I couldn’t help to poke a little fun at the people who are always claiming that PC gaming is dying.
Elemental, PC only.
Starcraft 2, PC only.
Civilization 5, likely PC only.
WoW: Cataclysm, PC only.
That’s just a quick sampling of course. But a pretty good year to be a PC gamer.
ive been a pc gamer for 2 decades now. the only thing that draws me to consoles is price. in some cases i can argue that the community doesn't hack as much, but in playing Modern Warfare 2 on XBox, i know thats not true.
As soon as a hack is discovered it is exploited to the point that game becomes "unfun". of course the happens in the pc world too.
Neither is doomed, I would say. They are merely evolving into two types of gaming. Consoles have awesome CoOp potential for first/3rd person shooters, where you are in the same room and dont have to deal with all the jerks that play l4d2 on PC. The PC is really the only option for strategy games like you mentioned. So I think its fair to say that they simply appeal to different types of gamers and different types of games. I have to admit though we the PC are much more hardcore and have better stories and ideas in Our games, elemental.
It's kind of a stretch including elemental in the company of those games.
PC games are always going to be there though. The PC is infinitely more flexible and free. It's much hard to experiment or try new things on a console because of the bureaucracy, costs and politics involved.
You some kind of troll?
Elemental not in the same company as Civilization 5? What planet you been living on?
I'm just saying the other games listed are part of hallowed franchises and the companies themselves are known for putting out the best of the best games for a long time now.
Stardock hasn't really cracked the top 100 of the best games in the past few years, let alone longer than that.
Elemental could be an amazing game, but we'll see won't we?
OK. I'll bite. Sins of a Solar Empire and Galactic Civilizations II aren't in the top 100 best games of that past few years?
I'd say for a first title, Sins was a great attempt. But it's a flawed game and Stardock didn't really develop it, did they?
And as for Galactic Civilizations II, definitely not.
lol.

92 metacritic.

Two spots in the top 100.
Like the other guy asked, are you trolling?
Yeah its funny how perceptions can alter reality like that.
Actually this a is a great place to continue my rant about hype and good games.
I can remember the hype about certain games better than I can remember the game itself, this plays into the feeling that the game was "massive" and succsesful and therefor REALLY GOOD. But thats false. There are plenty of unsuccsesful good games, they don't have the graphics or the marketing or maybe they are a little rough around the edges for "cool" gaming sites to take seriously. Either way quality is judged by many to be a linear equation to sales (i.e. succsess). I don't do that. Most people I consider intelligent don't do that. Quality is not mutually exclusive with succsess but often results in it.
So going back to this, you totaly can put titles like GalCivII, Mount & Blade or Arma 2 along side the mega sellers in terms of quality. (Im using released stuff because I know its quality.)
And if your talking about sales, I need to go get my suit - I didn't realise we were in a business meeting.
Guys, I'm not trolling, I'm just not a rabid fan boy.
I mean, do you really think galactic civilizations was better than: Deus Ex, Fallout 1 and 2, Planescape: Torment, Diablo II, etc, etc.
Your "reality" is obviously seriously flawed in this case.
Im not a fan boy either but I dont blame him for putting Elemental up with any list of games. If I worked on a game, it be the best thing since Pong in my opinion. To each their own, no?
Wow you just picked 5 of the best games in all of human history. Because a game can't be good unless it beats the aboslute best that isn't even in its catagory! "Yeah you silly modern day artists! Unless you can beat all those 'greats' from hundreds of years ago you SUCK!!! LOL! N00BS!"
Good one.
Of course all those games you mentioned SUCK HARD compared to UFO Enemy Unknown.
It DID beat those games on the list that was posted, hence my rebuttal.
According to Metacritic GalCiv II is in the top 100 games.
Are they fanboys too?
And i would give a resounding Yes!! to three out of the five. Why? Because it is my right ot have my own opinion. That's all these "this game is better then that one" arguments are about anyways.
Everyone has thier own opinion right? It dosn't seem you think it did. I wouldn't compare them, an arbitarily ordered list - it dosn't mean anything but "most people thought these games were good".
I know its quality because I've played it. Theres quite a few games on metacritic with scores of say 70 which I think easily beat all those games you posted but thats because I LOVE that kind of game more than a isometric RPG... Not really useful data.
It DOES however belong next to them. Yes.
Actually, the edit button rarely works. Most of the time I get an authentication error.
The real one?
I would be amazed if elemental comes close to achieving the sales level of a civilization game, or having the same awareness or recognition levels at the moment as the civilization series.
It might be a similar type of game, it might gain a better critical reception(+be a better game), but only the most ardent fan would expect it to sell as much as a civilization game/be as popular as one. Not to say it hasn't got a chance, but the odds are certainly against it.
If I remember correctly, Sins of a Solar Empire was one of the 10 best selling PC titles of 2008.
If you think of the PC games coming out this year total, all of them, are you saying you couldn't imagine Elemental being one of the 10 best selling PC games of the year?
I'm trying to think of all the big PC games coming out in 2010. Starcraft 2, Bioshock 2, Civilization 5, C&C 4, um... So yea, I would say that Elemental is right up there.
My interest in this topic is really piqued now.
So other than the Civilization series, what other turn based strategy games would you consider as good or better than the Galactic Civilizations series?
Getting back on topic, I believe part of the pc is dying perspective comes from the open nature of the pc. Consoles are more controled, there is someone managing the system trying to make sure there is a decent number of releases each year (whether they are successful or not). The pc doesn't have this which helps contribute to more boom and bust years. When releases are a little thin, the pc is dying. When there are a ton, well, just give it a few more years...
I would also contend the pc (even with the range of weak to strong hardware) has the largest install base.
Editing for less confusion:
WoW Cata will sell huge, so will Starcraft 2, DRM Up your ASSassins Credd 2 and Splinter Cell convition will sell pretty well on PC too (unless DRM bites into sales).
But in terms of quality for me its Arma2 Operation Arrowhead then Cataclysm then the good stratergy games (not Starcraft 2).
