I couldn’t help to poke a little fun at the people who are always claiming that PC gaming is dying.
Elemental, PC only.
Starcraft 2, PC only.
Civilization 5, likely PC only.
WoW: Cataclysm, PC only.
That’s just a quick sampling of course. But a pretty good year to be a PC gamer.
Wow... wow... that's not cool.
So if I wait a year or two, they'll release it as a "super duper gold" version or something, and have all three packaged as one?
I have heard and read about OnLive, and so far it doesn't work and it doesn't seem it will work in the near future as lag kills it (and graphic quality is crappy), so less theorycraft please.
Edit: and good luck to OnLive trying to convince Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo about someone making money streaming their games and cutting their sales, that's not going to happen.
Probably 2 or 3 years right? I mean they're not all planned to be released at the same time. So you'll probably get something like 1, then 2, then 1+2 together with some sort of extra, then 3, then the 3 together. Oh and then DLC because no publisher can live without DLC so maybe its something like this.
1. Part 1 box
2 DLC
3. Part 1 w/DLC box silver ed
4 Part 2 box
5 Part 2 DLC
6 Part 1 w/ DLC and Part 2 box gold
7 Part 1 w/DLC and Part 2 w/ DLC Box platinum
8. Part 3 box
9. Part 3 DLC
10. Part 1 w/DLC and Part 2 w/DLC and part 3 titanium
11. Part 1-3 all DLC ultimate collection
Heh, I am not sure they are going to through in DLC or not but yeah I can see them stretching out releases for a few years before you get to catch them all... pokemon!
DLC, for an RTS? Since when has an RTS ever had DLC released for it?
These days it seems EVERY game has DLC. They can do extra missions or multi-player maps. As long as you can download it and pay something for it, it's dlc.
Not that I mind at least having an option for it. And some games' DLC has been great!
I suppose they might be able to sell mini-campaigns, but it would be utterly impossible for them to make money selling maps. Blizzard is releasing the most kickass map editor ever created for an RTS.
Too much NASCAR Sim huh? Maybe you could mod all the tracks and only turn right. My wheel and pedals are in the closet for the time being...no DA, I won't sell em for 8 bucks.
if you dont understand the nature of the conversation i suggest you mind your own business. we weren't talking about having "fun", we were talking about the merits of the control schemes and i was correcting his errors.
I've found that while doming a console cuts down on dust and pet hair accumulation, it also tends to cause overheating issues. Perhaps removing sections of the dome and replacing them with washable air filters would work better, but I haven't had time to try it out yet.
(Really? Four pages and no one mentioned it? You guys are slacking.)
The PC market isn't going to die in my opinion, but it's not going to ever be as popular as the console market unless something as big as Modern Warfare 2 is PC-exclusive. Consoles are good for lots of things mainly because of it's pricing, but the PC still holds dominant over Strategy games, which I think will be the primary use of them in gaming (besides WoW of course). And who can forget all those little internet flash games every teenager bored in school with a computer gets on? Look at omgpop, they only have a handful of flash games yet they got Atari backing a game that's coming out soon!
The PC market isn't dead yet...
What errors? That he disagrees with your opinion over what the best control scheme is? What is fun is ultimately what is most important in a game. If you're going to claim to talk about the merits of different control schemes, you can't leave out fun. Winning doesn't matter if you're not having fun doing it.
No PC does have the superior control scheme - fact.
If you find the inferior one more fun then great! I don't care. But that dosn't change the fact the PC has more features in general.
^^
...and porn.
LoL. I think I was playing Nascar SimRacing when it died, but i'm really more of a road course and rally guy. Ovals are to boring after a few laps .I do still have wheel/pedals for my dreamcast, and mouse/keyboard for it. Take that crappy dreamcast controller. heh
I'd think of it everytime I saw the topic, but forget when I went to comment. I really wish they would make consoles where you could stack then like the rest of your audio/video equipment. Used to hate having to rearrange half my entertainment center for them. Good thing after Xbox/Gamcube I swore I'd never buy another console. And I've stuck with it so far.
man i suck with quoting, and i cant be bothered to type it all again. let's just say that anyone that thinks the controller is equal to the mouse for FPS is wrong. that's not an opinion, its fact. its as much a fact as saying an F1 car is faster than your mum's hatchback.
my mum's hatchbacks is an F1...
I just wanted to let the elemental devs know that I've already gotten at least six of my old Might and Magic lan players to commit to buying or, in this economy where they don't get jobs, getting as a present from their parents ELWARMAG simply by showing them the dev journals in about five minutes. There have to be gamers out there that just don't know about this game but have wanted to play it since before it was conceived. It all comes down, IMO, to user created content and listening to feedback.
Now which platform can offer more of that?
Consoles may ironically doom themselves as their hardware becomes more and more advanced. Take the PS3 at launch; $600. Then you need a second controller, a memory card, and some games if you want it to actually do anything beyond play movies. A decent gaming PC, which can do many functions before you even install games on it, can be built for around the same price. Yes the prices on current gen consoles have come down, but what about next gen? You could very easily be looking at a day where a new console costs just as much as building a gaming PC. The console makers will have to throw more and more money at devs to keep games exclusive, as this is the only trump card they have over other platforms.
The next generation of consoles are very likely going to need to do more than play games if they want to remain competitive with PCs.
They arealdy do way more than play games. And sony and MS are clearly trying to diversify into whatever they can that dosn't compete with the games market.
I don't know in your country, but PS2 costed that when it came out in mine, and it sold like pancakes...
Not only that, but in terms of Hardware, they sell at loss, except the Wii which is the only one that is actually just a gaming console. So even with high prices consumers get a good deal on the hardware and are forced to pay higher for software to make up that differnce. These days I've seen PC prices trying to get up there with the consoles although, I don't know about you, but my build was not deeply discounted in order to sell the parts to me so I could fork out more money than necessary for accessories and games later. I tytpically don't pay MSRP on any electronics, but it does agitate me a bit when I see PC prices get up their with consoles when we don't have Sony or MS or even Nintendo grabbing a piece to make up for hardware costs and network availability.
Meh,
Lists are great I guess, but I wouldn't put GC2 in the top 100 either. The game was ridiculously easy as the AI was uttely incompetent at both tactical and strategic fleet manuvering.
The open space design doomed it.
Of course that's just an opinion. GC2 did innovate a little bit, but it didn't differentiate itself so far from the usual crop of space 4x games to make a huge impression on me. Other than that I was really dissapointed that it wasn't more challenging and so I actually deleted it from the HD after a couple months.
I have high hopes for Elemental as well, but there are bound to be concerns as well. I'm not in the beta, because I don't have the time I'd like to have, but from reading the journal entries I'm a bit frightened that perhaps the design goals have become too grand, and no matter how long it is kept in for polishing, it will never mange to fully integrate all the parts it needs to. Of course I have GC2 as my measureing stick, and I feel GC2 failed there, so perhaps I am more down on SDs development model than I should be from one data point.
*shrug* I wish the project the best, and I'll likely purchase it anyway because I appreciate what Brad and SD are trying to do with their business model, I just fear that their games ultimately don't get it quite right for me.
To each their own.
Could have sworn zerg was part 2, but I haven't been to the Starcraft site in months.
Shadow Tongue,
What games can you think of that had a better AI developement than galciv 2?
(friendly question because you make a good point, at least about TA)
The problem wasn't the AI generally, it was this specific weakness of the AI which allowed (me at least) one to completely ignore building large fleets because you could feint (or mostly ignore) the AI ships too easilly.
The problem was the open movement system, a design decision which was fine for space stations and random goodies, but handicapped the AIs ability to cope tactically.
The AI could build, colonize, research... all that was fine. Diplomacy could be a bit wonky I guess, but nothing too extreme.
If you want a better game, then I'd say any space 4x from the last few years was ultimately 'better'. Even MoO3 winds up better in my estimation, though you definately need to play it with all the user mods and patches and whatnot. Sword of the Stars was probably the best, but it had much more of a tactical combat focus than anything else so it's not quite apples to apples for some people.
Anyway, I know alot of people really liked GC2. I was one of them initially, but ultimately had to give up on it.
GC2 is getting up there in age though. I mean maybe I am asking a lot from developers, though I don't think so, but I expect newer games to advance to the point where old games start showing their age compared against them. I don't think it's would be an insult to GC2 in anyway to say that games that been released since are better in xyz area and to hope that Elemental exceeds it on several levels. Multiplayer will be important for me for Elemental for early adaption, for example, so for that aspect I have to look at games like Civ IV for comparison but I would expect it to go beyond what out there already.
