Can anyone remember when we used to be explorers? - Jean Luc Picard
Maybe I am just feeling really sentimental because of the holidays but you guys are the best.
myfist0 what's the one thing the SOA2 team really wanted to add to the mod but ran into too many Sins related issues to make it a reality?
backs out of the room slowly...
Branching research paths is the only thing I can think of. You can do a branch, but not many branches.
What hasn't been done in SOA2 is replacing older era models with stuff designed for Sins, that's just not going to happen because there are so few modelers interested in doing it.
What Psy said.
Not enough modelers. Not enough free time. Burnt out. The old trekmods, and SFC/BC stuff was intended to be just placeholders until we could build our own sins specific meshes. The Ambassador, and Regula/SB 375 stations were the only meshes i built specifically for this mod. All my other stuff was made for HW/SFC mods that were converted over.
One thing that i wish Sins was capable of was animated textures on the ship meshes themselves (for things like animated bussards on the Sovereign, or heat effects on the impulse engines).
I guess everyone is more critical of their own work. Seriously you did a nice job on the models. And everything really. I have never played and said, "Jesus I'll just wait till they finish it." I've enjoyed it every step of the way.
I asked because I was listening to a member of another well known Star Trek mod and he was saying that the "Sin-ness" of the engine got in the way a lot.
Maybe for you modding guys it's more like Sins just won't put the cap back on the toothpaste and that slowly eats away at you until one morning the police arrive to find a grizzly scene.
From all of us, we who have benefited so greatly from your beneficence, our sincerest warmest hopes that you and yours have a trouble free life from here on out.
So say we all.
Boomshanka!
Sins definitely gets in the way of a lot of things, like intelligent ship behavior using fighter movement, but we knew there wasn't a way to make it be intelligent in the first place, so it's not something we wanted to do.
For most things I wanted to do and couldn't, Sins got the hell out of my way eventually, like AI that cloak in a useful manner.
TBH i am amazed you pulled off "legit" cloaking to begin with! The best i could hope for in the beginning was a bad "effect", and invulnerability until the effect ceased. It meant nothing because you can still see the ships on the empire tree, and on the map. You still can see the ship on the empire tree, but the way it is now adds to the suspense, because you cant see the ship itself on the map. Its perfect if you think about it. You know the ships are there, but you just cant find them.
Yeah, score one for the addition of invisibility in Rebellion.
You're right. It plays with your head a whole lot more to know something is there but not what or how many.
Just finished a 3 day game. Finally lost to the Borg when my allies acted like idiots and tried to kill each other while the Borg were strangling me.
I wish there was a more direct way to broker peace between allies. Starting with locked teams is good but I prefer the Diplomacy route. It's not as sure. But once I get to late game I really want the help against the Borg.
Enough Federation blood has been spilled over the petty squabbles of neighboring nations. If the Feds fall so shall we all.
Haha. Wow. I am always getting my ass kicked by the Borg. At least on large maps and one of the Borg opponents set to hard.
Get your Dip points up with your allies and order them where to attack defend. If one ally hates another ally, make them attack separate fronts.
Female Shapeshifter: Is something bothering you? Weyoun: Apparently, uh, I was under the mistaken impression that all Federation territories would fall under my jurisdiction, including Earth. Female Shapeshifter: And so they shall. Weyoun: But... you promised the Breen... Female Shapeshifter: I would promise the Breen the entire Alpha Quadrant, if I thought it would help win this war.
And so to politics I turn.
The "Founder" is wise in all things.
Are you referring to ship models? I have noticed some of them look impeccable (Galaxy class, Vor'cha class) while others don't look quite as detailed.
Yes, some of them are over a decade old, made for games back when we had 256 megs of ram if we were running serious hardware.
Yea you are referring to the old original Homeworld SoA models. They are indeed over a decade old, but we used them as placeholders until the time came to replace them (which has yet to happen). The old models pay homage to the original SoA. The mod of which SoA 2 is a continuation of. I wish i had the spare time. I also wish there were other modelers that would help, but i have been asking that since 2008. With silence in return.
Unfortunately I am not a modeler. What percentage of ships need work done?
100%
Some more than others, but ya, all of them.
Try not to take any of this personally. I am just making a statement in general. This is what 99.9999% of the responses we receive are when we ask for any kind of modeling help. Something along the lines of "I cant make a model, texture, or i can't mod at all, but I'll be more than happy to "play test" the beta for you". It has been that way since 2008 when the project started. Don't get me wrong. We appreciate the enthusiasm, but how does this help us?
To be brutally honest without new models then there Is Nothing to play test. The game play is pretty much done. Short of little things here, and there. So what we really need now are 3D, and 2D Artist. However very few artist over the past 6 years have volunteered. Their work shows, It's brilliant, and its Greatly Appreciated. I damn sure can't do it all by myself. I Tried! Not Happening.
And before you ask. Yes i have considered asking the Armada 3 team for help, and NO we are NOT merging the mods.
Unless we get new Art into SoA 2. We are pretty much stuck doing game play changes.
Major, if you didnt make anymore changes, the mod is pretty much spectacular as is. The amount of work done from people whos only compensation is their love of Star trek, is staggering. So I wont bother telling you Id like to help but I dont know how, I'll just thank you and be appreciative for what the mod is, not what it isnt. Cause its gold as is.

Understood. No offense taken.
I also echo SilentWolff's thoughts.
Ok. As I love this mod and I want to contribute somehow even though I am not a modeler I have a cousin who is a professor at Iowa State University and teaches classes in graphic design.
I talked to him about it and he says although many of the students are looking for internships he would post it on their Facebook page to see if anyone is interested. What contact info should I include?
I'll run this post by myfist0, our contact email is soa2 at hotmail.ca.

Modding is a great way to get into actual development. If anyone can improve on my art, or other art, I am quite happy to see this mod and the team grow.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
