Regarding this thread https://forums.wincustomize.com/367136/page/5 post 105
Most certainly contradictory.
This post is not intended to cause divison but to serve only as an example and to segway into what I personally believe is an important discussion as we look forward to the new WC2k site.
Perhaps I'll get flamed, blamed, insulted, I hope not, I hope that you all can see my points and discuss this like adults.IMO.. anyone should be able to say what they like in any skin submission, Anyone with half a brain and a bit of common sense can tell a whether they like a skin or not from its representative screenshot. If someone wants to say my skin looks like some MS default skin, knock yourself out, but PLEASE don't tell the rest of us, any of us that what was good for goose the isn't good for the gander. No one should have any right to say they cannot or that if they leave a negative comment that it must be accompanied by qualified critique. The best critique I ever got was 'this skin sucks" and other pretty similar vicious remarks. We either have the right to free speech here.. or we don't.Question - How is it that someone (WC Mod) can say that a person who has not purchased and used a skin has no business commenting on it, then proceed to accuse people of being destructive or doing it to sound big, when they did exactly the same thing just a few days earlier.Strikes me as biased at the very least. It is also not the first time it has happened, I could list quite a few more of these types of comments in my threads but I wont. It really is an aside from my broader point but something that I didn't appreciate nonetheless.Basically, to stifle any kind of commenting on skins is just plain wrong, to allow only positive comments leads to nothing but "Looks Great!" type comments. When this happens, I do believe skinners might think.. Everyone says I'm great.. so i must be!
Imo, this just fosters apathy and contentment that can lead to a skinner not being motivated to push themselves any harder than they have to.I believe the entire WC community is \ has been a victim of this type of mentality and I for one would like to see it move towards more realistic feedback in the galleries and forums.I think there should be an option on the new site that give the skinner an option to choose to receive 'Advanced Critque'. This option would show they are willing to take the hard knocks and the tough love that some of us have learned to appreciate in our path to being more technically competent skinners and artists. Those who only want candy coated, mushy, look at me comments... can choose to not accept the option.
Of course anyone would be able to say what is on their mind regardless of which option the submitting artist chose but just having the submissions labeled as 'Willing to receive advanced critique' will show who is willing to receive the harsh, more in depth and indeed.. negative.. stuff as well as the more common ego boosting comments.. This policy was implemented on DA and I believe is a very good idea.
We shouldn't have to fear stating our honest opinion or be accused of trying to feel big or put out someones candle for doing so.Lastly, if bad\negative opinions are not allowed or 'discouraged' on a skin that has not been purchased yet, then why in the heck are postive ones allowed and\or without corresponding critique? The entire premise is flawed.
Doesn't make any sense to me and telling us all that it should be the rule of thumb.. again... IMO is just plain wrong.
I would like to think this discussion could be civil and debated sensibly.
Thanks.
Comments, reviews, critiques..whatever you want to call them, I believe are here to stay.
Even sites like Best Buy and Walmart have 'review' sections. My wife won't purchase anything without checking customer reviews. She'll read through them and make up her own mind.
There have been instances where the overall reviews were good and then along come two or five that bash the product, often contradicting specific comments to the letter. And even on these sites, you do not have to purchase the product to post a review.
I don't see Sony jumping in when a bad review comes down and saying it's 'unfair'. Perhaps because they are so big, I don't know.
When money is involved, people are going to voice their opinions. They are going to be more apt to voice their negative opinions when it comes to making a purchase, though I am still amazed that they will bash something they got for free, whatever it is. (Not necassarily skins)
I wonder if any Master could hold up to an in depth review of their skin. Something on the level of Engadget and the way they will deconstruct a cell phone and list it's pro's and cons. On that note, my suggestions would be that Masters and/or Journeymen (No Mods or Admin) fullfill part of their obligation to contribute more to the community and take turns doing in depth reviews of the Master skins. They could also feature a skin by someone who is not a Master but may well be on their way. The Master skin would have to be made available to the reviewer free of charge. (If SOny or Samsung can fork over a free phone for review, I think it could be done with a skin)
Perhaps have anyone who is willing to take on this task submit an audition review for the admins and mods to look over and decide who may be best suited for such a task. The review should reflect a persons ability to be knowledgable, objective, articulate (leaves me out) , and informative. The review would cover usability, craftsmanship, artistic presence, etc. Not much different than reviewing the work of an architect as you are looking at multiple points of interest and importance.
Great idea, Po!
I remember years ago, when i opened Maxstyles.com, I really had very little traffic, before SD was even selling skins, I decided to post on Neowin.net that a 'pay' theme was available on my site. I wish I had screenshotted the responses because I was absolutely freakin hammered.
I think, for two reasons, 1. because I was selling something that had up until then been given for free and 2. because there were people that who in other scenarios might have bought something online but were disgusted that I was asking money for what they deemed sub-standard quality work.
Now that pay skins have become more widely accepted many people will not complain when it comes to the fact that it is a pay skin as it has become more the norm than the exception, they will most definately complain if what is put up for sale does not meet what they may consider substandard.
Now I happen to quite like these icons, but, its quite obvious that some folks took great exception to them.

There are numerous similar posts in other Master skin threads, Stardock submitted and not.
good post indeed Po, I personally think thats a good idea.
posted blinds are open to comment. can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. While I find comments like "shitty icons" or "this blind sucks" annoying, I find the responses to these comments "you stupid SOB, you wouldn't know a good blind if it bit your mum on the butt" to be as offensive as the comments "wow, great looking blind" when it isn't.
(i.e. from the other post "Don't sweat the comments...they will typically come from the clueless, sad and disenfranchised.") I have made negative posts on submissions before and I can assure you that none of these labels reflect my state of mind or being. AND, I certainly hope that these off the cuff comments do not reflect WC's attitude towards those that $upport the product line and pay your $alaries.
however, I do think before a "master blind" is put up for sale that it needs to function on all of the operating systems that are supported by this site.
edit: I refreshed before I posted and missed page 3, good suggestion Po (Walmart?, po baby)
THis is the first time I have seen them and before I even read the comments I had the same thoughts as some of the commenters. Oxidized recolored.
This is the kind of stuff I mean when I say 'play it safe' only this would fall into more of a 'no effort' response. I don't think 'purple' when I think Dance Floor. I think multicolored, bright, striking...or even something more formal (as in ballroom) like crystal, white light, stars, and glossy wood. Where is the 'disco ball' or 'spotlight' icon? Where is the DJ turntable? WHere is the 'white polyester vest' or 'platform shoes'?
I think folks expect more from Stardock than recolored packages. Especially when it comes to one so instantly recognizable. When you consider the stable of artists that they have it's disturbing. If a Master recolored a one of their own blinds or iconpacks and posted it for sale I doubt it would get through moderation. I would hope not.
I suppose it's their right. If they can take the Wii and make a black one and charge a few more bucks by making it a limited release or whatever, I guess it's okay to recolor whatever you want and call it 'new'. You couldn't recolor the Oxidized pack as it is and have it look the same as the dance floor pack, so there is that. But people are going to notice and voice there opinions in the comments or by keeping their walltes closed.
*edit slighly off topic...a lot of this and stuff said here and in other threads has been slightly discouraging for me as far as my ever completeing a skin. I operate on one humble little PC with one OS. When one dies, I haven't had the emans to step up to a better PC or monitor, let alone purchasing or running multiple PCs or OS'. I like to think had I the time and resources I could accomplish a great deal but I don't see it happening any time soon or even later. My problem is I have all these ideas and graphics and stuff in my head. I would like to offer my limited abilitys to anyone who would like to take them and assemble them/partenr with me on them so I can see them come to pass. I'm not talking about selling them or anything like that, I just want to see them as a finished working skin. Selfish, I know, but sincere.
I think if u hit the Top Master skins gallery and go thru the litany of comments associated with them you may find quite a few negative comments by folks that obviously did not purchase the skin but felt free to leave that opinion anyway.
C'est la vie.
btw Po, my friend.. a few posts back... you formed and stated an opinion...from a screenshot.
I rest my case
well, there is no money back guarantee on these skins so the picture is all most of us would be able to comment on..
go back to Po's idea of skinner's reviews, I like that, I'll volunteer.
Sure.
But in the particular case of the Dance Floor Icons we are talking about an obviously recolored package, not their quality or usability. Not even the craftmanship. (though, IMO, the recoloring turned them into generic icons and did nothing to enhance them) For lack of a better word, I think the overall dissapointment was a general feeling that the icons were 'recycled'. Again, I think people expect more from Stardock. That, in itself, does not mean Stardock was wrong. IMO, I would rather see the Oxidized pack 'updated' with live folders and such.
It's like purchasing a DVD. How many editions of Blade Runner have been released? Some are altered (Directors Cut, DIrectors Final Cut, etc) but each offers something 'new' or offers 'more'. And people buy them. How many would run out and purchase it if they decided to release a 'black and white' version?
If we are referring to your SS from the linked forum thread...I did not get into the area of bugs or how it ran on my system, etc. I reviewed the screenshot. That is a far cry from 'This is not Master quality, so I will pass' which is generic and all encompassing without any definitive reasons given. IMO, that is not even an opinion but more of an episode of torrets.
So, to be clear, from a full screenshot, one designed to sell the artwork, you are claiming one is incapable of determining that the elements shown... Start menu, Taskbar, Taskbuttons, Frames, buttons, Titlebuttons, Loggoff buttons are or are not of what one may consider a Master quality graphics and\or design in their specific opinion??
Pardon my expression Po, but that my friend, is tripe.
Edit - Who are you and what have you done with Po ?
'Graphics' was not used in the particular comment I used, to be crystal clear. To be clearer...skinners...Accomplished Skinners, respected skinners, titled skinners, etc., should be more resonsible, thourough, descriptive, atc., and should download the skin as well, when commenting. IMO. The title or years of experience should not be an entiltlement to shortcuts, offhanded comments, or bashing.
I like you, Jon, but I don't like playing these games of having each little post totally deconstructed. Especially when you add things that were not there.
There are skins that appear one way in the screenshot and often the same way on the Windowblinds Menu and then when applied, something is off. iRobot is one example. The Screenshot is good. I love the skin. However, when in use, the start menu is totally borked on XP and on Vista. Gothic STate is another. Magic Pink shows up in the corner of open windows when applied. Another skin I love but won't use for that reason.
I never said it was.
I was merely pointing out that I'm sure that graphics was what was being referred to by any and all commenters as, indeed it is all that they were looking at and after all...
all a theme is.. is graphics...eh?
It sounds like your saying, ok, so it might have looked bad in the screenshot, better take a gamble, pay for it and hope it works out better in use.
As far as games, I'm not playing games and anyone is free to come and go as they please if its too hot in here.
It's not ALL that you look at, is it? And to say you know the minds of any and all commenters is lame.
You specifically called me out and said I was making a claim and laid out the claim you thought or wanted it to appear I was making and that is NOT what I was stating. You were wrong in the implication, inuendo, and in assuming I meant more than I stated.
It ain't too hot for me. The dissapointment may be deep, but I've been dissapointed before.
I think we should all go hunting. It is good every now and then to just go out and kill stuff.
my goodness, quit taking it so personal Po. I'm not out to get u either.
Yeah, most people look at graphics and design in a screenshot of a Graphical user interface.
Disappointment is a fact of life... for all of us.
I'm in.
How else should I take it.
If the word 'graphics' had been used in said comment, that would have been something. But it was not. An all encompassing comment was left. With nothing to explain it. That was that persons right. IMO, it was negligent (they did not critique the screenshot or download the skin), but still their right.
Never said you were or implied you were. I never said you were out to get anyone. Now who sounds paranoid? That is what I am talking about. Don't spin my shit. I try to say what I mean. There's no need to add to it or read into it.
Wow. dude, your really taking what I said all wrong. Gonna leave it alone now. turning into a who can scream louder, curse more and post last thread. Not at all what I hoped for.
No one is spinning anything. Moving on.
Dude...too hot?
What is so difficult about admitting you misrepresented what I said? You're original remark referred to 'me' and a claim I never made, your response to my issue with it changes it to 'everyone'. Unfortunatley, 'Everyone' isn't here to speak up. I am.
It is not a matter of who can scream the loudest. It is a matter of, you wouldn't let someone off the hook who twisted your comment around (A certain thread on a certain celebrity comes to mind) so what makes you think I should or would?
Can we still go hunting?
Cos I dont believe I did..
Lets try this again...
Are you saying... from a full screenshot, one designed to sell the artwork, that someone is incapable of determining that the elements shown... Start menu, Taskbar, Taskbuttons, Frames, buttons, Titlebuttons, Loggoff buttons are or are not of what one may consider a Master quality graphics and\or design in their specific opinion??
Unscientific, unofficial poll. Yes.. or No.
Anyone can answer this...it's open.
I don't own any guns, but my pencil packs a punch, can I still go?
My opinion...
A full, detailed SS is good enough. Otherwise, why do screenshots?
I have seen a couple (literally) of skins where the SS didn't do the skin justice. But most of the time, I can get a reeeal good idea of what the skin is like and of what quality it is just by the preview.
I've got a pretty mean BB rifle!
I post this comment due to my ignorance of how things can be done through a website and a pay site. I've seen many products that are offered on a limited time trial basis. How about Master skin downloads that time out after a couple of days. Prospective buyers could give the skins a test drive and make an informed decision prior to paying out. Just a thought.
No. That is not what I am saying. However, for example.....
Screenshot...
windowblinds config
applied
Sometimes the screenshot is inaccurate. It doesn't matter what skin or what OS...the SS can be inaccurate.
Here is Stardocks original SS of Oxidized
Here is a recent SS from the SS gallery...
For me, the second SS is more appealing and shows more of it's uniqueness. If I hadn't downloaded it and looked at it in more detail because of the first SS, I would have not fallen in love with it. WHo knows, I might have hated it after downloading. But I downloaded it.
