Its us again! Here to bring you yet another exciting community topic!!!!
This topic is dedicated to any stories, lore, epic poems, novels, Role Playing...anything your heart desires to share!!!
We are always up for a good read and are excited to see what you all create from DS.
We will be featuring hopefully some neat post in this orginal post every so often. Maybe be something we liked or we though it need attention! So, aim your Ogrov at that writers block and get your fingers typing!
There aren't any rules, but we do have some guidelines to follow so that we all can participate and enjoy ourselves.-There is really no limit on what you post just as long as it is Distant Stars related.-Most members are participating in a single large story with the occasional side story or two. While this thread is certainly not limited to just that story, for the benefit of all readers and participants, please begin your post with how we're supposed to handle it. (Personal Story) (DS RP) (Trader Space) Examples of this can be found all throughout the thread or by looking at this post. https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/21/#2596003 This will help us all out by letting us know if you're trying to set yourself up to join the main lore, if you plan on just telling your own story, or if you're just writing lullabies for children to sing before they go to bed.-While we don't expect you to 'Play the game' in your stories, we do ask that you keep any liberties that you take be grounded within the game. For example: Talking about your space marines invading another ship is not something the game covers, so feel free to be inventive on how it would happen. However, carrying point singularity rifles that open up little black holes is beyond the scope of the game and will not be allowed. Soldiers with phasic armor that prevents them from being wounded let alone even being hit, while being relevant to the technology in the game would also not be allowed. The point is to be fair to the other people. We encourage you to ask yourselves, would this work in the game, and how would I feel if someone used this on me? If You feel strongly that it would work and you'd be okay with it being used against you, then by all means, use it. Fantasy posting, dream sequences, and April Fool's postings are of course, immune from this guideline.-We highly encourage you to message other members for help or advice. There is a TeamSpeak channel that is frequently used by the regulars to talk issues out or just shoot the breeze behind the scenes. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of these resources. Also, 'regulars' may send you messages with suggestions, concerns, or advice. It's nothing personal, so please do not be offended, they're just trying to help keep the lore consistent within these guidelines. If there's any doubt at all about anything, just message one of the people who you see posting a lot. If they don't know, they'll pass your message along to someone who does or tell you who you need to talk to.-It is also highly recommended that you message other RPers before posting anything involving their stuff. If you don't, you're likely going to find all of DS rising up against you.-In an effort to reduce clutter, we're asking that Out Of Character (OOC) commenting be either sent to the individual for whom it is intended by using the private message feature, or take it to another thread. https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/366762 is a thread frequented by many of the lore writers and random comment posting about anything under the sun is highly encouraged there as well in an attempt to get the thread locked. Enjoy.

Some resources that we have spent hours, days, and weeks working on that will help out all participants in this thread. We ask that you look through these to help you better understand the region.-About Distant Stars- https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/11/#2532381This post will give you a lot of basic information on what the region of space is like, how to get there, and who is there waiting for you.-Distant Stars Maps- https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/23/#2604760This post provides you with a quick look at the region and provides you with a download link where you can get yourself a copy of the posted maps in their unreduced forms. They're very helpful when trying to figure out where to go and who you're likely going to run into when you get there. Maps of individual systems are posted throughout the thread. They're generally posted by the first person to explore the system. If you don't know if a system has been explored or not or want to see a map of a system that has been explored, ask around via PM or TeamSpeak. Someone will point you to the place.-Character Biographies- https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/11/#2532380This post is a general collection of the main RP characters whom you will likely have contact with. We ask that all people posting in the main lore post their main character(s) bio as soon as possible so that the rest of us have a little background on who your character is, how they like to fight, where do they come from, and why they're there. Read the existing bios for examples on what we're looking for.

A nondescript shuttle moved through space towards the Vasari trade port orbiting Portage VII. On board, Lord Ryat went over his latest intel reports. Admiral Alexander's had come just as he was leaving marked urgent so Ryat opened up that one first. He read it over and put it down musing over it. As for the resupply of Portage I, he wasn't suprised and was on his way to meet up with someone to help with that. The other dealing with the Kris Slavers popping through to Eras VII was a bit disturbing. Lord J'rah had said nothing about it being connected to the rest of the network. Maybe he did and Ryat just didn't catch it. No matter, he would foward that detail to Lord J'rah with his own comments. He began to go through the rest of his reports, and sighed. The Advent had a serious set of defenses over Kyrene III and IV with massive fleets over each one. How he was going to deal with these was something that bothered him. That artifact and its abilities must be removed from the Advent's hands before they figured out how to use it. He played through many scenarios as the shuttle approached the trade port with nothing to satisfy him. "My Lord, we have arrived," the shuttle stewardess told him. He looked up at her, smiled and thanked her. He proceeded to leave the shuttle by himself and leave the shuttle bay. He walked a few corridors and entered another docking bay. This one was larger and darker, with ships spread out, shut down and quiet. He walked past three ships and turned to go between two. He approached Gerrard who was leaning on one of the ships under its pylon. "You're late," he said in a defiant tone. Lord Ryat frowned at it. "Your point," he responded. Gerrard didn't say anything. "I have a job for you," Lord Ryat continued. "Need you to hit the Kris Slavers in their home system of Austran. Usual pay with all the junk you can scavenge from our recent battle. And there is a lot." "No," Gerrard said. An eyebrow rose on Lord Ryat's suddenly stone face. "May I ask why?" he asked. "We need you to call of your boys," Gerrard said as he left the shadow and approached Lord Ryat. "Specificily your boy Roesh. He is sticking his nose where it shouldn't and we want him to stop, or we will stop him. HARD!" "Roesh isn't 'my boy' as you put it so that I can order him around," Ryat said quietly. "As for your desire to try and stop him, be my guest. Just don't call for me to help out when you find yourself in a bind." "We don't need you anymore," Gerrard said with a laugh, "We got all the technology we need to destroy any fleet that comes for us and we can take what we want. All thanks to you of course." "You're welcome, of course," he said. "Of course what can be given can be taken away," he added with a wintery smile. "We've got that problem solved," Gerrard said and made a hand motion. Several men stepped out of shadows with weapons in their hands. Lord Ryat's expression never changed. "You pirates never change," he said very quietly.
(Personal / DS) Tim makes his way to the fourth moon of Finley 4. It was decided that fleet will make their headquarters there, but no real urgency had been made to build the moon up outside of basic housing modules for work crews and those wishing to live there. His shuttle lands at the only completed super structure on the moon, a large spaceport complex capable of holding dozens of transfer vehicles at the same time. A desireable feature for moving thousands of personnel off planet and to the ships extremely rapidly. He walks around the complex taking note of various things. The underground maglev trains that can shuttle people to and from sites like the currently under construction military academy and headquarters complexes, the future war college and massive training complex, and his favorite feature, the proposed officers training school, a necessity for giving his frigate and cruiser captains the training they'll need, as well as training entire capital ship crews. A wing of the complex that is completely dedicated to historical battles in human history. Another wing that has more underground trains ready to have their tunnels completed that will take servicemen and women to their housing. The overall order and discipline of the people who are already there... For the first time since arriving at the Distant Stars, Tim feels at home. His mind drifts off to a vision of large structures and buildings all clustered together. Pockets of them all over the moon. He envisions himself flying over the various complexes seeing what they look like when they're finished. Fresh paint, uniform looks, proudly displaying their names over their main entrances. Every commander's wish... A place where recruits are turned into soldiers. A place where soldiers are turned into a well oiled military machine. A place where that machine is tuned to become a force to be reconed with. A place where that force is taught how to deal with any challenge the universe can throw at it... "Sir." a man interrupts his daydream like haze. "Can I show you anything specific?" Tim snaps back into reality. "Hmmm. Oh. Um, yes lieutenant. The facility commander, where can I find him?" "He is currently offsight monitoring adjustments being made to the headquarters complex." the lieutenant replies. "Adjustments?" "Yes sir. Certain pockets of soil were found to be softer then expected, and rather then waste time bringing in extra equipment and delaying the project until optimal compaction is acquired, the site layout was redesigned to avoid putting buildings on those areas." "Who approved the changes?" "Ms. Pierce, sir. Citing that she was in charge of Planetary Administration and planning and construction on this moon falls under that so she took it upon herself to sign off on the redesign." "Well if my vision is being changed behind my back, I may as well go see what it is now." "Yes sir. Follow me sir. The headquarters complex is approximately 40 clicks from our present location. The maglev can get us there in about 5 minutes." The two head off to the train that will take them to the work site. When they board, they sit down and buckle up. An attendent checks a panel to make sure the lap belts are all connected on the seats registering someone sitting on them. When she's done she sits in her own seat, buckles up, and presses a button that sends the train down the track into a large airlock. The door closes behind them, the air is sucked out and the door in front of them opens. The train then begins it's journey. It starts off slowly, but steadily gains speed, within a minute, it hits it's cruising speed and the lights lining the tunnel fade to striped blurs. A few minutes later it begins to slow down and when they near the end, they pass through another airlock and repressurize. When the train enters the station and stops at the platform, the seatbelts automatically unbuckle letting everyone stand up and exit. "Now that's a nice little feature, who came up with that one?" Tim asks. "I don't know sir." the lieutenant replies. "The C.O. is this way." Tim is lead to the edge of the station where stairs head up above ground. Their ID's are both checked and they're given hard hats to wear on the site. They head up and out onto the grounds and over to a large group of people pointing at different things on construction plans set up on display boards. The lieutenant walks up to a man and returns to Tim. "Sir." he says while he salutes. When Tim responds in kind he walks off back to the maglev train. The man the lieutenant talked to walks over and introduces himself. "Major Berkeley, Fleet Admiral. Pleasure to meet you." "Likewise, I'm sure. What's all of the hoopla over there for?" "Oh you know how it is... The minute something gets changed from the original plans, people start squabbling like a bunch of little girls." "Anything I can help with?" "Be my guest. I doubt you'll have much of an impact other then a photo op. These guys are civilian contract workers." "Yeah well, I'm signing their checks, so if they want to get paid they'll do what I tell them to, when I tell them to do it." Tim and Major Berkeley rejoin the group and Tim starts to call the shots on who's doing what and when and sends everyone off to get busy. He stands there watching as the work site buzzes with activity. Modules of all shapes and sizes are hoisted into the air and set on top of one another like putting pieces of a jig saw puzzle together, the buildings on the complex begin to take their shapes. Welders bond the modules together and masons follow behind covering the seams up. Electricians, plumbers, and carpenters make all of the connections inside and are followed by drywallers who cover the gaps up. Feeling a sense of accomplishment, he decides to hang around and solve any more disputes that arrive for a little while. After several hours pass, Tim realizes that work on the site goes on all day and night. Having withnessed a shift change already, he decides to head back out to space and the comfort of one of the ships.
Thenos sat back in his chair on the bridge of the Advent trade vessel. He was headed to the Finley system to follow up on his offer to make a meditation chamber on Finley 2, and had chosen to take a trade ship, as it was a civilian vessel, and could still carry all the necessary resources for the specialised building. Thenos’ ship passed by the four starbases at the star without incident, and then jumped to Finley 1. As the ship emerged from phase space, Thenos came face-to-face with another starbase.
“Looks like they’ve built a lot since I was last here,” commented the captain of the trade vessel. As the ship moved closer to the planet, Thenos opened a secure comm channel that he knew would put Henry on the line.
“Hello, this is Roesh Free Traders speaking,” came Henry’s voice as his image faded in on the screen, “how can I do for you?”
“Hey, Henry, it’s Thenos. I’m here about building the meditation chamber on Finley 2, and I was told to run the request from Tim by you.”
“Oh yes,” Henry said, “he mentioned it. I’ve already cleared it with Finley 2’s building crews, so they’re ready to go the moment they get schematics.”
“Thanks for preparing in advance. I’ve got all of the specialist materials for the central chamber onboard, so I assume I can just carry on to the planet.”
“Well, wait a second. Molly and I would like to tag along, if you don’t mind.”
“It’s your system, you don’t need to ask, but who’s Molly? I don’t think I’ve met her.”
“She’s essentially the system governor,” Henry explained, “and she probably just wants to come along so that she can rant about how the budget isn’t exactly how she wants it.”
“It’s exactly the same back on Rebirth. This job let’s me get away from all the nagging by the council.”
“Hmm. Our cultures may be considerably different, but politics never change, eh?”
They laughed, and preparations were made for the trade ship to take on new passengers and set off to Finley 2.
The ship, now with Henry and Molly onboard, began its journey. The first gravity well along the route was that of the barren moon of Finley 1, where a Kol was undergoing extensive repairs. Next there was an asteroid that had a gaping crater where something must have collided with it. Finally, the vessel arrived at Finley 2, where there was yet another capital ship that looked like it had got in a fight with a comet.
“There are a lot of damaged ships around,” Thenos commented, “has there been a problem?”
“Oh, just pirates. Yeah, that’s it. Nothing to worry about. We just underestimated them a bit,” Henry replied. Thenos knew that Henry was concealing a bigger issue, and was perhaps trying to cover for any apparent weakness in Finley’s defences. Thenos hoped that Henry would have trusted him enough not to take advantage of this, but evidently Henry was still worried about Roesh’s latest trade partner.
“Well, any time you need help, my fleet can usually come and give a hand.”
“We’re okay for the moment,” Henry said, and tried to point the discussion away from the RFT’s weaknesses, “but Roesh says that tensions are high amongst the more militant factions in Distant Stars, so if the TEC try to expand in your direction, I’m sure that a large sum of money can point them in a different direction.”
“Good to have your assurance there. The Collective would rather not face an attack on any planets until we have a more secure position in Distant Stars.”
Once the trade ship was unloaded, and the cargo shuttled to the construction site, Thenos handed over the schematics to Molly, who distributed them to all of the necessary officials on Finley 2. Thenos was then invited by Henry to the construction site to see what would be going on.
“The foreman says that the design is like nothing he’s ever worked on before,” Henry said, “but he promises that the inner chamber will be ready for inspection in two to three days.”
“That’s quick,” Thenos said, “your must have very efficient fabrication techniques.”
“Well,” Molly said, “we have also diverted considerable resources into making sure that Casey’s latest anger management device is made quicker than other civilian structures. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and find some accommodation for our stay.”
“You know what,” Thenos said, “she is exactly like a member of the council backon Rebirth. Like you said, politicians are all the same.”
Thenos found his way to the rather comfy suite that had been prepared for him. These next few days would be a perfect way of avoiding the stress of running a high-upkeep military with a council that kept trying to find new ways to cut off funding. Also, Thenos hoped to learn a little bit more about the Finley system, and perhaps talk to Casey. This time he hoped to catch up on old times, and perhaps find out how she came to be in this area of space.
(DS RP) (Just so yall know Carbon is alive. As well I Its not much.)
"So..then she said, 'You can hog tie me Borus.' And remember she got about 100 pounds on this boy..."
The room erupted in laughter. The officer mess hall was full and merry today. Everyone had a drink in hand.
"Oh God, the look on his face was priceless." another officer manged to say over the laughter.
"That was the last night Borus was with us...wasnt it?" Carbon asked as the noise died down slightly. Several of the officers around nodded. Most still wiping tears away from their eyes.
"Always wonder why he never came back..."
"If she ate him he got off easy." The crown chucked again as one of the officers guestured out the mental image they were all thinking.
Carbon walked over and filled his glass again. Smile on his face, it was time like this he knew that all this was worth it. Snapping out of his daydream and returned back to the group of men describing another daring tell of planetside leaves."...so then Craig...."------------------------The holoprojector hummed as the star map flashed the same thing over and over."Is this the best projection of the timeline as we have?"
"Yes sir, we have factored in possible TDN fleet involvement both on this side of the wormhole and the other. Also factoring in any random Alien surge..."
"And this is all you have to show for it?!?" a holodisk was thrown across the room. "You mean to tell me...us...that your unable to find an acceptable solution?"
"Bu...bu..but...Ive have factor in everything short of an gravatomic event. Which would be impossible given the current standings. Its unstable anyhow."
"Then you have not done the job correctly...when asked to give ALL possible outcome...it means all."

Alexander rests in his seat, looking over the work taking place on the bridge. In the process of installing the visual comunication system, Todd moved a few panels and rerouted a few system connections, both to make his work more comfortable and to add a small degree of simplicity to the clutter of the bridge's layout. A security officer walks onto the bridge and addresses the admiral, "Sir, a Mr. Roesh wishes to enter the bridge."
Alexander nods and rises from his seat, "Very well, let him in."
The security officer allows Roesh in and Alexander greets him, "Roesh, it's about time we meet."
"Likewise, Admiral Draakjacht. I apologize for the delay. It's just so hard to get away from all the business of a trade, especially one so big."
Alexander smiles, "I understand. It's been the same for me since your men have been in-system. I apologize for not having better accomodations for you."
Roesh shrugs in reply, "It's okay. This is a military vessel, not a luxury liner. I'm sure Todd wanted to make it more of one just for the challenge. Speaking of which, if your men ever want to get away, the Finley system has quite a nice variety of places for shore leave."
"I will keep that in mind. I understand your men are ready to be moving out soon?"
"Yes, we already have the materials ready for shipment and your supplies are distributed as you requested. I thought it only fitting that we should meet once before we leave," Roesh replies.
"I'm glad you did," a reply to which Roesh gives out a brief laugh and Alexander simply smiles. "Do take care to keep your transports close to the Dunovs. We recently had a Vasari incursion through the gate."
"Still trying to figure out how to isolate the device?"
Alexander shakes his head, "I believe it was only an oversight. I'm sure you saw the Vasari vessels as you came through. They should be able to fix it so we don't have a repeat."
"Good to hear. Todd would love to get his hands on that thing and examine down to the bolt. Until that happens, I guess the best I can hope for is that you make sure my men are kept aware of any potential dangers using it."
"Of course. Mr. Roesh, as I understand it, Finley does possess a gas giant, is that correct?"
"It does."
"Have you set up gravitational colonies?"
Roesh smiles, "We are still working on it. Our R&D has high hopes that we might soon see tests provide us with the first systems for such a colony."
"Well," Alexander's tone changes as a slight grin moves across one half of his face, "if you ever need data concerning anti-grav systems, I would love to see what else you might be able to provide us with. Consider it an offering for the future."
"I hope we might find a way to make it happen," Roesh says. "As for now, I have to take off. I hope to see you again, Admiral."
"I as well. My Akkans are moving civilians through the gate to Eras VII. I'll coordinate it so they escort your men that far."
Roesh thanks Alexander for the gesture and the two say their goodbyes before Roesh departs. Within the hour, the two Dunovs and their trade vessels group together, Akkans hugging them on the front and rear. The formation jumps out together and makes a line through the Vasari gate, travelling uneventfully to the edge of Eras VII's gravity well, where the Roesh Free Traders depart from the presence of the Lions and begin their journey home.
(Stant: I'm thinking that you don't have gas giant colonization yet, but correct me if I'm wrong. I can substitute another technology if need be.)
" Sir there is no sign of it"
Xenon was standing in the bridge of the Osiris, he had his men send probes after the vessle that had Beta on it. He needed to find it and destroy it, but his men couldn't find any traces of it.
" Have we looked for his phase trails?" Xenon asked the man
" Sir, thats nearly imposible to do, and there would be no way to find them now. Too much time has passes"
" Yes, your right" Xenon replied, knowing that there was no way of knowing where the ship had gone.He steped away from the man and moved out of the bridge. He had thought about going to tell Carbon about it, but decided not to since he didnt want all the others to shift thier focas off of the Advent. If it showed up again then he would have to deal with it then. Xenon was walking, not really watching where he was going, when a marine steped in front of him. Xenon stoped quickly as not to run into the man.The marine just stood there looking at him.
"Yes, can i help you?" Xenon asked the man
"I'm here to turn myself in" The man said back
" Turn yourself in for what?" Xenon asked a little puzzled.
" Sir, I'm a member of the Unity's Hand, I want to turn myself in"
Xenon looked at the man in front of him, a normal looking man, nothing standing out on him, not one hint of a terrorist in him
" Well this is intresting" Xenon told the man, as he guestured over a few of the other marines that where standing guard near by.
" Men take this man to the brig, straight to interigation room five, Also call Vlad and tell him that he is needed. Have him meet me down there" Xenon told the men. They quickly grab the man and restrained him. They took him away, and down into the bowles of the ship. Xenon walked quickly to a communication hub on the ship, getting the comm officer on the bridge.
" Send a meassage to Carbon, just had a terrorist turn himself in, going to talk to right now."
" yes sir it will go out"
Xenon made his way down into the ship, Finially reaching the brig. Vlad was waiting for him.
" So what do you plan to do with him?" Vlad asked the Paragon
" Going to talk to him, see what he can tell us" Xenon said back right before he entered the room with the lone man sitting in it.
" So What made you want to turn yourself in?" Xenon asked as he sat down
" The last battle we did, on the Kostra cannon. I saw people around me dieing. And i relized that, im one of the ones killing these people. I'm helping the Advent kill them. I just... I .. I could live with myself. Do you understand sir? I could sit and be at peace knowing that im resposible for killing so many" The man pleaded with Xenon
" Ok, ok. So if you want to keep people from dieing, i need to know everything, That way we can keep more people alive." Xenon said as he opened up a pad of paper. Everything was recorded, video and audio. But Xenon like to write some things down, as it made the person feel like what he was telling him actually mattered, even if it didn't.
" Ok well, when we go to attack the Advent, i was supposed to disable the exo-suits in my crew, Hit them with a E.M.P. grenade that was going to be stuck next to the power supplies. But there are a whole lot of people that are supposed to do all kinds of things."
" Ok like what , and why done you write down the names you know" Xenon said as he handed him the pad of paper and his pen
The man began writing on the pad as quickly as he could, " Well Jason Merch, he is supposed to disable the rapid launcher in the hanger." The man said , writing names down faster then he was saying them.
" Do you know who is in charge" Xenon asked the man
" All i know is all my orders came from a communacator that Elania has in her truck by her bunk. All the trasmissions came from........"
The man sat there looking straight ahead, staring at the wall in front of him. Drool started to come out of his mouth as he continued his contest with the wall. Xenon looked at the wall, then back at the man. The he sprang to action, racing out into the hall way and grabing one of the helments off of one of the marines. He ran back inside and put it on the man. When he did the man fell over on the table in front of him, the helmet fell off of his head.
" Damn it!" Xenon yelled out, Vlad came racing into the room
" What happened!" Vlad asked Xenon
" They scrabled his mind, he's braind dead now." Xenon said as he picked up the helmet and threw it against the wall.
" Damn, what do we do now" Vlad asked
" We take this list and we get everyone he named on it, though it wouldnt suprise me if they are all in the same state" Xenon said handing Vlad the pad of paper, " Move a fast as you can, go now"
Vlad grabed the pad and took off out of the room taking the marnies with him
Xenon had been so close to finding out who was in charge of the Unity's Hand. It had slipped right though his fingers. He cursed again out loud before leaving the room, the man still laying face down on the table.
Several Vasari capital ships moved through the gravwell towards the edge making way to jump out. Aside from Skijar, an ancient venerable Evacuator, the ships were new, just off the line. Three Kortuls and three Vulkaros was the rest of the capital fleet composition. Thirty Enforcers, forty Skirmishers, twenty Assailants, and twenty Sentinels joined up at the edge. Lord J'rah was in the flagbridge of Skijar looking over his intel reports to pass the time. With Ryat's and Xenon's agents focused on the next target and with information sharing happening, J'rah was free to send his to less important areas. Like this Roesh character that recently should up to help with supplies. The latest intel report said that he had made contact with an Advent splinter colony. And was on friendly terms. J'rah wondered if Roesh could setup a meeting between him and the Advent in hopes of forming an alliance of sorts. Previous attempts were made with grim results. "My Lord we are ready to jump," an aide officer informed him. "Proceed," he ordered. And the expedition fleet jumped out towards Portage VI. The vessels shook as they moved like slowly through phase space. "Jump degradation, " the ops officer reported. "looks like their tech is still superior to ours." "In some ways," Lord J'rah said his face displaying a cold wintery smile as a human would put it, though a human would not be able to interpret as such. The Kris Slavers clan had indeed been ahead in a lot of tech verus the J'kar clan, but the J'kar had allies which helped out a lot and gave them an edge. Which the Kris Slavers would see today. The fleet finally broke through phase space to Portage VI, a moon sized savannah planet. Savannah planets were a treasure to Vasari. Though their birth planet was volcanic, much genetic manipulation was required to make their slaves or servants able to inhabit such areas. Savannah planets had much that the Vasari liked, dry and hot, with only minimal need to adapt to the atmosphere. This created almost a vacation planet were the Vasari could keep their slaves close by and enjoy the enviroment. Of course to keep the potential of rebellion down, only a minimal set of slaves were kept. Which meant that Lord J'rah needed to worry little about human casualties when bombing the planet. A small fleet was guarding the planet. One Skirantra and two Kortuls made up the capital ship group with twenty Enforcers, thirty Assailants, ten Lasurak Transports and five Overseers for an escort. The Skirantra was ancient and had fired up its powerful nanobanks and launched an incredible amount of bombers towards Lord J'rah's fleet, followed closely by attending fighters from the Lasuraks. It also formed up six new Assailants with its replicators. The strike craft came screaming at the fleet. "Form Chi'n formation," Lord J'rah ordered. Chi'ns were in Vasari ancient times a well disiplined force that had little in the way of ranged weapons and instead used a turtle like formation with locked shields to stop the attacks while allowing them to approach and engage the enemy with their deadly weapons. With strike craft a similar formation idea came about for when you had none of your own strike craft. The three Kortuls, two forward one in back, were in an outside triangle formation surrounding the fleet with the ability to jam strike craft weapons. This came on as the enemy strike craft came into range. Further the Sentinels were inside and had their weapons overcharged to send out a devastating attack upon the strike craft. Vasari fighters died swiftly, unable to withstand the massed firepower of the Sentinels, while the bombers lasted a little longer due to their stronger armour but were unable to do anything worhwhile thanks to the jam strike craft weapons field. With the strike craft threat marginalized, the Lasuarks had switched on their shields which slowed down their strike craft rebuild rate and the Skirantra though not as strongly effected was still only one ship and had wasted it antimatter reserves adding to its fleet, Lord J'rah ordered the fleet into attack formation and to move forward. The three Kortuls and the Enforcers shifted to the front with Skirmishers forming on the wings. Vulkaros and Assailants formed up behind that line with Sentinels spaced out between to deal with the occasional strike craft coming to attack. Skijar brought up the rear by itself. Kris Slaver's Assailants were the first to fire. Phase missiles came slashing into the frontline of J'rah fleet. Lord J'rah flinched as his line was awashed with fiery explosions. "My lord we have reports that forty to forty five percent of Slaver missiles ignored the shields!" his intel officer reported. J'rah grimaced at this note, for his own missiles only had a ten to fifteen percent chance of ignoring shields. His tech people were working as hard as they could to try and overcome this defect but with all the other projects going on it would be a while. Still he did have a lot invested in armor and structural integrity which made his ships more survivalble then the Slavers, plus with the TEC's help and increased the armor and repair rates even higher and so the frontline weathered the storm of phase missiles with only minimal damage. And they reach the line of enemy Kortuls and Enforcers ready to fight. Which brought in the next bit of technology gleaned from TEC scientists. Rapid firing weapons. During the first attacks upon the TEC he had laughed along with many captains at the time at the TEC's use of 'primitive' mass driven weapons. But when the TEC opened up on those 'primitive' weapons at staggering rates of fire which ate up shields and armor at a powerful rate, the Vasari stopped laughing. When he and Lord Ryat formed an alliance he immediately put forth the idea of studying the TEC's ability to fire at such high rates and see if it could be used for Vasari weapons. It was possible through the use of some high end nanotech and though energy weapons could not attain the same rate of fire as mass driven weapons, the rates were phenomial. So when the two frontlines clashed the results were highly in J'kar's favor as they could send four rounds of wave weapons for the Slavers three. Mixed with higher armour and strucutral integrity and just plain more ships the J'kar Enforcers massacared the Slavers Enforcers. The Kortuls sent surges of power to thier weapons with one being a veteran so it knew how to get the most out of the surges. It almost seemed to send out four beams of energy instead of two against the enemy. The J'kar Assailants opened up on the enemy Kortuls, and even though they could only go through the shields a little bit, with thier higher rate of fire plus stronger explosives, again thanks to the TEC, they smashed into the Kortuls with a vengence. One Kortul disappeared in a massive fireball that shattered formation it was in. The other fought valiantly, with surges of power sent to its shields to keep them up. The three Kortuls of the J'kar turned upon it as well and smashed down the shields then broke its back. It drifted out the battle, a broken husk. The J'kar Enforcers continued their charge into the mass of enemy Assailants and they fell quickly to powerful attacks. The Skirmishers mean while had flanked the whole conflict and charged into the group of Vasari light carriers and the Overseers. The Skirantra attempted to escape but Skijar fired off a gravity warhead and drastically slowed it down. A Nano-Disassembler warhead followed closely and the capital carrier shuttered under the attack as the Nano-Disassembler not only wrecked havoc on the structural integrity but also disrupted the armour so it was not very effective. This allowed the Assailants to focus on it and soon the Skirantra was shattered. "Excellent," Lord J'rah said to himself, "and not a single ship lost." "Begin orbital bombardment," he ordered, "activate Planet Drain." All the capital ships proceeded to surround the planet and fire their bombardment lasers, with the Vulkoras releasing bombardment platforms to help with the attack. Skijar moved closer to the planet with its maw at the front opening up wider. Soon a massive green wave of energy was released striking through the atmosphere and smashing into the crust of the planet. Another followed and another, developing into a continuous series of waves striking the crust causing it to tremble than burst forth like a massive volcano. The atmosphere became extremely turbulent with tornados and massive electrical storms rushing around the small planet. Soon green energy waves began to travel from the ground towards Skijar carrying debris to its waiting maw. This went on for several hours as the planet shook and release all its internal treasure to the hungry monster above. Then, as if satiated, Skijar stopped its feeding and the volcano collapsed in on its self, leaving a deep scar in the surface. The atmosphere came rushing back into the newly created void that set off a loud thunderclap that shook the world again. Then silence. There were no animal sounds, the wind had stopped, it was like death had come and left with everything. Up above the silent tomb Lord J'rah looked over the results. He was pleased, for many resources were harvested to help with the war effort. Now time for the next step. "Send down the colonists," he commanded. Many pods were released down to the planet to begin recolonization. As many of the colonizing tasks were preformed he looked over at the intel reports that had come in during the battle. Two were from Lord Ryat. He pulled up the first and looked it over. Apperently the Slavers had figured out a way around the roadblocks in the phase gate node system that his techs had put in place but no matter. Soon a new phase gate system would be put in place that would be under their exclusive domain and the attacks would just stop. He sent of a message to all the commanders explaining what was happening and stressed the need to watch over the gate until the new one was constructed. Then he recommend destroying it to avoid it from being used again. He looked over the next one from Lord Ryat. It read simply, "Gone to take care of the pirates, be back soon." J'rah let out a curse.
(Personal / DS) Henry and Molly watch as the meditation chamber and surrounding building are constructed. First the central and integral piece of the building, the meditation chamber itself. The materials used were indeed special, the looks alone were almost hypnotic to Henry and Molly. Like looking into dark black wall of marble that had pockets of violet and midnight blue added in. The dark colors all blended and seem to come alive and move on it's own for very brief moments. The two stood there in a trance until one of the project workers snapped them out of it with a question. "Mr. Stolvey, we're running a little short on stone for the exterior walls. Can you get some here by tomorrow?" he asks. Henry looks at him, "Oh, yes. Of course. Just give me a list of what's needed and I'll call it in myself." "Yes sir." the man said before returning to his duties. Henry's gaze returns to the central chamber at the pieces are locked together and secured into place. Thenos takes the time to walk around it several times inspecting it for even the slightest defect. Once satisfied with the work, he talks to a few workers who then begin to take great care in covering it with tarps and a protective wooden shell. Once that was complete, work on the outer chamber and the main antechamber began. Hours later, all of the framework was in place and stone siding was starting to be attached. One of the workers Handed Henry the list of materials they were short, prompting him to leave the site and get the materials on their way. Molly, feeling a bit uncomfortable around Thenos, excuses herself and heads back to Finley 1 to end her day. Henry returns and is a confused by her absence. Without a word from Henry, Thenos says, "She left." "Oh? Reading my mind?"" Henry asks. "No, reading your face." "Henry chuckles, "Was it that obvious?" Thenos smiles which gives Henry his answer. "I read her mind though. She was uncomfortable. Recalling memories of her studies when she was younger about us Advent." "It is a bit of a culture shock to some people to find out that everything they were told about a group of people, isn't entirely true. We both know the information provided is based in fact." "But it's a retelling of someone else's interpretation of those facts." "It is, yes. At my age though, I've experienced life on the front lines, I've experienced life in the free market... I know what I was told as a child, but I've seen enough on my own to know the facts from the opinions." "I've come to understand that about you and Roesh as well as many of the others. None of you hesitate when approached." "We've all come to the conclusion that though there are core differences that set us all apart in this galaxy, there are just as many core similarities that bring us together. Sure we look different, have different lifestyles, and radically different histories, but when it all comes down to it, we're all just trying to survive, trying to be happy, and trying to live life to it's fullest. I can't speak for Molly, but I assume her discomfort is purely due to lack of experience. It'll probably be like that systemwide at first. I have faith that over time they'll come to reasonable conclusions of their own and disreguard much of the opinions they've inherited and replace them with their own." "They certainly have the right leadership in place to guide them." "If you say so, but we're not actually in charge of public opinion. We just operate the business that brings everyone here." "Still, that's better then what most others would do." Henry Shrugs not really having much else to say on the subject. When the outer chamber walls get put into place, Henry and Thenos decide that they're no longer needed since the most important piece is now completed and protected. Thenos heads back to his room to rest up and to further enjoy his time away from home. Henry decides to check up on Tim, but changes his mind when he recieves a report that Roesh and Todd have returned. He immediately sets out to the starbase at Finley 1 to meet up with them. "Henry!" Roesh yells out when Henry's shuttle lands. "Roesh, Todd." he replies with. "So I'm reading some of the updates here and it seems like it says half of out fleet got hosed." Todd comments. "You're reading that correctly, Todd. Tim's hiding out at his future headquarters last I checked while the crews of the ships in drydock are getting fixed up." Henry says. "I'm going back to my office and scheduling every final test I can think of on new weapon and shielding systems." "I anticipated that and have already had extra supplies delivered to the research stations. I've also cut back on planetary expansion to fund fleet repairs and expansion once the tests you run are finished." "Awesome. I'm off." Todd says as he runs into the shuttle Henry just landed in and hitches a ride back to Finley 2. "So it appears your little pirate friends didn't like Tim showing up..." Henry says. "I guess not. Whatever it is, it must be good for them to openly take on a registered fleet. I mean it's not like we're just some militia out trying to make a name for ourselves..." Roesh says. "True, although I feel like adding in that in the future, they may underestimate our strength, and since Tim won't take this loss sitting down for too long, we both know he'll go back to get revenge, with or without our approval." "Yep. So we better make sure he's got the equipment to make it back." "Yeah... Well, I'm gonna head planetside. I've had a long day. Thenos is on Finley 2 overseeing the construction of a meditation chamber for Casey." "And Casey is where?" "Don't know. Haven't asked. Probably enjoying the solitude over Finley 3." "You know, I wish I knew that our fleet took a bad loss before I headed back. I would have asked Ryat if he had any information on this group of pirates... Oh well, I'll send him a message. For now I think I'm going to go help out Todd." Henry nods and heads off to another hanger bay to get a shuttle to go planetside while Roesh stays behind to send his message before heading over to Finley 2 to help Todd out.

Deep inside the Distant Stars of space, a lone scout ship on a survey mission for the eventual push in this new sector, untold wealth and trade routes that guarantee riches to all who undertake this endeavor. However, the very nature of serving on scout ships, to leap to the unknown, to face hostile life forms, unusual space phenomal and the dreaded pirates, some ships are never heard from again. This story is about one fateful crew, while facing incredible odds, tried in vain to warn others an oncoming danger this part of the galaxy is unaware of...
Twenty years ago TEC scout ship Minoes went beyond at that time was unexplored region of space what is now called the Distant Stars. They were first to survey Finely, Eurand, Amabius and the Bamntuh black hole. This story picks after they finished their survey of Tyranul star system.
"Bridge to Captain," a female voice came over the comm system, "where finished launching probes and ready to break orbit and head to next system in order sir." "All right, be right up," said Captain Lan. "Three more months and we can go back to Gateway and finally home," he said aloud. Coming out of the lift onto the bridge, Lan can see everyone at their station reading sensor data, "Report." Lt Seles spoke up, "Just launched the last probe sir and making way to Tyranul for the jump to sector 22x146x03," "very good, where's my coffee," said the captain, "hear sir," "thank you crewman," "helm, plot course and engage," "aye sir, engage." The Minoes exits the grav well and proceeded to the star in a blue flash. "All right, lower shades don't need to work on my tan yet", the crew started to chuckle at the joke, "helm, full power to engines", " aye sir", the Minoes sped away across the star grav well to get to the next jump point, "cut engines and let inertia bring us in", "aye sir", Minoes coasted till Helmsman Lt. Cameron brought the ship to a full stop. "Powering up jump drives sir," captain responded, "engage," "yes sir," then Minoes faded into phase lanes of unexplored space. 15 hours later, all hell broke loose....
"RED ALERT, RED ALERT, Captain to the bridge", Lan was awaken just to be thrown on the floor from his bunk, "What the hell", he yelled, Minoes was shaken violently, grabbing his duty jacket heading out the door, he can see crew members holding on for dear life as the ship was shaken to its bulkheads, finally making it to the lift, the lift ascended, but barely with all the shaken, feel as though it was going to plunge to the bottom of the ship. The doors open the bridge, lights at half power, bathed in red flashing lights, captain yelled "Report," Seles yelled back, " we came out of phase space five minutes ago into this, on screen" Lan looked up to the screen and saw in horror the largest black hole he has ever seen. "Full reverse, engineering, I need all available power, Now!!!!" Minoes shaped as the engines roared to life, "Helm, 180 degrees, raise power to aft shields to negate radiation," 'Yes sir,' Minoes was screaming, if she had lungs, she would be almost out of breath, finally the ship broke free of the gravimetric sheer caused by the event horizon of the most feared thing in space by all races. "Take us 1000 km out and hold position, I need a damage report all decks." Comm traffic to the bridge was all a jumble. "Sir, sickbay reports 20 injured, broken bones, lacerations, no fatalities." Engineering reports some bulkheads bulked on three decks, coolant leaks in the main engine and venting some plasma as well, and jump drive is offline." Lan raises one eyebrow and says, "Just gets better and better, and the good news." Seles reports, "Were not drifting, were holding station but long range sensors are down." Lan cleared his throat before speaking, "Launch a probe and have warning beacon ready to launch once we get clear, what's the ETA on engines." Engineering reports half power in one hour, full in three, min six hours for jump drives." Lan presses the intercom for ship wide, "All right people, we almost bought it just getting by with the skin on our teeth, right now were holding station outside a black hole, in order the get the Minoes repaired to the half way point, crews will perform double shifts, engines are our top priority, damage control teams, let engineering know if there is any other damage we may have missed, Captain Lan out".
Captain Lan exited the lift to the engineering deck, "Crewman, where's Cdmr. Reid?" "He should be in the main reaction room, sir," the crewman spoke. "Thank you." Walking through the engine room, passing various displays and control stations, Lan found the Cdmr checking the subroutines on the plasma reaction chamber console screen. "Well, how's it looking?" Reid looked up, "Oh, Hey John, could be worse, flew us in on uncharted black hole huh?" "Not by choice, that's the danger of scout ships, flying into the unknown, you knew that when you signed up." Well, when I signed upped, I thought I be serving on a nice stationary star-base back home." They still haven't finalize the general layout and capabilities of the new star-bases yet, and what they gonna name them." Lan said. Reid said, "Before we left range of the subspace relay transmitter, they were leaning toward naming them after Adm. Argonev." Really?" said Lan, "Because of his actions, his forces were able to hold off the Vasari for two days until relief Forces arrived. It was one of the earliest victories against them, good choice." Looking back at the console, "Not to mention a new start up company called U. E. were to start moving operations in this new region of space." Any other news you heard, Reid?" Typical propaganda, were holding against the aliens and some rumors of unidentified ships on the frontier worlds." "Interesting" said Lan, "and for the real reason I'm here, ship repairs." Actually, were ahead of schedule, got two teams doing EVA's checking the outer hull and currently re-calibrating the jump engines which are online, now." Reid press a control on the panel and a gentle hum goes through the engine room. "Well, your earned your check for this week," smiled Lan. "Thanks Captain, now bout that raise?" said Reid. "Next time, heading to the bridge, if you need me, I'll be there."
(NO LONGER NEEDED, SEE EDIT FOR OP)
"You're lying."
Lieutenant Commander Frishman shakes his head, "I swear I'm telling you the truth."
"I can't believe there's such a thing as space ponies," the helmsman replies while hanging over the tactical station.
"Yes. If you go to the edge of the Helix Nebula, you can enter phase space and these transparent, pink creatures appear, following the ship like dolphins on Evertha do. They sparkle just like the ship, but look like they have four legs that gallop and a head that moves back and forth. I was told they're some kind of creature that resides in phase space near there. If you ever get stationed aboard an Akkan and head out that way, get to the observation deck and look for them," Frishman explains.
As the helmsman turns to the admiral, who rests in his chair, Frishman's hand moves over his mouth to muffle his laughter. The helmsman says, "Tell me this guy is screwing with me, sir."
Alexander looks over with raised eyebrows, glancing at Frishman's red face over the crewman's shoulder. His shoulders raise and mouth gaps for a moment before replying, "I have no idea. I stay away from nebulae."
The helmsman looks back to Frishman, who quickly drops his hand to the station and swallows the laughter. After a moment of thought, the helmsman shrugs and returns to his post. Alexander leaves his seat to address tactical with a voice soft enough not to be heard by others.
"Now that we're done screwing with the newbies, do you have anything for me?"
"Yes, sir. We have a few options, but nothing solid given our lack of intel regarding the planetary defenses. The blunt approach is to have the Vasari seal up the gate and make an all out attack from this angle," Frishman says.
Alexander shakes his head, "Not an option. I want to be sure this gets tied up and I want it as clean as possible."
"If we want to ensure a minimal chance of reinforcements coming through the star, I do have an idea using a classic Pincer movement. One fleet comes around through Alpha Eras, clipping off any enemy presence there. If they run into anything, they have room to back off. Otherwise, they secure the star and signal the other two fleets to come straight in, drawing enemy fire to one angle. The two fleets create a bowl, giving the enemy one way in or out. This is when the fleet at the star comes in and seals up their escape. If we can take them, we push until they crack. If not, we make them panic and then offer a way out, tailing their forces," Frishman concludes.
Alexander stares into space for a moment before nodding, "I like it. Easy to coordinate and still effective. Is it possible that the fleet moving through the star can go without Dunovs? I want to give the direct engagement forces all the staying power we can afford."
Frishman's head bobs to the side, a grimace of uncertainty twisting in the direction of the movement, "It's fully possible since they won't need any support for the longest time, but I always feel off about making a move like that."
"Then we'll do it. We need at least one Akkan with the flanking force to give them an edge on the approach, but the Marzas can take point and weed out cruisers early," Alexander says.
"Red Fleet is ideal for the flanking force. They have the bulk to both inspire fear and likely match anything found at the star," Frishman informs.
"Do we have enough with Blue and Green to hold a fair force?"
"I'm certain we do. I'm just not sure if we have the number of Kols we need to really envelope them. We have to cover three axes, which can be a difficult job if they have capitals approaching the double digits," Frishman replies.
Alexander slaps the top edge of the tactical station, "Alright, draw up orders for this beast and outline it in detail."
He leaves the station and crosses the bridge to lean over the communication officer's shoulder. "Contact Paragon Carbon. Tactical is going to send him an outline for an idea we have and we would love some company on this one. I figure we could use the opportunity to test his reputation."
"Yes, sir," the communications officer replies before jumping to the task.
As Alexander approaches his seat, he speaks without looking anywhere but ahead, "Ensign, the lieutenant commander was screwing with you."
The ensign slams his hands on his station before turning to Frishman with an accusatory finger, "Damn you. I should have known."
A grin breaks across Frishman's face as he shakes his head and continues his work. A couple of chuckles make their way through the air before subsiding beneath their duties.

I always thought that the 'Space Ponies!' Achievment should do something and my father thought of the idea that faint, pink images of phased horses should follow your vessel when leaving a planet with space ponies. Maybe the developers will add them around the time they add a story beyond the 1 minute of established lore in the original and diplomacy intros.
Several trade vessels left the trade port within minutes of each other heading off into different directions. Aboard one Lord Ryat sat, his hands cuffed in front of him as he faced Gerrard. Two pirates stood nearby, armed and tense. "Is this really necessary?" he asked quietly. "If you had just done what we had asked concerning Roesh, you wouldn't be here," Gerrard said. "You know as well as I that I don't have any say in that," Ryat said. "So lets stop the pretense and tell me why you felt it was necessary to abduct me." "The Boss wants to talk and rearrange the agreement," Gerrard said. "That is most unwise," Ryat said. "New Boss," he replied. Ryat nodded his head in understanding. "So were are we going?" Lord Ryat asked. "Her ship," Gerrard said. "Thats all I'm going to tell you." Ryat sighed and settled in for the ride. The trade vessel reached the edge of the gravwell and entered phase space. A couple of days passed as the trade ship jumped many times, most likely to disorient Ryat. Finally upon reaching its destination, Gerrard called Lord Ryat to the view bridge. They were in a deep space gravwell, a point in space that somehow formed a gravity well, scientists were baffled by it. A lone Akkan sat waiting. "There's her ship," Gerrard said, "Junk. Not sure why she calls it that." "Does she call her self Ching Shih?" Lord Ryat asked. "Yeah, why," Gerrard answered. "Its a bit of history," Lord Ryat said, "she probably has Asiatic features as well." "She does," Gerrard said, "how did you figure that out through a silly name like Junk?" "Asians of ancient Earth built ocean going vessels called junks," Lord Ryat said, "They were highly advanced vessels and were used for centuries. Ching Shih was a female pirate in the Asian area, specificially Chinese. I just put two and two together and asked the right questions." "You know," Gerrard said, "Its things like that that scare me the most about you. Able to figure out so much from so little." Lord Ryat merely smiled. The trade ship was dwarfed by the Akkan as it entered the capital ship's hangar bay. Gerrard exited first followed by Lord Ryat and the guards. They out of the hangar bay and through a series of corridors before stopping at an office with two guards. "I have Mr. Ryat here to see the Boss," Gerrard said. One of the gaurds turned to an intercom system and spoken in a language that was not Basic. It almost sounded Asian to Ryat's ears but he was no expert. The door opened and he was pushed inside. Sitting at a cherry wood desk was indeed a woman with asian features. Almost elf-like. She had long black hair and was wearing a black jumpsuit that showed off her slim body. She was leaned back in her overstuffed chair, boots on desk. "Come in, sit down please," she said in a musical voice. Ryat moved with confidence into the room and sat into the chair offered. The woman looked him over for a few moments not saying a thing. Lord Ryat sat quietly. Time passed for a minute or so. "So, aren't you going to ask why you are here?" she said quietly. "I figured you would tell me when you are ready," he replied, "seems how you decided to abduct me and attempt to change the current arrangement." The icy glare from her almost made him shiver, but he held his composure. "I'll start with an introduction," she said, "I am Ching Shih. I brought you here because you won't cooperate with us in stopping Roesh and not reworking the deal we have set in place." "As for Roesh, I have no control over him," Lord Ryat said, "As for the deal, its the same deal I have with all pirates, don't see why you should be different." "Let's just say, I'm attempting to redo things for the benefit of all pirates," she said. "Attempting to make yourself a pirate lord?" he said with a chuckle, "good luck with that." "I don't think that you are in a position to deny me my request," she said with a hint of anger. "But I am," he said, "I won't bother Roesh with what he wants to do, and the deal stays as is." "I could have you killed," she said. "Yes, you could," he acknowledged, "but that would cause other complications, like my fleet going pirate hunting with a vengence, plus you would lose a large supplier of materials to you and other pirates. Something I don't think the other pirate bosses would like to well." "There are many places to hide," she shot back, "plus there are other suppliers. For example I bought this fine ship from someone else." "True, though Akkan and Dunov vessels are a tenth credit a dozen," he conceded, then added, "but no one can boast the selection and fine quality that I have to offer. For example, many of the fine weapons you have installed on this fine vessel are top quality, which came from me or one of my contacts." Ching looked at him in an attempt to stare him down. She held for a good long time but Ryat's gray eyes never flinched from her emerald green eyes. Finally she sat down in a huff and activated the intercom. "Guards, take this gentleman to his room," she said, "we are going to need more time." Lord Ryat stood up as the guards came in. "I guess I will be see you later," he said and walked out of the office. The guards guided him to a nicely furnished room, which suprised him a little. The door closed behind him. The guards did not enter, so he assumed they were standing outside. The room had a nicely made bed in one corner and a desk with a terminal in the opposite side. The head was just off to his right. He walked over to the terminal and sat down. He was tired but there was work to be done. He began to go through the computer systems, easily bypassing the weak security structure that was in place. Akkans were originally civilian ships so their key files were poorly secured. Modern militarized Akkans did not have such issues but these older ones were never updated, just sold off as the newer ones came online. Soon Ryat had the communications up on his screen. He placed in a few calls through Junk's comm systems, then cleaned up his tracks. Afterwards he showered, cleaned up his clothes as best as he could, and then went to sleep in the bed. Ching Shih stood at the window of her office, looking out into the depth of space when Gerrard came in. "So what do you think of him Ms Shih?" he asked. "He's everything you said he was," she replied, "Stubborn, smart, and very confident in himself. Typical arrogant nobleman." Gerrard smiled at that comment. "He has earned that," he said, "The man has been to the depths of Shivo and returned many times. Other pirate bosses have attempted this same thing and failed. I have seen it happen." Ching humphed, then sighed. "Well, guess we will have to try something different when we get back to base," she said. She activated her comm. "Take us back to the Nexus," she ordered. A conformation came back. The massive Akkan turned and headed towards the gravwell. Upon reaching its edge it jumped out. It was in the asteroid field of the Tepist System were the attack occured. As Junk entered the gravwell four pirate battleships lay in wait. They fired thier Overcharged Ion Bolts at the single Akkan, shutting down and disrupting many of its systems. They hovered near the paralyzed vessel waiting to stop it again if necessary or take a different action. On the bridge was chaos as Ching stepped in. "Give me a status report NOW!" she shouted. "We have systems shutdown everywhere ma'am, " replied the tactical officer, "attempting to reboot as quickly as possible but we have recieved a lot of damage." "Were did those ships come from?" she asked a bit more calmly. "They were hiding behind the asteroids when we jumped in," he answered, "we never had a chance." "What are they doing now?" she queried as she sat in the captians chair. "Aside from waiting unknown," he replied. Suddenly the view screen changed from tactical to a view of Ryat's face. "They are waiting for me, just to let you know," he said. "Wha-, how, Ah Shivo!" Ching cursed, "how did you pull this off." "I always make sure I have a back door into things I sell to ones with less then stellar reputations," he said, "Plus, like I said, other pirate bosses wouldn't like you messing with the current deal that is in place. You might say its in their best interests to make sure I'm returned back." "You have everything all tied up in a little web, don't you," Ching said with a sigh. "I find that also helps when dealing with pirates," Ryat said with a thin smile. Ching sighed again in defeat. "Fine, I'll let you go," she said. "Just send me back with Gerrard in the same vessel we arrived in back to the trade port in Portage VII, my men will be waiting for me there," he said. With that his face was replaced with the tactical screen which showed the pirate battleships backing off. Both Ching and Gerrard showed up at Lord Ryat's room. "Can you excuse us for a moment Gerrard?" she asked. Gerrard nodded and stepped away as she entered the room and closed the door. Lord Ryat looked at her with curiousity. "Yes?" he asked. "You are a Pirate Lord aren't you," she said quietly. "Me?" he said defensively, "I am Lord Ryat Arnoldt, High Baron of the High Gryphons, Grand Marshal of the TEC Defense Force, not some lowlife pirate!" Ching merely looked at him. "You wouldn't be the first to use such titles to hide yourself," she said quietly and evenly. Ryat looked at her carefully, then laughed out loud with his head tilled back. "I like you," he said when he calmed down, "You are very smart. I may have much use of you in the future." "Be happy to help," she said, "for a price of course." "Of course Ching," he said, "See you around." And with that he opened the door and strode out.
Thenos was waiting as Casey’s shuttle landed. The boarding ramp lowered and Casey began to walk down it, talking to a man in mining uniform. She stopped at the edge of the ramp, gave a few more words to the man, then stepped onto the sandy panelling of the landing pad, the man returning to the shuttle’s interior. Even without his psychic abilities, could see that Casey was both stressed and tired. She noticed him, casting him a glare, and turned to talk to the ground staff member who had just arrived to officially guide Casey and Thenos to the meditation chamber. The member of staff asked Thenos and Casey to follow her.
Once they reached the inner chamber, walking past the ongoing construction of the outer walls, Casey’s expression changed. For a moment, the look that said that this was a waste of her time vanished, and was replaced by one of amazement. The stone that made the chamber was mesmerising. The woman who had been the guide coughed politely, and Casey snapped back to her earlier look. Thenos walked past her to the doors of the meditation chamber, and placed a hand on it. With a single thought he unlocked the doors, and they began to slide open, propelled by the limited telekinetic abilities of the chamber itself. Turning around, Thenos motioned for Casey to enter, and followed after her. Only when the doors closed fully did Casey relax, allowing her scowl to depart her face.
“Thanks,” she said, “I mean, for this. It feels so quiet.”
“That’s because the presence of the other minds in the Unity can’t reach you here,” Thenos explained. There was a pause, then Casey began to speak again.
“It wasn’t easy when you left,” Casey said, “it got worse. You weren’t there to stand up for me. While the rest of our year went to find their place in the Unity, I got left behind. They didn’t even trust me to look after the archives! That’s how useless they thought I was!”
“I’m sorr-”
“Yes, I’m sure you are. You flew off and became a Knight in the fleet. I ended up in the fleet too, eventually. They called up crews for suicidal scout missions. They filled crews with criminals and sent them to die. You know what? I was put in the same category as murderers and terrorists, just because I didn’t strive to kill as many enemy civilians as possible. That’s right, I heard about what you did at Tibra. Bombed the planet till nothing remained. I put so much faith in you. You promised to strive for peace, and that was how you honoured your vow? I thought that you had cared about me, about what I thought!”
“Look, I-”
Casey continued, too upset to stop, “I thought that I could forget out here with this company. Here I could be free, and try not to remember all the promises you failed to keep, but no. The old circus comes to town. The lackeys of the High Psintegrat come and uproot my life again. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mick turned up now an-”
“He’s dead,” Thenos interrupted.
“Mick? No, he said he was going to become an ambassador.”
“He did. The TEC blew his ship to pieces. Oh, and Wilkes is dead. Carthy too. Eva, Tyrell, Hendell, Ella are all dead, along with most of the others. I think that there’s three other survivors from our year at Arla.”
“But, most of them went for planetside, peaceful jobs,” protested Casey.
“Yes, and the TEC nuked them into dust from orbit. Ironic really, that we both went for the most dangerous jobs, and survived. I went into being a ship assassin. My squad died, my old friends died. Come to think of it, the majority of people I’ve been close friends with have all died, and you know what? I don’t think it’s fair. Why did I survive? Why me, who went on to become a captain?” and Thenos began to speak louder, “Why me, who killed so many innocents at Tibra? Why me? What did I do to deserve life more than them?”
There was a pause, as both Thenos and Casey looked embarrassed about their earlier rants.
“I’m sorry,” Thenos said, “it’s not your fault. At Tibra… I felt so angry. I’d just returned from New Carthage, where the Carthage Massacre occurred. So many of our own died then, and I felt like I needed revenge. Only afterwards did I think, did I realise that it was in no way the fault of the civilians. I am so sorry about leaving you behind as well. I had no idea about the suicide mission thing. I thought that you’d be treated decently, and that I could come back to Arla.”
“I’m sorry too,” Casey said, “that I got angry with you. It’s just been so long, and I thought that you’d just forgotten everything I’d said to you on Arla. Thank you for coming back after the entire incident with the conference. I know I acted like an idiot back there.”
“Hey,” Thenos said, smiling in an attempt to lighten up the conversation, “that’s behind us now. So's the High Psintegrat. To cut a long story short, The Collective and I are all outcasts from the Unity. I think that a good plan now would be for me to show you how to test this thing like I was meant to be doing, then we should probably find somewhere where we can get a drink or something. I can fill you in on the details of how I got here then.”
“Yeah,” said Casey, smiling back after looking surprised that Thenos was no longer part of the Unity, “that’s probably the best thing to do. So, how do you do the testing then?”
“Well, you just reach out with your mind. Check the walls of the chamber to see if your mind can slip through. It’s quickest to just fill the chamber with your presence and see if any leaks out. Just stretch out with your…”
Casey, who had closed her eyes in preparation of using her psychic abilities, opened her eyes to see why Thenos was silent now. He was standing motionless, eyes shut. He had discovered the secret of the meditation chamber, and his mind was far beyond his body.

To Be Continued...
Xenon was in the bridge of the Osiris. He had heard some intresting news, mostly a communication sent from Ryat to his men, telling them that he had been captured, but that he would be retuned back. They just had to meet him there. He had also recently recevied news that his techs on the kostra cannon had connected White impulse the best they could to the cannon, and they where ready to try it out. Xenon had been looking over where they could shoot the cannon, as test so they could find out just what it did. They could shoot it at kyrene, but with the effects being unknown, they really needed some place where they could watch it, and still be safe. Xenon's mind quickly settled on a location.
" Communication, send a message to Ryat, Carbon, and Lord J'rah. We need premission to fire the cannon"
" Yes sir, what should i tell them the target is?"
Xenon got up from his chair moving to exit the bridge, "The Underworld"
(Personal / DS)****Computer Monitor****Data Burst TransmissionEncryption?= //Military//Recipient?= //Classified//Message?= Admiral, just got back and found my fleet pretty battered. Pirates in Mercevia are pretty strong, they openly engaged capital ships and tenatively won. Got any intel you're willing to share?Send?=YMessage Sent************************ Roesh sends his message and then hops on a transport to Finley 2 to get some projects checked off the list. When he arrives, he see's that Todd already has a platform set up and ready to fire at hunks of metal just floating in space. Just before he lands at the military research lab, the gun mounted on the platform opens fire and shoots a projectile hard and fast at a metal slab and punches a hole right through it. Roesh gets on an open comms channel and says, "I hope that was a weapons test and not an armor test..." Todd answers, "It is now." "What was it before?" "Iunno... Just pitting two things against each other to see what wins." Roesh sighs as the transport docks with the station. One of the crewmen aboard the transport says as he opens the hatch, "Just so you know sir, Ms. Sullivan has ordered all civillian ships to be retrofitted with better armor since fleet got mangled." "Yeah I figured as much. Not gonna happen yet..." Roesh says as he exits. Roesh walks around the station until he finds Todd with a bunch of engineers and scientists in an open lab that has a large airlock to the outside. They're reviewing everything they have on the weapon and writing technical specs and performance data. Once Todd is happy with what he sees, he signs all of the paperwork making it officially ready to be installed. "New Gauss cannon?" Roesh asks as he walked up. Todd answes, "No, we basically just took what we knew and made it better. We modified the Ferro-Uranite rounds that we've been using and made them stronger so they have more stopping power, adjusted the rifling and modified the system a little to give us better ballistic qualities as the rounds exit the gun, and reworked the formula for the propellant cartridges improving the speed at which the shells get fired off at without compromising the integrity of the firing chamber. We should be seeing a fifty to sixty percent increase in damage output from these babies." "Good stuff, I want to work on a few things to speed this process up a bit." "What did you have in mind?" "Nothing. You have a stack of papers, just give me a few and I'll go across the hall with some people who worked on it and we'll give it a few tests." "Okay, what ever you say boss. Actually here." Todd hands him a couple of packets of papers. "These are actually related to this. The Gauss platform itself is in need of upgrades so before we start dropping them down in the system. Platforms don't have the energy generating capacity that fleet has so we have to come up with other methods of building up the energy required to fire these things off, so here's the capacitor improvement work, and this one is to help improve their range." "I'm on it. Come with me team." Roesh says as he takes the two packets from Todd and heads out to another lab. A group of 15 follow him and begin to set up their final demonstrations. After an hour the show was ready to proceed. A research engineer starts whith his team's project. "As you know, the barrels of the gauss platform are slightly magnetic and propel the shell outward." He puts a steel cylander on one end and charges up the device. Within a few seconds the steel cylander flies off the opposite side. "This is the old system. It works with the gun to give the round a higher muzzle velocity thus allowing it to maintain it's kinetic force longer." He walks over to the cylander picks it up and puts it on his second device. "We made some changes to the rails so that now, not only do they assist in maintaining a higher muzzle velocity, but they also magnetize the Ferro-Uranite rounds making them magnetic for a short time thus allowing them to maintain their deadly force for a longer distance with better accuracy since they now sort of home in on their target." He charges up the new device and in the same amount of time the cylander flies off the railing. Only this time if flies across the room and hits a large metal target on the other side and sticks to it. Roesh comments, "You'd think this was unnecessary in the frictionless environment of space." The engineer continues, "You'd think, but we're not trying to defeat friction here. Solar winds, gravity, radiation... All these things and more have an effect on an object as it moves through space. By giving the round a magnetic quality as it's fired means we gain roughly 25% more range before these other factors begin to have an effect on it's velocity or angle. Thus we see an improved accuracy at a greater distance, and increase it's maximum firing range where we can hit what we're aimed at." "Point taken." Roesh says before turning to the second group. "What do you guys have for me?" The leader on this project steps up. "We have a simple little spark gap device set up for demonstration." He points to a cart with a large object on it with a few wires sticking out of it hooked up to spark gap device. "This is a representation of the firing relays used on the platforms currently, every time you see a spark up here, the gun fires... Since the platforms themselves cannot produce the power that fleet's reactors can, they have to use larger, more reactive capacitors. Since we don't have to follow such strict safety protocols with gauss platforms, we're free to use more volitile materials to increase the capacitors ability to store and discharge energy faster." His team activates the old set up and Roesh watches as the spark gap device fires off sparks at a regular pace. The team rolls over a larger capacitor and hooks it up and turns it on. Roesh begins to smile as the spark gap fires off sparks at a faster pace. The team leader continues, "So as you can see, same power source, same test rig, new capacitor, faster firing rate." "How much of an improvement?" Roesh asks. "For every 10 rounds the old system fires, the new one fires 13. A 30% gain in performance." "Why can't fleet use these?" "Fleet can't because they're bigger, heavier, and made with materials that when destroyed... Let's just say it's safer for people to not be as close to it as they would be on a ship." "I see. Bigger and heavier are a huge problem for fleet since they want smaller and lighter, but yes, losing people to radiation poisoning or whatever because a gun battery nearby took a direct hit would be a bad thing as well." "My thoughts exactly. Since Gauss cannon platforms only require a small crew to oversee targeting and monitor system conditions, shielding can be added to protect them. Again, not something fleet would be interested in doing." "I agree, and I like what I'm seeing from both projects. Well done. I'm signing off on both, so go find yourselves some other stuff to go work on. Roesh leaves the two teams to break down their projects and he heads off to find Todd who has relocated himself to another laboratory. When he walks in he sees that this one is set up to test out several variants of laser and beam weapons and modify them as necessary. A rather huge laboratory with lots of equipment packed in. He walks up as one of the techs is explainging to Todd what's going on. "What we did was basically set new tolerance standards for the crystals being used and added in more. The laser beam can now accept more energy sources and can focus them into one single tighter more powerful shot." "Nice." Todd says. "I read in your notes that you plan on using this same technique on the beam weapon systems." "Yes, but we haven't had the the resources to try it. We just got word from Henry a day ago that we're being given whatever we need, so at this point we really just haven't had the time. It shouldn't take as long to do that as it did on this one since we now know what to do, so given a few days we can probably have a first generation device whipped up." "Alright, so what about the other improvements here?" "Right, what we did have time to do to the beam weapons is that by putting in a flexible focusing array and rather then making everything a tight as possible, we beefed up the parts and made it so they could vibrate and withstand the new movement characteristics. The end result is rather then having a specific frequency to fire off of that can be compensated for automatically by the shield systems, it constantly changes on it's own, and a weapons control officer can change the overall frequency by adjusting the array." "Okay. Let's see these things work." A few techs jump into action, the first couple fire up the laser and after watching it shoot through a piece of steel, they flip a couple of switches adding more energy sources. The beam size adjusts and burns it's way through a few more steel plates with ease before the laser is shut off. The same type of test is performed with the beam weapon, only this time a shield generator is turned on to show that it has trouble compensating for the rapidly changing frequencies and soon, all of the plates have holes through them. Roesh speaks up, "So you guys plan on doing more?" "Yes, sir." One of the techs says. Todd adds, "They're going to apply lessons learned from the laser to the beam since the two systems are so similar, and they're going to take some of the lessons learned from the beams and apply them to the lasers to make them stronger. Should be a lot of fun to see some final results." "Yep. Good work everyone." Roesh says. "What's next on the list?" Todd replies, "Finley 4? We have three projects over there. One focused on Missile techs, another focuses on Orbital bombardment warheads, and another group working on armor. Good stuff..." "Okay, let's get going."
After a few hours that have gone by, Captain Lan has returned to the bridge with a cup of coffee, "Report" he barked, "were 2000 km from the anomaly and sensors has confirmed a phase lane reading and a very unusual wormhole sir," came Seles. "What makes it unusual Lt." said Lan, "If I'm reading this right sir, the distortions coming from the gravimetric sheer is causing the wormhole to be unstable." Lan gave Seles puzzled look and said, "and that means?" Seles finished, "the exit point could be shifting all around to unknown parts of the galaxy, sir." Lan made a wow expression on his face as he sits down in his command chair. "I guess we won't go through the wormhole then?" "No sir, I wouldn't advise it," said Seles.
"Alright, launch a hazardous navigation beacon and lets see where the phase lane will take us." "Aye sir." The captain touched the inter ship wide comm, " attention crew, standby for phase jump", Lan touched another comm channel, "Reid, are we ready?" "Yes captain, as ever," came the response. "Cameron, make the jump." Cameron spoke, "Here we go again, aye sir." As the jump drives come online, blue particles begin to dance around the ship and form a ring off the forward bow, the Minoes begans to move slowly towards the ring and slide through phase space, blue sreaks race by on the view screen. Captain Lan speaks aloud, "Where no one has gone before."
After traveling through hyperspace for almost three days, Minoes drops out into grav well of an blue giant star. "Seles, what's out there?" the captain asked. "Picking up seven planets on long range sir, possible resource asteroids too, can't tell until we get closer." Captain turns to Cameron. "Helm, distance traveled from the black hole?" "Over 4 light years, sir." "O.K. start plotting courses for this system, and get ready to pass down to alpha shift." Aye sir," came the response from different crew members. Few minutes later alpha shift came on the bridge. Captain Lan stood up to greet alpha shift and said, "Good morning, been a long twelve hours, when you take your stations, courses have been plotted for this system, standard survey recon, launch probes when needed, contact me or Lt Seles if there's a problem." "Yes sir," Lt Cmdr drake said, "get some rest captain, you need it."
"Intend too, see you in eight." "Gamma shift, you're relived." Members of gamma shift began to leave their stations as alpha begins to take over. Gamma shift loads into the lift, getting off at different decks to their quarters getting much needed rest after their ordeal thus far. Lt Cmdr Drake sits down in the command chair and says, " O.K. folks, lets get to work."
Thenos’ mind stretched until it spanned the entire Distant Stars cluster. He could feel the presence of the many minds of the sector, with some areas of space seeming to whisper. These were where the Advent resided with their open minds. Thenos couldn’t actually make out any individual minds, or any thoughts, but that made sense. His mind was spread over such a wide area that his psychic power would be also. Thenos tried to make sense of how he had come to be in this state. He had simply spread his mind throughout the meditation chamber, and then suddenly… this happened. Thenos heard a whisper of thought, and then felt a presence that also seemed to span all of Distant Stars. Who was this? How did they end up like this as well? Thenos could now hear vague individual words amongst the train of this other mind’s thought.
… Prophet… Nine… Thenos… a prophet? Thenos listened closer, Centrepiece… complete… three days… Portage… White Matter… Prophet of the Nine… can’t realise… identity…
Just as Thenos began to figure out how to listen and pick up more of the thoughts, the whispers stopped. Thenos felt a searing pain as the other mind brutally lashed out at his. However, Thenos rallied, striking back. To his surprise, his attack cut through the opponent’s psychic barriers, and he suddenly felt that his mind was now inside the mind of his opponent. Before he could act, Thenos felt a pressure on his psychic presence, as if it was being pulled along. His mind was dragged through the opponent’s mind, and images began to appear to Thenos. A strange orbital structure, a map with a label saying “Portage,” and another map with a ring around a system, labelled “Centrepiece.” A new image appeared, showing a strange shape. It was an octagon with triangles on each edge, like a stylised star. Finally, a solid strand of speech was drawn from the other mind without Thenos’ input.
“Yes, it’s Thenos,” came the voice of the High Psintegrat, “and we must get rid of him before he finds out. He can’t find the Centrepiece or the Psi Nexus, or he will discover who he is. The Prophet of the Nine can’t disrupt my plans.”
With this, the other mind withdrew. After a brief pause, so did Thenos, mentally exhausted by this battle of wills. The Prophet of the Nine? What was the Nine anyway?
Thenos’ eyes opened to see Casey’s puzzled expression.
“What were you about to say?” she asked.
“What?” Thenos asked.
“You were saying something, then you trailed off. Your mind go blank or something?”
“Oh,” Thenos said, realising that not much time could have passed if Casey wasn’t too concerned, “yeah, I just went blank. The chamber works okay, I’d say.”
“Really? Great. So, about that drink, I know a good place that was opened when we first set up the colony. Want to try there?”
“Yeah, sure. Lead the way,” said Thenos. He wouldn’t mention the occurrence in the meditation chamber, as he wouldn’t expect someone else to understand what had happened if he hadn’t. Prophet of the Nine? Him? Questions that Thenos feared would be difficult to answer.
The High Psintegrat’s eyes also opened in the dark of her meditation chamber. So, now Thenos knew. She had been a fool to leave her mind so open to attack. She would have to be careful. The way that Thenos had scythed through her mind to retrieve the information about the prophecy was disturbing. He must have known what he was looking for. She would make sure to eliminate him once the Centrepiece was ready to be fired at Portage. There wasn’t much time left for the TEC fleet. Once the ashes had fallen at Portage, the High Psintegrat could then take the White Matter, the third piece of the Nine. All was proceeding as planned.
(Personal / DS) Casey leads Thenos to the opposite side of the colony. Clearly a part that was hastily slapped together and had more function then form. When she got to a smashed up storefront with lots of loud music and commotion coming from inside she stopped for a second. Shaking her head with a slight look of disappointment she turns and walks in through the door. Thenos follows her in and sees a run down tavern full of rough looking people. Most sitting at tables, a bunch fighing off to one side and a bar at the far end. A sight reminiscent of an old western saloon. Casey walks off to the side leaving Thenos standing there staring and accesses a data terminal. After punching in some commands she sees the information she wants to. "Is it always like this?" Thenos sends to her mind. She walks back over to him and replies verbally, "Ancient Everthans used the term, 'Cowboy up' in situations like this." "And that's supposed to mean?" he asks. Casey smiles and pushes a guy out of his chair and uses it as a step to stand on top of a table. She receives a few whistles from those that notice the maneuver. She draws a gun she had hidden in a side pocket of her pants and shoots one shot into the ceiling to get everyone's attention. Thenos' eyes widen having never seen this type of behavior before. "HEY BOYS!" she yells out and receives several hoots and whistles in response. "I just looked at our numbers for the past week and we're kicking our quota's ass. Next round is on me!" The room erupts with cheers and she jumps down from the table and scouts out an empty one near the middle. She has a seat and Thenos sits opposite her. The bartender walks over with a bottle of whiskey and a couple of glasses. Casey pours a little into each. "So you come here often?" Thenos asks. "You're gonna want to kind of toss the liquid to the back of your mouth and swallow it fast." Casey replies. "Why?" he asks. Casey does what she said and Thenos does the same. His eyes narrow as the burning sensation in his throat grows to almost painful levels and subsides. Casey sits there smiling before sending him the thought, "Because if you go slow you won't have a throat to breathe with." Thenos sends back, "That's some really strong stuff." She laughs audibly before refilling the glasses and saying, "It's a batch our friendly bartender here made from his own stills several years back. The riff-raff seems to enjoy it." "Back to my other question." Thenos says. "You come here often?" "Yeah, why?" "It just doesn't seem like a place we Advent would be very well accepted in." "I'm not a soldier. I don't hang out in places where rank matters like Tim would. I'm not a politician, so I don't hang out in high class aristocrat places where people talk out their asses telling you one thing and do another. That's Henry's unfortunate duty... And he hates it. I'm not the adventuresome type like Todd, nor am I a troublemaker like Roesh, so I don't hang out in those seedy little underground bars where you can meet the scum of the universe. I hang out here. Where the hard working people come to blow off steam and unwind." A few patrons nearby lift their glasses to toast the sentiment. She continues after throwing back another drink. "If the first one got to you, don't bother with a second one." Thenos shrugs and tosses the second drink back. Expecting the burn this time he makes less of a visible expression. "It's not bad." he says as he grabs the bottle and pours another glass for them both. "I hope you're not trying to get me drunk." she says. "How much does one of these bottles cost?" "Iunno..." "Who pays for it then?" "Expense account. We all get one." "Nice." "Isn't it?" "Maybe I should apply for a job in your fleet..." "You'd have to start off at the bottom, and your skills would mean nothing." Thenos leads the way with the third drink, only this time he can't hide the burning sensation. Casey follows suit and can't hide the burn either. "I think we should switch to something else for a little bit." Thenos says. Casey giggles before standing up and heading over to the bar. She says a few things to the bartender who just shakes his head yes a few times and pours a couple of large glasses and hands them to her. She walks them back to their table and sits down handing one to Thenos. "And these are?" he asks. "Drinks that aren't as strong." she answers with. "You've changed." "No I haven't." "Yes you have." "I am who I would have been back home if I was allowed to be who I am today back then." Thenos sits for a second deciphering what was just said. "So you've changed. At least on your outwardly personality." "Whatever." Casey says as little baskets of food are set down in front of them. "How did you get here? I mean, I know HOW, but not how. If you want to come back with me..." Casey munches on some of the food while thinking of an appropriate response. "I'm not going anywhere. I like these people. They dig and get dirty and they do it because they love to do it. There's a lot of pride in what we do. Personal backgrounds are irrelevant. The only thing that matters is who can find and extract the largest veins of crystals and ore, or score the biggest salvage site. It's hard work, there's loud machines and equipment everywhere, most people avoid those areas of space, and I got where I am because of what I know... Things I was told were pointless to learn about. Things I was told would hold me back, these same things are the very things that have put me so far ahead here." "It suits you. Doing the things others can't or won't do. That is a quality I remember about you from long ago. But all I'm saying is that..." Casey cuts him off, "Roesh and Henry treat me real well, better then any counselor or instructor ever did. Todd... Well, his heart's in the right place most of the time. And Tim. This doesn't leave this table... Timmy says I'm his favorite out of all of the board members and he lets me take out fighter strike craft when everyone is too busy to notice and I get to do some high performance flying and target shooting. And if that wasn't enough, an added bonus is no nagging little witch in your head all of the time." "Now I'll drink to that!" Thenos says as he lifts his glass in the air, prompting Casey to lift hers and tap his. "So when are you leaving?" she asks. "Trying to get rid of me?" "Yes." she says with an evil grin on her face. "Well I was going to leave after this, but now that I've seen the rough places you like to hang out at, I may have to stay." "And what? Protect me? I carry a gun. I can fight." Thenos scans her mind for a split second, "You lost your last one." She throws some chips at him, "Get out of my head, jerk." Thenos just smiles promting her to throw the whole basket at him. "I've been away for too long." he says. "The council is probably driving my commanders crazy by now." "Shrews." Casey mumbles. Thenos picks up one of the chips stuck to his shirt and flicks it at Casey. "You need to go." she says. "I will. After We eat." Thenos replies. "Garçon! The main course please.... Hurry!" About a minute later one of the workers brings them their food in a rushed manner. Less care then usual was used in the presentation of the meal, so it looks more slapped together then anything. The rowdy atmosphere of the place doesn't affect their meal much, and when their plates were clean, Casey grabs the bottle of Whiskey and heads for the door. Thenos, pauses for a second thinking about the bill before remembering the expense account. He leaves a tip behind and heads for the door as well. Outside, Casey is putting in a pick up call with a transport. Once she has the details she heads for the nearest landing pad. After a brief walk they arrive just in time to see a shuttle land. "There's your ride." Casey says. "It'll take you to the trade port in orbit which will then transfer you to another ship that will take you to the trade port that services... 'Rebirth?' Who comes up with these names...." Thenos answers, "Shrews." Casey laughs and hands him the bottle of whiskey. "Have a nice flight home." Thenos boards the shuttle and as soon as he's in the hatch, he turns around to say something but sees that Casey isn't there anymore. He shakes his head and is shown to a his seat by an attendant. The shuttle lifts off and Thenos starts his journey home.
Okay. I'll go again.
(Personal / DS) When Roesh and Todd arrive at Finley 4, they decide to head over to their missile improvement program first. Docking with the station, they're greeted by some staff who ushers them to a conference room. When they arrive they see the project leads for all three stations are present. Roesh and Todd look at each other, shrug, enter the conference room and sit down. "I thought we were going to see some good things today..." Roesh starts off with. "We wish we could show you something, but right now we don't have anything other then theories." One project leader says. "We haven't received enough supplies to even bother with anything besides basic tests." another says. Todd looks at Roesh, "And we were doing so well at Finley 2." The first project lead laughs a little, "Those jokers? They're not doing anything new, just refining other people's work. Out here, we're trying to do things differently." "Well then... Don't keep us in suspense, what do you have so far?" Todd asks. A Third project leader stands up and walks over to a screen, "We've all been kind of working together since there just hasn't been any real resource support, but what we have come up with is new sensors and guidance programming for our current missile variants. Since we had a lot of people sitting around with nothing to work with, we basically went the reprogram out current systems route. We tweaked our avionics to allow them better movement when fired so they have a better chance at hitting fast moving targets that are constantly changing directions. In addition to that we changed the design of the components inside and better shielded the electronics so that they have a higher success rate in surviving enemy defenses and not being affected by their electronic countermeasures. In limited testing, we've seen more missiles hit home which means, we should be seeing more damage done out in the field." The screen flicks through several test videos. The first project leader steps up and replaces the third one at the screen, "Since we now know that our missiles should survive longer we've theorized that we can change our propellant formulas and keep them active longer. It would be stupid on our part to not take advantage of this extra survivability and not increase the range." A few formulas and compounds pop up on the screen. "We feel that if we can modify our current propellants with these new compounds, they should be able to burn longer giving us ten to twenty percent more range, maybe even more. We won't know for sure until we do some real world testing." The second project lead replaces the first by the screen. "And since we have missiles that are surviving longer and flying further, and we're playing with chemistry, my team has been working on improving how well they explode when they make contact. Again, since we've had limited resources, we've only seen limited success, however, this is buffered by the fact that not only are we improving missiles, but bombardment ordinance is taking advantage of these upgrades, and it can even be applied to our proximity mines." Roesh sits up in his chair, "So it seems as though even though you've had nothing to work with, you all still managed to get a lot done." "In theory." The third project lead states. The second lead continues, "Yes, everything is still considered theory until we've had a chance to fully test it out and set up our final demonstrations for you guys to sign off on. Give us a week or two and if things go well, we should have some fireworks for you guys to watch." Todd speaks up, "So who's working on the armor projects?" The first project lead answers, "No one. We've got nothing to shoot with and nothing to fire at. We have been collecting samples from fleet's last fight from the repair bays so we can see how the armor plating is being affected on the molecular level, but we're thinking it would be better to improve out refining methods first, maybe redesign the ships adding more plating in key areas and building stronger bulk heads. Studying the damage on a molecular level is going to take a lot of time. Building better ships can be done right now once a team identifies what places would serve best for reinforcing." "Back up... Improve our refining methods? What's wrong with them?" Roesh asks. The first leader continues, "Nothing is wrong with them, but much like you take raw iron ore and refine it to get iron, continue to refine it to get steel, add in some more materials and refine it further to get a steel alloy... Same principle. If we improve our methods, maybe we get a better material as a result." "I see where you're coming from." Todd states. "I've also noticed that current damage control practices are a little outdated. Maybe if we have Tim put a team together while fleet is sitting around and have them just focus on damage control practices, maybe we can get more life out of our ships under fire." "I'll talk to Tim about that." Roesh says. "If we give you guys unlimited resources will we see results in a week?" The third project lead answers, "We have design plans in place, labs already set up ready to go, tests planned to evaluate the upgrades effectiveness... You'll start seeing results tomorrow if we get supplies today." Roesh mutters to Todd, "We would probably piss everyone off if we did that." Todd mutters back, "Not anyone here, and fleet would love us." Roesh continues, "Good point, and I like hanging out with fleet." Todd continues, "Me too. Plus you know Tim isn't going to sit around too much longer before asking us to pump out a bunch of ships so he can get some revenge. Improving ship designs is a good way to stall him." Roesh speaks up, "Okay, so you guys are going to get everything you need. Just ask and it's yours. I'm out of here to go do a couple things real quick." Todd says, "I'll stay here and requisition the supplies myself so no one complains." The three project leaders visibly look excited after hearing Todd's comment and they begin talking between themselves discussing what they're going to need right away. Todd puts in a move order to have his office relocated to the research station he's on now. Roesh leaves the conference room and heads for a shuttle dock so he can head to where ever Tim is at once he's located. Once on the shuttle he's told Tim is on the fourth moon and awaiting his arrival. Roesh put's in a call to Henry. "Hey buddy, just want to let you know you're going to get some complaints." "Why is that?" "we're robbing the rich to feed the poor. I've given the missile and armor projects my permission to use whatever they need to finish their work and Todd is staying behind to make sure it happens." "You may be surprised to know that I've already talked with Molly about our supply issues and she's fine with it." "Really? How'd that go?" "Fairly easy. She's got a good analytical head on her shoulders so I think she understands the importance to reassign priorities based on needs. Our real problem is probably going to be Riona." "Is it just me or does she just not understand that her position isn't as important as she thinks it is?" "I can understand where she's coming from. Unlike you, I've spent most of my time the past few years dealing with planet issues. It's very stressful work trying to please millions of people." "Yeah, well it's even more stressful dealing with a gun pointed at your head." "Yeah, I know. I'll have a chat with her about her attitude." "Remind her that she can be replaced." "I'll talk with her." "I'm going to talk with Tim right now about fleet damage control practices, when the ships in dry dock are ready, and their crews return, have them head over here. We'll use them and their recent experiences to start making changes." "I'll let them know." Henry says as he cuts his side of the comm and get's back to work. Roesh lands at the space port on the moon and is immediately greeted by Tim who takes him on a tour of the place like he gave himself when he first arrived. Roesh brings him up to date on the research projects he just saw and what they have planned. Tim doesn't say it, but his general attitude improves indicating that he's happy with all of the support his division has been and is going to receive.
Captain's Log:
After two uneventful weeks, we have came across a multitude of different planets and new stellar types not seen in our part of the galaxy, from magnetars to oceanic, to the most beautiful planet we just called "paradise", I was tempted to give shore leave, but because of unknown contagions possible on the planets we come across it is forbidden.
Were strictly mapmakers and pathfinders, the other heavier research vessels come in to make that determination. Science Officer Seles has given the black hole we came across a name, "Bamntuh". Where do they come up with these names is beyond me. Also, we have been coming across strange signals, interment at best, could be natural stellar noise in this region of space, with the black hole within five light years away and the magnetar within two, our long range sensors and communications have been distorted, dropping extra relay boosters has compensated for the excess gamma radiation but our readings are still weak. Right now were heading to a group of stars that look very promising, by my reckoning, once the main vessels get by the black hole, this will be one of the most profitable routes I and my crew has ever discovered.
