The team is working on getting Impulse ready to handle pre-loads so that some of the upcoming large-scale titles can be installed onto people’s machines prior to release and then enabled on launch day.
One of the other features is the support for Windows 7 Jump Lists. These features were originally planned to be all part of Impulse: Phase 5 but the desire to get pre-loading in for the holidays moved what we were working on up.
This should go to the public in the next couple weeks.
Nice. Preloading is sorely missed. Really glad to see this getting added in soon! Thanks!
Thanks, preloading is a big one. Now you guys just need to get more AAA titles that people will want to pre-order.
Excelent. I'm sure that'll be handy when Elemental launches.
When will you add preload prediction, so I can download games I haven't bought yet but you know I will?
Awesome news.
Hah, good one!
As for the topic, yay StarDock. /fanboymodeoff
Heck ya! Finally this will save alot of trouble in future releases!
How many years before that actually happens? or better yet your computer playing on the stock market with loose change, (or your savings) and saving up to buy you a game it thinks you'll like? I can see preload prediction working: If you've got a TB free it'll download every game on your 'games you may also like' list when the network's quiet. Then give you subtle reminders that you haven't bought the game yet but should. Things like: Computer: "did you know: With your computer you could play *insert game* on maximum settings? Don't believe me? demo's downloaded... try it" Computer: "well... I say demo... I bought the game for you... but if you don't like it I can deactivate it... I downloaded a few others too, but I haven't activated them yet"
I wouldn't mind my computer auto-downloading demos of new releases, actually - if we could just get a smart way of figuring out when I'm not using my computer and no one else is using my internet connection, I'd be all for it.
I suppose without any fiddly software you could manually set it. When you are about to leave your computer for a while click an "idle-automate" or "away-automate" button in impulse and let it do stuff for you. I wouldn't want it to be automatic as I sometimes use mobile internet connections and there's a useage limit. To be honest it's not a problem with a high speed connection but if your connection is slow or the demo is in GBs, like demigod or higher, then I wouldn't mind the computer automatically downloading a new demo that's been uploaded to impulse. When it's best for the server, not the moment it's uploaded. I think that's the main thing.
lol it'll be the "TiVo" of computer gaming. Maybe call it "CompVo"?
Automatic downloading of demos! The next huge waste of bandwidth, brought to you by strange people
