I have been very pleased with fences (free) and have a few questions about Fences Pro:
- I use my machine in several different ways (doc editing, web editing, web browsing, game playing etc.), and can see the value in being able to switch between several status' that would exclude different fences from quick hide (and perhaps change what they look like). Will this be possible?
- When working I have a fairly regular schedule, would I be able to set certain fences to appear between certain times?
- I often download lots of files that have different extensions but an identical component in their names, can I have these auto fenced or can I only do that with extensions (eg bluesite.test.zip bluesite.costings.xls bluesite.records.pdf or img_cannon_020809_01.psd img_cannon_020809_01.jpg)

You could do this by creating and restoring different snapshots.
This will not appear in Fences Pro, at least not the first version.
You should be able to do this with the sorting in fences Pro.

I will probably end up buying Fences Pro (I'm thinking of going the whole hog with stardock apps anyway) but I was really hoping for an easy way to swap between different fence configurations but I was expecting you to say no to this one what with OD+ not having that kind of functionality. Are there any arguments I can use to load a specific snapshot when I load fences? And on that are there any to do the same for OD+?

For Fences, no, because there's not really any loading of an application. Fences is essentially a .dll loaded into explorer, not a .exe file run like Object Dock.
For ObjectDock, there aren't arguments that can be used to load different profiles, but you could create batch files to run instead of running the .exe directly that would copy specific configuration files into place and then run ObjectDock.
