Its us again! Here to bring you yet another exciting community topic!!!!
This topic is dedicated to any stories, lore, epic poems, novels, Role Playing...anything your heart desires to share!!!
We are always up for a good read and are excited to see what you all create from DS.
We will be featuring hopefully some neat post in this orginal post every so often. Maybe be something we liked or we though it need attention! So, aim your Ogrov at that writers block and get your fingers typing!
There aren't any rules, but we do have some guidelines to follow so that we all can participate and enjoy ourselves.-There is really no limit on what you post just as long as it is Distant Stars related.-Most members are participating in a single large story with the occasional side story or two. While this thread is certainly not limited to just that story, for the benefit of all readers and participants, please begin your post with how we're supposed to handle it. (Personal Story) (DS RP) (Trader Space) Examples of this can be found all throughout the thread or by looking at this post. https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/21/#2596003 This will help us all out by letting us know if you're trying to set yourself up to join the main lore, if you plan on just telling your own story, or if you're just writing lullabies for children to sing before they go to bed.-While we don't expect you to 'Play the game' in your stories, we do ask that you keep any liberties that you take be grounded within the game. For example: Talking about your space marines invading another ship is not something the game covers, so feel free to be inventive on how it would happen. However, carrying point singularity rifles that open up little black holes is beyond the scope of the game and will not be allowed. Soldiers with phasic armor that prevents them from being wounded let alone even being hit, while being relevant to the technology in the game would also not be allowed. The point is to be fair to the other people. We encourage you to ask yourselves, would this work in the game, and how would I feel if someone used this on me? If You feel strongly that it would work and you'd be okay with it being used against you, then by all means, use it. Fantasy posting, dream sequences, and April Fool's postings are of course, immune from this guideline.-We highly encourage you to message other members for help or advice. There is a TeamSpeak channel that is frequently used by the regulars to talk issues out or just shoot the breeze behind the scenes. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of these resources. Also, 'regulars' may send you messages with suggestions, concerns, or advice. It's nothing personal, so please do not be offended, they're just trying to help keep the lore consistent within these guidelines. If there's any doubt at all about anything, just message one of the people who you see posting a lot. If they don't know, they'll pass your message along to someone who does or tell you who you need to talk to.-It is also highly recommended that you message other RPers before posting anything involving their stuff. If you don't, you're likely going to find all of DS rising up against you.-In an effort to reduce clutter, we're asking that Out Of Character (OOC) commenting be either sent to the individual for whom it is intended by using the private message feature, or take it to another thread. https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/366762 is a thread frequented by many of the lore writers and random comment posting about anything under the sun is highly encouraged there as well in an attempt to get the thread locked. Enjoy.

We ask that you look through these to help you better understand the region.-About Distant Stars- https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/11/#2532381This post will give you a lot of basic information on what the region of space is like, how to get there, and who is there waiting for you.-Distant Stars Maps- https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/23/#2604760This post provides you with a quick look at the region and provides you with a download link where you can get yourself a copy of the posted maps in their unreduced forms. They're very helpful when trying to figure out where to go and who you're likely going to run into when you get there. Maps of individual systems are posted throughout the thread. They're generally posted by the first person to explore the system. If you don't know if a system has been explored or not or want to see a map of a system that has been explored, ask around via PM or TeamSpeak. Someone will point you to the place.-Character Biographies- https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/11/#2532380This post is a general collection of the main RP characters whom you will likely have contact with. We ask that all people posting in the main lore post their main character(s) bio as soon as possible so that the rest of us have a little background on who your character is, how they like to fight, where do they come from, and why they're there. Read the existing bios for examples on what we're looking for.

Lord Ryat and Rear Admiral Usyma sat in his room office going over the after battle reports. His regular office was vented out to space. Ryat sat at a sloppy angle in his chair with a seemingly idle stare at his computer screen. Usyma was reading out loud the reports that had come in. "Admiral Alexander has got planet Portage IV under is control and has began build up of supply depots," she said, "Roesh has put in a request to use the phase gate to begin moving supplies thru to both him and us. Usual rates, he says." "Okay," Ryat murmered as his stare became a little more fixed on the screen in front of him. "Lord J'rah reports all resistance as stopped and almost all humans that want to leave are almost gone. He reports almost half will be staying and helping in the rebuilding process," she continued. "Mmmm, thats good." he said absent mindedly. "He also says that his and Xenon's top scientist and engineers have arrived and are beginning to work on the White Impulse and Kostura Cannon project." she added. Ryat merely grunted as he leaned forward placing his elbows on his desk, proping his hands under his chin and looked more intently at the computer screen. "Carbon reports full security sweep is complete and defenses are being implaced," she said while looking at him with her head at an angle. This time nothing came from Ryat as he worked his keyboard and peering closely at the screen. "The Advent and the Vasari have united together to take us over," she said loudly. Still no response. "Ryat dear," she said quietly. Ryat ignored her. "RYAT!" she shouted as she slammed her hand on the table between them. Ryat jumped in his seat and glared at her. "What!?" he said exasperated. "Have you even been listening to me?" she asked. "Yeah, something about Alexander taking Portage IV," he said, "thats good news." Usyma shakes her head. "What has got your interest?" she asked. "Oh, sorry," he said, "the White Impulse artifact and the Sun Beam artifact thats on Kyrene IV. There is something unusual about them." "Oh?" she said as she slid her chair around next to his to see the screeen. '"Yes, most of the artifacts we have been finding have been relatively easy to understand and apply," he explained. "Further they have no similaries at all with each other beyond their age. But, these two are different. They both are mysterious, require massive amounts of research to even begin to understand, much less found out what they can do. Second, they both, it seems, require a catalyst to work. Further they bear these strange marks that are both similar though we can't even begin to understand them. And finally, they both have a connection type point. Or rather White Impulse has one, the one we use to attach to a cannon like the Kostura or Novalith. The Sun Beam has eight, each with a different set of markings." "And this one here," Usyma said pointing at a connection point on the Sun Beam, "is the same as the one on White Impulse." "Which means that these two artifacts are part of a greater artifact," he said, "With seven more out there to find." "But what do that artifact do?" she wondered out loud. "Considering the power of each individual piece probably something very nasty," he mused. "We can't allow this to fall into the wrong hands." "Agreed," Usyma said quietly. The noise and mess on the lab station orbiting Portage VII was intense. It rattled Lord J'rahs ear membranes making him very uncomfortable as he and his retinue crossed the area heading towards the hopefully soundproof office. Upon entering the office and with the door closed, he was relieved to find that is was. Sort of. Inside were several human and vasari techs discussing loudly each ones point, sometimes almost to the point of yelling. And it didn't matter if the target was vasari or human. He made a high pitched hiss noise that cut through the discussions and got everyones attention. "I understand that there has been a breakthrough with the White Impulse and the Kostura Cannon?" he said after everyone settled down. "Ah yes, my lord," began a human, whom J'rah assumed was the leader, "Mind you its only theory, we still have to test it. But from what we have been able to piece together from its effects through the Novalith and from what we understand the Kostura to do. We believe that it would turn the targeted gravwell into a massive plasma storm that, in its initial blast, would destroy not paralyze any and all ships in the gravwell and render the planet uninhabitable. It would retain the Kostura Cannon's ability to open a phase node, we believe to allow any ships to be able to jump in. They should no be affected by the plasma storm so the gravwell will be safe to enter after the initial shot. But we would like to test this out. Do you have any gravwells we can by any chance use as a target?" Lord J'rah scratched his lower facial structure in thought. "There is a dead asteriod called Portage V that we could target." he said, "Though I would like, and I'm sure Lord Ryat would agree with me, to take Portage VI first to be able to observe as much as possible the effects of the White Impulse with the Kostura Cannon." "Very good my Lord," a Vasari said, most likely to cocaptian of the human/vasari tech team, "We should soon have it ready with the week." "Excellent, keep me posted," Lord J'rah said. He then exited the now quiet office and into the racket outside.
(Personal / DS) Continuing on to the outer reaches of the Mercevica Nebula, ever closer to the source of the energy signal, Roesh, Casey, Todd, and the crew of the Kodiak cruiser come across a dark planet. They maneuver to a low orbit over it, only to discover the readings suddenly stop. "Hey boss, that's wierd." Casey mutters. "They went away?" Roesh asks, looking over her shoulder. "Yeah." she answers. "Well all that proves is that there's something here." Todd adds. They maintain a low and slow orbit running minimal power themselves, hoping to catch a glimps of the reading again so they can pinpoint it's location. Roughly an hour passes before the passive scanners pick up readings of other ships jumping into the well. Knowing they've been spotted, they power up and move away from the planet. In their sights approaching at a high rate of speed are two pirate Corsairs. "Are we attacking or are we running?" the captain asks. Roesh takes a few seconds to contemplate the possibilities before finally answering, "We're doing both." "Aye sir." the captain says before yelling orders to his crews, "All stations prepare for battle! On my mark, open fire and engage overdrive!" Todd yells, "I'm headed to engineering!" and bolts from the room. Casey sits down with a few tactical officers to start figuring out ways they can take advantage of the planet and surrounding system to help even the odds. "Helmsman, full speed ahead! All batteries, pick a target and open fire! Engineering, engage the afterburners!" the captain barks out. They throttle up to full speed and blast their way past letting their shields take the first volley of enemy fire. Turning back around while maintaining their speed, they make a wide arc that allows them to line up on the pirates taking away their side by side firing angle. Temporarily evening the odds, the crew of the Kodiak open up with their heavy autocannons again, peppering the front of the lead corsair. It's shields maintain a good bubble absorbing all of the damage. Passing at a high rate of speed again, the kodiak makes another wide angle arc, again lining up their opposition taking away the side be side firing angle. Like last time, they open up with full fire, the lead corsair takes it's hits, returns fire, then pulls away beginning it's turn early, allowing the chase corsair to take it's shots. "They changed their tactics." the captain muses. "So, we'll just change ours." Roesh responds with. This time, not being able to line the two corsairs up, the kodiak goes solely after the lead corsair, leaving their backside exposed, but without worry since the kodiak never stops moving giving the second corsair time to try to pull around into flanking position. Continuing the jousting maneuvers with the lead corsair, they once again fire on each other dropping each other's shields to practically nothing. "If this keeps up, the second corsair out there will have us for breakfast." Roesh Comments. "I agree." the captains states. "Tactical, give us something good." "Aye sir." comes the reply. As the kodiak flies on past, the two pirate corsairs break with their patterns and trade assignments, forcing the Kodiak to engage the shielded one with each pass. A tactical officer finally reports, "Circle close the planet rather then making short passes. After enough distance is gained, break orbit once more and charge ahead with afterburner assist to the phase lane. When we get to the other side, we can turn around and as soon as they jump in, we can fire as we pass them and jump before they can turn around and line up more shots on us. If they jump paired up, it'll slow them down giving us time to repair and recharge our shields each pass. If they jump in separate, then we can keep on hitting one at a time." The captain thinks for a second, "I like it, and each time we jump to the star our antimatter gets a boost in recharging as well. Helmsman, next pass head for the planet and circle it." The Kodiak circles close to the planet, buying themselves time by not allowing the corsairs to line up a shot, when they line up on the phase lane, they break orbit and fire the afterburners once again to put some real distance between themselves and the enemy. They jump back to the star and turn around waiting for the pirates to give chase. Having more time then they expected, Todd is able to lead the damage control efforts in restoring some of the shield's power. The two Corsairs jump into the star's well, only to be surprised by the waiting Kodiak, who immediately opens fire on the one that has close to no shielding left. When the Kodiak's shields drop, they charge past the corsairs and before they can turn around to fire, the Kodiak makes the jump again, resuming the jousting style of hit and run attacking via the phase lane. Once on the other side the Kodiak spins around and waits for the corsairs to jump into the well as a pair again before charging the lane while firing. The tactic remains the same until the lead corsair is eventually destroyed. Cheers go out across the bridge. "Keep it down, we haven't won yet. All we've done is even the odds." the captain barks out. The second corsair, not wishing the same fate gives up the phase lane chase and takes up a more defensive posture near the dark planet. "Captain, it looks like they're giving up the fight. We'll have to come back with an exploratory force and see what's on the planet in a more proper fashion." Roesh says. "Aye sir." the captain replies. "Helmsman, take us home." The kodiak jumps from the planet back to the star, and from the star back to the Finley system. Roesh orders the ship back to Finley 2 for repairs and to give the crew some down time to relax after a well fought battle.

Fleet Admiral Draakjacht has Captain Siegel put out a deep space transmission to have Roesh of the Roesh Free Traders contact him as soon as is possible. The broadcast centers scattered all through the Finley system all pick up the transmission, and more importantly, the data hidden inside the transmission that pinpoint's its origins, allowing them to set up a real time conversation on a secure channel. Henry, who is familiar with the previous deal that was made, answers the call. Although many of the other fleets, and the Roesh Free Traders themselves, are equipped with visual communications, the Lions are not, leaving Henry to settle for vocals alone.
"This is Captain Siegel of David's Lions. You are Roesh I presume?"
"No, I'm Henry, but Roesh and I have been business partners since before business was even an option for us." Captain Seigel nods after receiving the new information. Henry continues, "Roesh has just returned from having a minor scrape with some hostile ships, so he's unavailable until medical has had a chance to evaluate him."
"Are you authorized to make agreements in his absence?"
"My friend, my name may not be on the side of the ships, but I assure you, no deal is official without my signature, even the deals that Roesh make ultimately need my approval if they're to be actual contracts rather then just a quick bartering of goods."
"Well, in that case, I'm happy to be talking to exactly the person I need to be talking to. We've just recently settled in if you will, and we're in somewhat of desparate need of supplies for our fleet as well as processed building materials to get things up and running here quickly."
"I understand, we were in that position not too long ago as I'm sure you are aware."
"Indeed, so if it's possible, we're requesting that you come out our way and help evaluate what would be most needed, and of course, make any contract that needs to be made."
"Well I can't leave since I'm busy coordinating efforts here demanding my attention, but let me give you an alternative. He's new to our company, and I have full confidence in him that he's taken the time to learn as much as he could as quickly as possible. His name is Jacob Duffy. He'll be the one to head over there and work out the details and arrange any contracts needed."
"Very well, how soon shall we be expecting him?"
"I can see to it that he leaves right away, all we'd need from you is a secure way to get to you."
"That can be arranged, we'll transmit the data on what you need to do right now."
The conversation ends with the reception of how to get to the David's Lions. Henry informs Jacob that he needs to leave right away and to do so on one of the capital ships. Jacob refuses and opts to head over on a trade ship instead citing that he's a businessman, not a military man and is much more comfortable on a civilian ship. Henry allows it this time since there's no time to argue the point and instead briefs him on the chat he just had.
Hours pass before a trade vessel appears on the edge of the gravity well of Eras VII. Upon its arrival, a comm officer aboard the Aaron alerts Captain Siegel, "Sir, Mr. Duffy's vessel has arrived."
"Excellent," Siegel replies. "Have him board the Aaron and we'll have this supply route flowing in no time. Send him to my ready room."
Jacob Duffy's ship is routed to the Aaron where he is escorted through the vessel and through the bridge, a generally cramped and dark atmosphere, to Siegel's private room adjacent to the bridge. Once there, Siegel invites him to take a seat and offers him a drink, neither of which partake.
"Mr. Duffy, the terms are simple. We need logistic support and one planet only offers so much for thirty-one vessels. There's no tax to speak of, but we are setting up mineral extraction, which has the potential to be quite lucrative," the captain explains.
"The usual cut of forty-seven percent would be insufficient, given the lack of credit income," Jacob says.
"Correct," Captain Siegel replies. "That is why we're willing to offer sixty-five percent. Given our inability to refine much of the material and our need for ready-made modular components, the materials are better off in your hands than ours, at least that much. As long as regular supplies come in, we can have our part packaged and ready to send back with your men."
"It sounds suitable, but I understand that you have another request?"
Captain Siegel nods as he leans back in his chair, allowing it to turn a few degrees away from Jacob. "Yes. Initial construction is going to require a large shipment of supplies. In fact, we're starting from the ground up and everything is going to be funneled through the Vasari Gate, meaning large quantities broken down into small batches and sent a longer distance than would normally be required."
"That will be quite a feat," Jacob responds. "It might be a costly run. Are you willing to push your material production to meet the cost?"
"We were actually hoping that we could make an arrangement similar to our previous agreement, trading research notes for goods. It's mandatory that you be given data on how to safely use the Vasari Gate, which will be useful with any Vasari Gate you encounter, but we don't have schematics on building new gates. We do have a large variety of civil and defense technologies which might interest you," the captain answers.
"Is there anything in particular you wish to put on the table?"
"We were hoping you might find a few of our more advanced technologies of interest," Siegel replies as he pushes a small pad across the desk. Jacob looks at the pad, listing technologies such as nuclear smelting, shockwave pulverization, advance civic designs, advanced arctic colonies, phase jump disruption, and planetary shields.
Jacob considers the list for a moment before asking, "Is there perhaps anything you could add to sweeten the deal given the number of vessels commited to such a task?"
Siegel smiles, "The shiniest of the offers I've been authorized to make is advanced fire control."
At the sound of it, Jacob lifts his eyebrows and Siegel continues, "The benefit to us is that its minimally invasive. The computational advancement gives you a great ability to defend your stations, but it only makes the weapons you have more efficient. We prefer not to arm others unless there's a clear reason to do so."
"I understand," Jacob says. "The offer is quite pleasing and I think it will make my boss very happy. I do believe we have a deal. When our first vessels arrive, I hope to hear the transaction begins without a hitch. Thank you for your hospitality and generosity."
The two stand, extending hands towards one another. As they shake, Siegel says, "Thank you. The supplies will be a great boon to our men. I hope you send word back that the Lions appreciate your assistance and are thankful for your presence."
Jacob is escorted back the way he came and soon departs the Aaron. The small vessel curves its way to the edge of the gravity well and disappears in a shimmering light.
Thenos was in his cabin, having been present for the majority of the cleanup operation after the pirate incident. The crews from Gromov had been surprised to see the highest authority in the fleet helping detaching and carrying the strange PsiTech-TEC adapters that had been installed throughout the Halycon. The devices were worrying. Advent could always capture Vasari and TEC ships, while the other two factions could never control an Advent ship. However, this technology changed things. Most of it was now on Gromov being analysed, but some was being taken back to Rebirth onboard the Revenge. The fleet was heading home, as Gromov was now producing its own ships to accompany its defences. The Halycon, also, was accompanying the fleet, with its crew fresh from Gromov. Gromov would be a major asset for the Collective, as the majority of new crews would be taken from its population of almost 12 billion. Thenos had never heard of such a huge population, but then again, he’d never seen a solid planet as huge as Gromov, which was also essentially one big city.
While on his way back to Rebirth, Thenos decided to see what had happened on the bridge of the Halycon. He had been given the memory chip from the helmet camera of one of the marines. The helmet camera for the new armour had been Daala’s idea. It could act as a black box for a dead marine, if recovered. Thenos started the recording on a screen that was part of his desk. He saw from the full view of the visor, which was his first experience of how the world appeared outside the helmets he had designed. The visor could tint itself, but now it was at its clearest, allowing for very good visibility. The HUD didn’t seem too obstructive either, which was good. Thenos skipped to after the first firefight on the bridge, where the captain of the pirates was attempting to make a deal.
“Look,” he said, “you can have the ship and everything on it. We’ll ask our mates to cease fire, and we can head home with them. Everyone’s happy.”
“I don’t think so,” replied Corporal Hendon, “because we could kill you, and get the same result. I’m saying that you give us your ship, and tell us where you got the experimental tech. Then, we’ll give you a ride out of here, with an escort, to a planet of your choosing. What do you say?”
Thenos could see, as the marine whose helmet camera it was turned her head, Major Kolt talking on a radio, and the pirate near his feet who would turn out to still be alive. The view moved again to a nervous looking pirate officer, who broke first, and spoke.
“Lord Ryat,” he said, “that’s what Gerr-”
Thenos saw the pirate captain flick a hidden pistol out of his sleeve, and, despite the quick trigger fingers of the marines, shoot his own officer through the head. The captain’s chest was reduced to a mess of semi-molten flesh by plasma rifle fire, as pirates reached for firearms wherever they could get them. Thenos stopped the recording there. Lord Ryat, and… Gerry? Gerrard? Possibly a pirate, as Lord Ryat sounded like someone too important to be a pirate. He would probably be part of the TEC, as Advent didn’t use titles like lord, and Vasari despised pirates and their lack of honour. Thenos made a mental note to search for this Ryat in a database when he arrived at Rebirth, but for now, decided that he needed to get some sleep.
(Personal / DS) Over Rebirth, Tim and Teldin continue to trade stories with humor and delight. In the short amount of time the two seem to have developed a fairly strong friendship. Whether it be from sharing common histories, brothers in battle even though they've served on different sides, or just because they both find it easy to make new friends, neither can say. All they know is that they'll be trading more stories in the future. "... and then we decided it was better to just run and save our own asses, rather then worry about who could get to Sigma 3 with the least amount of damage." Tim says causing Teldin to laugh boisterously. Teldin replies, "I remember one time as a young cadet, I was ordered to take on a group of mauraders with just a single wing of drone strikecraft... One of my wingmates just looked at our CO and told him what he could do with the drones we were given. I believe he said..." The screen splits. "Sorry to interrupt, sirs, but Thenos has returned and is requesting to speak to you Admiral." a young comms officer states. Teldin replies, "An interruption from such a pretty young girl like yourself is always welcome." She blushes and cuts the comm. Tim puts his head in his hands laughing almost uncontrollably. When he regains his composure a little he continues, "Easy on the bridge staff Teldin, she doesn't know how to fend off an old dog like you." "I should hope not, then life would be very boring for me. We shouldn't keep Thenos waiting, and I need to really get back to work here." Teldin remarks. "It's been a pleasure my friend, we should do this again soon." "Indeed we should Tim, indeed we should." Teldin cuts the comm only to be replaced by Thenos. "How are thing in your neck of the woods?" Tim asks. "They are fine at the moment." Thenos replies. "Hope you don't mind us being here in force, but one of our ships reported back that the fleet was gone, so being that you're a valued partner of ours, we felt it was important to fill the void incase anything happened out here or planetside." "So I see when you said that you protect your trade routes, you actually meant it." "I don't know whom you're used to dealing with, but there are those of us out here who believe less in politics, and more in keeping promises." "That is good to know." "Mind if I ask where everyone disappeared to? Should I be worried about my own system's protection?" "I'm sure there are dangers out there that would be cause for alarm, but this time it isn't the case. We discovered and liberated a large Advent population. You may want to have Henry update our contract to include them." Thenos says as he sends some data over. Tim pulls it up on screen. "Wow. That's a lot of people. A boon to your efforts, no doubt." "Planet Gromov and it's citizens are greatly appreciated and welcomed into our collective." "We shall extend them every courtesy we have. You know, if any of your people would like to get away for awhile, take a vacation or something, send them our way. We have a lot of space available." Tim sends an updated information packet on the Finley system that shows all planets and moons except the gas giants have at least one established colony on them. "Surprisingly, our system has lots of variation to it, so when I have some time off, I'm going to make it a point to spend some time at each of the settlements." "I'll pass the word along." "Thanks. Henry will probably contact you about the contract update. He likes to hear and see things for himself." "I will be expecting it, and I hope Teldin didn't bother you too much." "On the contrary, he made my visit extremely entertaining. That whole unity thing, knowing each other's thoughts, Casey has always made it out to be a huge pain in the ass... But you seem to not have a single problem with it." "It has it's uses. Commands can be given at the speed of thought rather then by the limitations of speech or movement, and you don't have to be near someone to communicate." "So Casey is just full of it?" "I wouldn't say that. There are times where one enjoys not hearing the thoughts and voices of everyone else. As well as times when you wish other's couldn't hear yours. We even have places built so that someone wishing to be alone can do so." "Would you mind having one of those built on Finley 2 for Casey. I get the feeling that she'd aprreciate the opportunity to block everyone out for awhile." "That is not a problem, though it will have to wait until things settle down a bit more." "Oh no rush. She's been under a lot of stress lately being the most important person in the system getting resources as fast as possible and its starting to show. We're all trying to do little things here and there to give her a break, but band-aids are no replacement for a cure." "You could always have her come here instead of waiting. I've actually been waiting for another meeting. I have lots of questions to ask her." Tim laughs, "I'm sure you do, as do I and everyone else, but I'm thinking that if her heading here has the intent of being alone for a little bit, pestering her with questions is only going to piss her off." "That would not be my intent, but please pass on the offer." "I will, and since you're back, we're probably not needed here any longer, so we'll be heading out once we marshal up our ships at the phase lane." "Thank you for taking the interest in our safety Timothy, we all aprreciate it." "No worries. If we didn't do things like this then I'd never get to meet anyone outside of the battlefield." Tim says and cuts the comm. When all of the ships gather in formation, they jump from Rebirth to the Daros star, and then to the Finley star where they all resume their previous assignments. Tim interrupts a conversation that Henry and Roesh are having to inform him of the new developments within the Garran Collective, and stays on the line long enough to be interrupted himself by Jacob's return and report. Henry decides that an in person meeting is best at this point and orders everyone to Finley 1. When the group assembles, henry begins the meeting. He says, "So first things first. The easy one. The Garron Collective is expanding and so is our trade route on their behalf." Tim replies, "That seems to be the whole of it. I didn't detect any undertones to our conversation, so we'll have to let our trade ships tell us the story if anything is different. As an added bonus I have a great repore with one of their radio officers on Rebirth. Says he and Thenos go way back. Plus we had lots of old war stories to tell each other, so I know for a fact he's not just some old RIO." "That must have thrilled you." Roesh comments. "It did. when I get some time off, I'm going to have to take it on Rebirth." Tim Replies. Henry interrupts the banter, "Second issue. We're now in business with David's Lions. Fleet supply for raw resources on the long term, building modules for advanced research data in the near term." Jacob reports, "That was the arrangement we came to." Henry continues, "That should be a huge help to Todd. Proven data over past notes is a nice change of pace." Tim adds, "Looks like our boy Jacob is a better negotiator then you, huh Roesh?" Roesh laughs, "Not likely. If I'm reading this correctly, last time we were in a bind and needed whatever we could get, this time the opposite is true." Jacob continues, "Not that I have much of a say in this, but I think we should divert away from our defense projects for the time being. Our fleet is back and we can push out more ships from the frigate factory. Take advantage of the easy route through the phase gate while we have access to it." "Looks like you were busier then I thought." Tim adds. Henry notes, "I agree. If we build starbases at the star to block the phase lanes right away, the fleet is free to move and we still have adequate protection even without all of the hanger and defense platforms." "But the Vasari have phase gates all it takes is one with the proper tech to get past and they have access deep in the system where there is no defense." Tim adds. "Would be no different then them beating you at the star." Roesh interrupts. Henry continues, "I'd have to agree there, besides you never leave with the full fleet anyway so pursuit can be handled by what is left behind. Third thing. Strange energy readings in an unpopulated nebula aside from pirate activity." "My plan is to send Tim to the Mercevia Nebula." Roesh states. "To finish what you couldn't?" Tim questions. "No... Just to get you out of my hair for awhile." Roesh jokes. "Okay, I'll go, but I need to talk to Casey first. So I'm going to go do that now." Tim says as he excuses himself. "And the David's Lions?" Jacob asks. "Todd and I will go there with the first delivery to make sure everything works out like it's supposed to... I'll go get him and get some supplies ready." Roesh says as he stands up and excuses himself from the meeting. Jacob and Henry sit there in silence for a minute before Jacob stands up. "I'm gonna go and do... Something..." he says and excuses himself.
Thenos ran his hands through his hair. He was in a council meeting on Rebirth, with the council, Teldin, and Captain Jard, the new leader of the Revenge’s marines. The Halycon now had its own three platoons of marines, taken from the best of Gromov’s military. The council meeting had been spurred on by a disturbing chain of events. The council had decided to make cuts to the defence budget. Shortly after this, an Arcova Scout Frigate had turned up in the system, and had reached Rebirth before fleeing back the way it came. Ryan’s Disciples confirmed that there were indeed two wormholes reachable from the deep space sector, and that the Arcova had fled through the one that the Revenge hadn’t used to get to the Daros system. Now, Thenos was attempting to persuade the council to grant him additional supplies for defences.
Don’t you see? he questioned, if we had been granted enough resources for the quick completion of the drone hangars, the Arcova would never have escaped. Now, it is only a matter of time before we face the wrath of a TEC fleet. I humbly request more resources to be diverted from improving this colony in order to defend it.
I think, a young woman from the council said, that you should proceed with a little more caution. A sudden increase in weapons production will cause any enemy factions to attempt pre-emptive strikes, especially those who can see what we are doing.
To be honest with you, Captain Jard said, I don’t think Roesh will give two shits about us defending ourselves. He gets far more from our existence than our destruction.
Despite being shocked by his choice of language in a council chamber, an elderly councilmember agreed with the captain, saying, The good captain is correct. I believe that we can trust these new allies. They-
Nevertheless, the irritating young woman said, until Gromov begins shipping resources to us, we are limited in our investments. Your… intensive use of building materials means that this colony’s progress has been extremely slow. Without a growth in the colony-
Without defences, Thenos protested, the colony will be a puddle of radioactive sludge within the month. Once we can adequately defend ourse-
Defend ourselves? Mister Garr, I recall that you submitted a request recently for a Deliverance Engine to have a place in orbit reserved. That is not defence. That is an example of military mindlessness and a lack of concern for the people of Rebirth.
Thenos stood, saying, Military mindlessness? Do you think this is an easy situation? We are one of the few systems which can be entered from three points! Two wormholes and the star. This is a tactical nightmare! You can have your additional comforts down here when the sky up there is ready to take on the bastards who would blindly sweep us off the star charts.
Thenos… Teldin privately warned, stay calm.
As Thenos sat, Thenos’ rival spoke again, As I believe you may know, these are not mere “comforts” that we seek. These are advanced water collectors, improved cooling devices. Your delusions of us being an important military power are misconceptions of an overdeveloped ego. Simply because you managed to separate enough people from the Unity to start a new civilisation does not mean-
That’s it, Thenos stood again, what’s wrong with you? Do you enjoy sitting there in your safe democratic chambers while people lose their lives on the front lines? What I propose is the continued safety of my people against those who are too blind to see people waiting with words of welcome! Now you can either join the military in its opinions, or you can side against the people!
Once again, the woman said, you mistake the people as part of your military machine, and I tell you, that this is exactly what happened at Try’shd with your mother, and-
Right, Thenos said, then we vote.
You can’t just force a vo-
Who’s with me? Thenos continued.
Cautiously, four of the seven council members voted in favour of prioritising the military budget. Afterwards, Teldin caught Thenos on his way out.
You need to be careful, Thenos, Teldin said.
Yes, I know. I’m sorry.
Look, I know it’s hard, but you need to see why they are concerned. They… well, not to cause offence, but they think you could end up like your mother.
No, Thenos said firmly, I’ll never be like her.
I believe you, Teldin assured Thenos, but they are politics. They think that what they do is for the good of all, and usually it is with us Advent, but if they feel threatened by something, they act… irrationally. Your military presence worries them, and as I’ve said, your mother was put in a similar position of power before-
Yes, I know, and I can see how soldiers outnumber civilians in most of this system. However the civilians can’t be threat-
Yes, I agree with you. Just… just try not to force decisions on the council from now on. I know that this is a dangerous situation if the enemy know where we are, but in future… Anyway, you find Jard, and you two meet me at the nearby bar. We can get to know him over a drink.
The Arcova phase jumped from the wormhole, only stellar object in the Yusta system, to the star.
“This is a promotion for sure,” said the first lieutenant, “an Advent outpost like this should get us a lot of credit with Paragon Carbon.”
“One step at a time, my friend,” the captain said, “I’ll try to get a private appointment with Carbon. That should boost our chances of receiving good favour.”
As the vessel arrived at the star, an officer reported, “We’ve found a capital ship, sir. It’s a fellow –UE_ vessel, called the Charybdis, but it’s not responding to our hailing signal.”
“Really? Strange. Go closer, it may be a communications fault.”
The scout ship moved closer. The captain never did return to Carbon.
(Personal / DS) Roesh finds Todd at the civilian reserch station in orbit over Finley 2. Todd is standing in the corner of an office that is temporarily his until the research projects he's overseeing are completed. He's reading a spreadsheet full of notes and performance data. Roesh walks in and takes a seat behind the desk which has several stacks of paperwork. Not getting any attention aside from the quick glance up from Todd, he begins to dig through a couple of the stacks. "Can I help you find something boss?" Todd asks. "Yeah, the top of your desk." Roesh answers. "It's there. I just haven't seen it since the first day I claimed this office." "Wanna go for another trip?" "I'd love to, but some of this really needs to be gone over and signed off on." "We just got offered a bunch of data that could make most of this paperwork disappear." "Okay, you have me a tiny bit interested... Keep on talking, you might lure me in." "The David's Lions." "Ah yes, the reason for my mounds of paperwork." "They have agreed to give us advanced civilian techs in exchange for us maintaining their fleet upkeep and rebuilding another another planet under their care." "Sounds reasonable, they boost our output and we give them a cut in return. I'm being asked to go along because...?" "Now that's the fun part." Todd remains silent waiting for the explination. Roesh continues, "We've been given data on how to use a Vasari phase gate." Todd's eyes light up with excitement, "NO!" "Yes." Roesh says as he tosses him a data card. Todd puts the card into the port on his computer and brings up the info. "NICE! Very nice!" "We have to use the gate to get to the David's Lions the easy way. It's longer then the normal route since we can't just jump to the star, but what the hell. They helped us, we'll help them. You do realize I'm going to offer your services while we're there, right?" "I figured as much." "Problems with that?" "Company man. C-O... M-P... A-N-Y... Company man." Todd somewhat sings out. Roesh laughs, "You know, I still think it's funny that we still use paper." "Oh we don't have to, I just like to stack it up on the desk. People don't bother me when they see a mountain of it. They think I'm busy or something." "Oh, well, if you're not busy, then I can expect you to be installing upgrades when we get back." "Actually, I was thinking of taking a vacation day once you got done whoring me out." "Denied... Pimp's gotta make his money with his best trick on the streets at all times." "Oh come on, even a ho needs a rest..." "Sorry to... Interrupt... Sirs. Riona Sullivan is looking for you. Says Henry called her up and requested large quantities of supplies and building materials be diverted to orbital holdings, and now she wants to yell at you." A station attendent informs them. "Thanks." Roesh says and clicks on the video screen showing Riona's face. "Yes?" "Why are my supplies being diverted?" she asks. Roesh answers, "They're my supplies." "No, I promised to make the people a priority and you taking away MY supplies. Makes them less of a priority." she states somewhat angrily. Todd mutters, "She's an employee right?" Roesh shakes his head and hums in the affirmative. "I was elected." she states. "Right. You were elected into a board position within my company. Rather then me just picking someone, Jacob convinced me it would be better to let you guys choose your own leader. Don't make me regret that." Roesh responds with. "You would undo an election?" she asks quizically. "An election that I consider to be nothing more then shareholders deciding on a representative to speak for them within my company's boardroom. Don't overglorify your position. You're not leading a nation... Just representing them." "Reguardless of your opinion, I'm not going to let you just take what you want, when you want it." "I can and will." Roesh says as he cuts the comm. "You know boss, she does have a point." Todd says. Roesh replies, "I know. But I'm not letting some political wannabe run my company either. It's a good lesson for you. You can't please everyone all of the time, no matter how hard you try. So don't aggrivate yourself trying. She doesn't know it, but even though giving up all of that stuff presents us with a slight shortage, and diverting future supplies to meet our end of the deal will take recovering the losses more time. The big picture..." Todd interrupts, "The big picture is, we gain much much more in the near future, and you've asserted dominance for the future conflicts... Even though there's going to be some backlash for it." Roesh continues, "Then we get to see how much they like their elected representative. Anyway, we need to get going." "Right behind ya boss." Todd says as they exit the office. They each board a Dunov and load them up with as much as they'll hold. They also line up a half dozen trade ships to be packed full. A few hours later, once the ships were stuffed with as much as they'll hold, they head out. They Jump from the Finley Star to the Eras Alpha Star. Lining up for the shortest route possible to Eras VII, they make two more jumps. "There she is..." Todd muses as he stares out the window at the gate. He loads up the gate data given to them into the ship's navigation and jump systems and transfers a copy over to the other Dunov and the trade ships. Roesh contacts the gate's controller and informs them that they're headed to Portage with supplies for the David's Lions and Portage IV. After a few minutes, permission to proceed is granted and they slowly approach. Power begins to surge around the gate and light blue waves begin to dance inside the ring it creates. In a line all eight ships make a jump unlike any they've ever experienced before. "Woooooow..." Todd says on the other side. "We definately need to reverse engineer these gates. Imagine how easy it would be to get around from system to system..." "You can work on that on your own time. For now we have work to do." Roesh says while concerned about how easy it would be to abuse the gates to strike deep within a system. The ships all line up for the jump to Portage IV and vanish in puffs of blue and white. At Portage IV Roesh puts out a radio call to Admiral Draakjacht. "RFT here as agreed upon with lots of goodies." "Nice to finally have a lot of the things we need." the admiral replies.
" Been quite since the last bout sir"
Xenon was sitting in his quarters. He had been talking with the Underworld for the past hour, getting cought up on -Ue_ events while he had been busy.
" So the board had mode no major moves yet?" Xenon asked
" No seems, they are waiting on something, probably trying to suck as much money out of here before they head out. Iron is still rebuilding, has a nice fleet but you know he likes the biggest and baddest. Guesses are that he will come back for you and Carbon, he doesn't like to leave jobs unfinished."
"No he doesn't, what news of Gold?"
"Nothing new, holding some systems for us and getting the Underworld supplies, Fending off most of the other devisions that have tried to move in, but again no major battles to date."
" Alright, keep me posted if anything big happens."
" Will do sir, oh on a side note, one of Carbon's scouts, AS 376C90, It hasnt returned yet, all other scouts sent out have retured and sent thier info to us. Not sure whats up, probably the captain forgetting to send us the his info. Just find it and tell him to send it to us so we can take his ship off the MIA list."
" Alright I'll talk to Carbon and see if its back yet. In the mean time keep a close eye on the board, they have to be up to something"
"Yes sir, Underworld out"
Xenon hit some buttons on his desk, soon the communication officer came up on his screen
" Yes sir"
" Get me a connection to Carbon"
" Be a little bit sir, the array is down at the moment, one of the crews working on the Kostra ran into it"
" Ok well let me know when its up again"
" will do sir"
Xenon turned the screen off, Leaning back in his chair. The work on the Kostra had been intresting so far. With the joint work of the Visari and his own techs, they had made many technological break thoughs, which was good for all involved. Xenon thought of how each race, Human and Visari, could benifit from a lasting relationship. Then maybe they could kill off all of those damn Advent. Xenon continued in his thoughts, just waiting for the work on the Kostra to be done so they could continue on to the target.
The Charybdis waited. Scylla had made good use of the specialist equipment salvaged from the Arcova. Several probes had been rewired to spy on the various fleets that surrounded the primary target, and had found something most interesting. A pair of Dunovs and six trade ships from the Roesh Free Traders had approached the David’s Lions for trade. They would inevitably head back to their origin, and Scylla had calculated that the route on which the Charybdis waited was the most likely one that they would take that didn't have a significant enemy presence along it. The plan was to propel the timed explosives from the Arcova through the shields of a Dunov using phase technology, and cripple the ship’s engines. The Charybdis would then perform a flyby, dropping off spider robots on the immobile vessel. However, the spiders would give the crew enough time to evacuate the Dunov, so that the second Dunov was busy with picking up the life pods. Allowing the crew to survive would greatly increase the chance of the remaining enemy ships fleeing and leaving Scylla to its work, as they would be safe in the knowledge that no lives had been lost, and wouldn’t want to risk any more lives in combat. Of course, the other Dunov may choose to fight, but the Charybdis could take down the enemy ship, possessing not only the normal strength and durability of a Kol, but also being upgraded with many scavenged technologies. Either way, Scylla would achieve its objectives, and would claim the shield restoration tech from the Dunov’s wreckage. The trap was set. Now all Scylla had to do was wait for the prey to arrive.
The Abettor and Advocate pull alongside Blue Fleet, small shuttles moving back and forth as materials are exchanged between both the fleet elements and the nearly hollow trade hub structure a fair distance away. One of the vessels arrives on board the DLS David, with a full parade of officers ready to meet the arrivals. The shuttle lands and doors open to allow the visitors onto the flight deck. The first man off walks towards Admiral Draakjacht and extends his hand, "Hello, Admiral. My name's Todd Degroff, fleet engineer. It's nice to finally meet you in the flesh."
The admiral extends his hand, taking Todd's and shaking, "It is indeed. I hope you had a good flight over."
Todd shrugs, "Nothing particularly interesting most of the way, but that Vasari gate. That would be something to get my hands on."
Alexander smiles, "I agree. My men won it into custody, but I've held back on having it cut apart to keep others happy."
"Understood. It's a constant trade made with someone." The officers are acquainted with the men coming off of the shuttle, handshakes exchanged all around.
Once the pleasantries are completed, Alexander turns his attention back to Todd. "If you'll walk with me, I can show you to the bridge," Alexander says, extending his arm to guide Todd off of the flight deck.
Todd takes notice of the vessel's tight corridors and some of the equipment as they make their way to the bridge. Once there, Lieutenant Commander Frishman rises from the admiral's chair and salutes. Alexander lazily salutes back and says, "Lieutenant Commander Frishman, this is Todd Degroff of the Roesh Free Traders. Mr. Degroff, this is my second in command and tactical officer."
"Please, call me Todd. It's a pleasure." The two shake hands and the men accompanying Todd disperse to mingle with others on the bridge.
Todd notices the camera setup and smiles, "You've got a lot of outdated equipment on this vessel. If you wanted some nice upgrades, you should stop by the Finley system. We can have you hooked up in no time with the best tech."
Alexander returns the smile and replies, "That's a very nice offer, but if I remember correctly, we are providing you with more advanced technology."
"For some things, yes. We still have a lot to offer you. Take that camera there. If you let me, I can have a visual communication device hooked directly into your holoprojection system. I can even have external visuals prepared."
"I don't see any reason we couldn't use the communication update, but there's no reason for externals. Targeting systems care little how pretty the other ship is," Alexander replies.
Todd laughs, "True, but you never know when it could come in handy."
Alexander shakes his head, "I think I'll pass on going through that much trouble. We..."
"Sir," the helmsman interrupts, "we have incoming from Portage III. Largely cruisers, but we have two confirmed capitals."
Alexander takes his seat, "All hands, red alert. Bring the fleet about and have Red Fleet form up. Mr. Degroff, have your Dunovs take position near the trade port and hold position."
"They would be put to better use giving you support," Todd argues.
"Negative. You're under my watch and, although we outnumber them, it's my responsibility to keep you and your men safe."
"You know I'm on your battleship, right?"
"Yeah, you might want to get belted in."
Realizing the soundness of the advice, Todd makes his way to a nearby seat and secures himself. Turning to watch the holoprojections, he sees the numerous red blips flood into the gravity well. The Lions are out of range as the last come in, but close in fast on the targets, the support vessels easing up on their engines to allow the Kols to take the lead. The enemy fleet is headed by a mere dozen Skarovas Enforcers with ten Serevun Overseers and another ten Junsurak Sentinels. Behind them a Kortul Devastator and Vulkoras Desolator cover their flanks.
Alexander keeps his focus on the holoprojector, "Tactical, what have we got?"
"Usual armor weakness, but they're packing a large load of phase missiles, sir," Frishman shoots back.
"Alright, have Captain Adler prepare a missile barrage and hold the line until the Vulkoras gets in range. I want that down before it's in range to do damage. Pull all strikecraft in for the time being," Alexander orders.
"Yes, sir."
The Samson moves up, taking position below the line of Kols. The Vasari vessels move in, the Enforcers maintaing the lead to shield the support vessels. The capitals continue to lag behind the lot.
"Sir, the enemy is moving in formation."
Alexander shakes his head, "There's no way they're that stupid. They know what a Marza is."
Frishman replies, "They could be using the cruisers as a wall in hopes of getting the Kortul close."
"And flood one ship with nanites while dozens retaliate? Doesn't sound right to me."
"Deperation isn't becoming of the Vasari. They do stupid things when cornered," Frishman quips.
The Vasari vessels fall within range of the Lions' extended weapons fire. Alexander says, "Mr. Degroff, let me introduce you to the more advanced parts of our vessels. Lieutenant Commander, open fire."
Ferro-Uranite rounds and Cyclotaurite loaded missiles blaze across space, a wall of hot metal crashing into the face of the enemy. The initial impact causes the enemy Enforcers to stutter in their course, a couple already consumed in fire. The Vasari vessels push against the fire for a moment longer before launching phase missiles.
"Sir, we have incoming."
"All hands, brace for..."
The ship rocks violently, justifying the call for safety belts. Amidst the turbulence, Alexander shouts, "Status."
Frishman holds onto his panel, steadying himself, "Three missiles penetrated the shields. The resilient metalloids are holding."
Todd's ears perk at the words while he holds the bottom of his seat. Outside of the vessel, the last of the Vasari cruisers come within range of the Marza's barrage and it opens up, a flood of missiles glittering the void and adding splashes of enemy debris. The Vulkoras is the first to break through the wall of fire, attracting the attention of the Kols. The Rebecca releases an ion bolt, sending the vessel into a drift before round after round from the Kols' railguns rip into the ship. The last of the Kols fires off its gauss cannon and the Vulkoras crumbles under the onslaught.
"Sir, the last of the phase missiles should be gone. Do we launch fighters?"
"No, we aren't in need of strikecraft cover. Turn and engage the Kortul," Alexander answers.
The Kols turn towards the Kortul now emerging from the cooling mess. Just before they can open up on the Vasari vessel, a power surge is detected coming from the Vasari core. The Kols open fire, only to find that the shielding regenerates at a rate comparable to the weapon damage. The Kortul returns fire with its wave weaponry, the damage being tolerable, but the rate of fire causing concern.
"Sir, we're not cracking their shields fast enough," Frishman warns.
"We'll hold. Just keep firing all weapons," Alexander insists.
The Kortul's shields, although holding, become opaque as light bounces across a great portion of its surface. The vessel arcs around to point its nose back in the direction it came. It's rear shielding takes the punishment with grace as it attempts to escape. Even with an ion bolt, the vessel's shields hold until the other systems come back online. The Kortul is almost far enough to begin its phase transition when another ion bolt passes blue fleet, striking the Kortul in the rear and again bringing it into a lazy drift.
"Sir, Red Fleet's made it from the other side of the gravity well. Their reporting all systems ready at full power," Frishman reports.
"Weapons free."
Gauss rail guns fire, one after another, until a round makes it through the shielding, blasting a hole in one of the rear sections. Ion bolts, carefully spaced, keep the vessel in place while rounds are piled on and the target steadily buckles and eventually erupts with the breaching of its anti-matter reserves. The flash of light subsides, and the Lions stand down. While crews across the board return to their normal operations, Alexander stands to address guest.
"I believe you were going to work on our communications screen?"
Todd smiles in return.
The Charybdis moved amongst its fellow TEC ships in the Portage system. Scylla knew that it had acted rashly, and had formulated a plan without waiting for complete intel. When the probes had found the phase gate in the Portage system, Scylla had recalculated its percentages, and had realised that the Roesh Free Traders would never take the route that Scylla had predicted, when they could just take the phase gate route through a large concentration of friendly ships, and then onwards to… wherever the gate led. Scylla had requested more time to wait for a ship to expose itself, but the Charybdis’ central computer had insisted that the Dunov’s shield restoration equipment was needed urgently. The central computer was Scylla’s greatest invention. It monitored and adjusted energy levels and such throughout the ship, and also calculated what was needed to further maximise the Charybdis’ efficiency. A key example of this, and what machines could achieve over humans, was the shield restoration gear. Humans could use the gear to recharge shields in emergencies. The Charybdis used it to boost its shield integrity to double that of a standard Kol. Of course, this was impossible for humans, as the power levels in the gear had to be adjusted every fraction of a nanosecond to avoid overheating. Of course, the equipment eventually wore out, which was why Scylla had to find a replacement.
Scylla’s first stop was actually the phase gate. It waited near the gate, appearing to all nearby ships to be another –UE_ Kol, until a small vessel passed by to travel through the gate. Scylla sent a silent message to the only spider robot that remained on the exterior of the Charybdis. The spider drifted out into space, landing on the smaller vessel and travelling with it to the Eras system. The Charybdis waited for the robot to return on a vessel coming back to the Portage system. Scylla cared for its own. All of the Charybdis’ robots had a degree of sentience, and Scylla, despite the systematic restructuring of its brain, still held some compassion, even if only for its fellow machines. As the robot scuttled into the ship’s interior, the Charybdis turned and headed to Portage VII.
Scylla couldn’t take on a Dunov from one of the big fleets in the Portage system. That would be suicide. Taking a Dunov from the RFT had turned out to be too difficult as well. Now, with the central computer hurrying things along, Scylla had decided to go for another source of ships, even if the parts would be inferior to military grade ones. Scylla needed to find out where it could find some pirates, and had called up on from its memory. This pirate Dunov would suit Scylla’s needs perfectly, and Lord Ryat would know where it could be found. This stage of Scylla’s plan was risky, as a single unconvincing word could give the game away, and Scylla would never be able to fight its way to the phase gate from Portage VII. Flying around the planet, the Charybdis closed in on the Pheonix, and opened a secure comms channel.
“This is Captain Donson of the –UE_ vessel Charybdis,” Charybdis said, imitating a voice that it had last heard gibbering its last words in the command room of the research facility that Scylla had escaped from. Ryat would see a doctored image that showed a perfectly normal human, “Paragon Carbon has sent me with a request for some intel.”
Lord Ryat’s face appeared on the screen, “Anything to help a friend. What do you need?”
“Well, Carbon is requesting information on the location of a pirate vessel,” Scylla paused as a frown crossed Ryat’s face, but the moment passed, so Scylla sent the ship ID and continued, “as it has been causing trouble at an outlying outpost affiliated with the Carbon Division.”
“Really? Why couldn’t Carbon contact me directly?”
“We’ve had a communications problem recently, so he sent me and my ship. He apologises for any inconvenience.”
“Right. I’ll send you an encrypted package that will detect the ship’s homing…”
“Is something wrong, my lord?” Scylla asked, following social norms that it remembered from its past life. It was common to show concern if another was acting strangely, rather than acting straight away, whereas a spider robot would repair one of its fellows immediately, rather than asking if it wanted them to first, as the answer would obviously be yes.
“Sorry,” Ryat said, “I just felt a little… odd for a second. Feel like I’ve got a headache coming on. No idea why. Anyway, I’ll send you the data that will allow you to track down your pirates. I don’t know why they would attack one of your assets, but I suppose that they must be disciplined.”
“Thank you, my lord. I’m sure that Paragon Carbon will thank you personally when communications are back to normal.”
“Excellent. Oh, and make sure to tell Carbon to use the same code as last time to decrypt this file.”
The Charybdis left the gravity well and headed to the phase gate. Suddenly, a transmission came through. A robotic voice was heard on the bridge.
“This is Paragon Xenon of the –UE_ vessel Osiris. Your vessel is not registered on my ship list. Please send your details so that we don’t suffer any future confusion.”
Scylla, recognising the voice, simply activated the video feed, sending an undoctored image. Project Delta’s metal mask appeared on the screen, his red eyes widening in horror as he recognised Scylla. Scylla saw Xenon turn and shout commands frantically at his bridge crew, before turning back and meeting Scylla’s gaze. It seemed like an eternity that Beta and Delta, survivors of the ETC program, stared at each other, and the newer model was the first to break. Xenon cut off the video feed, as Scylla sent orders to its robotic crew, and the Charybdis shot forwards, it engines, upgraded with technology from Advent, Vasari and other TEC ships, allowing it to shoot towards the phase gate while nearby vessels had only just begun to turn. The Charybdis hit the wall of blue and white, and vanished.
Scylla, now that the Charybdis had escaped first the Portage system, and now the Eras system, pondered its actions. Revealing itself to Xenon had been irrational, but it had felt… right somehow. Then the satisfaction from seeing Xenon’s fear made little sense to Scylla’s computerised brain. No matter how much it tried, Scylla could never completely rid itself of the impulsive nature that was part of the human mind. Perhaps that was a good thing. After all, it gave Scylla purpose. The need to prove its superiority over Xenon, and to take revenge, was a human desire. The compassion that Scylla had for its creations, which meant that only six spider robots had ever been lost from Scylla’s crew, was also an emotion not felt by a normal machine. The sentience of the other robots on the Charybdis was advanced enough to also feel emotion, but only in the way that an animal cares for the rest of its pack, or herd. Scylla cut off this train of thought, and focused on the task at hand, continuing to hack the encryption on the data from Ryat.
Lord Ryat studied the holomap as the Kol dashed forth and disappeared. He queued up for information on any readings for that particular Kol and its activities here in the gravwell. It came quickly and the results are odd. The Kol was registered as a -Ue_ vessel with a baseline energy reading. But the vessel that came through just showed some enormous energy usage in an attempt to escape. He studied the actions taken. Coming in, contacting him, his head hurt just thinking about the conversation, then contacting Xenon? just before the Kol jumps? He called up Xenon. "What!" Xenon said, clearly frustrated. "Is everything okay?" Ryat asked. "Yeah, just go some bad news," Xenon said in a dismissive tone. "From Charybdis?" Ryat asked. "Yeah," Xenon growled. "Anything I can help with?" Ryat asked in a concerned tone. "No!" Xenon almost shouted, "Wait, what did the captian of the vessel talk to you about?" "Um, wanted to know something about the pirates in the region," Ryat said, caught off guard. "Said it was for Carbon." "Kay, thanks," Xenon said, then cut the transmission adruptly. Ryat looked at the viewscreen for a while. He then called up the recording of the conversation with Captain Donson, studying it carefully, but not catching anything odd. Except the pain. He couldn't feel it now, but when he thought back to that event he could. It was like pain, sort of, almost like damage that would never heal. He paused for a moment, then sighed. All his resources were all tied up in preparing for the attack on Kyrene. He would worry about this later.
The worst possible time
Xenon thought to himself after seeing a face he had not seen in a long time. His ship had picked up the ship, and it being in an unsuall place, Xenon had decided to investigate. The ship he came to find out, was something he hoped he never had to see again after what had happened. It was back on the research station, he was just comming online after they had grafted him to the robot. He remembers men running around, trying to get all of the cyborg experiments online. There was a lots of shouting and gun fire off in the distance. Delta quickly booted up as the man in front of him yelled for him to save him. What was happeneing? Delta stood all the way up, and looked around the room. Just then lots of armed men came into the room, all pointing thier guns at Delta. One of them steped forward,
" Delta, you are to come with us."
Before he knew what to say he herd a robot voice speak out for him,
" Affermative "
More gun fire could be heard in the background as the armed men lead him to shuttle, Delta's legs almost moving on thier own. He steped on the shuttle as an explosion burst out of the wall, comming form a large robotic monster. The armed men started shooting as soome steped out of the shuttle. A robotic voice could be heard comming form it almost yelling at the men around it,
" Beta is superior, all others are obsolete"
It started at the men, throwing them around like toys. Then is cought sight of Delta, and came running toward him. One of the men yelled at the pilot of the shuttle,
" Lets get the hell out of here! "
The shuttle took off as the door closed just short of Beta reaching it. That was the last time the now Paragon Xenon had seen Beta. Now that he has show up, it would have to be taken care of quickly before he was able to de-rail the plan of taking Kyrene.
Xenon sat in his thoughts a few moments longer, then he got up and went to a shuttle, he had people to talk to.

(Pesonal / DS) Back at the Finley Star, Tim is holding a video conference with his fleet captains. "Hey kids. Just so we're all clear, the Assailant, Contender, Fulcrum, and Firebrand are heading out on assignment. The Hoshikos are going with us as well as frigate group Baker. Group Able is staying put with the rest of you for now. The unassigned Kodiak and the remaining scouts are all assigned to group Able as of right now. Henry informs me that since internal defenses are being reprioritized lower, to give us some mobility back, 6 Raloz are scheduled to roll off the assembly line ASAP. Four will head to the star, one will head to Finley 1, and one will head to Finley 4. So that means we'll have some shiney new starbases by the time this little expedition returns, and both phase lanes leading into the system will have 3 Argonevs each. Good enough to slow down most fleets. Hopefully as the system grows, so will fleet division, but you never know. Odds are, we'll only grow as the contracts come in. Henry also tells me that Finley 3, and the moon over Finley 1, as well as the third moon over Finley 4 will all be gaining repair bays by the time we get back. Unfortunately, no upgrading ourselves just yet even though We really can't keep waiting like this. The way planetary division is absorbing resources latelythere just isn't enough to put into fleet even if there were upgrades available. So that's the jist of things... Anyone have anything they'd like to say?" The captains all remain silent so Tim dismissess the meeting and has his expedition fleet form up at the star and jump to the Mercevia Nebula. Like Roesh's trip through, the scanners pick up lots of energy readings, but almost all of them come from natural sources. The only one they can pull out that doesn't appear to be natural is an intermitten source deeper in the system. The pair of scouts are sent in ahead while the slower fleet forms up to make the jump together. The scouts, after making the jump, run into the pirate corsair guarding the dark planet and the secret it's hiding. They take evasive action outrunning the corsair and dodging it's random weapons fire. The expedition fleet receives the warning from the scouts before they jump and sound the battle station alarms. When the fleet arrives, the captain of the corsair sends them a message. "Don't get comfortable, you won't be here for long." he says and terminates the comms before anyone else can speak. The corsair jumps from the gravity well using another phase lane leaving the fleet alone to scan the planet. Aboard the Assailant, a sensor officer says to Tim, "Admiral Hodgkins, sir... The readings stopped all together when we jumped into this well. Surface scans aren't picking anything up either. Whatever it is, they're below ground beyond the depth our scanners can penetrate." "So they must be really deep then." Tim says. "No sir." the sensor officer corrects him. "The rock here is really dense and I wouldn't be surprised if something else is there jamming out signals. We're not penetrating more then 30 meters." Tim leans over to look at the sensor display. "It's pretty uniform around the planet isn't it?" "Yes sir. I would suspect there are rare metals or crystals naturally occuring inside the planet reflecting our signals or scattering them so we can't get readings. It's far too vast to be man made and not have some sort of energy reading bleeding through it." Tim thinks for a moment before switching his attention to Captain Ellis. "Hey Josh, you think you and Stephany have any marine squads that would go planetside and check things out?" "Only every one of them." Captain Ellis replies. "Great, get them prepped. I'll tell Steph to do the same. As soon as we find the antenna being used, we'll send them down." "Yes, sir." Captain Ellis says with a salute and walks off. Tim calls up the other three fleet captains and informs them of the plan. The two Kols move into a low orbit pattern and prep for a marine landing. The Sova and Marza maintain a much higher orbit providing cover. The frigates of battle group Baker scatter throughout the well. The scouts soon report that probes found an antenna array built into the surface of the planet, and the marines are sent in to investigate. Two platoons worth land near the array, 120 marines in all, and it doesn't take them long to find a cave entrance to the North of it. The lieutenant in charge of the marine forces stresses maintaining radio contact at all times and if contact is broken, the squad is to return to the surface so cantact can be re-established. This is in response to the sensors not being able to scan very far into the cave system. Not long after the marines begin to enter the caves, a pirate battle group jumps in from the star. The group consists of seven corsairs, nine pillagers, six reapers, six cutthroats, and more importantly, a battleship, a stolen halcyon, and a stolen Dunov. "HEAVY CONTACTS SIR!" a sensor officer yells out to Tim while activating the general alarm. Tim jumps into his seat and buckles in. "Perfect timing. Caught us with our pants down. Captain Ellis, notify the marines we may need them to pull out quickly if things get too crazy out here." "Aye sir." captain Ellis replies while strapping himself into another chair. Battle group Baker begins to collapse in and around the pirate ships and open fire as soon as they hit maximum weapons range. Several of the reapers break formation and head straight for the Fulcrum hoping to reach it before it can lauch a full compliment of fighters. Normally, this would be a wise tactic, but this time, the Marza clears the planet and opens up with a missile barrage forcing them to back off. When they try to rejoin the group, they're met by a flurry of missiles launched by the Javalis. Although severely damaged, not one of the reapers fall. The stolen Halcyon launches is full compliment of fighters and bombers forcing the Garda to all take up a screening position just in front of their capital ships. The garda do their job and shred the incoming strikecraft up. Again, most are able to return to the Halcyon severely damaged. Tim advances the Kols to the front where they actively engage the pirate battleship. The stolen Dunov sits behind it, supporting it whenever it can while shooting off both port and starboard heavy pulse laser batteries preventing anyone from moving into a flanking position. Several cobalts and javalis fall under the intense punishment of the firefight. Fortunately, Battle group Baker is able to knock out all of the cutthroats and most of the reapers allowing the strike craft to have almost free reign to make attack and bombing runs. The battle seems to be a one-off, the RFT having greater numbers, but the Pirates having better weapons, shielding, and armor. For each pirate ship that falls, so does one from group Baker. For each ship of Group Baker that dies in a fiery explosive death, they retaliate to make the same happen to the pirates. The hoshikos move in behind the Assailant and the Contender, each doing it's best to hide from enemy fire and keep up with the repairs to the Kols. It doesn't take too long for the pirate battleship to begin showing signs of distress. Their shots come faster and with less precision, a typical sign of a panicked crew. Both Kol captains begin shouting words of encouragement and praise to their crews and ask them to step up their performace to ensure victory. They take turns firing rail gun blast after railgun blast at the Pirate battleship until it begins to turn away. Captain Luhrs aboard the Fulcrum orders all strike craft under his command to actively target the battleship. It doesn't take much longer for it's back to be broken. Explosion after explosion rip the outer hull apart. Several more shots from the main beam cannons from both Kols seal it's fate. The pirate battleship drops from it's position and explodes sending metal shards in every direction. Still being lined up, the Kols take on the Dunov which is clearly no match. Knowing exactly where to hit it to produce the most damage, the Assailant and the Contender make short work of it and move on to the Halcyon. The Firebrand with the aid of the remaining Javalis and Garda, maintain protective coverfire using their missile batteries to take out any drone that are launched. The remaining cobalt and Krosov all form up and concentrate their fire on each pirate frigate remaining, taking them out one by one and minimizing their own losses. Soon the Halcyon falls as well and battle group baker surrounds the remaining pirate frigates removing any chance they have to escape. When the last one is destroyed, the remnants of the battlegroup take up positions around the planet so the Hoshikos can work their magic. Tim calls up the lieutenant in command on the ground, "I hope you guys have something for me, we just took a beating up here." The lieutenant replies, "Sorry sir, progress has been slowed since we keep losing radio contact with the advance teams. We've been holing up at locations and using squads as radio relays, and I personally don't care for playing this game." "I don't either so do what you can to find out what's there." Tim says. "Yes sir. We'll do everythig we can." Half an hour later not much more progress has been made in the caves. The marines have encountered booby traps and small pockets of resistance, further slowing their already slower then normal pace. Unfortunately for the fleet, that wasn't their only problem. Another group of pirate ships, very similar to the previous one, jump into the system looking for a fight. "SIR, HEAVY CONTACTS!" the sensor officer yells out and once again triggers the general alarm. "Son of a bitch!" Tim says as he pushes the radio officer out of the way so he can contact the troops planetside. "Emergency evac, get your asses back here yesterday, if you don't hurry we're all dead." He jumps back into his seat and straps in for another battle. "Set up a screen we need to fight and give time to get everyone back. As soon as the landing ships are on, we're out of here." The fleet lines up in a blockade and opens fire on any frigate that comes too close Captain Hubiak aboard the Firebrand designates targets for the fleet to fire on giving them the best possible chance to take ships out and minimize their own losses. This pirate fleet makes more erratic actions showing off their obvious lack of battle experience, but even so, the pirates still manage to decimate battle group Baker after several minutes, leaving only the capital ships. Captain Luhrs calls out for a cease fire. To his supprise, the pirates stop shooting. "I am Commander Tahl. Are you prepared to negotiate your surrender?" a man asks over the radio. Captain Luhrs answers, "Stand by Commander Tahl, our Admiral is on one of the Kol class Battleships, and they are currently experiencing communications issues. I'm sure they're working on it as fast as they can since they're not being shot at anymore." "So you are not prepared to negotiate your surrender..." Commander Tahl says. "I personally cannot, sir. I am not the commanding officer present." Captain Luhrs answers. Commander Tahl's face appears on the screen. "I can make you the commanding officer by destroying the Kol." he says. "I'm sorry sir, but I'm actually the lowest seniority captain here, you'd have to destroy all three other ships first." Lurhs says stalling for time. The landing craft all break orbit and head for the Kols as fast as they can, prompting Commander Tahl to start making demands, "What are those and what were they doing on my planet!?!" Lurhs answers again doing his best to stall for time, "Those are technical engineers, Commander. We found the antenna array and after following the intermitten signal here. They were sent down to establish contact with what we assume is a colony and see if they needed any assistance in repairing their transmitter so they could communicate properly rather then in bursts." Commander Tahl looks back at one of the people behind him. That person shakes their head no, and Tahl looks back at the camera. "LIES! You will tell me what you were doing or we will destroy you!" Captain Luhrs looks back at some of his officers on the bridge delaying his answer until he gets a thumbs up from one of them. "Okay, okay. The truth is we have no idea what is there and we were investigating it." Commander Tahl grunts out a little laugh, "Investigating with soldiers... I like that. I'll have to try it with your ships." Tim's face appears on the screen and he says, "Yeah... But not today." All four RFT ships open fire. The Fulcrum, already pointed in the right direction, throttles up, and heads for the jump point. The Marza throttles up and turns the opposite way as fast as it can and heads for the jump point. The two Kols, fire up their adaptive force fields and charge straight at the pirates forcing them to scatter. The adaptive force fields soak up all of the damage thrown at them as they turn and head for the jump point as well. Tim radios to the captains to not wait for a formation and to make the jumps as soon as they can. The fulcrum reaches the jump first and vanishes. The two Kols arrive just before the Firebrand and all three take hits to their aft sections until they all jump to the star. The Fulcrum, well ahead of them, launches it's strike craft to provide cover during their retreat. The pirate ships begin to jump into the system in small groups, and the strike craft do their best to stall them before they're recalled to the Sova so it can make it's next jump. They arrive just ahead of the Kols and Marza, and all four jump from Mercevia back to Finley and to safety. Back at the Finley star, they're delighted to see that Henry did in fact get the starbases built. Checking the system data, they see the other three repair bays got built as well. Tim asses the ships and finds out all four took moderate to heavy damage, so he orders them all to head for a repair bay each, get patched up, and head back to the star, while he heads planetside on Finley 1 to talk to Henry about fleet's losses.
The Charybdis made the jump to the Dunov’s gravity well. Once the detection program had been decrypted, following the pirate vessel had been easy. This gravity well was a good location for the attack, as it was where the Dunov would repair and its crew have shore leave. They would be completely unprepared for Scylla’s attack. The Charybdis, in a burst of blue and white, arrived at the pirate asteroid, just to see the ruins of the pirate base, and parts of pirate ships drifting through space. However, what caught Scylla’s attention the most was the –UE_ fleet, bearing slightly different emblems to the ones at Portage, that was waiting around the exact point that the Charybdis had hit the gravity well. Scylla quickly gave orders to turn the ship around and flee, but the Charybdis shook as it was struck by an ion bolt from an Akkan. A report came to Scylla that something had landed on the hull of the ship, so it tapped into the video feed of a spider robot in the area of the intrusion. The spider hurried to investigate this vessel, as a section of the corridor wall was cut away, and a humanoid shape stepped out of the strange landing craft, seemingly unaffected by the fact that there was no oxygen inside the Charybdis. It couldn’t be human. The spider robot scanned it, and confirmed both biological and mechanical parts. Another cyborg? Scylla had little more time to think about this, as the figure raised a strange baton, and pressed a button on it. The possible cyborg collapsed as the visual feed from the spider cut off. Scylla suddenly felt a loss of control in all of its systems. As error report flashed on its HUD, Scylla collapsed to the ground, rendered immobile by what must have been an ion pulse, and its brain lost contact with its robotic body. Scylla and its robotic crew remained offline as the Charybdis was taken away by the –UE_ fleet.
Captain Siegel is consulting with his tactical officer when the helmsman calls his attention, "Sir, we have activity at the gate."
Siegel looks to the helmsman with confusion across his face, "Is anyone scheduled to come through?"
"No, sir. I have no clearance coming from the other side."
Siegel approaches his seat, but half way there, a Jarrasul Evacuator emerges from the gate, flanked by ten Skarovas Enforcers and eight Lansurak Transporters. With the red dots erupting on the holoprojector, Siegel dashes the remaining distance, yelling, "Red alert. All hands to battle stations!"
As the fleet, spread out in the space between the planet and the Vasari gate, begins to converge, the Aaron's broadside is exposed to the Jarrasul as it enters weapons range. The two begin to trade light blows until the Vasari vessel launches a blob of metal, constantly moving within its own structure, which passes clean through the Kol's shielding and slams into the hull, causing only a light shake with which to alert the crew to the blow.
"Sir, we've taken on nanites," the tactical officer alerts. "Armor plating on deck seventeen has been compromised. We're getting hull breaches in section twelve through fourteen."
"Evacuate the adjacent sections," Siegel orders. "Bring weapons to bear and disable that vessel."
The Aaron brings the port beam weaponry within their angle of attack and opens fire on the Vasari. Soon two Kols nearby come within range and engage the Jarrasul with full weaponry. With these arrivals, the Vasari support vessels swing into action, the fighters and bombers rushing ahead of the group to deliver phase missiles, many of which impact the hull of the Aaron. The Enforcers move to the head of the formation, engaging the three Kols while providing partial shielding for the Jarrasul.
The bridge rumbles beneath the feet of the Aaron's crew. Siegel now snaps his harness into place while saying, "Have the Samuel and Josiah catch those strikecraft on the second run. How far are the Elisha and Bathsheba?"
The helmsman replies, "Three and seven seconds out, respectively, sir."
The Vasari strikecraft turn in place, firing their engines hard to reverse their momentum. They come within striking distance of the Aaron and several fire off their weapons when burts of flak reach out from the two Kols on each side, enveloping their numbers in small explosions of hot metal. The density of the attack reduces an even half of their numbers into spinning wrecks. The Elisha arrives behind the attack, firing a beam of energy towards the Aaron to reinforce its shielding. The Cyrus and Bathsheba arrive simultaneously, one delivering additional fire into the fray and the other firing a high energy radio frequency bomb at the Jarrasul. The resulting impact releases a shockwave which pours over the tightly clustered Vasari vessels. The weapons fire begins to devastate the Vasari since the blast eliminated their shielding. The Jarrasul begins to turn about, only making a quarter turn before an ion bolt covers a great distance, pelting the round vessel in the rear and sending it into a drift.
The Transporters collect up their fighters and begin retreating through the gate as the Enforcers are cut down where they stand. Two Enforcers remain when the Jarrasul recovers power and continues its withdrawal. The Jarrasul reaches the gate as the last of its cover its reduced to rubble. Although a few shots manage to pockmark the Vasari capital, it escapes through the gate to wherever it came from.
With the threat gone, Siegel undoes his harness and proceeds to tactical, "Are the nanites still chewing through us?"
"No, sir. They stopped between sections ten and seventeen. Crews are on their way to assess the damage."
"Losses?"
His tactical officer shakes his head, "Too soon to tell, sir."
Siegel runs his fingers through his hair as he stares into space. After a moment, he turns to his communications officer, "Alert the fleets at Portage that the Vasari gate is not secure. Have all captains maintain yellow alert and divert resources to get our hull repaired."
"Yes, sir," the officer replies and begins relaying the messages through her headset.
Stationed at Portage IV, the David hovers near the phase path to the military planet while the Roesh Free Traders move their vessels about to service one capital after another. Alexander looks over a list of materials set to move when his tactical officer says, "Sir, I'm getting a phase signature coming from the star."
Alexander lowers the pad, "Are the slavers getting reinforcements?"
"No, sir. It appears to be a trade vessel of Vasari design. Not sure if it's a slaver vessel or another faction."
Alexander rises from his seat and approaches the tactical station, "Is there any chance that it's just an error?"
Frishman shakes his head, "No, the psidar is reading no discrepencies. It's clearly a phase jump."
"That makes things a little harder. Alright, keep an eye out for anything else coming in and log it. In the meantime, run a diagnostic. I don't want to find out we're shasing ghosts," Alexander orders.
"Sir," the communications officer interrupts, "Captain Siegel reports a Vasari attack came through the gate."
Alexander looks up, "Tell me you're joking."
"No, sir. They're maintaining yellow alert and beginning repairs."
Alexander rubs his eyes, "Alright, let Lord Arnoldt know that the Vasari gates are still connected to the network and that Portage III is getting support from another system. We might not be able to starve them out unless we come around from one of the Eras stars. Lieutenant Commander, work up a few plans in case we have to take care of the problem ourselves."
Affirmations come from both parties and they set to their task while Alexander departs to his ready room.

(Personal / DS) Tim walks into Henry's temporary office at the main town hall on Finley 1 and takes a seat opposite from him at the desk. "Any idea when Roesh and Todd are headed back?" Tim asks. "Not a clue. Whenever they're done is when they'll head back." Henry replies. Tim just sits there silent while nodding. "Something's bothering you?" Henry questions. "Yeah, the expedition didn't go to well." "How many? "All but the caps, and we barely made it out ourselves." "Ambush?" "Nah. Outgunned... Twice." "What are you gonna do? "Can't do anything except rebuild. Executive order, no more expeditions until we've had a chance to refit our ships. We can't keep getting beat up out there. We go in with plenty of numbers but our technology is just too far lacking and we get hammered. I keep running it through my mine... Those that survived are probably prisoners now. I want to get them back, but..." "But?" "But we'll just end up losing more. So we can't go." "Okay. I'll write up your orders and notify everyone that the fleet is assuming a defensive role only." "Thanks. Three days leave for those that came back. The ships should be repaired in a day, but I need a few days to figure out what we're going to do." "Got it. And I'll have Roesh find you as soon as he and Todd get back." "Thanks, Henry." "Any time." Tim stands up and leaves Henry's office quickly. Henry stands up and heads for the door and watches as Tim leaves. He crosses the hall and knocks on Molly Pierce's door before walking in. She looks up from the papers on her desk. "How are things on the planets?" Henry asks. "Going well I guess. Haven't heard any complaints. All of the moons around four of course are experiencing technical issues being so far away from the two main establishments... But we kind of expected that." Molly says. "What kind of issues?" "Just things being slow to arrive. I mean they're not really arriving slowly, but by comparison to the rest of the system, things are arriving slowly." "The research labs?" "All of them are up and running, staff is being assigned." "Good. Can we ignore infrastructure upgrades for the time being and focus solely on research for awhile?" "I believe so. We're well above expected population growth levels for now." "Alright. I'm reducing your supply rates and dumping them into R&D. You won't be getting them back until you show me numbers that we have to send focus back to the planets." "Okay. I'll try to give you at least a week's notice before things get to a point where they're a problem." Henry nods and walks out of the office and back to his. Sitting back down at his desk, he types up Tim's executive order and one of his own to Casey redirecting supplies to the research labs. After a minute, Casey calls him on the comms. "Oh yeah?" She asks. "I assume you got my orders." Henry says. "Yup. Rumor has it, fleet got their asses handed to them." "It's no rumor." Henry says as he pulls up fleet's repair logs on his screen. "Even Tim's a bit shaken up. He's genuinely bothered by this." "See, I keep telling you guys to stop playing pirate. Now you gotta pay for it." "You don't seem to mind when you're being offered a ship to captain." "Hey, when I get to call the shots, I do things my way. Sometimes you guys are just too reckless." "There was nothing reckless about this. The intel was fluctuating activity, and the report was light activity, and a respectable force was sent in." "So I see. I'm reading the reports right now. Shouldn't I be diverting supplies to fleet instead of R&D then?" "No. The repairs have three days to be made so there is absolutely no rush on that at all. We're pushing R&D to get up to par with what's out here. We've got lots of notes, and since Jacob got us a lot of civilian and support upgrades, we just need to spend some time working on military and getting back on respectable terms. According to the schedule Todd made before he left, he's got a lot of weapons and armor upgrades to oversee final tests on that he's been putting on hold due to us wanting other things handled first. So when he get's back, there's going to be lots of tests done and once those are complete, new prototypes will be built, and once those are tested, we can start retrofitting fleet division. Hopefully having piles of materials to work with will speed things up." "Okay. I'll start having supply crates sent into orbit." "Thank you." Henry says and then cuts the comm. He sit's back in his chair thinking about how much nicer things will be once the system is fully developed.
