For christmas I got Dawn of War: The Complete Collection (the word booyah springs to mind)
Ive been cracking on with it since and am now working my way through Dark Crusade and giving up on the campaigns to actually learn to play the factions better themselves. I went looking for Forum help and cant seem to find jack shit. Certainly nothing as useful as the GPGnet forums on Supreme Commander or the forum here on Demigod.
Im just wanting to know if there is anywhere worth going to learn which Faction is OP, UP; which faction owns late game, which faction doesnt. Basic strategies, mistakes to avoid etc.
Just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction?
And then you got to paint them, read the rules, buy the core book, buy the Codex on your army..
Then, when you're ready for action, they launch a new edition of the rules, and a new codex for your race, making your good 2000 pts army non-legal, and totally contradictory to what they claim...mostly talking about 3rd ed IG (with the doctrines) vs. 4th Ed IG (where they claim the Imperium gets many diffrent ideology and doctrine from regiment to regiment....but there's no doctrines and the same rules apply to every regiment..the diffrence is what miniature you got)
Another Pound-Sterling grabbing scheme by those jolly ol' British guys down at Game Workshop....
Thats why I never got into Warhammer or D&D or any other tabletop game, they just cost SO much money.
Well, I downloaded the VASSAL engine, which allows to play table top games wihtout all the painting, minis and such...sure beats dragging your army around the stores and tourneys...plusa you cna play online wiht anyone pretty much easely.
I think that's all part of the hobby, lots of ppl love these activities
Im all of those things. Im ranked 630 on the FA rankings and Im all over the forum
And Ive actually stopped playing DOW because I got addicted to FA again
Hahah FA was one of the fewest game actually got me to playing multiplayer for a while up to 1800 point if I remember right. Been a long time since too bad the experiment expansion, mention in passing by chris taylor on GPG chat client, was cancel and the whole THQ not responding on the lastest 'beta' patch. I think THQ is being either lazy or just afraid that they might get a lawsuit over not doing testing and all.
Nah its because they are only like 100 folk still playing
well ironically enough probably more now ><
If Im right I used to see replays with you in them
Yeah I went back as far as the original vanilla supcom beta when they had this crazy AI that if give enough factories and energy would go all out experimental each 2 or 3 mins forcing you to use nukes to get the field even out hahah.
BTW my name over at gaspowered is Xavior.
Dont you write lots of the mods and stuff? I was looking to go through and create lots of balance mods for the actual game and for your mods as well ^^
I didn't made any mod as I am not really a big time programmer. *studying Computer Engineer in college* Most of my coding experience are limited to Ada/vhdl, c++ and java. Although I could try reading LUA but then again heh. You might have been thinking of Sorian or any other of the many modders.
On DoW Winter Assault, I seem to be stuck on Mission 4 of the Disorder Campaign. I've won the Order campaigns with both sides. I've won the Disorder Campaign with Chaos. What I cannot seem to do is get past Mission 4 (of 5) with the Orcs.
The 1.51 version starts the Orcs with almost no resources. The closest I've gotten so far has been playing Chaos long enough to kill a bunch of Order units, including the LandRaider, summoning the Bloodthirster and loosing it on the Order forces, and then switching to the Orcs just before losing that option. However, I still got a Mission Failure message a few minutes later.
Must be missing something ....
Maybe I need to stealth on Orc unit and run it to the gate while the Chaos demon is playing.
If you are not controlling the ork from the beginning they will be control by AI same for chaos. I might be wrong as it has been long time since I last play winter assault.
Yes, that is not the case. In fact, one can switch back-and-forth between Chaos and Orcs in that mission all the way up to the point where the side you are playing accomplishes some or all of the victory conditions. One can do the same thing with the Eldar and the Imperial Guard in the Order Campaign on this same mission.
That is, in this mission, one can win it with any one of the four sides. When you win it, you watch the other race on your side perish under the attacks of the two on the other side. Then, once won, you play a last bonus mission using the race you won with against the Necrons.
I have won it with the Imperial Guard, the Eldar, and Chaos. I am stuck on the Orcs.
The only way I see is to ALMOST win with Chaos and do a quick switch to Orcs. Next time, I may tech up the stealth ability along the way and try to sneak an Orc unit up to and through the Psychic Shield as the Chaos forces butcher the IG and Eldar.
There is a neat trick you might want to know about. NOT a cheating one. You know that your ork mek can teleport correct? just walk him up to where the slag *purple dot where you build power plant thingie* then teleport him on the opposite side. You can do the same with jumping/teleport eldar even the builder alone is enough to get the victory. Same for chao with chaos horrors and deep strike where availabe. Sadly imperial doesn't get this easy work around.
I don't seem to start off with that Ork Mek, and I do not have the resources to build one at the start. In 1.51, the Orcs start Mission 4 without even enough to build a builder unit.
If teleport requires research, then the Orks have to research that, as well, also with resources they do not start with. I will have to tinker on this, but I will explore that approach some. Thanx!
I finished the Winter Assault campaign with all sides and I can't remember any particular difficulty with the Orcs. perhaps you're just not good with them? Gorgutz takes the lead and uses his ability when he got his boyz around him. Tankbustas against tanks.
Isn't there any strategic point, crit point or relic close by for you to take?
There are two easy, one fairly easy, and one not so easy points nearby.
I think the patch that went from 1.50 to 1.51 is what did it. On the DoW boards back then, folk were saying "no problem" with Orks in Mission 4. But 1.51 came after those threads and I saw a few "what-the-hell?!" posts after that.
With 1.51, the Orks start with 30 or so resource points and maybe 10 energy points, with no already captured points and one small generator. You do not start with even enough to put bomb chukkas on the two wartrucks you start with. Not even enough points to build one single builder unit. Not enough points to start researching anything.
When you do capture the two close points, you do not have a builder unit to put on listening posts to increase resource rates. If you wait and do build one, now you don't have enough points to build even one listening post. Even if you don't build pistening posts, you still don't have enough to build even one more generator for quite a while.
Meanwhile, the land raider is on its way to the shield opening and the Eldar are moving their base further away and building up forces.
Maybe there is enough time to huddle down and try to build a mek and try the teleport trick. I wonder, though.
I started playing Dark Crusade after being to lazy to be arsed to getting round to playing the disorder campaign ^^
Cant say Ive had any of those problems
Oh and Xavior I think its cause you spend a lot of time in the mod forums that Im thinking you made mods
Hmm you must be thinking of someone else like zavior *yes there is a zavior*. I had very few posts in gpg forum and more in tournment results.
Yeah think it might have been actually
bookmark for self; almost seems like a necro.
EDIT: does anybody happen to know if the AI in vanilla WA builds relic units? There was 1 time where an Eldar ally built an Avatar, but only 1 time.
I would suggest searching the DoW forums for the WA version the Dawn of Skirmish mod. It contains a challenging AI that builds everything in a rather intelligent way, including relic units.
