"CLIMATE scientists yesterday stunned Britons suffering the coldest winter for 30 years by claiming last month was the hottest January the world has ever seen. The remarkable claim, based on global satellite data, follows Arctic temperatures that brought snow, ice and travel chaos to millions in the UK.At the height of the big freeze, the entire country was blanketed in snow. But Australian weather expert Professor Neville Nicholls, of Monash University in Melbourne, said yesterday: “January, according to satellite data, was the hottest January we’ve ever seen."
Wow!.
Global warming must be real! We really need to takes some serious steps to curtail this planetary heat wave, which threatens to cover so much of the earth in snow and ice!!!
This warming trend that has brought record high global temperatures this past month, and year (indeed this past decade - even though it has been admitted by the lead 'scientist' that there has been no significant warming in the past 15 years...), and record snowfalls to so many areas on the planet, must be STOPPED!!!
The only way I can see to do it effectively is to cap CO2 emissions, or at least introduce a trade system whereby heavily polluting industries can buy 'carbon credits' from lesser polluters so they can keep pumping out their normal amounts whilst passing the costs onto the stupid consumers.
Funny, but I don't see anything about how much higher the temps were. And I don't see anything about which data was used, or how much it would cost if a private person were to try and recreate the data. Because I just did a search on my local area of San Diego. The data I wanted, from just three stations in my area, would cost me nearly $700 to obtain.
When will the madness end? We are burning up, even as we are trying so desperately to keep warm.
Our coastal cities are being flooded as we type - so 'they' say.
Nero fiddled as Rome burned. Are we doing the same?
Or, did he know something we have yet to grasp?
Maybe we simply need to live and adapt with an ever changing planet, instead of trying to be control-freaks that try to control even Mother Nature.
*ROFL* Priceless!
if you think it is winter you forget half of the earth south of the aquator
Earth - 150 MILLION square km
England - 0.13 million square km
You're telling me that because England, < 0.1% of the surface of the Earth is having a cold winter, that means January can't be the warmest month on record for the ENTIRE WORLD?
Do you have any idea how Science works?
Also, are you insane?
I don't forget. I know that fact.
Even so, it changes nothing.
There have been a few reports of higher than normal temps in the past months, but dozens of lower than normal. (at least, from what I have had access to)
But while local weather does not necessarily equate to global climate - overall weather does equate to global climate.
I find it rather funny that this article mentions 'scientists', but only refers to a single one - and that one being 'south of'.
Who are the other scientists that say that 01-2010 is the warmest January on record?
Sure, I do.
So the sea levels rise, and we move inland. The sea levels fall, and we move outward. It has been so since the dawn of Man.
Hehe, no, he's not insane I think. He's just your standard run of the mill denialist.
Eh, arguments from incredulity never get old, eh?
Only time will tell, I guess.
But by that time - we will all be dead and buried.
Hottest Ever = 30 years. The temperature was from satellites and they have only been doing it since 1979 (and then not that accurately until about 1987 due to changes in the recording mechanism).
But one thing to remember as we (Europe, Asia and North America) shiver under one of the most extreme winters in recent memory is that we live on land, which is only about 30% of the surface of the planet. The Satellites indicated that most of the warming occurred over the oceans (El Nino), so it is easy to believe and understand.
But again, remember, weather is not climate. Cold today does not portend a coming ice age, and warm tomorrow does not indicate global warming.
Assuming for the sake of argument that Al "The sun has no appreciable effect on climate, energy use on planet earth has the potential to affect the delicate balance of celestial harmony" Gore is 100 percent correct in everything he says. How does one fix the problem?
I live in Dallas Texas: Record snow fall this year. Feels like the coldest Winter I've experienced in the 9 years I've lived here. I have no data on that one though. Just sayin.
Never mind science, what about elementary-school mathematics? (primary school for you UK-ians)
I live in the Pacific Northwest of the US. This year we've had a particularly warm winter, with temparatures barely dropping below freezing at all. Therefore, no-one must be getting any snow. Those news reports about snowstorms on the East Coast are just media hype to cast doubt on global warming. (see, I can do it too!)
EDIT: note that this last paragraph was facetious. The only proper way to figure out the average global temperature is to measure the temperature at lots of sites over time and take an average. This includes places where people don't live and that aren't commercially or politically important, because they have temperatures too. (I'm convinced that the reason for all the hubbub about the snow in the US this year was that New York and DC got hit) I haven't done this, but apparently some scientists have, and they've concluded that January was, on average, hotter than usual. Arguments to the contrary are not interesting unless you have your own pile of hard data (a handful of anecdotes don't count).
It is very important that you all keep in mind that liberals put out a memo on Jan 1st. It is no longer called "global warming". For now on it is to be referred to as "Global Climate Change". Any attempt to call it "global warming" will be met with ridicule for now on. Liberals reserve the right to change the term back to "Global Warming" at the beginning of summer. That will be all. Thank you for your compliance and have a glorious day.
Talk about a no-win situation. The scientists who actually collect the global data are all part of a grand conspiracy to enslave you into environmental correctness, but you can't gauge global warming by looking out your window, either. Either way, you're screwed. Just plug your ears and sing something: la la la la la la I can't hear you.
I really love the human adaptability argument, Moosetek.
If we nuked every major city on oceanic coastlines it would be fine, right? People can adapt to circumstances. We just have to accept the radiocative new terrain because it's like Mother Nature, man. And if we can't adapt to Mother Nature then, like, maybe humanity's time has passed, you know?
TL;DR - Denialists shouldn't be allowed to smoke pot ^^
For the nth time (pay attention here kiddies) Global Warming doesn't make the weather in your backyard warmer. It makes the weather in your backyard weirder and more extreme. Record-breaking snowfall counts. So do L12 Hurricanes.
TL;DR - Saying "it snowed 6 inches today and therefore AGW is Fail" shows us nothing but that you might be a redneck with an internet connection
Ruh roh the name calling has started. Someone doesn't agree with you; call them a dumb redneck. It seems liberals get waddy-panties when you question their religious beliefs .
LOL If we nuked every major city on the coast line, we would get rid of enough politicians and liberals to forever forget global warming, and a ton of other bullshit. If some of you were a little older, you would recall the upcoming Ice Age crap that we had in the 70's. The current NASA global warming advocate was touting global cooling back then. When your meteorologist can figure out the weather a week in advance, I'll start to have a little more faith in long term prognostication. Otherwise, I'll follow the money.
That sucks for my area. Not because it is a major coastal city, but because it is between two major coastal cities, San Diego and Los Angeles. While we wouldn't get nuked, we would get hit by fallout. Which is bad, since most people in my area don't vote for the Democrats.
If you nuke cities, that increases global warming drastically. I learned that from a very scientific source: from playing Civilization III a lot.
Warmest January yet, so that means that it has been warmer in January before this warmest point. Where was the Global Warming, or Climate Change before when Januray was warmest before this warmest point?
I thought San Diego and LA had gobbled up all the space between them!
As an indication of how old I am, I can remember actually being able to see stretches of rural areas between the 2 cities at one time. When Oceanside was just a marine base and not a high priced suburb.
Northern Europe is climatized by the Gulfstream. Otherwise, it would have the same weather as Siberia. Melting ice slows down the Gulfstream which casues unstable weather in areas affected by it. So even if the Northern hemisphere saw the warmest January on record, England could see historically colder temps.
I don't think there are any skeptics in the scientific community anymore, but I think the public won't be convinced there's a problem until the ice caps are gone. At the current rate they're dissappearing, it's something the younger generation will have to contend with. Though, it's accelerating so it might be sooner than later.
Los Angeles wishes they had us gobbled up. Fortunately traffic on the 5 freeway is so bad they haven't been able to.

Funny how this works. The records are always listed as "since such and such year" but you shit for brains idiots seem to think we're going through something new just because you weren't personally alive to witness it. Weather happened before the 70's too.
We're having a really nice el nino right now. We're still at the high end of the curve, so this year might even beat 1998. It's got dick to do with a green house effect though.
I for one live in quebec canada. We usually have very good winters here. However in the past few years our winters have been mild. HOWEVER we have not broken any warm weather temperature in winter yet. It's been warmer still in the 1960... so it's nothing new having a warm winter. It's happened before. Is the climate changing... it does not seem like it in my cornoer of the world.
I do not know if it's true that the planet is warming up. I do know that one way or another it's a good idea to keep your planet clean. So I am doing my part. I'm playing it safe.
