From what it looks like, FPS games seem to be going downhill. Many "modern" FPSes seem to be oriented around a very basic singleplayer campaign and "extensive" online multiplayer, where one is supposed to primarily play. I'm not saying that that's a bad thing necessarily, but I would prefer a more balanced approach between singleplayer campaign/"instant action" and LAN/online multiplayer.
Another trend that seems to be appearing is that FPSes are starting to become more and more of a "wreak wonton violence and destruction" and "kill everything in my way" games. I'm not saying that certain games that are like this are necessarily bad (sometimes it IS fun to kill everything in one's way or wreak wonton destruction upon the other players (or even the map)), but when that is the ONLY thing that EVERY (or almost every) game is based on, it is a problem.
On the flipside, other games, like action, adventure, RPG, RTS, 4X, etc. etc. seem to be getting more complex, deeper, more "open-ended" gameplay that immerses the player in multiple avenues of objective completion. As opposed to the "kill everything" approach of most mainstream FPS games.
Not all FPS games follow this pattern (older Battlefield titles, and others are an example; older Battlefield is also the golden age of EA you could say), but many modern and upcoming titles seem to be going this route more and more.

I don't think the FPS genre is going downhill... I just think the most popular titles are fairly uninspired when it comes to gameplay mechanics. If anything, games like STALKER and ArmA prove that FPSs are still being refined.
In this day and age, really, it's difficult to find a genre that can go downhill... the market is such that if people demand a niche game they can probably get something fairly good from somebody, let alone just to go retro. On RPGs alone you've got from Mount and Blade to Dragon Age... both good RPG games that couldn't be more different from each other. And to think 10 years ago everyone was predicting "the death of RPG gaming" or that RPGs would essentially be replaced with Diablo clones (which, btw, was a pretty legitimate concern for while).
You know what genre is going downhill? RTS games. I haven't heard anything really bold from those guys in a while, Starcraft excepted.
Well, it's mostly because the RTS genre itself is fairly narrowly defined. You can't get much more complex than Starcraft & company without either sacrificing a bit of the 'real time' aspect or the 'strategy' part (well, Sins did it but that's because its pacing is so slow it may as well have been turn-based). But for examples of very innovative ideas in the wider strategy genre, check out Paradox' Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron series, Sega's Total War series and Best Way's... however its series is called of which Men of War is a part of.
The correct answer. FPS has always been the WORST genre of gaming.
What genre? Games from a first person perspective or FP 'shooters'?
I've seen ultima underworld described as a FPS, not to mention System shock 1 and 2. What about rainbow six or swat 4? OFP? The truth is people see FPS and think "OMG SHOOTY SHOOTY BANG BANG KIDDIE GAMES!" and define all games from first person perspective as such. This is studpidity, first person games have seen some of the largest inovation and quality in all games.
Doom3 however is just Doom2 with pretty, black, graphics - but thats all most people wanted.
hehe...though i thank you, that's not quite what I was thinking of, it really is the first person vibe I'm after. Kind of like rpg/fps balance that deus ex achieved. I don't enjoy the 3rd person mechanic, or gamepads for that matter.
There's a reason I put the 'S' in there.
While I admit I find the FPS genre to be a little stale, it still works. People buy them and play it for hours and hours and hours on end. Look at halo or modern warfare.
I do admit, I would want to see someone come with a change in the genre that makes it even better. Like how Half-Life combined FPS with platforming. =D
Cheers mate, I'll check it out
In spite of the admitted shortcomings set forth by Raven X, I find Borderlands lets me do what I want. Get out there quick and run around killing stuff. I moved to Borderlands after overdosing on Dragon Age. Fewer RPG elements the better.
My next stop will probably be Painkiller!
Unless the Naruto mod, whatever that is, grabs hold of me.
FPS games have gone from PC to Console kinda, Pc is still great because of mods for games, Cod6 is fun but with the match making system you only have like a 1/8 chance of getting a good host.
stragety are what i started playing and i will die playing but dukenukem 3d was the greatest fps i have ever played even still better then most of the stuff out today.
Yeah, I've kinda migrated/converted to strategy. While I will always love my FPSs (I started out on the FPS), strategy seems to have stolen my heart. That, and the space sim.
Worst case scenario is that it's all cyclical.
Currently, RPG's seem to be king with the BioWare blockbusters ME and DA, and Fallout was a huge success. They have been for a few years now.
Strategy games seem to be on the rise this year with Civ5, Elemental, Starcraft 2.
FPS finished their cycle a couple of years ago with Crysis, CoD, etc. Things have been a bit stagnant lately, but they will turn around. Borderlands is awesome, Bioshock 2 just hit the shelves, and Battlefield Bad Company comes out next month. That may spark interest.
I'd say all three genres are strong and for the most part maintain a high level of product, but they will fluctuate occasionaly.
