I was wondering if any of you have tried the new game Armada 2526? It seems very promising. I like that the game focuses a lot on macro management and quick play instead of coping with tedious micro management and long ship battles and ship designing aspects (various weapon types etc..). I also like it because it is tbs instead of rts like Sins. It will be better playable on laptops as a result (I presume). Unfortunately, there are no reviews available yet. Only a preview of IGN. That's why I am hoping for your reviews/impressions. Thanks a lot in advance!
Been working on one for a few nights now. Almost done.
Great. I am looking forward to it!
Still waiting for Armada 2526 to release on Impulse..............
I find it quite strange that there are no reviews available of this game. I hope they come soon.
This game seems to have flown under the radar of a lot of people. I didn't hear about it until seeing posts about it here asking when it was going to be on Impulse. I like it so far and look forward to how it progresses. The Devoloper reminds me a little of SD back when I got into GC2, involved in the community and seemingly committed to furthering the game based on listening to the players.
After seeing a couple of threads asking about it on Impulse and the official site saying it's on there, I'm surprised not to see anyone form SD chime in and least give a "We're working on it.". Usually even if they can't speak of a certainty they'll at least give some indication of the status of getting it up.
There's more then a few reasons for that I think. Partly because it's been put out by a smaller developer, partly because it's not getting any shelf space in stores. There's also a lot of little things still wrong with the game in my oppinion which you'll see when you read the review I'm putting up later tonight.
Don't get me wrong, it's a decent game. It's HIGHLY moddable which is a good thing. It still needs a lot of work in some areas though.
Your comment can be have apply to sins when it was released... but after one year, sins have earn the status of "game of the year"...
2526 have a lot of potential but it cannot evolve... single core, 32 bits... a lot of "out of memory" once you play big map... We are at the end 2009, any computer sell at your vegetable store is minimum multicore and 64 bits... the engine of this game have can be good if made several year ago...
I have not ask a refund because i have enjoy the game but i have not play the game since my last post ( there where i say that the majority of my problems are resolved )... these game have potential but problems are numerous and are not resolved fast enough... maybe i am used from stardock who make a hot patch in the 24 hours after release but for 2526, there is problems and no patch since the release...
Sounds like the game was a victim of 'Holiday Release Rush'. It clearly could have used a couple more months of work to hammer out all the bugs, but the publisher said 'too bad, ship it NOW'. If Impulse is withholding on carrying it because they were not satisfied the release version meets standards, then that's another point for Impulse in my books. Patch support for small independent companies is going to be dubious at best, so I am glad to see Impulse denying them 'shelf space' until they can prove the game is stable and playable from start to finish without major incident.
I think the problem is that it's a small developer. So small that it doesn't have anyone in marketing.
Armada 2526 is finally available on Impulsedriven.com

Anyone who played it have a quick review for it? There's barely any information on it, and it's bit pricey to take a random gamble on.
Bit pricey !!! For European people, it is almost the half of the price on Impulse that on Matrix game !!!
You wish a quick review !!! Let go... don't buy it until they release they first patch... the game have a lot of potential but a huge memory leak plag it... if you forget to save in time, will you soon seen the usual "not enough memory for save" !!! In fact, i consider the game to be a huge beta... a lot of thing was promise for the first patch but we are always waiting these patch... they seem not to be fast like Stardock/Ironclad for correct problems...
The game in itself is interesting, specialy if you are more strategie that graphic... if you buy it, for the time being, limit yourself on standart map and regulary save your game... once memory problem appear, simply stop and restart the game and load the save game... be aware that the game is not like sins, and not like any totalwar... and modding is really not practical now since you can only mod on your original file ( not modding directory )...
If there is no or almost no official review of the game, it is simply because nothing in the game is worthy one... there is nothing special in these game... no super AI, no online game, no good graphic, and a few problems !!! To be honest, when i play with it, it seem that i am back to the time of DOS game, 3D battle are more like a good old space invader...
Positive point are a potential huge universe ( i wrote potential because the memory leak make it difficult )... almost all file can be modded ( all if you use a special xls file for generate new one for the few who was in binary )... research trre is good and complex... and diplomacy is enough good too...
EDIT : almost forget... if you have a Nvidia graphic card, you are obligate to play with everything on the lower setting... else it crash at the first battle !!!
Oh dear. Sounds like I will pass completely on this then. Thanks for the review/warning.
that was no review, just stupid trashing.
In fairness, if the game has some severe bugs then I don't care how good or bad the game is when it's working. If I hear the devs release a couple patches to fix things, I will look for more thorough opinions then. Until then, all I really needed to know is 'game is highly unstable, stay away'.
Can you explain what it is "just stupid trashing" ?
Is there or not a memory leak ?
Is there or not problem with Nvidia card ?
Is there a mod folder or do you need to modify the original files?
For info, review are not only about positive side, negative side need to be exposed too... this game can become a good game only if problem are resolved... and sure, it is not with using the word "stupid" that problem will be resolved...
By the way, in place of insult the post of someone other, what stop you to make you own honest review ?
Hi guys! I was also curious to try out Armada 2526 but as many of you pointed out already there are not yet a great deal of reviews out there (no gamespot review, gamespy, etc ...)
So I decided to make my own Armada 2526 Review, well its rather a First Impressions. Its not a full review yet since I'm only playing the game for 2 days
Yes, the game still has some things that need to be taken care of. Some more information needs to be squeezed in, plenty of user interface polishing and tweaking to be made, but generally speaking the game is already quite solid. I'm having fun playing it, and I mean fun of being addicted fun. I consider this game better than Sword of the Stars.
Hope this first impressions is useful for you.
Cheers
Adam

While I agree with most of your points, I find this one a little perplexing. Is it only certain cards? I have a GTX260 ran it with graphics full and experienced no crashes with the battles.
Part of the memory issues also seem to stem from being able to create too large a galaxy and running up against the 32bit 2GB limit. That's something that seems like it will be hard to solve without scaling back the available sizes.
Good thing is that the Devs seem involved in the community and listening to feedback. How this translates to improvements only time will tell. With how small the developer is I wouldn't look for any overnight miracles in the patch department though.
It is really a good review related to the gameplay...
Maybe a little detail about the population thing... if you have a planet fully builded and move some of the population to a other planet, some of your building will shutdown because they have not enough personel for work... it is a little detail but something who add realism...
I think that it is more related to the driver version that the card itself... it seem that only people with the last official version of the nvidia driver have problem... for now, the only common thing is that people with these problem share a Nvidia card... myself, i have a Nv 8800 ultra and a 9600 Gs... and for both gard, i have no problem... but i use the CUDA version of the driver, beta version...
In fact, sins itself have know problem at the launch too... there was a Nvidia problem who was resolved by a new driver version, or a Vista problem who was resolved by a microsoft kb update...
So, it is very possible that the problem is externe... but something like this have can be detected in the Beta testing periode if these was more long and using more beta tester...
With standart map, you have the same problem... it is more related to time that size... start a game, make a few turn and be busy with something other for a few hours... come back and the game will have grow near the 2gb limit... simply save and reload the game can resolve the memory use... having a game using almost 1.6gb and beginning have the "short in memory" message, i have save it and reload it... result was a game only using 300-400 mb...
Yes, Devs or/and distributor seem to be good involved in their respective forum... Ntronium being newcomers, i don't know them but i know Matrix game... i have other game from them and 10 years after, they are always making patch... not always for correct bug but in some case, for expend unit database or new way the AI work...
The small devs is not a excuse... Ironclad is a small devs and they are able to release a patch for sins in case of problem, 24 hours after the previous patch !!! I think that it is more a money problem... Sins have become a world success very fast, since money was good due to success, it is more easy to have people working on patch... Armada was almost not noticed, i am not sure that the sale are big annd so, it mean more lower money income... if no enough money is earn, devs will not begin to work for free... so, it can be possible that these game will never have any patch !!! And i really hope that i am wrong because these game have a huge potential... the majority of the actual problem have can be resolved with a bigger and longer Beta phase... for compare, see how long are the beta phase for the expension of sins of solar empire ( Entrenchment, Diplomacy )...
@adamsolo
Thank you for the review. I have decided not to buy the game, but play Sins and homeworld instead. Have fun though.
Your avatar says it all The Homeworld series was really a blast!
So I guess that you are more into the RTS part of space strategy games right? Armada 2526 is more for people that played Master of Orion 1, 2, Space Empires, Star Trek BOTF and the Galactic Civilizations series, i.e. the pure 4x space strategy afficionados. But if you like the 3D real-time battles and if you also liked to play pure 4x in the past than you should consider giving Armada 2526 a try. When properly patched it will be a great sucessor for the former titles.
The devs are already working on it: http://ntronium.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=376.0
The next patch will cover the following.Improved Bureaucracy. Effect reduced and capped. Scales with size of map. Additional settings to reduce or disable.Mod System. Fully or partially replaces files for mods. Use multiple mods at once. Even supports mods for mods.Cost and factor re-balance to increase fleet sizes and make ground units more important.Ability to place transports under ai control to automatically distribute population. Immigration and emigration controls for each planetHopefully, some improvement in problems saving large games.Saves custom game settingsShould be done early in the new year. The patch after will probably be concerned with the followingBug fixesImproved UI featuresMore things exposed for modders, plus one or two feature requestsImproved A.I.

In fact, I like both type of games a lot. Just recently I play more rts games as I don't have the time to play tbs. I own Galciv 2 and ST BOTF. They are both very good games, In 4x RTS games I don't like to have tactical ship combat as I like to have strategy (and not mouse clicking) to decide the game. Fortunately, this is the case in Galciv2, although I would prefer to have pre-designed ships. I don't like the micro management so much. I agree with your critique on the UI of Armada 2526, it looks terrible.
Sorry for disapointing some people, but for me Armada 2526 doesn't feel fun. Thats how the game is now for me.
Armada 2526 is mostly compared with MoOII, but when you play MoOII do you feel the love in the Grafik, A2526 is just cold and sterile.
The tech tree is strange, I dont like it to research a given Ship, I prefer to reserch the Hull, the Engine, the weapons and the Defense for itself and then put it together in my own style. (The tech tree of MoOII is still the best with so much diversity and decisions to make.) Another strange point is, that you have to build first the higher Tech(Biosphere) that you can build the lower tech, which you have to resarch to get the higher tech, but is absolutly useless until you build the higher tech.
The Battles are just chaotic and loveless.
So the whole game feels half baked.
I hope further patches will make this game to a lil 4X jewel. But I'm a little bit bit afraid that it wouldn't be enough for me.
Fimbul got it right. The battle section is broken, got to auto battle everything. The hardness of the game is locked into "Pain", trying to keep a colony happy is not possible. I had such high hopes for this, I was ready for a MOO like game and having a designer with a popular game behind him looked like a winner. Such a disappointment.
