The release of Dragon Age: Origins this week was definitely huge. It seems people everywhere are talking about it. In the last couple of days I have seen quite a few reviews come out, and the consensus seems to be that it’s a winner.
Here are some links to reviews, and you can still pick up Dragon Age on Impulse.
As long as you are american...
After my review was there ever any doubt?
This game is pure awesomeness..it's a masterpiece...a must have for all RPG fans!
Aw man... this is awful. This might mean I actually have to buy this game. SIGH.
Yea!!!
The most surprising thing is, I've yet to encounter a negative opinion of the game. Any. At all. Not just gaming websites, but regular users as well, opinions pretty much range from "best RPG of this generation" to "best RPG ever made". Me, I bought it on Steam as Impulse is NA-only, and its preloading slooooooowly... no biggie, as its not released until a couple hours 'round here (it was apparently pushed forward a day, was gonna be tomorrow).
First game I pay full price for since Medieval II, and the first I've encountered such universal acclaim for since Half-Life 2. Let's hope it lives up to it.
Me :Yay
Parents: its rated Mature
Me:.......
When you look at it there isn't anything really "Mature" about it. There's no swearing, no actual nudity ,the closest it comes is a bikini type scene and one disgusting looking monster with 10 breasts has nipples. They aren't sexy looking nipples either as they are on a demon chick monster.
I think by "Mature" they mean all the blood and violence and the mature nature of the themes dealing with death, betrayal, and choices between right and wrong.
If I had a 14 year old son, I'd let him play DA:O. I'd say realistically the cut off age for being able to understand a game like this is around 12 or 13 depending on how smart your kid is. Then again, when I was 12 I was reading at a college comprehension level.
My friends all hate its guts. See they cut out the player item stash/party headquarters and made you pay for it in the form of DLC. To add insult to injury there is a quest NPC that has a link to purchase the DLC IN HIS DIALOG. And the top it all off once you talk to that guy you get a quest entry that stays in your journal that again tries to sell you the expansion content.
yeah. i love this one!
Me, I bought it on Steam as Impulse is NA-only
I would have done the same, except Steam wants €50. They're just too expensive to consider anymore after they changed from $ to € at 1:1 conversion ratio (or rather, the publishers are keeping that default). I bought a lot of games via Steam prior to this change, zero after. But I suppose the publishers have done their price elasticity calculations and my spending habits are in the minority.
Living in Belgium, I ordered it at Amazon UK at 32.32 £ or around 36 € (Including shipping). Which would have been more or less the same as if I bought it on Impulse and still a lot cheaper then buying it at a local store at around 47 €. I got a message this yesterday that it's on it's way, so either today or monday I should have it...
I'll wait till shortly before X-Mas before buying it. First off coz I won't have the time to play it till then anyway and secondly coz till then major probs that might arise, once more people are actually playing it, might be already solved.
Tamren, the DLC you complain about was made after the PC version was completed, what........3 months ago? They didn't "cut it out", it was developed beside and after the fact. Considering how many hours you get in the main game, that the DLC is multiple hours on its own, and that the DLC is what.....$7? How is this a big deal?
I hate microtransactions, and I'm not a fan of DLC. My kid gets pissed all the time because I won't let him buy items on XBL and various DLC for games he plays unless he can convince me it's worth it. Even considering that, I plan on buying it.
Beyond these silly complaints, the game is great. Several of my friends and I bought it, and all of us are loving it so far. Great story, fun gameplay, decent graphics, and I can see replaying it several times which is crazy considering how big this game is.
In that you obviously don't actually GET it. Over at the Dragon Age Board peeps are outraged by the fact that they can't dl the content they have paid for. Typically EA, if you ask me...
A pitty the camera is pretty horrible But the rest of the game is superb so far.
I've been playing 21 hours so far according to my "Acheivements", and it says I've completed 15% of the game and only explore 9% of the map . Add to that the almost unlimited reply value (you could replay, what, 6 times easy?) and it's a LOT of bang for the buck. I hear it's about 100 hours if you do every quest and explore every corner.
I give it an A- so far, and the "-" is just because the graphics are not "great", just kind'a good.
Read the official game forums, there are many "It's way too hard posts", but take it from me, those are all L2P people for sure. My team has died once, and used one healing potion in about the last 3 hours of play. Sadly, they just released a 1.1 patch that dumbs down the game because of the wine posts, which is crazy because I already turned up the level to Hard just so it was not too easy.
"Way to hard" That is why I'm playing this game. Maybe it is hard right now and I have to use 1000000000 health potions because my team is a bunch of warriors with a mage with no healing powers. I figure once I get a healer things may become a lot more easier. Guess I will wait and see, I keep killing everyone I see and pissing off my party members like no other with the exception of my dog. Maybe I'm making it too hard on myself, but it sure is fun killing elves!
On impulse the game is about 300 NOK (norwegian kroner), in the shops here its 400 NOK. Since impulse Dragon Age is North America only, i cannot get it on impulse. But I sure aint paying 33% extra for it either. I might buy it when I buy a new rig in the spring.
Or you could buy it on Steam and pay _even more_. It still boggles my mind that they think it should cost more to buy a game online than in a store.
The battle part of DA is as L2P as Demigod; remember all the "This demigod is OP and I always die" posts at first. This game is also, as one reveiw says, a Slooooow Burn; it's gets better and better as you play (and also as you learn to play).
BTW, there was also people posting 2-H weapon warriors are horrible; but NOT if you get a character that makes potions, and/or a healer, then they are killing machines.
Yeah my character is a two handed weapon character, and I drink potions like crazy, but can only make the light versions of them right now. I am just licking my chops when I get a healer. My 2-H weapon warrior does crazy damage though.
I like the difficulty.

===============WARNING: Minor Spoiler about Enemies=================
============================================================
So far my group has only died once and that was against a Revanant that I accidentally released in the Circle of Mages tower....oops. Also there's a Sloth Demon you fight later in the Fade that's pretty tough.
I'm loving it though. I always though Baldur's Gate could have used a higher difficulty level.
Tat, I don't think this is a "spoiler", but you can give Morrigan (is that her name?) healing eventially as she advances. Also, if you ever go to any place that has mage characters (like the Circle tower) you might chose to add a mage/healer to your group.
Once you get the Tactics AI programming down, you almost never need to pause durring casual battles. Challenging battles, well, I need to pause them most the time; babysitting is more like it, but that's one of the great parts of the game.
Many of the people posting "It's too hard" seem to be from the FPS type games, also, they want to level up as fast as humanly possible (why, in a game like DA, I have no idea), and just rush into mobs swinging and slinging spells, so planning and pausing and strategy are almost "deterents" to their fun. Also, this game has friendly fire, which I'm seeing more and more is another reason people are dying; they are quite literally killing themselves.
