This surprised me. I just got my disk about a week ago and I am smitten. I have played 10% of this game so far, according to the in-game documentary, and I have spent 24 hours of non-stop enjoyment so far on it.
I am talking about the RPG Dragon Age: Origins.
You should understand that I am not a Bioware fanboy, although I DID really enjoy Baldur's Gate 2. I despised Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale and have not played a Bioware game since. Boy am I glad I changed my mind and listened to the hype.
What is great about this game? The attention to detail, the love. The fact that each face, each character, is really, really different. The way the characters' eyebrows move. The way that EACH spoken line is voiced over in good to excellent quality. The fact that I am spending more time reading and talking than hacking and slashing -- and it is NOT bothering me. The fact that I can, but need not spend all my time on minimaxing, but rather have some sort of emotional feel. It all feels right.
This game has soul like no game since Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2 or Deus Ex 1 has had.
May Elemental cut off a slice of this love, this soul and store it in a shiny place, somewhere down deep, and embody it upon release.
Icewind Dale was Black Isle, not Bioware. Planescape Torment was also Black Isle.
NWN was an amazingly boring game for Bioware... Haven't played the new stuff, but out of the old stuff it's the lone serious dud, and I can barely make myself finish a good rpg.
You played NWN for the community and the modules, not the base game.
It was enjoyable playing with your friends too. They kind of messed that up a but with NWN 2 though.
But I agree. NWN was fun to play with a friend. NWN2 was a clunky, badly optimized POS.
True, and I realize that but thanks for pointing it out. I wouldn't want Bioware to get the blame for something that wasn't their faultm although all my NWN2 game are linked to Bioware forums. I was just saying the the appeal to Neverwinter Nights was not only the modules but the multiplayer so where it might be lacking compared to more robust RPGs, it made up with multiplayer and community addition. NWN2... our group didn't even make it past, well I can't remember where we stopped but it was not enjoyable as a group game at all. We did the entire NWN1 and one expansion as a group in comparison.
I agree completley, it's a very special game. Not really for it's game play, but for the story and how it actaully makes you feel for the characters, and your character. Like you said, Soul and Love
I also love how it doesnt simplify any of the decisions down to good or evil.
Try Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 after Dragon Age
Agree with the soul and love. I played through twice and then ...
Something came over me! It was the Evil One!
The Evil One forced me to get in my car and go out and buy Borderlands! Where I have been immersed ever since!
The evil one, as you put it - is called inteligence.
Don't mistake resiting temptation for the stupidity it is. Just make sure you rob a bank first so you can afford it.
I have yet to play Dragon: Age, but if it's as good as I hear it is from pretty much everywhere, then it is a definite must-buy for me. I skipped it so I could get a PS3 (and many new games) plus pre-ordering Mass Effect 2 Collectors Edition. I'm going to end up buying it at some point hehe.....Bioware already has the 17th highest rated game of all time at the start of the year (Mass Effect 2) and also another of the best RPG's of the decade. Good on them!
