Just to specify, in case there's been confusion, you're going to be using this tactic if you're 2km or so from a patrol that's already been engaged. They'll be able to tell you where the enemy is and other necessary details so that you can figure out the angle. We're not ninja enough to just spray rounds in the air and kill stuff, though we do have X-Ray Vision.

1. Too much detail? I actually had to record my dreams for Psychology class a while back, so I got into the habit of writing down dreams if I could remember them. I will admit, however, this dream started as a daydream, during one of Hannah's depressed rants to me about how she wanted to run away...
2. Why thank you good sir. I've had an ambition to be a writer for a while, but anything beyond the above would be fiction from my conscious mind, not my subconscious, so imo; it wouldn't be as good.
3. I went back and added detail later once I had slept some more and re-read my dream description, mostly I gave an introduction, more elaborate description of the characters, and transitions. But again, thx for the compliments, the damn thing took me 1/2 an hour to type.
4. Liz, Mish and Hannah? No, just Hannah tbh, the other characters are strangers. I am the man in black, too. The storyline, based on the location and my appearance in the dream, takes place 4-5 years from now.
5. Meh, it was a dream based off of the thought of me having to go rescue Hannah from the life of a New York street whore, nothing more. I do beleive in the concept of Fruedism, tho.
I just posted the story to have a conversation, not to ask for help. So much for that, apparently.

Well, usually they hide inside of buildings, like abandoned houses, or half-wrecked houses, etc. So there's your vertical cover. In that case, a grenade, or an armed missile might do the trick. And considering how things are in countries like Irak, the enemy will most likely take cover in some kind of building, for the most part.
But yeah, in the cases where they have taken cover behind a barricade, or a vehicle, or any other horizontal-cover object, then your GPMG volley might work, except for the fact that they can get out of cover, as soon as they see those bullets raining on them. If you hit them before they have a chance to retreat and re-position themselves, then thats fine.
Now, you are going to say, that even if you dont hit them, you have managed to get them out of position/cover, so that would be a fair point. Still, you cant refuse that you spend a lot of bullets to do this. You arent gonna shoot a volley of bullets and they are all gonna drop at the same area, you know. The first burst is gonna miss the target for sure.
So my point was, that there are only a few specific situations, where this volley "trick" is worth the bullets. Most times, there are other, better ways to take out an enemy or push them back.
Yes, that is true. But at long range, where an AK or an MG just cant cut it, a sniper rifle will most likely be a win for you, especially considering that your GPMG volley isnt exactly a sure kill, at this range (3 km)
And if the enemy is cowering behind a barricade of some sort, and you dont have line of sight, then just wait until they come out. They cant stay there forever you know. And if they ARE trying to stay behind a wall or something forever, then your allies can just get near, with you covering their asses of course, and flash them out with a grenade.
So yes, the sniper rifle is still a better choice than the "spray and pray" burst of the GPMG
The GPMG can provide excellent suppression fire at this range, but nothing better than that, in most cases.

Even so, you'll have to be even more precise, and calculate more accurately, in order to avoid hitting allied troops. You dont want to hit a fellow soldier, do you?
But even then, (like I already said) there are better ways of taking out an enemy than this tactic. And X-Ray vision wont help you aim more accurately, it will just tell you where the enemy is, thats all.

@Morph- the whole point was that they do, nine times out of ten, land the rounds on the point where they've been told to shoot, because people are there to tell them all the details about wind etc. That's why it's known for that ability while other MGs aren't, and why it (which is pretty old if I remember correctly) is still in service with the British Army. Also keep in mind that British Forces are no longer in Iraq, but are in Afghanistan, where there is a lot less vertical cover. And if you're going for a fight in a village, you don't pack GPMGs.
But as you said, it's not the primary method of eliminating an enemy, but it is pretty damn useful. All about versatility. Average at everything, amazing at nothing. If you wanted a pinpoint strike on a Taliban position, the most effective thing is artillery (which you shouldn't be using in a place like Afghanistan, because it's vulnerable, slow, and would have to be shadowing your patrols to be any use) or an airstrike (which is easier to protect, faster, and overall the better of the two options), but they would take more time than a nearby GPMG lending a hand.
But as I said, you will have your fill of sniper rifles soon.
Artillery/airstrike.....I think you went a little too far with this You cant possibly compare artillery or airstrikes to any kind of firearm.
I mentioned Iraq purely as an example. You went all practical and stuff, mentioning Afghanistan, what works in that country and what not. I thought we were speaking more in general. Also, if the men who are operating the GPMG are pretty damn awesome with it, (you said 9 out of 10, right?), then thats good for you British people. But keep in mind, that I didnt take individual skill with that weapon into account.
I still stand for what I said, though. Sniper rifles > GPMG volley shots.

You have asked me, and I have answered this already before, but I can go at it again:
The Greek military uses the well-known (to us Greeks at least) G3A3, made originally by Heckler and Koch, and originating/being related to the STG45, the german automatic rifle.
It was originally designed and manufactured by the German firm, but later when they started selling to us, and the war was over, Greece started to manufacture these weapons ourselves. So they are made in Greece now, but are German at their core.
The G3 uses standard 7.62x51 NATO rounds and features 3 settings for its rate of fire: Fully automatic, 3-round bursts, and semi-automatic.
It has a maximum effective range of about 400 meters, with the iron sight being adjustable to the range you wish to fire.
We use the G3A3 and G3A4 versions of the weapon, that have different stocks.
I think it went into production around ~1965 or so, although maybe I might be a little off by 1 or 2 years
Thats pretty much all I know about the G3, you can look it up on google for more info. For the record, half the people in the Greek army dont even know the effective range and ammo of the weapon they use, so yeah.....thats us Greeks. We suck.
Moving on, we also use the Heckler & Koch HK11A1:

I dont know much about it, and I have never used it, but it uses the same 7.62x51 NATO rounds as the G3, and is classified as an automatic rifle, although its close relative and predecessor, the HK21A1, is a General Purpose Machine Gun.
The difference between the HK11A1 and the HK21A1 is the the first uses a magazine feed, while the second uses a belt-round feed, making it more suitable for suppressing fire, and a more MG-like weapon. I guess the HK11A1 is more versatile, and has a plus in mobility and availability, considering that the magazine clips are exactly the same as the G3, which leads me to believe that this is why Greece adopted it as its GPMG (although it isnt one). Are you out of ammo? Just borrow a mag. clip from your fellow dead soldier, he wont be using it anymore, I can tell you that! (J/K)
The HK11A1 also features a metal handle, for more convenient carrying. It has a bipod on the front, as you can see from the pic above, and has a maximum effective range of....hmm....1.1 km (??) Not exactly sure about that, though. It could be 1 or 1.2 km.
Our Special Forces use the wide-known M16, (the A1 and A2 variants). I dont think you want me to say much about that weapon, you should already be familiar with it, considering how popular it is.

Thats about it. Some ranked officers and prestigious individuals use a few different weapons, or different variations of 1 of the above, but mostly (and officially), thats about all we use, regarding automatic weapons.

I'm liking the officers get special kit idea. Keeping the tradition of the Officer's Revolver, or the Officer's Rifle, you know, in the 1800s and earlier. MOD would never let us get away with that.
I have to say, my favourite weapons developers/manufacturers have to be Heckler and Koch, Kalashnikov, and the Belgians. Not sure what the company I have in mind there is, but hey.
The Germans had that tradition as well. Remember the famous Luger? Some people were trying really hard to kill a German officer, just to get that. It was almost considered an honor.
