Hi,
I would advise all of you to have a look at this exciting new space 4x rts game. It is called Distant Words and will be released soon. The concept is very cool and it seems very easy to play. Check out the videos!
The website is: http://www.codeforce.co.nz/
Distant Worlds - Overview
Distant Worlds is a vast, real-time, 4X space strategy game. Explore the galaxy and expand your mighty empire across the stars...
Experience the full depth and detail of large turn-based strategy games, but with the simplicity and ease of real-time, and on the scale of a massively-multiplayer online game.
Vast galaxies are made to order: up to 1400 star systems, with up to 50,000 planets, moons and asteroids. Galaxies are so deep, fun and immersive that you won’t want to finish the game... Build, expand and improve your empire endlessly.
Seamlessly zoom your view from a single ship or planet right out to the entire galaxy – or any level in between. Watch thousands of star ships criss-crossing the galaxy: transporting cargo, mining resources, exploring uncharted regions, colonizing new planets, taming lawless areas.
The galaxy is packed with life and activity. Encounter other empires, independent alien colonies, traders, pirates and space monsters. Explore star systems, asteroid fields, gas clouds, supernovae, galactic storms and black holes. Discover evidence of civilizations long since past, uncovering secrets about the galaxy's troubled history...
Your citizens expand your empire’s economy by themselves: colonies grow in size and culture, freighters transport cargo, mining ships and mining stations exploit resources – without any direction from you.
Your job as the head of government for your empire is to explore, colonize and protect. Providing security and stability allows trade and development to flourish at your colonies. But neglecting your defences will see your empire shrink as it is attacked by marauding pirates and other greedy empires.
Use a full array of tools to help your empire achieve dominance: diplomacy, espionage and the threat and use of military force.
Automate as much or as little of the game as you like, leaving you time to focus on the game aspects that interest you most.
Play the game your way: enjoy a quick, intense game in a crowded galaxy or take your time in an epic game spread across a vast galaxy
It looks really interesting. Thanks for the heads up!
Everything sounds good except for the graphics, which are horrible.. Combine it with the grahpics from Spore and it would definitely be worth looking at.
Eh, graphics aren't that important to me. I still play Fallout 1/2, Dungeon Keeper 2, etc.
Old games don't bother me, it's gameplay that I care about.
"it's gameplay that I care about."
I also prefer gameplay to graphics.
Gameplay is more important then graphics, but graphics are still important. After all, we are a visaully oriented species. regardless though, Distant worlds looks alright. and it seems like a pretty good game.
Graphics are like icing on the cake. Its good to have but gameplay is the all important cake! Good find... I will watch this.
Actually I don't like frosting/icing on my cake, Infact I hate the taste of it. I just like the actual cake itself. I'm weird though.
FROSTING HATER!!
Cake without icing is awful, icing without cake is pretty good though
I don't usually play games with graphics that are worse than say, Age of Mythology or Warcraft III
How about a compromise, Angel Food cake.
Galactic civilizations... check.
Sins of a Solar Empire... check.
Eve Online... check.
Now, what does it do that is new? What is there to get me excited? I'm not saying it's a bad game, but your description has a been-there-done-that feel to it.
On the subject of graphics though, I've been playing AI war over the last couple days, and damn it feels to go get back to good old fashioned game design where gameplay matters.

Okay I checked out the website, I have to admit it has potential. Thanks for the heads up!
After Elemental, this is probably the game I'm most excited about being released this year. I wish it wasn't in real-time (I've always preferred turn-based strategy games), but otherwise Distant Worlds looks like it's going to be a worthy addition to the space 4x genre.
I couldn't agree more regarding gameplay vs. graphics... It's all about the gameplay... I'm still playing games from the 80s.
I think you mean "I'm a visually orientated person." I couldn't give a flying flog for gfx and neither do plenty of people I know. As long as they convey meaning they have served their purpose. Good to see the Kiwi's in the mix...good luck guys.
*Watches the first video* Ok....indie game with lots of content in an impossible UI and bad graphics....The stereotype is true!
*Watches 2nd video*. Ok you can automate everything....so much for control....why play? Just automate everything except one single thing and hope for the best! lol
*Watches 3rd video* zzzzzz.....ZZZZZZZ *GAAAASP* Oh GOD it looks boring....Like (Gal)Civ (II) with good music.
Well this was an easy decision
@Campaigner
I don't think you do justice to this game. It seems that the developers have implemented some innovative elements into this game. I like the fact that there's actually a whole economy going on, while you are managing as a head of state. Also the galaxy is much larger then in common rts/tbs games. The UI seems very easy to use and there is a very extensive galactopedia to help you. Why would it be impossible? You can automate the things you don't like. I wish I could do this at times for galciv2. I don't like building improvements on planets in galciv2. I like to decide on diplomacy and war. I like to decide where to expand my empire to.
I'm a min-maxing type of guy (What's most effective? Lets abuse it!) If I can win by automating everything except one thing then I'm a bit hardpressed as to why I shouldn't do that. And is the A.I governing any good? If it's not, I would feel forced to do everything myself (and that's just NOT gonna happen) and if it can be automated it feels like the game plays itself and I'm spectating like people say about MoO III.
From what I saw, it doesn't look interesting. I realize that my above post is a bit arrogant and maybe provocative but I simply think the game seems really boring. I also don't like Civ and GalCiv.
Your live must be empty and hollow CIV IV is the best game ever made!
Looks very promising. Graphics are not everything, the depth of this game, or what it looks like so far anyway, more than makes up for any lack in high detail graphics.
Is there a date for release, and upon release is this game going to be released on Impulse at all?
Nice effort guys, i'll be looking out for it.
So far there is no news about an Impulse release and it may never happen. I've been researching Matrix games and they are DRM free except for serial key. They do not have unlimited downloads though so you only get a limited time to download the game and archive it. You can pay extra for a 2 year "download insurance"
"CIV IV is the best game ever made!"
I"m playing at the moment. I must stay it is very good. However, I'm not sure if I like it more than galciv2 or Sins. I think there's even more micromanagement involved than in Galciv2. NOt only building improvements of cities, but there's a lot more to think about. I like the way the game is polishd and how diplomacy is taken care of. I only hope that the AI in Distant Words will be as good as in Civ4 and Galciv2.
Civ IV is better with Expansions, so you should make sure you have them.
I have the gold version, but want to start with the original to get to learn the new game concepts before I introduce more elements with the expansions. Any suggestions for interesting mods? What about the galciv2 type of mod in one of the expansions?
BTW I'm currently doing the same with SINs. Although I've already bought the full package (incl diplomacy), I first want to learn to master the original game.
Well I've never played Civ Iv without the expansions so I couldn't even tell you what the expansions add. As for mods I don't know I've only played two single player campaigns and two multiplayer campaigns of Civ IV. And those can take a LOOOONG time to complete on huge maps.
