Ok, I know it's a valve game and there are steam forums, but I'm sure impulse posters will be more knowledgable. When I start playing L4D it runs smooth and fast, by the second or third part of a campain, it starts stuttering and slowing down. Why might this be happening? Anything I can do about it? L4D is the only game this happens to me.
Thanks

Your computer gets tired. Try going to the menu screen and leaving it for thirty minutes, then come back and play it. It should be rested by then.
I enjoy the personified response but thats not gonna work when playing online and only 2/5's through a campaign I want to complete. Is there a technical reason for this? Memory leak? Anything?
It could be a problem with the memory used.
If you are using a 32-bit OS you are generally limited to 2GB of memory space. If your game needs more than that it will use the swapfile, which slows things down.
Ok, is it slow when you start afresh and load from level 3? This might test Moosetek13's idea.
It could be that those parts of the campaign are more graphically intense, and this is not always noticable to the player. Do you have a kick ass machine? Does it help to turn down the graphics?
Beyond that I would say post on the L4D forums, see if others have the same issue.
Good luck
You have any problems with other games? I mean you said 3rd or 4th map which makes me think you have been playing for awhile. Maybe it's a heat issue that needs to be fixed, for instance your GPU overheating after a bit.
Oops I should have read your post better. You said its only L4D, so the other games you're not having an issue with, are they graphically intense aka taxing your GPU much?
I'm using Vista 32-bit. 2 GB RAM.
Sager IF90, 8600 mGT, 2GB RAM, dual core 2Ghz. Not kick ass...anymore. It does help when I turn the graphics down, although I'd like to find out if I dont have to.
TW: Medieval 2, Supreme Commander, and Demigod are probably the most taxing games, but they play consistant (well or poorly)
It does sound like memory or perhaps heat issues, common enough with laptops. I have the same issue playing some games like CS, I find it is enough just to elevate the laptop a bit encourage better airflow.
8600 mGT is that part of the faulty chipsets nVidia put out, the ones basically prone to burn out? I know mine is, it's an 8400 and since Dell's response to that mess was to send an BIOS to increase the fan, I don't even try to use it for gaming (wasn't meant to be a gaming rig for me though.)
