So I've been playing Demigod since about 2 weeks after it came out, and only online. I played every night this summer and now that the school year has started (I'm a teacher) I play a few games on the weekends. I have about 150 games. I feel like I play a fair amount of Demigod (less now that L4D2 is out). What are the lives of people with 500+ games like? Are we talking college students, basement-dwellers or what? I'm not trying to attack anyone's lifestyle, I just am curious (and somewhat jealous) how anyone has time for that many games?
And while we're at it, can we agree to stop using the designation "Pro?" "Pro" means "professional" meaning you get paid to do said thing. College football players are very good at football, but they are not "pros" because they don't get paid (well they aren't supposed to anyway). Are any of these "pros" out there actually getting payed to play DG? I mean call yourself what you want, "Expert," "pwner," whatever, but labeling yourself a pro at a videogame is kinda silly.
Me and Obscenitor are pro.
I guess a pro player in DG is someone who has arbitarily decided he is better than most other players, despite there being very little (nigh on nil) way of proving it, in the form of organised tournaments, ladders or leagues.
The way I can explain my 600+ games is I'm a firefighter. I work 10 24 hour days a month so I have a lot of free time, and since my friends and girlfriend all have 9-5 jobs, and the surf isn't always going, I play a lot of Demigod.
When I bought a new gaming laptop about 6 months back, I read a little about this game and thought it would be fun to try out. Now I'm addicted, though not so much that I play at work anymore. I tried a few times and its a sure way to have the tone go off for a call.
Have to agree with OP with respect to 'pro'. A 'pro' here is not like a 'pro' in e.g. Starcraft, where 'pro' = 'professional' = actually makes money by playing the game. 'Expert' is probably a better term.
I wish I knew my actual game count including beta!!! But then I work a Full time job as a Senior Mechanical Engineer/Cad-Administrator and also run a Breeding Horse farm in my spare time from farming, kids activities, and the wife I play Demigod a little. If people are kind and concede when it is pointless you can play a lot more games!!!!
I only have around 75 games, and I feel like I have played quite a bit since the game was released. So, I can see how someone would be perplexed and wonder about the gamecount accrual of other players. I do think though, that if you consider that some games only last about 2 minutes, then this number can get very high, very quickly. I am an attorney, I have a wife and a 12 month old. I don't have much time to do what I enjoy (though I do enjoy spending time with my family and dog). When I am doing what I enjoy it is usually playing RTS's or golf.
As for the language discussion. I had a problem with the nomination of Pro to mean someone who is good until i considered common language in the other direction. I hear quite a bit that someones actions are amateur. Especially from people who don't make money in the field to which their applying the nomenclature. It seems only fair that if someone who is not actively seeking to make money in a field can be called amateur for their actions by other amateurs, then someone who is superior in skill and makes few "amateur" mistakes could be called a "pro." Now, if we want to have a discussion about abused vocabulary then stay tuned. Why in the world do people call ditsy blonde girls "vapid." That is not what the word means. If you hear this usage, please ask the person to explain, find a dictionary, or desist their amateur usage of the english language. Please send them to an attorney, or to baddaddy, who does indeed make money in his mastery of the english language and is therefore a Pro.
Honestly I didn't know that. I never really paid much attention to rankings and games and such till the overlay, so that was when I really started to see my game total. Thanks for clearing that up. That makes a little bit more sense.
Sigh.
Precisely my point is embedded in here. There ARE professional gamers. They play tournaments or test games for money. They are Pros. So when we use the word to describe people who don't do that, it adds unnescessary confusion.
Not at all. I would be kind of embarassed if I was. I mean I like winning as much as the next guy, but it is a videogame.
Now, Left 4 Dead 2 is a different story (not that I'm a pro at that either).
Thank you.
It wasn't meant to be, people just took it the wrong way. I was looking for replies like the guy on page 2 who is a firefighter. Simple explanation, and I say, "Oh gee, so thats how he does it." I never questioned anyone's lifestyle, people get really offended because I think they are used to getting their lifestyle questioned.
What an intellegent reply. Oh wait, he's an attorney. Surprise, surprise.
And sounds exactly like my life except I make 1/4 what you do. : ) But I do have more time off.
I hope you teach PE.
I feel offended! You copy pasta'd all the other posts AROUND mine yet skipped me It sure does suck when someone who doesn't work in your field explains something about it that you should know but obviously don't know.
You must be on the grammar side of English though, so it's no biggie.
Not to defend someone who isn't guilty; but, under the professional error theory, professionals are the most prone to simple mistakes. Speed and frequent application causes the person to make these errors. It is not uncommon for me to forget a simple procedure issue and I would think the same of spelling and grammar for the teacher.
Now, can someone please move this into the off-topic realm. We've left the subject and are heading for a bridge where trolls reside.
By the way, regarding the "Professional" discussion. askoxford says that a "Professional" is
Personally I never thought that the word "professional" would only describe something or someone where a paid activity is involved. Even in the german language the word is frequently used with non-paid activities (even though the original meaning of the professional, der Profi or Proffessionist is someone who gets paid for a particular activity), as in someone who is really good at a particular activity.
Not to be picky Spooky, but I'm not sure you can rely purely on one source for definitive definitions for argument purposes. For example, I could have posted what wiki says "professional" means and it would have stated the opposite of what you have here. I'm not saying that one is superior over the other, because there is no way to quantify or qualify one dictionary against the other in all contexts. I'm just suggesting that using a single citation as the endall of debate is usually not sufficient to close arguments.
Sorry RAWRRRR. Your post looked to me like Pandora's Box. I really appreciated your feedback on my other post and said so.
Intelligent. Ooops. Yes, teachers who grew up with spell check are just as reliant on it as everyone else. Especially when you are trying to reply to several posts quickly so you can get back to playing Demigod. (If I used the word "neccessary" anywhere or "success" I probably misspelled those too. I however, don't have a problem being imperfect, which might shock all those flawless flamers out there who sit behind their computers and snipe away at the tiniest mistake.)
And yes, this Post is sooooo dead. It makes me laugh when I go to the forums and see like 6 more replies. I try to not read them, but it has become kind of like a car wreck, and after a few minutes I have to look.
I think I can agree with almost all of that Spooky. So, at this point, can we have a moderator conclude that there is agreement and that this post has nothing to with the game anymore?
pfft Spooky, words can't change or take on new meaning. Where would you ever get such a crazy idea?
Also, ya I realized that was you in the other post BadDaddy... felt kinda conflicting berating you here and sharing strats liek old friends there lol. Oh well... guess I ruined my semi-trolling here by helping there... damnit >.<
