I finally got a chance to play some serious Sins of a Solar Empire: Diplomacy today. I’ll get more to into it over the coming days when Object Desktop gets released and the Elemental beta gets out the door.
But I was really pleased at how fun Sins of a Solar Empire continues to be. I’m biased but the game really has amazing depth.
Now, the first thing I noticed about Diplomacy was the option for “faster” which I think will be one of the features that people like a lot since it really helps move the game along.
I’d like to see the Diplomacy tech tree fleshed out more. I’ll write more soon on that.
I agree. I had down time in between games before Dragon Age came out and I fired up Sins for the first time in months and played 4 games. It was even funner then I remember it. To me that is super value in a game when I can play it 2 or 3 years later (or 5-6 yrs later) and it still feels fresh and fun.
I actually just got the game last month, and I'm just loving it. I'd hesitated for a long time, partly because I'm not the biggest RTS fan, but also because I spend most of my time on GalCiv2. I need to grab Entrenchment still, but I'm most excited about Diplomacy. In fact, it was excitment over seeing what Diplomacy was going to add that made me finally break down and buy the GOTY edition. Can't wait to hear more about it!
It still amazes me that Im expected to pay £30 for a 6 hour game and £30 for a 60 hour game. I don't remember how much time I've spent in Civ, GalCiv, Mount&Blade, Sins, X3 or Arma1/2 but those acount for less than 1% of my game purchases but WAAAYY more play time.
Fun games are probably the best value for money on the planet.
damn straight!
I bought a copy of Sins six months ago but haven't had time to boot it...looking forward to doing so in 2010 and grabbing the expansions.
What's wrong with Frogboy? He's not trashing Stardock!
But yeah, Sins has been my best game purchase ever. I've spent hundreds of hours on it.
I've sunk way too many hours into Sins. Easily one of my favorite RTS titles.
Mike
I'm not so sure about that. I'm thinking of something else that's fun, that's free.... Of course it may not be free when you factor in the cost of dinner, horse carriage ride...diamond ring...kids....

I havent played sins in soooooo long but im planning to come back to it again.
But when i think about it. I never got bored of this game before. Its just that games are hard to find on multiplayer or they sometimes take up too much time. Thats all.
I never really got into Sins. It sounds like lots of fun, and I love the art style and concept, but somehow I just don't "grok" the gameplay. I've never been very good at RTS games, but after a while I can usually develop a sense of what I'm supposed to be doing at any given time. That hasn't happened yet with Sins, and I'm not sure why. Maybe the slower speed is throwing me off, or maybe it's how tiny everything looks.
Either way, it's frustrating because I feel like I'm missing out on all the fun.
Well maybe it just isnt your type of game. What do you like to play?
I need a good computer for the other stuff I want to do. Having it game capable (latest at least) is only a few hundred £s every three years. Thats far less than the cost of the bad to mediocre games I buy every year.
Well, I started with Starcraft, which I played a fair bit but was never very good at. Then I became a beta tester for a little-known indie RTS game called Strifeshadow, and eventually managed to become reasonably good at it despite starting out as officially the second-worst player in the community. The game never caught on and LAN play never worked properly, but it's still my all-time favorite RTS game. Last I heard, they were willing to open-source it if someone was willing to go in and rip out all the proprietary networking code for them.
After that I got hooked on Tribes 2 (complex team-based strategic FPS), then Mechwarrior 4:Mercenaries (mech combat sim), then Jumpgate for a few years (MMO space combat sim). After that I moved to Civilization 4 and Guild Wars, gave up Civ4 for GalCiv2, tried Team Fortress 2 for a few months (it made me miss Tribes 2), and now I'm having lots of fun with multiplayer SupCom over LAN. Oh, and every once in a while I become completely obsessed with Dwarf Fortress.
Everything I've heard about Sins makes it sound like I should absolutely love the game. 4X strategy? Great. Epic space battles? Awesome. Huge Russian-flavored space fleets? I don't even have a word for that one.
But when I try to play it...
I should probably just log on to multiplayer and ask if anyone would be willing to walk me through a match or two. Pestering the devs to add a "make unit tree icons not all look the same" option wouldn't hurt, either.
Jalios... you might want to take a look at one of those stickies in the stratigy section of the SOASE section... one has a google doc which shows preety much everything behind the scenes... and you can easily see what counters what. In the crazyness of multiplayer you need to know what counters what, and be agressive... honestly there is not alot of spare resoruces for economy growth and research.
Dwarf fortress is awesome. (cant wait for the next patch... ohh... that remides me i havent checked the dev log yet today...)
