Galactic Civilizations II still sells amazingly well. Both at retail and digitally.
As a token of thanks, I was thinking of working on an update in my spare time after I turn in the book manuscript next month. Are there any small updates you guys would like to see in there? Mind you, it would be just be me. On a couple of cold weekends doing this.
There's a Load button on the race customisation screen.
Firstly, I am a big fan of GCII and have been since I first came across it many years ago. My sincere appreciation to all who worked on it. As I haven't read all the comments I appologise in advance if this one has already been raised:- Could Starbases please not let enemy fleets sail merrily past without taking any action?
Could something be done to fix TA Yor? For a race that will eventually take over the universe they are too hard to play at the moment - a horrible economy (meaning horrible everything eventually) in exchange for... well, for nothing important, really.
I understand that it can be done by anybody, a couple of bonus percents here, a couple there, five minutes in the editor and some playtesting, but dev attention will make it feel more legitimate.
In galciv1 when a game is loaded it gives a short summary where the player is (ie technologically falling behind, not in war with any major civ, etc). The journey starts today in galciv2 is poorer.
The planetary defenses should be extended, introducing structures that can provide attack and defense assistance to orbiting forces similar to a military starbase and also more (level of) structures providing defense bonus for the planet.
The higher up economy buildings should be renamed, in galciv1 one per planet applied to all and having twenty stock exchange on a planet is a bit funny. I think the Iconian tree is better.
EDIT: The GNN should be able to use the scroller of the mouse.
More for galciv3 than an update:
Again in galciv1 the actual output depends on the population, in Haegemonia (IG1, IG2) the buildings can be used if the population level is sufficient. In galciv2 if you capture a full factory world it will be up and running even if you have only a few surviving troops or after a virus attack.
Social production should use unused military capacity. And/or the military/social/research slider should be set on planetary level.
The major / minor civilization concept might not be needed. Why are the Iconians "better" than Carinoids?
So no updates after all...
It's been more than eighteen months. It's pretty safe to say, if any updates are coming, it's not going to be as promised.
But there is so many things to fix, this game needs a few bug fixes before its finished.
Fix that memory leaks so i can play biggest galaxy...
Fix AI that is not expanding at all...
Yeah well, the problem with the AI civs not expanding early on is that they get a whole bunch of improvements that kill their starting game, and/or their default AI is risk-averse when it comes to picking planets to colonise.
Modding the starting improvements helps to avoid the early-game meltdown, while switching from the default AI seems to help them take chances on settling colonies in other civ's borders. Note that this doesn't always work out well for them. The Drengin for example, can lose a number of their early colonies due to influence. So probably, the ideal solution would be to tweak how risk-averse those AIs are.
These things aren't hard to do, it just takes time to find the right balance.
The lack of progress report from Stardock suggests that they know exactly what needs doing and just need a good reason to do it, or they haven't looked into it and need a good reason to do that. Whatever is going on with it, you're looking at many more months of waiting for an update.
Other problem is that the game runs very slow. I have everything set to low. When the game begins everything runs fine, but later in the game, when many ships are on the map, and i can see most of the map game start to lag. It is strange for me that this game cant run smooth on Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 2GHz, 4Gb Ram and Geforce 9200 GS 512Ram.
In my last game almost every alien race was not expanding at all, i would ged bored but some mega event took half of my planets, so i had some fun with minor race.
One more bug that need some fix is that icons of fleet or ships vanish and i dont know why.
Well sorry to say, your video card was low-end two years ago (see here). You want to try a smaller galaxy where the map isn't going to get full of ships so fast. Or, see about upgrading your video card, if that's possible.
I always play on smallest galaxy...
This game has very low System Requirements and should run very fast on my laptop. Just using quick test i pass the Recommended requirements, so i dont see a reason for lags that i have. Also game after installaton was set on high details. In other games i just turn off shadows and Anti-aliasing or anizotropic filtering and games run with normal speed around 50/60 FPS. Some games like GTA:SA also have many objects on map and dont lag at all.
Post it in the bug forum then. Flogging a dead topic isn't going to help you out here you know.
Dead topic you say...
This topic need some bumps anyway.
It's in the Dev Journal section so you're bumping it maybe one line?
Woo.
The entire community has read this thread like a dozen times at least and you're putting up a neon sign that says 'Hey everyone, look at this!' without really adding anything new to the discussion except that for some reason it won't run fast on your laptop.
Ok.
I know this is wrong place for that, but like you said this thread is dead anyway.
Only you write something here, where is the rest of the community?
I would like someone from Stardock write something about future updates to Galciv2, or that they don't plan supporting this game anymore. This will end all speculation.
We got update!!!
Version 2.04 ---------------- -Fix for Twilight crashes with some multiple-monitor configurations -Updated offline activation method
This is bad joke...
You know, a nice big game on a couple big monitors would be quite fun. I never played on more than a single 21". It may be time to resurrect this on a twin 24" config.
exactly what I was thinking...
And I am re-installing the game now, for trying/enjoying a larger universe in stereo...
I do not think more patches will come, and I think it is a nice, yet simple, addition. thanks.
Sure.
I can plug my PC to my 42" TV, so this is useless, no need for more screens.
Fix some obvious bugs like this one with spying on a dead race, and many others.
Make some use of morale system, because the whole system just sits there and do nothing, I never lost elections so far, planets are boring this way, whats left is battle but we dont have any tactical battle features so fighting is so boring.
Make some change to military rating, because now AI use general military rating, what i do is spam small ships to get my military rating higher and AI will never attack me, because AI don't chcek how strong my units are. Do simple check of my and AI strongest ship, military rating is not good indicator of strength. Fix broken Korath's spore ships, I can conquer whole galaxy with them, its like playing on cheats, easy mode, simply boring even on higher difficulty levels.
Game needs some balancing, and fixes.
