Originally developed by Cavedog back in 1997, the rights eventually came into the hands of Atari who has given us permission to re-release it.
Stardock is handling the support for Total Annihilation directly and includes a new launcher that helps automatically configure the game for modern systems, streamlines getting multiplayer games going and includes easy access to tips and tricks for getting the most out of it.
As part of Stardock's support for the game, it will be releasing subsequent updates (with Atari's permission) to further streamline multiplayer, incorporate Impulse Reactor and work with fan sites to incorporate new content into the "official" release. It will also be further enhancing the release to prepare it for eventual availability on other digital distributors.
In other words, we’re treating Total Annihilation similarly to a newly released title with ongoing updates wherever possible.
The package includes Total Annihilation + Core Contingency as a single integrated package.
What makes Total Annihilation particularly special is that (depending on your modern setup and trouble shooting skills) you can get the game playing at crazy high resolutions and the game runs fine.
Total Annihilation at 2500x1600
Now, a word of warning – if you’re a PC novice, Total Annihilation won’t be for you. It’s a serious RTS and, depending on your setup, we are talking about a game developed 14 years ago when DirectX 3 was state of the art. Running it in a window has had good success for me on my Windows 7 64-bit desktop.
If you try to run it full-screen at a very high resolution you can end up with a goofy color mess of it. Anything beyond 1024x768 in full screen can be a crap shoot but if you run it windowed, you can go nuts. Back in 1997, anything beyond 1024x768 probably seemed like science fiction. The fact it will run at 2500x1600 is just…wow.

Did you have to sell your souls!?!?!
This is the best news since sliced bread!!!!!!!!
My god, TA what an incredible game. Quite glad I still have the original discs, and expansions!
Double post Win!
Good, really good. But...
you should point out the issue in running it on the store page, the minimum requirement could make people thing that the game will run if you have that system or above which as you said it's not completly true.
second thing: how come you manage to get regional price even for a '97 game? I wish it came out on GoG.
indeed is good that you'll manage the support for the game and maybe you could even do something to make it run better on newer systems.
I love you Frogboy. So fucking much.
Convince Atari to re-release Master of Magic.
Very good news.
This is really great news.
I'm hesitant to buy it right now because I already own 4 copies of Total Annihilation, 2 copies of The Core Contingency, and 1 copy of Battle Tactics. (I wanted to make sure I had backup copies, so most of those are still factory sealed).
I am curious about a couple of things.
I noticed a similar funky colors problem with starcraft and master of orion 2 in fullscreen under windows 7. On the internet, I found a weird, but working, solution to the problem:
Make sure you have the "Screen resolution" window open in the background. The one you get if you right-click on the desktop and select "screen resolution". Don't do anything with the window, just have it open in the background while running the game in fullscreen. It solved the funky color problems with Moo2 and starcraft, so I imagine it would work for TA as well.
Can you guys acquire Dark Reign next?
Ignore these base requests for revival of feeling in games.
Instead smack Chris Taylor and tell him to make the REAL SupCom2 (i.e. Total Annhilation 3! SC2 is an affront!!). Please.
I bought TA plus Core Contoigency so many years ago now. I loved the water bases in the expack, my little pelicans with thier little shootery guns. Ah patrol boats. Anti-aircraft, I love thee.
" It will also be further enhancing the release to prepare it for eventual availability on other digital distributors."
Do not release this on Steam, they don't deserve it . ( reason: no SupCom 2 on Impulse )
Gods...must resist purchase, I have bills to pay until next week!
Absolutely Awesome news this, out to show its "spiritual" cop-out successor what real RTS is all about.
Holy shit!
And I didn't think I would see anything more awesome than the new halo trailer today.
If you'll excuse me I need to get some fresh underwear...
Frogboy, could we see a minor graphics update? It doesn't need to be major, just update the textures so my eyes don't bleed. Pretty please? The gameplay is already awesome. It doesn't need that much of an update. Please make it look a little better. I will be in gratitude to you forever if you did this.
If the graphics were better, we'd have a game with awesome gameplay that looked pretty swank. Anyone else agree that this should be done?
Epiphenomenon: if you want better graphics, go play TA Spring or Supreme Commander, to be honest...
Does the map editor work like the old one? It was easy enough to use although it always crashed on me, I'm guessing this one will be much more stable.
How well is the multiplayer running? What features dows it currently have?
I will almost certainly end up rebuying TA but I may wait and play my original retail copy until I get some bills out of the way. If there are enough current improvements I may shell out now.
I do play SupCom. I want to try TA, but I'm refraining until it looks better. I'm not too picky about graphics. It's just too hard for me to perceive the 3d in the game.
You not only got the rights to distribute TA, but you're going to improve it? You guys are awesome.
I actually kept this game installed and played it occasionally up until around SupCom (SupCom 1, which also sadly never got a sequel). I'm more than happy to pay again to support this.
The 3d really isn't going to get much better, the perspective is fixed. I'm more interested in making/downloading new units and maps. A unit manager would be really awesome!
lol Stardock you legends...this game is still beautiful too, especially when you finally get to see fifty moho mines swimming through the air without a single dropped frame. Or putting a hundred hawks on patrol over an enomous base and watching them curve through the air on 2010 technology...
Hey...any chance of some new "IMMENSE" maps...how hard could it be? Are you sewing the 1500 unit patch into the install?
love u guys...srsly...
All TA needs in my book is strategic zoom.
This will make it the perfect game.
Frogboy, please allow me to worship the ground on which you tread.
Now that that is over, what kind of custom units will you be adding to TA? Full races, expansion mods, what?
Btw. what file do I have to edit to get higher resolutions? Currently the game only offers 1280x1024 max for me in windowed mode.
