in 1997, the rights eventually came into the hands of Atari who has given us permission to re-release it.
Stardock is handling the support for Total Annihilation directly and includes a new launcher that helps automatically configure the game for modern systems, streamlines getting multiplayer games going and includes easy access to tips and tricks for getting the most out of it.
As part of Stardock's support for the game, it will be releasing subsequent updates (with Atari's permission) to further streamline multiplayer, incorporate Impulse Reactor and work with fan sites to incorporate new content into the "official" release. It will also be further enhancing the release to prepare it for eventual availability on other digital distributors.
In other words, we’re treating Total Annihilation similarly to a newly released title with ongoing updates wherever possible.
The package includes Total Annihilation + Core Contingency as a single integrated package.
What makes Total Annihilation particularly special is that (depending on your modern setup and trouble shooting skills) you can get the game playing at crazy high resolutions and the game runs fine.
Total Annihilation at 2500x1600
Now, a word of warning – if you’re a PC novice, Total Annihilation won’t be for you. It’s a serious RTS and, depending on your setup, we are talking about a game developed 14 years ago when DirectX 3 was state of the art. Running it in a window has had good success for me on my Windows 7 64-bit desktop.
If you try to run it full-screen at a very high resolution you can end up with a goofy color mess of it. Anything beyond 1024x768 in full screen can be a crap shoot but if you run it windowed, you can go nuts. Back in 1997, anything beyond 1024x768 probably seemed like science fiction. The fact it will run at 2500x1600 is just…wow.

Anyone try TA on their netbook?
I have played ta on a 486 at 640 x 480 256 colours, so a netbook should have no problems
harpo
Am I the only one who gets a crash to desktop if any resolution is used besides 1024x768? I tried windowed and fullscreen with the same results. I'm using an NVidia 8800 GTS on Vista 32bit (SP2 I think). Maybe I'm the only one still using Vista (upgrading is such a pain)? It would really be nice to boost up the resolution.
edpfister, is the crash during the loading of the map/units?
i have used it at vaious resolutions (640X480 8 bit to 1920X1080 32 bit) on win95,98,xp32 bit and win7 64bit (original discs version with all patches) without any difficulties that could not be tracked to particular units/unit packs.
one other thought is there is an issue in the 175.6 nvidia driver (mentioned on the nviia download page) and it might be worth trying a rollback of the video driver.
bloody forum double post.
NEED POST delete function!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm thinking a netbook could run it of couse. What I wonder though is if you could set the resolution to make use of the odd netbook settings like 1024 x 600.
I threw the demo onto a thumb drive and ran it on my wife's netbook. And I'll be danged 1024 x 600 is supported!!
I'm getting more into this series so I think I'll get TA. I've been playing Warzone 2100 more also and I'm really enjoying it. Also SC and SC:FA
For those complaining about no music: Just burn the mp3's onto an audio CD (no need for a blank track at the beginning) and make sure to remove out the 2 second pause-between-tracks command. It works wonderfully in-game.
I have also run ta from a usb stick.
Are you implying that the game will know what to play from the CD as you run the game? If so, that is an interesting workaround.
The game is hard-coded to look for a CD-rom and play it, iirc.
The original game was designed to play the music off a CD; putting the music onto a CD isn't so much a workaround as restoring the original design.
Ok does anyone know how to play this game online?
I downloaded and installed warzone but when i open it i get an error message stating "Error getting server info: Socket error #10013 Acces denied."
I finally got around to grabbing this excellent deal. One note that may or may not help others concerning the color mess at >1024x768. Everytime it does it to me at 1440x900 I just hit F2 to bring up the menu, hit options then sound. I don't even have to hit any actual options, just the act of clicking on "sound" to bring up it's menu fixes the colors right up everytime. This is on Win7 64bit, fullscreen and may not work for everyone/setup. This fixes it until my desktop changes backgrounds(every 30 minutes) or a new map gets loaded, then I just repeat the above to get it back right.
Track 1 DOES need to be added in order for TA to play the appropriate music (it switches tracks according to the amount of action ingame), also track 1 will never be played by TA (it was the data track on the original TA disc).
sounds pretty cool that another mod of TA is in the works.

I am in a clan and we play the Twilight mod. it is real fun.

sup gamma and wizard
@derek: I got that problem once. Not too sure how I fixed it... I think I had to reset my router. When I was getting those errors when trying to log onto Warzone, a lot of other stuff was messed up. Such as Halo online, my Internet browsers, MSN, ect...
you bought the DL. lol..ok

old fart?
yea guys come play on www.ewarzone.com usually 200+ different people on everyday. games go on constantly. ITS FREE!
My first CD I burned for it had a blank track at the beginning and it played the said track as the first battle song. I ended up having to burn it again without the blank track and it worked fine. I have no idea why this is, save for perhaps the game treating the cd as a standard music CD instead of a data one?
The Total Annihilation Universe site should be part of Stardock's forum.
Any updates on additional new content for this game?
I bought and downloaded the TA game from Impulse. I am not enjoying the game now because of the 200 unit limit. I can't seem to raise it with the patches, and text editing suggestions. #1 - Where do I place the newly created .ini file as placing it in the TA folder in Program Files doesn't work. #2 - So the filename should be "totala.ini" ? HELP! I want to finish the game I'm in and MOVE ON!
