Go get it on steam! I'm downloading now as we speak and will report back after playing. Cheers
I played the demo last night, and I have to say that they pretty much removed everything that made the game what it was.
Regenerating units without veterancy. Crappy experimentals. No tier differentiation.
In the demo you get a chance to build an Atlantis and the battleship for UEF. The battleship almost lost to * gunships, and the Atlantis now has no AA (having been replaced by some crappy short range plasma turrets) and appears to have crappy torpedos. And it still doesn't auto repair aircraft on patrol. The factions all having units with a similar function has been removed (no UEF destroyers ;_;).
This is not the Supreme we were looking for. This is Starcraft 2 with different factions. It will likely get demolished by SC2.
This is the second RTS having being published by Squenix (first was Order of War). I think they need to stick to RPGs, because their RTS choices seem quite poor.

When you make a game for the console market it always end up being very DUMBED down. I won't botehr gettignt he demo now.
Are they releasing the xbox version at the same time or later than PC? (Im assuming its not already out).
(Full game)
Not on the maps in the demo, which are tiny. Assuming SupCom2 follows its predesessor and gets some really huge maps, the strategic mode will be handy for overviewing the entire map.
Man, judging by people's opinions, Supcom 2 looks pretty bad. Then again, this is the internet, so one shouldn't take things so seriously.
I hate games that require Steam. I put up with it for the Orange Box since it's Valve, which generally never disappoint, (though I don't wanna play Half-Life 2 because it's so damn creepy. hate the zombie section)
What a bummer. Stardock is going to blow Gas Powered Games out of the water with Elemental.
Does anyone know why Supcom was made Steam exclusive? I'm getting the feeling GPG wanted to keep Stardock out of SupCom 2 because Demigod didn't turn out so well.
That couldn't be more wrong. Using Steam was Square Enix's decision.
@Jalicos, earlier in the thread- yes, you can actually buy stuff off Steam. It's just that Steam makes it suck for a lot. There are really only 2 games I'd buy on Steam- Portal, and Osmos. Osmos is kind of an ambient/casual game that has surprising depth and interest. Plus, who doesn't like little sentient bubble-things that absorb each other.
As for SupCom/FA/SupCom 2- I'd totally love to get the 1st+FA, but not SupCom 2. Portal I could totally put up with on Steam, seeing as it will require Steam no matter what and is a Valve product (so duh it has Steam), and Osmos which I can't find anywhere else (if I find it on the dev site for that game I'd totally buy it off the dev site). But SupCom 2? No way.
On a side note- Does anyone else notice that Steam seems to have a wider selection, but generally it's in action/adventure, RPG, and MMO type games, while Impulse sweeps Steam's strategy selections? It also kinda seems that Impulse does have a larger number of games (then again, I'm probably wrong considering I don't browse Steam like I browse Impulse).
EDIT: That said, I'd probably try the SupCom 2 demo, if only for trying it. I'd actually probably enjoy the 1st better, and I believe the demo for the 1st is on Impulse.
How do you know?
Maybe dumbing it down for the Xbox 360 was also their idea.
because CT said so.
Debug Mode is available (i.e spawn all units in FULL game)GPG deleted the thread from their forum, but not from SE forums... Sure they are awesome, but they don't seem to handle well censorship
The best thing about SupCom 2 is that the UI doesn't take up a third of the screen. That factor alone was enough to keep me from playing SupCom 1 for very long. So for someone that has not really played the first game in full, this second game is fantastic. No, I don't feel like the game is breaking any new ground in the genre, but I had heaps of fun playing the demo. I'm definitely getting a copy for myself--and because the gameplay is familiar and intuitive, my wife will be playing the game with me too.
Damn alot of hate right here. i understand why alot of you are probably dissapointed with the demo because you've all played SC1 to the end and played skirmishes on huge maps..But you forget that most of you all probably have amazing PC's that were just barely capable of playing SC1. What about the rest?
Dont get me wrong im not here to defend Sc2 or GPG or LOLnix, im just looking from outside the box. Most people who bought Sc1 back in days probably couldnt even play the game because it would cripple there PC's after a 1 hour ingame, Imagine for 1 second if that was you? Imagine you was playing Sc1, with its massive wars and awesomeness and 1 hour in, your PC gives up and crashes the game? Wouldnt you be quite pissed? I sure would be. Now think about Sc2 its been dumbed down yes! why? So thousands of other players out there who never got past the 2nd campaign because there PC's simply couldnt handle Sc1 and its PC crippling power.
You guys are slating Sc2, but most of you dont realise how fortunate you were to play Sc1 without the game breaking your PC in two. Let the masses have there fun with Sc2.
I'll be buying Sc2, not because i think the voice acting is fantastic or because the campaign is good..cos i generally dont, but if it uses less RAM or graphics power then im happy. One word Alone makes this game worth buying-REPLAYABILITY
(Many Hours of my life will dissapear i know...tis sad)
360 release March 16.
PC release March 2.
I did not say it was a bad game at the core. But the campaign/story does seem to suck and having to dumb down the game to make it work on older systems is not a good excuse. They could have optimised the engine instead. Just look at Sins of a Solar Empire(ironclad/stardock) or AI War: Fleet Command(indie), which have unit counts of at least a similar scale if not even more than Supcom1. Yet have even lower requiered system specs than supcom2 while being relative low budget titles.
Both gpg games i own (supcom1 gold and demigod) had sever technical issues and this does not make gpg look any better.
Like many here, I was also upset by Steam exclusivity. No longer. I won't be getting it.
Maybe we'll see a resurgence of the FA community as people are reminded how awesome that game is.
Having played TA and Sup Com, I had been very excited about Sup Com 2. However after playing the demo, they have changed everything that made the other games great.
First things first, they have ruined the way the economy worked. Now replacing building lots of energy and mass production you will just build a bunch of stupid research facilities to increase the speed in which you can "tech". Also changing that you have to have resources before building further makes the game just like any other crappy RTS out there.
Units: Now there are less than 15 units (air, land, and navl) combined to choose from, outside of experimental, once again this has destroyed what made the previous games great with diversity of units. Not too mention the fact that there is no mention of end game artillery or nukes. Removing both of those again destroys the franchise.
Graphics: They look terrible, the maps are clunky at best. The best analogy for water was that it looks like a bunch of units skating around on ice. Everything looked cartoony if I wanted that I would play starcraft.
Gameplay: Eng not being able to help build, takes for ever to make units, and only have 3 air units to choose from just sucks. As far as the storyline goes, I could care less cause I only use it to learn the game initially, because I would rather play online.
I'm totally disapointed. At this point I'm hoping that they will patch or have an expansion that will do what TA:CC did for TA. The only other hope is that the demo is just lacking the end game units I'm looking for.
One last thought from reading these posts, basically if you like Supreme Commander 1 you were capable of micromanaging the resources and techs and you wont like Sup Comm 2. On the contrary if sup com 1 was too "complicated" for you, then you will probably like Sup Comm 2's dumbed down economy, units, and overall gameplay.
Another thing that upsets me is that if SupCom 2 sells well, they will think they made the right decision and proceed to dumb it down even further for the next release.
If SupCom 2 doesn't sell well, the franchise will simply be dead.
It's a lose-lose scenario for SupCom 1 fans.
I didn't play much of SupCom 1 and didn't really like what little I did. That being said, SupCom 2 is completely unimpressive in almost all ways. So while I agree that it's been dumbed down, I think the more salient point is that at least from the demo it's simply a clunky, bad game. Leave room for those of us that appreciated the complexity of the first game, but didn't enjoy it who can still recognize the sequel as probably a victim of console porting and bad design.
By the way, is bashing Steam the new pastime around here or something? Is it really so wrong to support Stardock, use and buy from Impulse and still love Valve's Steam? Haven't seen such blind hatred outside of home team sports and the Intel vs. AMD or Nvidia vs. ATI fanboys.
Frankly, it's a little sad to see these posts that seem far more interested in standing up and proving their loyalty than actually discussing the SupCom 2 demo and their thoughts on it. 'Ooo, ooo! Approve of me, I won't buy things off Steam either! Am I cool now?'
Well, my main reason for not buying off Steam is that their selection doesn't appeal to me, their service has to be running while playing their games, and that Impulse is overall a more polished and better service IMO. Sure, I like some things about Steam better, but I like Impulse more than Steam because it seems to offer better service and also has a selection that appeals to me more.
The other reason I really wouldn't buy off Steam for the most part is that the few games I do think I'd like that are on Steam aren't really worth it to me or that I can get it off Impulse.
I don't think that I'd like the SupCom2 demo, and it sounds like it isn't a good game. I'm willing to try the demo for myself to see, as I've surprised myself before. I did actually somewhat enjoy the DoW2 demo, but it really wasn't what I wanted in a Warhammer 40,000 video game. I much prefer DoW, if not for the simple fact of greater factional diversity and the non-linear campaigns of the Dark Crusade&Soulstorm expansions. The much greater SP focus of DoW1 also appeals more to me than the MP-focusing of DoW2.
As for why many people don't like Steam- it's an intrusive service that is very annoying at the best of times. The fact that the service NEEDS to be running in the background EVERY SINGLE TIME you play a game you bought on Steam (or a game that uses Steamworks), is just plain intrusive and a complete nuisance. Impulse doesn't even need to be on your machine to play their games; you can use it to install/patch and then get rid of it.
Ill buy things of steam. See now Im different and alternative.
Some well-worded opinions there Whiskey. That's to be commended. Excuse my post's combative nature, but it really did seem like a number of users in this thread thought simple one-liners about how much Steam sucked was relevant or useful.
I was referring to the fact that Steam's DRM fits into the "rental-only" category. At any moment, Valve can shut down the Steam service or arbitrarily ban my account and I would no longer be able to use my retail copy of Orange Box. I'm not willing to put any more money into a system where I have no ownership rights.
@Splitshadow: I'd like to hear your thoughts on SupCom1, were you to play it now that you've tried the SupCom2 demo.
I only started playing SupCom1 a few months ago, and my slightly-upgraded 5-year-old computer couldn't run it adequately. A friend bought me an old dual-core chip on ebay, and now the game works fine even with 6 players. Still looks impressive, too.
But it's not the graphics we're concerned about here. In fact, I like the new graphics. What most of us don't seem to like is the fact that they gutted an interesting and unique resource system and replaced it with Generic_Starcraftian_Economy_2010.sux
Actually even if you're unbiased against or for the predecessor of the game, you'll still have some level of biased opinions based on your own personal preferences.
Those who tend to enjoy Supreme Commander in the first place dislike micromanagement and enjoy using the strategy zoom, They prefer commanding large armies of units across multiple fronts on the theater of war simultaneously. Your own preferences seem to lie with micromanagement of units. Starcraft's mechanics would be more suitable for your tastes.
Incidentally, you can recall a unit in low health, but keep in mind that these units represent individual vehicles, ships, and robots. Coupled with Supreme Commander's more realistic simulation of their movement, they all have acceleration, turn rates and deceleration, some slower than others. You have to take those into account when plotting a retreat course. In contrast, a lot of units in Starcraft can turn almost instantaneously on a dime and behaves almost inertialess. Those traits are what will allow them to respond faster to your micromanagement efforts.
