Looking into 2010, what PC games are you most looking forward to for this next year?
Being a strategy gamer, the biggest mass-market releases of strategy games are probably gonna be Starcraft and Napoleon: Total War. However, I probably won't get either, in protest. No Starcraft for its anti-LAN stance. No Napoleon: Total War for the fact that even now, Empire: Total War still isn't bug-free, and the AI still sucks. I don't want to buy another beta, that will still be a beta 6 months after release. Not too sure about CnC IV yet.
I like Sins of a Solar Empire even more now, with the Diplomacy Expansion coming out in a few months. I can't wait for Stardock's Elemental though. A strategy gamer's dream, with both killer AI AND multiplayer (an oxymoron? No). I've definitely gone indie these days. Mass market games just don't cut it anymore, being composed entirely of "wow" graphics and just 10 hours of mediocre gameplay. Age of Empires got me into the strategy genre, but Galactic Civilizations and SoaSE told me what I really liked.
If you are looking for a game now I reccomend Kings Bounty Armored Princess.
Regarding 2010: I am waiting for Supreme Commander 2 and Elemental. I am also getting more and more dissatisfied with mainstream strategy games. I dropped Empire Total War because of the Steam connection. Even if you buy the box you need Steam. Lovely consept
My most anticipated games of 2010:
1. God of War 3. I'm a huge sucker for them, and there's really no feasible way this game can fail for me.
2. Mass Effect 2. The hype for this game is unbelievable, and it looks like it's going to be even better than the first game, which was ironically called the best Xbox 360 game of all time.
3. Final Fantasy XIII. Since FFX, I've never turned down a FF game.....even though I only ever bought FFX and FFXII. Yeah, I'm a real diehard fan Still, this game is getting enormous praise overseas, and it's hard not to be amazed by a Final Fantasy title these days.
4. The Last Guardian. After playing Shadow of the Colossus, I know Last Guardian will be amazing. Team Ico are true masters of artistic direction and whatever else they apply themselves to, and I can already see from the screenshots that this will be one amazing game.
5. Gran Turismo 5. You can never downplay a GT game, no matter how much of a chronic fanboy you are. Admit it.
Notice that I'm not even mentioning some of the more obvious games that are on millions of people's lists, simply because I'm a far bigger fan of these 5. I've got Empire, so there's no real point in buying Napoleon. I know Starcraft 2 will be brilliant, but I don't honestly want it all that much. Chaos Rising I'm not fussed about anymore (now that I have a PS3), and most other games I'm not worried about either. The Old Republic will be amazing though, as should be Force Unleashed 2 and many other titles that arrive next year.
the 2 aliens games.
supcom 2.
Thief 4!
Being a strategy gamer, the biggest mass-market releases of strategy games are probably gonna be Starcraft and Napoleon: Total War.
Now it's correct.
The pic further down is the answer
However, I probably won't get either, in protest. No Starcraft for its anti-LAN stance. No Napoleon: Total War for the fact that even now, Empire: Total War still isn't bug-free, and the AI still sucks. I don't want to buy another beta, that will still be a beta 6 months after release. Won't StarCraft II work like Company of Heroes in that you can play LAN but you need to be connected to a Battle.Net server? I don't know, Blizzard don't say anything but I can live without LAN. There's always Hamachi
Actually never played a Total War game
C&C IV....it's gonna take a miracle to get me to buy that. The devteam are being laid off after the game ships so C&C IV will most definetly get the worst support of any EA RTS title ever released!
Add to that that EA have milked out the C&C franschise and are killing it off now so that's even less of an incentive for me to get it.
Here are some games I'm waiting for:
#4 Disciples III
#3 Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising
#2 Elemental: War of Magic
And my most anticipated game of 2010 (and it's gonna take the game of the decade to make me shift:)
starcraft 2
Star Trek: Online and Supreme Commander 2 of course
Starcraft 2 this year? Really? That would also mean Diablo 3, right? Asking too much maybe?
The only game I'll probably buy without checking reviews:
World of Warcraft Cataclysm
In the 'how dumbed down for consoles are they?' catagory but looking forward to and hoping they still make good PC games:
Aliens Vs Predator
Thief 4
Aliens Colonial Marines
On my watch and likely to buy list:
Stalker
Metro 2033
Castlevania: Lord of Shadow
Heroes of Newerth
Settlers 7
No way, you've appealed to click fest rush junkies:
CnC 4
Starcraft 2
The only 2010 game that I plan to buy is W40K: Chaos Rising. I'll get this despite the Steam connection. If they come out in 2010 (and don't have overly restrictive DRM), I'll promptly get Hitman 5, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and Arcania: A Gothic Tale.
Due to restrictive DRM (for example, Steam, online activation for single-player mode, limited activations, etc.), I will not be getting once-anticipated games such as Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, and Alien vs. Predator.
Sins:Diplomacy.
Not pinning high hopes on Elemental, but if it turns out it does deliver, that's a bonus. Same with C&C4--RA3 didn't work out, so not relying on C&C4 to shine, either. If it does, great.
Sins of a solar empire 2
Wow, these lists are short. Mine is much longer and I probably forgot about some. Pretty much the order listed is my order of excitment/want. Reviews could change my mind on some though, I rarely buy anything the day it comes out anymore. Top 4 on the list and Starcraft 2 will be exceptions though (Elemental already is as I've preordered it). This is a PC only list as that's all I own.
Elemental
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Alpha Protocol
Mass Effect 2
Age of Decadence
R.U.S.E.
Fallout: New Vegas
Deus Ex 3
Supreme Commander 2
Aliens vs Predator (maybe Aliens Colonial Marines but I haven't heard anything about it lately and thought it was canceled for some reason)
Rage
Half-Life 2: Episode 3 (if it is coming out in 2010)
Dragon Age Origins expansion (forget what it's called)
Bioshock 2
Warhammer: Chaos Rising
Disciples 3
Napolean Total war is a game I would normally be drooling over but I'm getting Total War burnout. Just too many of them coming out to close together. Can't see myself playing this until maybe the end of the year and definitely not excited about it.
Some others which I'm keeping an eye on are the new Gothic, Ego Draconis, Metro 2033, Mount and Blade: Warband and Assassins Creed 2. Don't know much about them so can't get excited. Also looking forward to Thief 4, Diablo 3 and Witcher 2 but I doubt they will be out in 2010.
Ok heres my efing long list.... and probably more...
Mass Effect 2 PC
Half Life 2 Episode 3 PC (Hurry up already!)
Homeworld 3 PC (yes I know but hey... I can hope for it)
Starcraft 2 PC
Dragon Age Origins Expansions PC
Supreme Commander 2 PC
Deus Ex 3 PC (god this better be good!)
Elemental War of Magic PC
Alpha Protocol PC
(Im going to try Star Trek Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic both PC)
Sins Diplomacy PC
More Eve Online goodness this year!
God Of War 3 PS3
Napolean Total War(hope things go smoother this time...)
Diablo 3 PC (but I think thats 2011...makes me a sad panda)
Assassins Creed 2 PC (Impulse needs this NOW!)
Splinter Cell(if impulse gets it PC!)
Thief 4 and Witcher 2!??! heck ya PC!
Aliens vs Predator PC
debating Bioshock 2 PC?
Dust 514 Xbox 360
Heavy Rain I guess since I got a PS3...
Metal Gear Solid: Rising PS3 or 360?
Both the Star Trek and Star Wars games have my interest, as does Elemental.
Gran Turismo 5 will get a look in too.
I'm not even sure if this will make a 2010 release but Diablo III is one i look forward too, but the game i most eagerly await is of course Starcraft 2.
For me, it has to be Elemental. TBS + RPG? Yes, please!
I don't think I've played any PC versions of this genre, but it sounds good so far (it has to be better than Fire Emblem right?).
I'm also skipping Total War and probably Starcraft 2. Anything else except expansions will depend on how well my new computer works.
I'm taking a wait and see attitude with most these days, but the short list...
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat
Sins: Diplomacy
Keeping an eye on Elemental as well.
In the Wishful thinking department...
Some kind of announcement about the future of the GalCiv franchise by years end.
My list:
What I want for sure:
Assassin's Creed IISupreme Commander 2Elemental: War of Magic
What I'm interested in:
Mass Effect 2Gran Turismo 5Arcania: A Gothic TaleBioshock 2Command and Conquer 4
What I'll skip
Napoleon: Total War reason: Total War games are buggy and have horrible AI. Seem to be getting worse with each release (though Medieval II was pretty good)StarCraft II reason: I think Blizzard games rely on ridiculously excessive amounts of hype to sell. If Blizzard put out a piece of shit, it would still get a 9/10 (grabs flame resistant suit)
Star Trek Online
Diablo 3 if this year, if next might be too late for me to get much gaming in, finishing college and paying bills, that sorta thing.
Sins 2 would love to see it, but Devs aren't saying anything, so dont know if they want to do something else first, but would be nice to hear something.
oh, haha, should have been at the top of the list but Guild Wars 2.
And looking for some other cool space games, Jump Gate Evolution looks too much like XCom for me, but maybe Black Prophecy, but it also looks perhaps too much like XCom. interesting, but certainly not as large scale as Sins.
-Teal
Guild Wars 2 and FFXIII
Some are definite, some are maybe, depending on how they are at release.
Elemental : War of Magic
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Alien vs. Predator
Dawn of War 2 : Chaos Rising
Combat Mission : Normandy
AI War : The Zenith Remnant
Disciples III
Assassin's Creed II
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
Sins : Trinity
Splinter Cell : Conviction
Fallout New Vegas
Mafia 2
Mount & Blade : Warband
By and far my most anticipated is SW:TOR. I've been playing MMOs for about 10 years now, and the last 6 or so years have been pretty meh ( after eq1 wore off. Also played EQ2, LoTRO, WAR, Myst Online/Uru/etc., Tabula Rasa, HGL, CoV ( sorta...abandoned by the time I got out of the tutorial, lol ) and I think there were 2 or so others. )
After that the others, in no real order are : Sup Com 2, DoW2:CR, AC2, ME2. I'm sure there are others I'll buy ( Like perhaps Elemental. ), but they just aren't in my "anticipated" list.
BTW: Starcraft 2 is not a game..its 3:( They wanna make a stupid money grab like that, I'm not buying it.
Note: There are numerous games released in the last year or two that I'm interested in getting -- I continue to eye Sins of a Solar Empire, for instance -- but I have not included them on this list. I've also excluded any upcoming games if I'm not sure they're coming out this year.
Must-have games:
Elemental: War of Magic
Distant Worlds
Games I'm very interested in, but haven't actually made a decision to purchase yet:
Assassins Creed II
King Arthur: The Roleplaying Wargame (Yes, I know it came out in 2009, but I'm waiting for the game to become availaible on disk form, which supposedly won't be for a while yet.)
Sins of a Solar Empire: Diplomacy
Games I would maybe buy if it weren't for the developer's horrible track record with previous titles:
Napoleon Total War (That says it all, really.)
Starcraft 2.
Honorable mention Super Mario Galaxy 2 (yes, I know it's not on the PC).
