A demo of me playing Master of Magic.
There’s a lot that game designers can learn from Master of Magic. In this video demo, I walk through a few of the mechanics of the game.
I agree a lot with the previous post, but I would love to see Elemental have easy tools of customization to make the game as balanced (Or unbalanced) as we'd like it. I know there will be a whole segment of beta dedicated to modding, but being able to have a lot of power just within a pre-game customization options is always great to have.
I don't think that two planes are automatically better than one.
What the 2-plane mechanic created were both choke points in an otherwise open map and at the same time backdoors to be aware of.That made them an interesting gameplay feature - not the mere fact of having more than one map.
Rules were also slightly different. Myrran had magical roads but also a more dangerous - if richer - environment.
I don't see why WOM should not use the good elements from that while discarding the annoying and clear workarounds.
Since maps are all pre-generated anyway, nothing would prevent the game from having an entire "magical and dangerous" continent. It would be divided from the rest of the game by the ocean with only the odd flying / waterwalking creature straying from it.
That would also make ships useful in any way.Alternatively it would be surrounded by a magical border that you have to breach first. That would require magic and ships.
To conquer that continent would mean a greater possibility of magical resources / shards, temples... whatever. Kinda like defeating the Guardian of Orion.
woah, a necro post!
You've got some decent feedback Gazz, but that might be better put in a new thread or into a more directly on-topic thread in the 'ideas' or the general forum rather than 5 pages in on video demo thread that hasn't had a post since May-16th (and it now being november) and when the discussion for the last couple pages of the thread doesn't exactly in sync with what you wanted to add.
Your ships comment could be a thread of its own separate from the discussion of 2-plane mechanics. Perhaps you should collect your thoughts and post them somewhere more people would read them.
I hadn't seen this post, thanks to whoever resuscitated it
But seeing it now just gives makes me reel at how things went to badly on launch. I guess Bard already admitted he went on a frenzy in the end.
Here's to hoping that Elemental will EVENTUALLY get the it's appropriate injection of MOM. I've shelved the game for now, after destroying the AI with no effort repeatedly. But I'm looking forward to the improvements 1.1 will bring. I just hope it won't be "too little, too late".
With all the support promised for the game I can't help but be hopeful, but I'm always weary.
Again, I hope that the new infusion of talent into this title will bring what should have been.
Cheers,
V.
....so why doesnt this game more resemble MOM?
MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY... (Yes, all caps)
I mean, come to think of it, I don't like the person who resuscitated this necro post. I know that MOM was an inspiration, but I didn't know Brad had it and "played it". And he even says "Game developers have a lot to learn from MOM"... I guess he was a prophet of his own doom.
This is the best video of MOM I've seen yet! I've never played it before, but Brad makes it look really good.
Honestly, doesn't this video seem a little scary to anyone else? I mean, what features did he show? Like, decorations around dialog boxes, and the fact you can, uh, cast things and do basic empire management? Other than hitting peoples nostalgia button, did this video really show us anything, other than Brad not really knowing what he's talking about?
I think it's more the point of where you know the ins and outs of a game to the point where you can't really explain how it works anymore because you just dont think about it.
I get that with some stuff I used to play growing up
Oh, I think the video showed us a great deal. Same lesson as the video Frogboy did on EWoM. He showed us how to attack and get slaughtered. Now thats candid honesty. And he show us something important that MOM and EWOM have in common: Attacking can get you killed. Is that the proof that EWoM is the successor of MOM?
The idea of Myrror was what I always considered the coolest part of MoM.
